Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPs) are the most important active component of tea and have become a research focus among natural products, thanks to their antioxidant, lipid-lowering, liver-protecting, anti-tumor, and other biological activities. Polyphenols can interact with other food components, such as protein, polysaccharides, lipids, and metal ions to further improve the texture, flavor, and sensory quality of food, and are widely used in food fields, such as food preservatives, antibacterial agents and food packaging. However, the instability of TPs under conditions such as light or heat and their low bioavailability in the gastrointestinal environment also hinder their application in food. In this review, we summarized the health benefits of TPs. In order to better use TPs in food, we analyzed the form and mechanism of interaction between TPs and main food components, such as polysaccharides and proteins. Moreover, we reviewed research into optimizing the applications of TPs in food by bio-based delivery systems, such as liposomes, nanoemulsions, and nanoparticles, so as to improve the stability and bioactivity of TPs in food application. As an effective active ingredient, TPs have great potential to be applied in functional food to produce benefits for human health.

Abstract
Plant-derived polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds widely distributed in plants. They have received greater attention in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to their potential health benefits, reducing the risk of some chronic diseases due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cardioprotective, and neuro-action properties. Polyphenolic compounds orally administered can be used as adjuvants in several treatments but with restricted uses due to chemical instability. The review discusses the different structural compositions of polyphenols and their influence on chemical stability. Despite the potential and wide applications, there is a need to improve the delivery of polyphenolics to target the human intestine without massive chemical modifications. Oral administration of polyphenols is unfeasible due to instability, low bioaccessibility, and limited bioavailability. Nano-delivery systems based on polysaccharides (starch, pectin, chitosan, and cellulose) have been identified as a viable option for oral ingestion, potentiate biological effects, and direct-controlled delivery in specific tissues. The time and dose can be individualized for specific diseases, such as intestinal cancer. This review will address the mechanisms by which polysaccharides-based nanostructured systems can protect against degradation and enhance intestinal permeation, oral bioavailability, and the potential application of polysaccharides as nanocarriers for the controlled and targeted delivery of polyphenolic compounds.

Abstract
In the last decades, evidence has indicated the beneficial properties of dietary polyphenols. In vitro and in vivo studies support that the regular intake of these compounds may be a strategy to reduce the risks of some chronic non-communicable diseases. Despite their beneficial properties, they are poorly bioavailable compounds. Thus, the main objective of this review is to explore how nanotechnology improves human health while reducing environmental impacts with the sustainable use of vegetable residues, from extraction to the development of functional foods and supplements. This extensive literature review discusses different studies based on the application of nanotechnology to stabilize polyphenolic compounds and maintain their physical-chemical stability. Food industries commonly generate a significant amount of solid waste. Exploring the bioactive compounds of solid waste has been considered a sustainable strategy in line with emerging global sustainability needs. Nanotechnology can be an efficient tool to overcome the challenge of molecular instability, especially using polysaccharides such as pectin as assembling material. Complex polysaccharides are biomaterials that can be extracted from citrus and apple peels (from the juice industries) and constitute promising wall material stabilizing chemically sensitive compounds. Pectin is an excellent biomaterial to form nanostructures, as it has low toxicity, is biocompatible, and is resistant to human enzymes. The potential extraction of polyphenols and polysaccharides from residues and their inclusion in food supplements may be a possible application to reduce environmental impacts and constitutes an approach for effectively including bioactive compounds in the human diet. Extracting polyphenolics from industrial waste and using nanotechnology may be feasible to add value to food by-products, reduce impacts on nature and preserve the properties of these compounds.

Abstract
Flavonoids are secondary metabolites commonly found in plants. They are known for their antioxidant properties, are part of the defense mechanisms of plants and are responsible for the pigmentation of fruit and flowers petals. Consumption foods rich in flavonoids in the daily diet brings a number of pro-health benefits - for example blood pressure regulation, delaying the aging process or anti-cancer effect. These compounds in synthetic or natural form are also used in pharmacy. The profile of flavonoid compounds can be quickly, accurately and easy determine in the test sample by using the infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Those methods are successfully used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Spectroscopy methods allow us to determine the chemical structure of these compounds. This review describes and compares differences between the spectroscopic spectra of individual compounds with the chemical structure for the flavonoids subgroups: flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, flavonols and anthocyanins.

