Theoretical investigation into optical and electronic properties of 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives

Designing a turn-on ultrasensitive fluorescent probe based on ICT-FRET for detection and bioimaging of Hypochlorous acid

Hypochlorous acid (HClO) plays an essential role in biological systems. The characteristics of potent oxidization and short lifetime make it challenging to detect specifically from other reactive oxygen species (ROS) at cellular levels. Therefore, its detection and imaging with high selectivity and sensitivity are of great significance. Herein a turn-on HClO fluorescent probe (named RNB-OCl) with boronate ester as the recognition site was designed and synthesized. The RNB-OCl displayed good selective and ultrasensitive to HClO with a low detection limit of 1.36 nM by the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) dual mechanism in reducing the fluorescence background and improving the sensitivity. In addition, the role of the ICT-FRET was further demonstrated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the probe RNB-OCl was successfully employed for imaging HClO in living cells.

New 1,8-Naphthalimide Derivatives as Photoinitiators for Free-Radical Polymerization Upon Visible Light

Photopolymerization processes, and especially those carried out under visible light, are more and more widespread for their multiple advantages compared to thermal processes. In the present paper, new 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives are proposed as photoinitiators for free-radical polymerization upon visible light exposure using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at 395, 405, and 470 nm. These photoinitiators are used in combination with both iodonium salts and phosphine. The synthesis of these compounds as well as their excellent polymerization initiation ability for methacrylate monomers are presented in this article. A full picture of the involved chemical mechanisms is also provided thanks to photolysis, radical characterization, and redox measurements.

Computational Studies on Optoelectronic and Nonlinear Properties of Octaphyrin Derivatives

The electronic and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of octaphyrin derivatives were studied by employing the DFT/TDFT at CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G (2d, 2p) level of the theory. Thiophene, phenyl, methyl and cyano moieties were substituted on the molecular framework of octaphyrin core, in order to observe the change in optoelectronic and nonlinear response of these systems. The frontier molecular orbital studies and values of electron affinity reveals that the studied compounds are stable against the oxygen and moisture present in air. The calculated ionization energies, adiabatic electron affinity and reorganization energy values indicate that octaphyrin derivatives can be employed as effective n-type material for Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs). This character shows an enhancement with the introduction of an electron withdrawing group in the octaphyrin framework. The polarizability and hyperpolarizability values of octaphyrin derivatives demonstrate that they are good candidates for NLO devices. The nonlinear response of these systems shows enhancement on the introduction of electron donating groups on octaphyrin moiety. However, these claims needs further experimental verification.

Two-photon fluorescent probe derived from naphthalimide for cysteine detection and imaging in living cells

A maleimide coupling naphthalimide was reported as new two-photon fluorescent (TPF) probe for cysteine (Cys). The probe was weakly fluorescent itself due to the donor-excited photoinduced electron transfer (d-PET). After reaction with Cys, d-PET process was blocked and fluorescence enhancement of the probe was observed at 470 nm. The d-PET principle was rationalized by theoretical calculations with density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory. Thiol-maleimide addition between the probe and Cys was confirmed by (1)H NMR and mass spectrum measurements. TPF analysis demonstrated a 24.7-fold emission increase of the probe induced by Cys upon excitation at 760 nm. The two-photon action cross-section of probe-Cys adduct at 760 nm reached 42 GM compared to 1.7 GM for free probe. The probe showed high sensitivity and selectivity to Cys over other potential interferences; especially it had the capability to discriminate Cys from glutathione and homocysteine. Through TPF imaging, the probe was successfully applied in the detection of Cys in living cells.
