Abstract
The survival of an organism relies on its ability to repair the damage caused by trauma, toxic agents, and inflammation. This process involving cell proliferation and differentiation is driven by several growth factors and is critically dependent on the organization of the extracellular matrix. Since autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) are fibrin matrices in which cells, growth factors, and cytokines are trapped and delivered over time, they are able to influence that response at different levels. The present review thoroughly describes the molecular components present in one of these APCs, leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF), and summarizes the level of evidence regarding the influence of L-PRF on anti-inflammatory reactions, analgesia, hemostasis, antimicrobial capacity, and its biological mechanisms on bone/soft tissue regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To overview the literature to answer the following question: "What is the performance of different therapies on wound healing and postoperative discomfort after palatal ASTG removal?" METHODS SRs that evaluated the wound healing (WH), postoperative pain, bleeding, and analgesic consumption of patients submitted to de-epithelialized/free gingival grafts (FGG) or subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTG) removed from the palate were included. The searches were conducted on six white and two gray databases up to December 2023. Methodological quality was evaluated through AMSTAR 2. The synthesis of results was described as a narrative analysis. RESULTS Ten SRs (involving 25 randomized clinical trials) related to low-level laser therapy (LLLT) (3), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) (4), cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives (CTA) (2), and ozone therapy (OT) (1) were included in this overview. All techniques demonstrated improvements in WH. LLT, PRF, and CTA reduced pain and analgesic consumption. PRF and CTA reduced bleeding. Regarding methodological quality, the SRs were classified as critically low (2), low (5), moderate (2), or high quality (1). CONCLUSIONS In SRs related to LLLT, PRF, CTA, and OT, the use of different therapies after palatal ASTG removal improved WH and postoperative discomfort. Due to the studies' low methodological quality and high heterogeneity, data should be interpreted with caution. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present overview compiles the evidence of SRs related to different therapies for WH and patients' postoperative experience and reveals that different treatments can significantly improve the clinical outcomes of patients who require ASTG removal for periodontal or peri-implant surgeries. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this research was to assess both clinically and histologically the effect of a topically applied melatonin-loaded gelatin sponge on palatal wound healing after graft harvesting. METHODS Twenty-six patients for whom free palatal graft procurement was indicated were divided equally into 2 groups. In the test group, the donor site was covered by a melatonin-loaded gelatin sponge, and in the control group the site was covered by a placebo-loaded gelatin sponge. Wound healing was evaluated on the day of surgery and at 7 and 14 days postsurgery using photo-digital planimetry. Histologic specimens were taken to verify healing type and rate. Pain was assessed via Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for 7 days from the day of the surgery. RESULTS At the 7-day interval, photo-digital planimetry showed a significant decrease in the traced raw area (P = .04) in the test group compared with the control group and a significant increase in the mean area of immature epithelia (P = .04). At the 14-day interval, there was no statistically significant difference in any area of interest. Histologically, the application of melatonin was associated with accelerated healing and superior maturation at all follow-up time points. No significant differences were noted in VAS scores between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS Melatonin-treated tissue showed marked clinical improvement in the first week postsurgery, indicating an increased rate of healing. Similarly, histologic analysis revealed significant maturation at both time intervals. A melatonin-loaded gelatin sponge is a novel palatal wound dressing that can be used to improve wound healing outcomes and reduce patient morbidity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) contains a variety of growth factors and bioactive molecules that play crucial roles in wound healing and angiogenesis. We aimed to evaluate the effects of PRF on tissue thickness and vascularization of the palatal donor site by ultrasound (USG) following subepithelial connective tissue harvesting. METHODOLOGY A subepithelial connective tissue graft was harvested from the palatal region with a single incision for root coverage in 20 systemically healthy patients. In the test group (n = 10), the PRF membrane was placed at the donor site, whereas no material was applied in the control group (n=10). Palatal tissue thickness (PTT) and pulsatility index (PI) were evaluated by USG at baseline and