Abstract
Due to its overexpression in cancer cells, the folate receptor (FR) is heavily exploited in the active targeting of nanoparticles (NPs). Its ligand, folic acid (FA) is as a consequence widely used as a NP targeting ligand. Although rather popular and successful in principle, recent data has shown that FA may result in breast cancer initiation and progression, which questions the suitability of FA as NP cancer targeting ligand. In this work, intravenous administration of free FA to healthy female mice resulted in breast tissue dysplasia, hyperplasia and in the increased expression of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), folate receptor (FR), cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15.3), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and the pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β. In addition to the reduction in IL2. To evaluate the suitability and safety of FA as NP targeting ligand in breast cancer, small (≈ 150 nm) and large (≈ 500 nm) chitosan NPs were formulated and decorated with two densities of FA. The success of active targeting by FA was confirmed in two breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells) in comparison to HEK293 cells. FA modified NPs that demonstrated successful active targeting in-vitro were assessed in-vivo. Upon intravenous administration, large NPs modified with a high density of FA accumulated in the breast tissue and resulted in similar effects as those observed with free FA. These results therefore question the suitability of FA as a targeting ligand in breast cancer and shed light on the importance of considering the activity (other than targeting) of the ligands used in NP active targeting.

Abstract
Anthocyanins are a group of phytochemicals responsible for the purple or red color of plants. Additionally, they are recognized to have health promoting functions including anti-cardiovascular, anti-thrombotic, anti-diabetic, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, and visual protective effect as well as anti-cancer activities. Thus, consumption of anthocyanin supplement or anthocyanin-rich foods has been recommended to prevent the risk of development of chronic diseases. However, the low stability and bioavailability of anthocyanins limit the efficacy and distribution of anthocyanins in human body. Thus, strategies to achieve target site-local delivery with good bioavailability and controlled release rate are necessary. This review introduced and discussed the latest advanced techniques of designing lipid-based, polysaccharide-based and protein-based complexes, nano-encapsulation and exosome to overcome the limitation of anthocyanins. The improved bioavailability and controlled release of anthocyanins have great significance for gastrointestinal tract absorption, transepithelial transportation and cellular uptake. The techniques of applying different biocompatible materials and modifying the solubility of anthocyanins complex could achieve target site-local delivery with negligible degradation and good bioavailability in human body.

Abstract
The use of glyceryl monooleate (GMO)-based nanoparticles has not yet been explored in overcoming the low bioavailability of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol with a known anticancer activity. Since the inclusion of a guest molecule can affect the curvature and the supramolecular structure of fully hydrated GMO-based phase, the phase behavior of bulk and dispersed liquid crystalline systems containing EGCG were explored by Small Angle Neutron Scattering and X-Ray Diffraction experiments. Molecular Dynamic Simulations showed how the interaction of EGCG with polar heads of GMO strongly affects the curvature and packing of GMO phase. The EGCG encapsulation efficiency was determined in the nanodispersions and their size studied by Dynamic Light Scattering and Atomic Force Microscopy. A nanodispersed formulation has been optimized with a cytotoxic effect more than additive of GMO and EGCG.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death globally. A variety of phenolic compounds display preventative and therapeutic effects against cancers. Green teas are rich in phenolics. Catechins are the most dominant phenolic component in green teas. Studies have shown that catechins have anticancer activity in various cancer models. The anticancer activity of catechins, however, may be compromised due to their low oral bioavailability. Nanodelivery emerges as a promising way to improve the oral bioavailability and anticancer activity of catechins. Research in this area has been actively conducted in recent decades. This review provides the molecular mechanisms of the anticancer effects of catechins, the factors that limit the oral bioavailability of catechins, and the latest advances of delivering catechins using nanodelivery systems through different routes to enhance their anticancer activity.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant polyphenolic constituent derived from green tea extract, which has demonstrated versatile bioactivities in combating cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer. In light of its anticancer activity, increasing attention has been paid to developing potent strategies involving EGCG in cancer chemotherapy. However, the poor bioavailability and stability of EGCG limits its effectiveness and practicality in real biomedical applications. To overcome this drawback, nanotechnology-facilitated drug delivery systems have been introduced and intensively explored to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of EGCG in cancer treatments and interventions. This review briefly discusses the anticancer mechanisms of EGCG, and then summarizes recent advances in engineering nanovehicles for encapsulating and delivering EGCG toward cancer therapy. In addition, we also highlight successful integrations of EGCG delivery with other chemotherapies, gene therapies, and phototherapies in one nanostructured entity for a combination therapy of cancers. To conclude, the current challenges and future prospects of the nanovehicle-based transportation systems of EGCG for cancer therapy are also discussed.

