Theoretical prediction of the trigger linkage, cage strain, and explosive sensitivity of CL-20 in the external electric fields

Experimental detection of the diamino-pentazolium cation and theoretical exploration of derived high energy materials

In this work, we realized the detection of diamino-pentazolium cation (DAPZ+) in the reaction solution experimentally and proved it to be meta-diamino-pentazole based on the transition state theory. Quantum chemical methods were used to predict its spectral properties, charge distribution, stability and aromaticity. Considering that DAPZ+ has excellent detonation properties, it was further explored by assembling it with N5-, N3- and C(NO2)3- anions, respectively. The results show a strong interaction between DAPZ+ and the three anions, which will have a positive effect on its stability. Thanks to the high enthalpy of formation and density, the calculated detonation properties of the three systems are exciting, especially [DAPZ+][N5-] (D: 10,016 m·s-1; P: 37.94 GPa), whose actual detonation velocity may very likely exceed CL-20 (D: 9773 m·s-1). There is no doubt that this work will become the precursor for the theoretical exploration of new polynitrogen ionic compounds.

Regulation of external electric field on sensitivity of ICM energetic materials

CONTEXT

[2,2'-Bi(1,3,4-oxadiazole)]-5,5'-dinitramide (ICM-101), 2,4,6-triamino-5-nitropyrimidine-1,3-dioxide (ICM-102), and 6-nitro-7-azido-pyrazol[3,4-d][1,2,3]triazine-2-oxide (ICM-103) are excellent China-made explosives, but their performance under external electric fields (EEF) has never been explored, especially sensitivity. To study the induction effect of EEF on it, the chemical reactivity, electron localization function (ELF), spectrum, and other parameters were calculated by density functional theory. The results show that the increasing EEF can weaken the △E_HOMO-LUMO (△E_HOMO-LUMO = E_HOMO-E_LUMO) materials, making the stability worse and the sensitivity higher. The proportion of the positive electrostatic surface potential area is also smaller under the increasing EEF, indicating that ICM molecules are becoming more and more unstable. The ELF and localized orbital locator (LOL) decrease with the increase of EEF strength, which suggests that the trigger bond length increases, the E_BDE decreases, and the molecular sensitivity increases. When the intensity of EEF increases, the absorption peak of the molecular spectrum gradually redshifts, and even a weak new absorption peak appears, indicating that the color of the material may change. Finally, EEF strength affects electron density, nitro charge, and chemical reactivity parameters.

METHODS

Gaussian 16 software was used for calculation. The calculation levels are B3LYP/6-311G+ (d, p) and B3LYP/Def2-TZVPP. The optimized structure has a local true minimum energy on the potential energy surface and no imaginary frequency. Multiwfn 3.8 and VMD 1.9.3 were used in this work to analyze the ICM series of energetic material wave functions. The strength range of EEF is 0.000-0.016 a.u., and the increasing gradient is 0.002 a.u.

Harnessing Greenhouse Gases Absorption by Doped Fullerenes with Externally Oriented Electric Field

In this work, a theoretical investigation of the effects caused by the doping of C₂₀ with silicon (Si) atom as well as the adsorption of CO, CO₂ and N₂ gases to C₂₀ and C₁₉Si fullerenes was carried out. In concordance with previous studies, it was found that the choice of the doping site can control the structural, electronic, and energetic characteristics of the C₁₉Si system. The ability of C₂₀ and C₁₉Si to adsorb CO, CO₂ and N₂ gas molecules was evaluated. In order to modulate the process of adsorption of these chemical species to C₁₉Si, an externally oriented electric field was included in the theoretical calculations. It was observed that C₁₉Si is highly selective with respect to CO adsorption. Upon the increase of the electric field intensity the adsorption energy was magnified correspondingly and that the interaction between CO and C₁₉Si changes in nature from a physical adsorption to a partial covalent character interaction.

DFT Calculations for the HONO Elimination Process of CL-20 Conformers

The HONO elimination process is regarded to be an important initial decomposition process of energetic nitramines. Four CL-20 conformers based on the ε-CL-20 were obtained by the optimization at the m062x/cc-pvtz level in this study, and the Transition State (TS) and Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate (IRC) calculations were carried out at the same level. In addition, the rate coefficients and activation energy of the HONO elimination process were evaluated using conventional transition state theory (TST) and canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) with Eckart and small-curvature tunneling (SCT) methods to correct the transmission coefficients for the quantum tunneling effect. The calculation results have shown that the HONO elimination process concerning the nitro groups located on six numbered rings is the hardest to happen, and it seems that the longer distance between nitro groups and the adjacent hydrogen atom would result in the higher barrier energy; the HONO elimination process is most likely to happen for the axial positioning of nitro groups located on five numbered rings and most unlikely to happen for the ones located on six numbered rings; CL-20 II and CL-20 IV conformers are the most unstable one and most stable one concerning the reaction difficulty of the HONO elimination process.

The role of electric field on decomposition of CL-20/HMX cocrystal: A reactive molecular dynamics study

Electric field can initiate decomposition or detonation of explosives, but underlying mechanism is unclear. Here, we performed ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation for decomposition of a cocrystal, formed by 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane (HMX), solely induced by electric field. A new analytical method was proposed to obtain detailed decomposition mechanism. Results show that electric fields play important roles in decomposition of CL-20/HMX cocrystal, such as heating the system and causing the explosive to decompose. Strong constant field makes CL-20 molecules in the cocrystal decompose at significantly lower temperature, which greatly increases sensitivity. This is ascribed to the distinct decomposition mechanism that CN bond rupture dominates the initial step of CL-20's decomposition. Contrarily, oscillating field has a stronger heating effect but weaker influence on sensitivity. Moreover, HMX exhibits desensitizing effect in CL-20/HMX cocrystal under electric field. These results enhance our understanding of sensitivity mechanism beyond mechanical stimuli in explosives.

A correction into "Theoretical prediction of the trigger linkage, cage strain and explosive sensitivity of CL-20 in the external electric fields"

In order to obtain the more reliable impact sensitivities of CL-20 in the external electric fields, the calculation scheme for the sensitivities shown in the paper published in Journal of Molecular Modeling (entitled "Theoretical prediction of the trigger linkage, cage strain and explosive sensitivity of CL-20 in the external electric fields") was re-evaluated. We found that the model with the averages of the surface electrostatic potentials (ESPs) ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) may be more suitable for predicting the impact sensitivity of the cage-shaped CL-20 than those containing the variabilities of the surface ESPs ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) or the balance of charges (ν).

Towards Computational Screening for New Energetic Molecules: Calculation of Heat of Formation and Determination of Bond Strengths by Local Mode Analysis

The reliable determination of gas-phase and solid-state heats of formation are important considerations in energetic materials research. Herein, the ability of PM7 to calculate the gas-phase heats of formation for CNHO-only and inorganic compounds has been critically evaluated, and for the former, comparisons drawn with isodesmic equations and atom equivalence methods. Routes to obtain solid-state heats of formation for a range of single-component molecular solids, salts, and co-crystals were also evaluated. Finally, local vibrational mode analysis has been used to calculate bond length/force constant curves for seven different chemical bonds occurring in CHNO-containing molecules, which allow for rapid identification of the weakest bond, opening up great potential to rationalise decomposition pathways. Both metrics are important tools in rationalising the design of new energetic materials through computational screening processes.
