Abstract
Limited research has explored the specific impact of voice-hearing experiences upon the social relating of adolescents. This study examined the associations of voice-hearing in youth with social relating, and putative explanatory factors. An observational, cross-sectional design using a clinical comparison group was employed to examine historical and concurrent associations with voice-hearing. Thirty-four young people (age 14-18 years) with voice-hearing experiences and 34 young people who did not hear voices were recruited from NHS mental health services. Participants completed measures about social relating and potential explanatory factors. Analyses of covariance were used to examine between-group differences. Voice-hearers scored higher on negative schematic beliefs (self-beliefs, partial η2 = .163, p = .001; other-beliefs, partial η2 = .152, p =. 002) and depressive and anxiety symptoms (partial η2 = .23 and partial η2 = .24, p-s <. 001 respectively). The two groups did not differ significantly on childhood trauma levels (partial η2 = .02, p = .273), however, the voice-hearing group scored lower on premorbid adjustment (partial η2 = .19, p < .001). Hearing voices in help-seeking youth could be an indicator for social relating issues and holding negative schematic beliefs, and may be an indicator for of increased psychopathological complexity. Although poorer premorbid adjustment might indicate an early vulnerability to social relating difficulties, voice-hearing might be an aggravating factor and one that requires treatment.

Abstract
Suicide risk and auditory hallucinations are common in schizophrenia, but less is known about its associations. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether the presence and severity of auditory hallucinations were associated with current suicidal ideation or behavior (CSIB) among patients with schizophrenia. We interviewed 299 individuals with schizophrenia and acute symptoms and reviewed their medical records. Measurement included the Psychotic Symptom Rating Scale (PSYRATS-AH), the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Logistic regression and path analysis were used. The CSIB prevalence was higher among patients with current auditory hallucination than those without (19.5% vs. 8.6%, crude odds ratio = 2.58, p = .009). Lifetime auditory hallucination experience (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 3.81; 95% CI: 1.45-10.05) or current auditory hallucination experience (AOR = 3.22; 95% CI: 1.25-8.28) can elevate the likelihood of CSIB while controlling for depressive symptoms and lifetime suicide-attempt history. Among those with auditory hallucinations, the emotional score of the PSYRATS-AH was positively associated with the CDSS score and there was a small indirect effect of the CDSS score on the association between the emotional domain score and CSIB (bias-corrected 95% CI, 0.02-0.20). In conclusion, the presence of auditory hallucinations was strongly associated with CSIB, independent of depressive symptoms and lifetime suicide attempts. Suicide risk assessment should consider auditory hallucination experience and patients' appraisal of its emotional characteristics. Future cohort studies are necessary to provide more conclusive evidence for the mediating pathways between auditory hallucinations and CSIB.HIGHLIGHTSThe presence of auditory hallucinations was associated with current suicidality.Auditory hallucinations' emotional severity was related to depressive symptoms.The severity of auditory hallucination was not directly associated with suicidality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Contemporary models of psychosis implicate the importance of affective dysregulation and cognitive factors (e.g. biases and schemas) in the development and maintenance of psychotic symptoms, but studies testing proposed mechanisms remain limited. This study, uniquely using a prospective design, investigated whether the jumping to conclusions (JTC) reasoning bias contributes to psychosis progression and persistence. METHODS Data were derived from the second Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS-2). The Composite International Diagnostic Interview and an add-on instrument were used to assess affective dysregulation (i.e. depression, anxiety and mania) and psychotic experiences (PEs), respectively. The beads task was used to assess JTC bias. Time series analyses were conducted using data from T1 and T2 (N = 8666), excluding individuals who reported high psychosis levels at T0. RESULTS Although the prospective design resulted in low statistical power, the findings suggest that, compared to those without symptoms, individuals with lifetime affective dysregulation were more likely to progress from low/moderate psychosis levels (state of 'aberrant salience', one or two PEs) at T1 to high psychosis levels ('frank psychosis', three or more PEs or psychosis-related help-seeking behaviour) at T2 if the JTC bias was present [adj. relative risk ratio (RRR): 3.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.8-18.6, p = 0.101]. Similarly, the JTC bias contributed to the persistence of high psychosis levels (adj. RRR: 12.7, 95% CI 0.7-239.6, p = 0.091). CONCLUSIONS We found some evidence that the JTC bias may contribute to psychosis progression and persistence in individuals with affective dysregulation. However, well-powered prospective studies are needed to replicate these findings.

Abstract
Psychological treatments for hallucinations typically target auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) but neglect the influence of hallucinations in other sensory modalities. This study compared the baseline clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes (following brief Coping Strategy Enhancement) of adult clients (N = 100) with multimodal or unimodal (auditory) hallucinations attending an outpatient service for distressing AVH. The results showed that 72.1% of clients reported multimodal hallucinations in the past month. Group comparisons of most baseline clinical characteristics (AVH features, beliefs about AVH, number of traumatic events, personal and social functioning, negative affect) were non-significant. However, in the subgroup (N = 65) reporting ongoing effects of traumatic events, those with multimodal hallucinations reported significantly higher posttraumatic stress symptoms (d = 0.62). Notably, both multimodal and unimodal hallucination groups showed improvement in AVH distress and frequency post-treatment, but group differences in treatment outcomes were not significant. These findings, in a naturalistic service setting, confirm that multimodal hallucinations are common in people seeking help for distressing AVH and may be associated with higher levels of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Importantly, they also suggest that psychological therapy may be suitable and effective for clients experiencing AVH - irrespective of the presence of hallucinations in other sensory modalities.