on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 30th, and 90th days after surgery. The early healing index (EHI) was used to evaluate donor site healing for 30 days. RESULTS PTT was significantly higher in the PRF group on the 3rd and 14th days after surgery when compared to the controls. In the PRF-treated group, PI levels were significantly higher than in the controls, especially on the 14th day. PTT increased significantly 90 days after surgery compared to the test group baseline, but controls showed a significant decrease. The PRF group showed statistically significant improvements in EHI scores compared to controls on days 3, 7, and 14. This study found a negative correlation between PI values and EHI scores on postoperative days three and seven in the test group. CONCLUSION USG is a non-invasive, objective method to radiographically evaluate the regenerative effects of PRF on palatal wound healing after soft tissue harvesting. To overcome graft inadequacy in reharvesting procedures, PRF application may enhance clinical success and reduce possible complications by increasing tissue thickness and revascularization in the donor area.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a chitosan-based dressing (CD) in achieving early wound healing and hemostasis at palatal donor sites in patients undergoing free gingival graft (FGG) surgery. METHODS Thirty-two patients requiring FGG were treated in this randomized controlled clinical trial. Complete epithelialization (CE) and color match (CM) at donor sites were assessed by a blinded examiner on postoperative days 7, 14, 21, and 28. Donor sites were compressed for 2 min with wet gauze (WG) alone in control group (CG) or WG + CD in test group (TG) immediately after graft harvesting, and immediate bleeding (IB) was recorded (yes/no). Delayed bleeding (DB) (for 1 week), and number of analgesic tablets consumed, and VAS scores for pain (for 2 weeks) were recorded by patient every day. RESULTS Twenty-eight patients (14 in each group) were included in final analysis. The prevalence of CE (at weeks 2 and 3) and VAS scores for CM scores were higher in TG but the intergroup differences were statistically significant only for CM (at week 4). Number of patients exhibiting IB and DB was significantly fewer in the TG (p < .05). Although average pain scores and analgesic consumption were higher in TG up to 5 days, differences between two groups were not statistically significant at any time point. CONCLUSION Our data suggests that the application of CD increased re-epithelialization and accelerated wound healing process, although it did not reach statistical significance. Moreover, CD was found to significantly reduce bleeding complications, but it did not decrease the pain levels.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the clinical effects of different blood derivatives on wound healing using network meta-analysis. PubMed, Embase, OVID, Web of Science, SCOPUS and Cochrane Central were searched to obtain studies about blood derivatives on wound healing until October 2023. R 4.2.0 and Stata 15.0 softwares were used for data analysis. Forty-four studies comprising 5164 patients were included. The results of network meta-analysis showed that the healing area from high to low was GF + ORCCB, ORCCB, GF, PRF, Unnas paste dressing, APG, PRP injection, PRP, PRP + thrombin gel, PPP, HPL, CT. The healing time from low to high was PRP + thrombin gel, GF, PRP, PC + K, PC, APG, PRF, CT, Silver sulfadiazine ointment. The number of patients cured from high to low was APG, PRP injection, PRP, Aurix, PRF, Leucopatch, HPL, Antimicrobial Ointment Dressing, CT, 60 μg/cm2 repifermin, 120 μg/cm2 repifermin, AFG, PPP. The order of analgesic effect from high to low was AFG, Aminogam gel, PRF, PRP, Oxidised oil, APG, GF, CT. The order of the number of wound infection cases from low to high is APG, 20 μg/cm2 repifermin, 60 μg/cm2 repifermin, PRP, LeucoPatch, CT, PPP, Antiseptic ointment dressing. Healing area: GF + ORCCB had the best effect; Healing time: PRP + thrombin gel took the shortest time. The number of cured patients and the reduction of wound infection: APG has the best effect. Analgesic effect: AFG has the best effect. More studies with large sample sizes are needed to confirm the above findings.

Abstract
This experimental study aimed to evaluate the effects of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) on mucosal healing and the release of growth factors in rats. 40 rats were used; i-PRF was administered in the right buccal area while saline was injected in the left. Cytokeratin, FGF, PDGF, TGF, and VEGF expressions were determined with immunohistochemistry. Gene expressions of EGF, TGF-β, and VEGF were analysed. Epithelialization started on the 3rd day, and connective tissue maturation was more prominent in the i-PRF-applied group. Also, the releases of VEGF, EGF, TGF-β, PDGF, and FGF were higher in the i-PRF group during the 14 days. Gene expression analysis showed that changes in TGF-β at 14 days after i-PRF injection and VEGF after 21 days were statistically significant. The results of this study suggested that autologous i-PRF application enhanced the healing of oral mucosal wounds by increasing the release of growth factors for 21 days.

