Oxidation of electrodeposited cobalt electrodes in an alkaline electrolyte

Electrochemical approaches for selective recovery of critical elements in hydrometallurgical processes of complex feedstocks

Critical minerals are essential for the ever-increasing urban and industrial activities in modern society. The shift to cost-efficient and ecofriendly urban mining can be an avenue to replace the traditional linear flow of virgin-mined materials. Electrochemical separation technologies provide a sustainable approach to metal recovery, through possible integration with renewable energy, the minimization of external chemical input, as well as reducing secondary pollution. In this review, recent advances in electrochemically mediated technologies for metal recovery are discussed, with a focus on rare earth elements and other key critical materials for the modern circular economy. Given the extreme heterogeneity of hydrometallurgically-derived media of complex feedstocks, we focus on the nature of molecular selectivity in various electrochemically assisted recovery techniques. Finally, we provide a perspective on the challenges and opportunities for process intensification in critical materials recycling, especially through combining electrochemical and hydrometallurgical separation steps.

Optimisation Study of Co Deposition on Chars from MAP of Waste Tyres as Green Electrodes in ORR for Alkaline Fuel Cells

Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) catalysts, from waste automobile tyres obtained from Microwave assisted pyrolysis (MAP), were enriched with Co and Cu using the simple treatments sonochemical and electrochemical deposition. Catalytic activity was evaluated through onset potential and number of exchanged electrons measurements. Electrochemical data demonstrate an improvement in catalytic activity of the electrochemical modified char with Co. Char electrodes enriched with Co show a maximum positive shift of 40 mV with respect to raw char electrodes with a number of exchanged electrons per O2 molecule close to 4 (as for Pt) for the best sample. This corresponds to a reduction of the production of unwanted oxygen peroxide from 23% for raw char to 1%. Sample structure evolution before and after electrochemical deposition and electro-catalysis was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy and XPS. Such electrochemical treatments open new possibilities of refining waste chars and finding an economic alternative to noble metals-based catalysts for alkaline fuel cells.

Synergy of Cobalt and Silver Microparticles Electrodeposited on Glassy Carbon for the Electrocatalysis of the Oxygen Reduction Reaction: An Electrochemical Investigation

The combination of two different metals, each of them acting on different steps of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yields synergic catalytic effects. In this respect, the electrocatalytic effect of silver is enhanced by the addition of cobalt, which is able to break the O–O bond of molecular oxygen, thus accelerating the first step of the reduction mechanism. At the same time, research is to further reduce the catalyst’s cost, reducing the amount of Ag, which, even though being much less expensive than Pt, is still a noble metal. From this point of view, using a small amount of Ag together with an inexpensive material, such as graphite, represents a good compromise. The aim of this work was to verify if the synergic effects are still operating when very small amounts of cobalt (2–10 μg·cm⁻²) are added to the microparticles of silver electrodeposited on glassy carbon, described in a preceding paper from us. To better stress the different behaviour observed when cobalt and silver are contemporarily present in the deposit, the catalytic properties of cobalt alone were investigated. The analysis was completed by the Levich plots to evaluate the number of electrons involved and by Tafel plots to show the effects on the reaction mechanism.