Abstract
Despite the prevalence of voice hearing in childhood and adolescence, little qualitative research has been undertaken with young people directly to advance phenomenological and aetiological insights into their experiences and interpretations. Consequently, the researchers sought demographic, contextual, and qualitative data from 74 young people from eleven countries, aged 13-18 years (28% = male; 61% = female; 21% = Transgender and Gender Non-Binary [TGNB]), who self-identified as hearing voices. A Foucauldian-informed narrative analysis yielded four analytic chapters, offering novel perspectives into individual, relational, systemic, and cultural interpretative narratives surrounding multisensory and multi-self voice hearing. Overall, young people reported heterogenous experiences of voice hearing and associated sensory experiences, and most participants reported voice hearing beginning between ages 8 and 11. Further, the emotions felt by the child, as well as reactions displayed by people around the child in relation to the voices, influenced voice-related distress and the nature of the voices in a triadic relationship. A continuum of multisensory features of voice content, nature, and relational significance is tentatively proposed to capture the breadth and depth of voice hearing for adolescents to offer a possible framework for future study and intervention design. Specifically, participants described that voice-related distress could be exacerbated by observed anxiety or internalized stigma about voice hearing, social isolation, and attribution to illness. These findings suggest that we may need to reconsider how the experience of hearing voices in childhood influences their relationships and how relationships influence the voice hearing experience. Further, young people seem to have a broad understanding of what the term "hearing voices" means, which could inform how researchers and practitioners work with this group of young people. Finally, participants described benefitting from multisensory coping strategies, such as imagery and meditation, which could offer important considerations for tailoring therapeutic interventions for adolescent voice hearers.

Abstract
In the present pilot study, we aimed to characterize the brain surface differences between 42 sporadic healthy individuals with AVHs (Hi-AVHs) and 50 healthy individuals without AVHs. The Auditory Hallucinations Rating Scale (AHRS) was used to assess the severity of AVHs, while the gyrification index and fractal dimensions were used to evaluate cerebral cortex complexity. We observed a significant increase of the gyrification index was located in the left superior temporal gyrus, the left temporoparietal junction, the left superior frontal gyrus, and the left parietal lobe. The fractal dimensions had significantly increased in the left Wernicke's area, the left Broca's areas and the left parietal lobe. Our pilot findings indicated gyrification index and fractal dimensions differences were only located in the left hemisphere between the groups of Hi-with and without AVHs. However, these differences did not correlate with the AVHs symptoms, and the non-hallucinating healthy individuals did not demonstrate corresponding reverse changes; hence we cannot postulate that cerebral cortex complexity alterations are related to AVHs. Our pilot study provides a clue for further studies aimed at investigating the brain features of Hi-AVHs.

Abstract
Background: Cognitive impairment is not only a core aspect of schizophrenia but also commonly observed in help-seeking youth at ultra high risk for psychosis (UHR), with potential implications for prognosis and individualized treatment. However, there is no consensus on the cognitive profile in the UHR state, partly due to lack of valid comparisons of performance in established schizophrenia and UHR. Objectives: To compare the cognitive functioning and profile of UHR subjects to a sample with schizophrenia, they were split into two groups based on duration of illness. Comparisons were made using coordinated norms based on healthy controls reflecting the younger UHR age spectrum. Methods: Participants for UHR (n = 51) and schizophrenia groups (n = 19 and n = 22) were included from the Prevention of Psychosis and Bergen Psychosis 2 projects. All subjects completed a comprehensive neurocognitive test battery aiming to measure speed of processing, working memory, verbal learning, reasoning, and problem solving, as well as visual problem solving. Cognitive functioning was compared between groups based on coordinated norms using z-scores derived by regression modeling from an age-matched healthy control group (n = 61). Results: UHR subjects showed significantly impaired speed of processing (p < 0.001) working memory (p = 0.042) and verbal learning, reasoning, and problem solving (p = 0.007) as compared to the control group. Visual problem-solving skills appeared unimpaired. UHR subjects significantly outperformed the schizophrenia group with duration of illness >3 years for speed of processing and working memory (both p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in performance between the UHR group and the group with duration of schizophrenia <3 years. Conclusion: Cognitive performance is impaired in UHR subjects as compared to healthy controls and should thus be monitored when a person is deemed at high risk of psychotic illness. Spatial skills, as measured by tests using physical objects, appear less affected than other domains. The pattern of impairment is similar to that of a group with recent onset schizophrenia but is less severe than in a group with duration of illness <3 years.