Abstract
The use of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has seen widespread advantages over platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in many fields of medicine. However, until 2014, PRF remained clinically available only in its solid clotted form. Modifications to centrifugation protocols and tube technology have led to the development of a liquid injectable version of PRF (i-PRF). This narrative review takes a look back at the technological developments made throughout the past decade and further elaborates on their future clinical applications. Topics covered include improvements in isolation techniques and protocols, ways to further concentrate i-PRF, and the clinical impact and relevance of cooling i-PRF. Next, various uses of i-PRF are discussed, including its use in regenerative periodontology, implantology, endodontics, temporomandibular joint injections, and orthodontic tooth movement. Furthermore, various indications in medicine are also covered, including its use in sports injuries and osteoarthritis of various joints, treatment of diabetic ulcers/wound care, and facial esthetics and hair regrowth. Finally, future applications are discussed, mainly its use as a drug delivery vehicle for small biomolecules, such as growth factors, antibiotics, exosomes, and other medications that may benefit from the controlled and gradual release of biomolecules over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of wound healing using injectable platelet-rich fibrin (IPRF) after gingivectomy and gingivoplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this clinical study, 46 systemically healthy patients with chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement were randomly treated with gingivectomy-gingivoplasty + I-PRF (n=23) or gingivectomy-gingivoplasty alone (n=23). The primary outcome was to evaluate the effect of I-PRF on wound healing over a 3-week follow-up period. Samples collected from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) were processed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELİSA) to measure VEGF and FGF-10 biomarkers. The surgical areas were stained with Mira-2 tone and evaluated in ImageJ. Wound healing was evaluated with Modified Manchester Scar (MMS) scale and Landry, Turnbull, and Howley (LTH) index. RESULTS VEGF values of the control group at baseline, week 2, and week 3 were significantly higher than the test group. In weeks 2 and 3, FGF-10 values were found to be significantly higher in the control group than the test group. The amount of staining was found to be significantly higher in the control group than in the test group on days 3, 7, and 14. LTH values of the control group were significantly lower than the test group and MMS values were significantly higher than those of the test group. CONCLUSIONS I-PRF applications revealed positive effects on epithelial wound healing after gingivectomy and gingivoplasty operations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Platelet concentrates such as I-PRF accelerate wound healing and contribute to the patient's comfort and quality of life. I-PRF application may have positive effects on wound healing after gingivectomy and gingivoplasty operations.

Abstract
Oral carcinoma, a prevalent malignancy of the oral cavity, often results in surgical site wounds post-resection. The therapeutic efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in wound healing and scar formation has garnered significant attention. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the role of PRF in promoting surgical site wound healing and reducing scar formation following oral carcinoma resection. A systematic search, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, was conducted across multiple databases. The primary outcomes assessed were the Landry, Turnbull and Howley (LTH) wound healing index and the Manchester scar scale (MSS). Statistical evaluations were performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Six studies were incorporated, involving 93 patients treated with PRF and 97 in the control group. For the LTH index, significant improvements in wound healing were observed in the PRF group with I2 = 74%, (Random: SMD: 3.70, 95% CIs: 2.66 to 4.75, p < 0.01). The Manchester scar scale assessment, which included 60 PRF-treated patients and 60 controls, indicated a significant reduction in scar formation in the PRF group I2 = 79%, (Random: SMD: 9.13, 95% CIs: 6.06 to 12.20, p < 0.01). PRF demonstrates promising therapeutic potential in enhancing surgical site wound healing and reducing scar formation post oral carcinoma resection. The application of PRF has been associated with improved wound healing metrics and diminished scar severity. However, further high-quality studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review aimed to systematically identify evidence-based interventions to stimulate healing or protect the harvested palate of patients undergoing gingival grafting. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study followed guidelines from the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR (protocol available at osf.io/zhafn). PubMed, Embase, and seven other databases were searched on November 2022, with additional monitoring until April 2023. The inclusion criteria focused on studies evaluating outcomes related to the donor area (palate) and interventions for healing or protecting it, regardless of publication year and language. Data from the included publications was extracted and presented through narrative text, tables, and figures. RESULTS Eighty-one studies (including 64 clinical trials, four case series, five theses, and eight systematic reviews) and 37 clinical trial records were included. The number of studies on this topic has significantly increased, reflecting a growing interest in the field. Thirty-six interventions with published results and 12 interventions with unpublished results from clinical trial registers were identified. Some promising interventions that showed potential for improving patient-reported outcomes include cyanoacrylate adhesive, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), and the combination of palatal stents and healing agents. CONCLUSIONS Thirty-six interventions with published results were identified for postoperative use on the harvested palate, showing varying levels of evidence and conflicting effectiveness for specific outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Postoperative discomfort and pain in the palate are commonly experienced by patients undergoing grafting procedures using this region as the donor area. Awareness of the available options and their levels of evidence is crucial for informed decision-making.

