Molecular modeling of the piezoelectric properties of ferroelectric composites containing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and either graphene or graphene oxide

Investigation of nanoparticle-polymer interaction in bio-based nanosilica-filled PLA/NR nanocomposites: molecular dynamics simulation

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, by employing the COMPASS force field, was utilized to investigate structural and thermal characteristics as well as interfacial interactions between components of nanocomposite consisting of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/natural rubber (NR)/nanosilica, abbreviated as PSxN, where 1 ≤ x ≤ 7 and it represents the parts of SiO₂ nanoparticles added to the PLA/NR (PN) blend. Analysis of the obtained results including density (ρ), fractional free volume (FFV), glass transition temperature (T_g), interaction energy (E_interaction), and radial distribution function (RDF) of these nanocomposites was performed. Comparing E_interaction of nanocomposites with that of the PN blend showed that the interactions between the chains of the two polymers are highly dependent on the added amounts of silica nanoparticles, so that by adding silica to the PN blend to obtain PS1N and PS3N nanocomposites, the amount of E_interaction was reduced to a smaller positive value, which indicates the tendency of the nanocomposite's components to interact with each other. By further addition of silica nanoparticles to have PS5N and PS7N nanocomposites and then by analysis of the RDF results, it was found that the nanoparticles were not well dispersed in these two nanocomposites and they were accumulated in the NR rubbery phase. Therefore, the percolation threshold for silica loading on the PN blend is at most 3 parts (x = 3). These results as well as the other obtained simulation results were compared with the available experimental data, and the agreement observed between them approved the simulation procedure and validated the obtained results.

Recent Structure Development of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Based Piezoelectric Nanogenerator for Self-Powered Sensor

As the internet of things (IoT) era approaches, various sensors, and wireless electronic devices such as smartphones, smart watches, and earphones are emerging. As the types and functions of electronics are diversified, the energy consumption of electronics increases, which causes battery charging and maintenance issues. The piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) received great attention as an alternative to solving the energy issues of future small electronics. In particular, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric polymer-based PENGs are strong potential candidate with robust mechanical properties and a high piezoelectric coefficient. In this review, we summarize the recent significant advances of the development of PVDF-based PENGs for self-powered energy-harvesting systems. We discuss the piezoelectric properties of the various structures of PVDF-based PENGs such as thin film, microstructure, nanostructure, and nanocomposite.

Preparation, Stability and Local Piezoelectrical Properties of P(VDF-TrFE)/Graphene Oxide Composite Fibers

The unprecedented attributes such as biocompatibility and flexibility of macromolecular piezoelectric polymer has triggered an immense interested in scientific society for their potential exploitation in implantable electronic devices. In the present article, a theoretical and experimental investigation is done to explore the polarization behavior of composite fibers based on copolymer poly-trifluoroethylene P(VDF-TrFE) and graphene oxide (GO) with varying composition of the components is explored for its possible application in bioelectronic devices. Electromechanical properties of the PVDF/GO nanofibers were investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) method. The switching behavior, charge states, and piezoelectric response of the fibers were found to depend on the concentration of GO up to 20%. Theoretical models of PVDF chains, interacting with Graphene/GO layers has been used to explore the evolution of piezoresponse in the composite fibers. In order to compute piezoelectric coefficients, the behavior of composite in electrical fields has been modeled using software HyperChem. The experimental results are qualitatively correlated with a computed theoretical model.