Abstract
To construct an injectable fibrin glue system loaded with kaempferol (FG@F) to improve the bioavailability of kaempferol and observe its efficacy in the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). Kaempferol-loaded fibrin glue was first synthesized in advance. Subsequently, the materials were characterized by various experimental methods. Then, nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to establish a degenerative cell model, and the corresponding intervention treatment was conducted to observe the effect in vitro. Finally, the tail disc of rats was punctured to establish a model of IVDD, and the therapeutic effect of the material in vivo was observed after intervertebral disc injection. The FG@F system has good injectability, sustained release and biocompatibility. This treatment reduced the inflammatory response associated with IVDD and regulated matrix synthesis and degradation. Animal experimental results showed that the FG@F system can effectively improve needle puncture-induced IVDD in rats. The FG@F system has better efficacy than kaempferol or FG alone due to its slow release and mechanical properties. The drug delivery and biotherapy platform based on this functional system might also serve as an alternative therapy for IVDD.

Abstract
The literature describes multiple ways to stimulate wound healing to reduce the patient's perception of pain. This systematic review aimed to evaluate if methods that enhance wound healing can reduce the patient's perception of pain after free gingival graft removal from the palate region compared to natural healing. A systematic review protocol was written following the PRISMA checklist. Electronic searches of five databases were performed to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that assessed the patient's perception of pain after the removal of a free gingival graft from the palate. The primary outcome was the visual analog scale (VAS) score assessing the patient's perception of pain 7 days after the free gingival graft removal from the palate region. Of the 1,622 potentially relevant articles retrieved from the electronic databases, 16 RCTs were selected for qualitative analysis, and of these, 6 RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. RCTs showed a significant VAS reduction associated with the use of methods to enhance wound healing. The pooled estimates revealed a significant overall VAS reduction of 2.20 (95% CI 2.32, 2.07) 7 days after surgery. The methods that presented the greatest reduction in the perception of pain were platelet-rich fibrin, hyaluronic acid, and autologous fibrin glue. Methods that enhance wound healing, including platelet-rich fibrin, hyaluronic acid, and autologous fibrin glue, can reduce pain perception after free gingival graft removal in the palate region. However, only 1 RCT investigated each approach, which hinders the conclusion regarding the best procedure to reduce the perception of pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Free gingival graft (FGG) has been successfully used in the treatment of gingival recessions, as it is the most predictable technique for increasing the attached gingiva. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of liquid platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) with FGG on root surface coverage as root surface biomodification. MATERIALS AND METHODS The research sample consisted of 32 surgical sites in 16 patients, they had 2 bilateral recessions in the incisor area of the same dental arch, the sample was divided into 2 groups randomly, and liquid PRF was applied in the first group with the FGG (experimental group), and in the second group the FGG was applied alone (control group). Gingival recession depth (RD) and width of attached gingiva (WAG) were measured before starting, after 1, 3, and 6 months. The percentage of root coverage (RC) was calculated after 6 months. Healing Index (HI) was recorded after 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1 month. RESULTS Both groups showed a reduction in gingival RD during all follow-up periods but the difference between both groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05) at 1 and 3 months, whereas there were significant differences at 6 months (p = 0.001). RC was better in the liquid PRF group than in the control group, but this difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The postoperative 7th and 14th days HI scores of the liquid PRF group were significantly better than the control group (p = 0.000 and p = 0.004, respectively), whereas there were no significant differences in HI scores between both groups at first month (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS According to the results, the addition of liquid PRF to the root surface with FGG showed further development in terms of decreasing RD, increasing WAG, and accelerated wound-healing.

Abstract
PURPOSE To construct an injectable, sustained-release fibrin gel containing rhein to solve the problem of low bioavailability of rhein, and observe its efficacy in the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration. METHODS The fibrin gel containing rhein was first synthesized in advance. Subsequently, the materials were characterized by various experimental methods. Secondly, the degenerative cell model was constructed by stimulating nucleus pulposus cells with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and the corresponding intervention treatment was carried out to observe the effect in vitro. Finally, the rat tail intervertebral disc was acupunctured by needles to establish the intervertebral disc degeneration model, and the effect of the material was observed through intradiscal injection. RESULTS The fibrin glue containing rhein (rhein@FG) showed good injectability, sustained release and biocompatibility. Rhein@FG can improve the LPS-induced inflammatory microenvironment, regulate ECM metabolic disorders of nucleus pulposus cells and aggregation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in vitro, and inhibit cell pyroptosis. Furthermore, in vivo experiments, rhein@FG effectively prevented needle puncture-induced intervertebral disc degeneration in rats. CONCLUSIONS Rhein@FG has better efficacy than rhein or FG alone due to its slow release and mechanical properties, which can be used as a potential replacement therapy for intervertebral disc degeneration.

Abstract
Palatal-tissue harvesting is a routinely performed procedure in periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. Over the years, several surgical approaches have been attempted with the aim of obtaining autogenous soft-tissue grafts while minimizing patient morbidity, which is considered the most common drawback of palatal harvesting. At the same time, treatment errors during the procedure may increase not only postoperative discomfort or pain but also the risk of developing other complications, such as injury to the greater palatine artery, prolonged bleeding, wound/flap sloughing, necrosis, infection, and inadequate graft size or quality. This chapter described treatment errors and complications of palatal harvesting techniques, together with approaches for reducing patient morbidity and accelerating donor site wound healing. The role of biologic agents, photobiomodulation therapy, local and systemic factors, and genes implicated in palatal wound healing are also discussed.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to evaluate the effect of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) as a potential catalyst for the acceleration of palatal wound healing after subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) harvesting. MATERIALS AND METHODS Referred patients to the Department of Periodontology with the complication of the gingival recession were examined. Thirty participants were chosen for root coverage surgeries with SCTGs, and randomly distributed into two groups; the study group (n = 15) with i-PRF was applied, and the control group (n = 15) without i-PRF. The wound healing index was evaluated on the 7th, 14th, and 30th days of the treatment. Palatal tissue thickness was measured before the treatment and at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd months after the treatment. RESULTS The study group improved significantly the early healing over the control group on days 7 and 14 (p < 0.01), whereas no difference in the first month (p > 0.05) between the groups. Moreover, the study group showed higher tissue thickness mean in the first and second month (p < 0.01), but in the third month, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between both groups. CONCLUSION The i-PRF has favorable effects on the healing process by enhancing wound healing and increasing the tissue thickness in the palate after SCTG harvesting. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE For clinicians, it is important to know that we can use biological materials to accelerate healing in general, such as i-PRF. In this study, we used it in the palate, which may accelerate the healing so that we can repeatedly use the same area of the patient's palate for more than one occasion faster.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare the effects of four different commonly used wound dressings in improving patient reported outcomes (PROMS) after free epithelialized mucosal grafts (FEGs) harvesting. METHODS Following 72 FEGs harvesting from 72 patients, patients were assigned into four groups. CONTROL collagen plug + sutures (CPS); test: collagen plug with cyano-acrylate (CPC), platelet rich fibrin (PRF) + sutures, or palatal stent only (PS). Patients were observed for 14 days, with evaluation of pain level utilizing the visual analog scale, number of analgesics consumed, need for additional analgesics, amount of swelling, amount of bleeding, activity tolerance, and willingness for retreatment. RESULTS Compared to the control group all test groups indicated significant lower pain perception (P < 0.0001), lower analgesic consumption (P < 0.0001), and higher willingness for retreatment (P < 0.0001), while no statistically significant differences among test groups were observed. There were no statistically significant differences in amount of day-by-day swelling, bleeding, and activity tolerance among four groups. Compared to other groups, the PS had the lowest overall pain scores (over the 14-day period). Palatal thickness, graft length, graft width, and graft thickness did not appear to affect patient morbidity (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS All interventions significantly decreased pain perception compared to a hemostatic collagen sponge alone over the palatal donor site after FEG surgery. In the first few days after surgery, the use of a palatal stent seemed to be associated with less overall pain, pain pills consumed, and higher willingness of doing the same procedure again.

Abstract
Background Ongoing research in the dental field has begun to focus on the use of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) as a regenerative tool with the potential to prompt tissue regeneration. In this regard, this systematic scoping review aimed to collect, map, and appraise the in vitro and in vivo studies regarding the role of I-PRF in or soft and hard tissue regeneration in relation to oral and maxillofacial structures. Methods A systematic electronic search of Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases was performed from 2000 to December 2021 using a combination of keywords. All in vitro and in vivo studies, written in English and concerning the potential role of I-PRF in regenerative dentistry were considered. Results In total, 18 in vitro studies, 5 animal studies, 6 case reports, and 31 clinical studies have evaluated the effect of I-PRF on oral and maxillofacial soft and hard tissue regeneration. The investigated studies verified the anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial efficacy and the positive effects of I-PRF application for wound, periodontal, bone, cartilage, and pulp regeneration, as well as acceleration in tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. Conclusions Current literature approves the feasibility of I-PRF application as a promising regenerative adjunct to dental procedures.

Abstract
Background The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effectiveness of fibrin sealant compared to sutures in periodontal surgery. Methods Five electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, Cochrane and Web of Science) were screened from initiation to January 2021 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing fibrin sealant to sutures in periodontal surgery using this search equation: (Periodont* OR Periodontitis) AND ("fibrin tissue adhesive" OR "fibrin glue" OR "fibrin sealant" OR "fibrin sealant system" OR "fibrin adhesive system" OR "fibrin fibronectin sealant system"). Quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the revised tool to assess risk of bias in randomized trials (RoB 2). The level of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE tool. Results A total of 240 publications were found as search results in the screened databases. Four RCTs were included in this systematic review based on predetermined inclusion criteria. The trials were published between 1987 and 2014. All the RCTs compared fibrin sealant to sutures in periodontal surgery. The sample size included 101 patients. The overall risk of bias in this systematic review was at high risk in 75% of the studies, while 25% of the studies raised some concerns. The level of evidence evaluated using GRADE tool was very low. Discussion The current systematic review indicates a low level of evidence of the use of fibrin sealant as an alternative to sutures in periodontal practice. More interventional and multicentric studies should be conducted to support and confirm the results of the included studies.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex process in tissue regeneration through which the body responds to the dissipated cells as a result of any kind of severe injury. Diabetic and non-healing wounds are considered an unmet clinical need. Currently, different strategic approaches are widely used in the treatment of acute and chronic wounds which include, but are not limited to, tissue transplantation, cell therapy and wound dressings, and the use of an instrument. A large number of literatures have been published on this topic; however, the most effective clinical treatment remains a challenge. The wound dressing involves the use of a scaffold, usually using biomaterials for the delivery of medication, autologous stem cells, or growth factors from the blood. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs are also used to stop the infection as well as accelerate wound healing. With an increase in the ageing population leading to diabetes and associated cutaneous wounds, there is a great need to improve the current treatment strategies. This research critically reviews the current advancement in the therapeutic and clinical approaches for wound healing and tissue regeneration. The results of recent clinical trials suggest that the use of modern dressings and skin substitutes is the easiest, most accessible, and most cost-effective way to treat chronic wounds with advances in materials science such as graphene as 3D scaffold and biomolecules hold significant promise. The annual market value for successful wound treatment exceeds over $50 billion US dollars, and this will encourage industries as well as academics to investigate the application of emerging smart materials for modern dressings and skin substitutes for wound therapy.

Abstract
Among all the biomaterials introduced in the field of bone tissue engineering, injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) has recently gained considerable attention. I-PRF, as a rich source of biologically active molecules, is a potential candidate which can be easily obtained in bedside and constitutes several biological factors which can result in higher anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerative capabilities. According to the studies evaluating the osteogenic efficacy of I-PRF, this biomaterial has exhibited favorable outcomes in terms of adhesion, differentiation, migration, proliferation and mineralization potential of stem cells. In addition, the injectability and ease-of-applicability of this biomaterial has led to its various clinical applications in the oral and maxillofacial bone regeneration such as ridge augmentation, sinus floor elevation, cleft palate reconstruction and so on. Furthermore, to enhance the clinical performance of I-PRF, albumin gel-PRF as a long-lasting material for long-term utilization has been recently introduced with a gradual increase in growth factor release pattern. This review provides a comprehensive approach to better evaluate the applicability of I-PRF by separately appraising its performance in in-vitro, in-vivo and clinical situations. The critical approach of this review toward the different production protocols and different physical and biological aspects of I-PRF can pave the way for future studies to better assess the efficacy of I-PRF in bone regeneration.

Abstract
Liquid or injectable platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a second-generation platelet concentrate which is completely autologous and free of external additives like bovine thrombin and calcium chloride. Additionally, it is the only one to be obtained in a liquid form among the second generation platelet concentrates. This allows for wide applications such as to maximize injections or mixing with biomaterials such as bone grafts or antibiotics. Since it was first introduced in 2015, several modifications of the original protocol have been proposed which aim at maximizing its biological and mechanical properties. This includes changes in centrifugation speed, time, and so on. The aim of this review is to summarize the various modifications of the injectable/liquid formation of PRF as well as to discuss the potential applications and future research direction.

Is the use of platelet-rich fibrin effective in the healing, control of pain, and postoperative bleeding in the palatal area after free gingival graft harvesting? Abstract
OBJECTIVE A systematic review (SR) was conducted to answer the following focused question based on PICO strategy: In patients who were submitted to harvesting palatal free gingival graft, could platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) application in comparison with another method improve the healing, pain, and control of postoperative bleeding in the palatal area in randomized clinical trials? METHODS A SR was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. The MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched, and hand searches were made, covering the period up to August 2020, for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) reporting the effect of PRF membrane in postoperative palatal healing management compared with any other methods. The risk of bias (RoB) of the studies included was assessed by using the RoB 2 tool. RESULTS The electronic search strategy identified 150 articles. After title screening and abstract reading, 141 studies were excluded, and 9 full-text publications were comprehensively evaluated. Finally, 8 articles were included in the systematic review. Six studies showed that the PRF membrane was effective in improving wound healing during the first 2 weeks. As regards patient-centered outcomes, five studies showed that PRF promoted less postoperative pain. Finally, five studies that evaluated bleeding showed that the PRF membrane improved control of postoperative bleeding. RoB was classified as low in 4 studies, 3 with some concerns, and only one study did not describe the outcome data, and as this was missing, it was not possible to verify the protocol of data analysis for this study; therefore, it was classified as having high RoB. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, the collective evidence emerging from this SR may support the use of PRF membrane in the palatal area after free gingival graft harvesting. The results of this review must be interpreted with caution, due to the low number of RCTs included and high degree of heterogeneity among the PRF protocols. Further well-designed RCTs with accurate protocol and standard PRF parameters are required in order to gain clear understanding of the influence of PRF on wound healing and patient-centered outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of PRF membrane for the protection of the palatal donor site following free gingival graft harvesting procedures improves wound healing and patients' quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Electrical stimulation (ES) has been used to treat chronic wound and other clinical applications, showing favorable results in wound closure. It was hypothesized that ES can present a positive effect on oral mucosa healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ES during the palatal mucosa early healing process in Swiss mice. METHODS Ninety animals were divided into two groups: Control (C; n = 45), which received Sham ES applications, and Test (ES; n = 45), which received ES (100 μA; 9 kHz; 660 mVpp) once a day for 3 days. A full thickness wound was performed with a 1.5 mm diameter biopsy punch in the hard palate. Histologically, the following parameters were evaluated: palatal wound closure and epithelial and connective wound edge distance (EED and CED). Furthermore, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 TNF-α, and VEGF cytokine levels were evaluated by multiplex assay. The percentage of collagen fibers was assessed using the polarization method and the Smad proteins using the immunofluorescence method. RESULTS Palatal wound closure presented a significant reduction on day 5 in the ES group (p = 0.01). Additionally, both EED and CED were shorter for all time points in the ES group (p < 0.05), and the inflammatory markers IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and VEGF were reduced (p < 0.05). There were no differences in collagen fibers and phospho-Smad2 between the groups. CONCLUSION ES had a positive effect on early palatal wound closure outcomes, as well as on inflammatory markers.