Abstract
Tea polyphenols (TPP) have shown various biological activities. However, due to their poor stability in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, TPP exhibit low absorption and bioavailability which limit their applications in food fields. Recently, several studies have focused on the utilization of nanotechnology to solve these problems. In this review, we introduced the embedding materials and methods of TPP-loaded nanoparticles and the potential mechanisms for improving bioavailability, such as to protect TPP from pH stress, enzymes and ions of the GI tract, and increase of the permeability. Furthermore, future challenges and application prospects of nanoparticles as carriers for the delivery of TPP were also discussed. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Nanotechnology is currently an emerging field in food science, which can be employed to increase the systemic delivery and bioavailability of phytochemicals. Due to the improved bioavailability, TPP-loaded nanoparticles can be developed as potential functional food. A better understanding of the nano-embedding technology and the potential mechanisms will allow us to better utilize nanomaterials to increase the bioavailability of TPP and expand their applications.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major polyphenolic constituent of green tea exhibits significant anti-cancer potential over a wide range of cancer cells. We have developed folate peptide decorated PLGA-NPs loaded with EGCG (FP-EGCG-NPs) to bind folate receptor (FR) specific breast cancer cell lines and evaluated their efficacy in pre-clinical studies. EGCG loaded PLGA nanoparticles (EGCG-NPs) were characterised for size, surface morphology, surface charge, encapsulation efficacy and in-vitro drug release kinetics. Cellular uptake and in-vitro cytotoxicities of free drug, folate peptide conjugated and unconjugated EGCG-NPs were investigated against FR positive MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells. The conjugated nanoparticles exhibited promising cytotoxic potentials as well as significantly high cellular internalisation in MDA-MB-231 cells as compared to unconjugated one. It also ensured longer half life, higher plasma concentration, favourably high apoptotic potential and significantly high mitochondrial depolarization effect as compared to free EGCG. The loaded nanoparticles were radiolabeled with technetium-99m and their tumor selectivity in MDA-MB-231 tumor bearing nude mice was investigated by scintigraphic imaging study. Finally in-vivo therapeutic efficacy studies in tumor bearing nude mice were also done to evaluate the efficacy of the formulation for cancer treatment.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has the highest antioxidant activity compared to the others catechins of green tea. However, the beneficial effects are mainly limited by its poor membrane permeability. A derivatization strategy to increase the EGCG interaction with lipid membranes is considered as one feasible approach to expand its application in lipophilic media, in particular the cellular absorption. At this purpose the hydrophilic EGCG was modified by inserting an aliphatic C18 chain linked to the gallate ring by an ethereal bond, the structure determined by NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and confirmed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the mono-alkylated EGCG (C18-EGCG) was studied by the DPPH and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) assays, and its ability to protect cells towards oxidative stress was evaluated in Adult Retinal Pigmented Epithelium (ARPE-19) cells. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation and liposomal/buffer partition were used to study the interaction of the modified and unmodified antioxidants with a cell membrane model: the combined experimental-in silico approach shed light on the higher affinity of C18-EGCG toward lipid bilayer. Although the DPPH assay stated that the functionalization decreases the EGCG activity against free radicals, from cellular experiments it resulted that the lipid moiety increases the antioxidant protection of the new lipophilic derivative.

Abstract
Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), represents a subtype of breast cancer in which the estrogens receptor (ER) negative, the progesterone receptor (PR) negative and the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) negative, are not expressed. Thusly, TNBC does not respond to hormonal therapies or to those targeting the HER2 protein receptors. To overcome this flawed issue, new alternative therapies based on the use of natural substances, as the (-) - epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), has been proposed. It is largely documented that EGCG, the principal constituent of green tea, has suppressive effects on different types of cancer, including breast cancer, through the regulation of different signaling pathways. Thus, is reasonable to assume that EGCG could be viewed as a therapeutic option for the prevention and the treatment of TNBC. Here, we summarizing these promising results with the scope of turn a light on the potential roles of EGCG in the treatment of TNBC patients.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant polyphenolic constituent derived from green tea extract, which has demonstrated versatile bioactivities in combating cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer. In light of its anticancer activity, increasing attention has been paid to developing potent strategies involving EGCG in cancer chemotherapy. However, the poor bioavailability and stability of EGCG limits its effectiveness and practicality in real biomedical applications. To overcome this drawback, nanotechnology-facilitated drug delivery systems have been introduced and intensively explored to enhance the bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of EGCG in cancer treatments and interventions. This review briefly discusses the anticancer mechanisms of EGCG, and then summarizes recent advances in engineering nanovehicles for encapsulating and delivering EGCG toward cancer therapy. In addition, we also highlight successful integrations of EGCG delivery with other chemotherapies, gene therapies, and phototherapies in one nanostructured entity for a combination therapy of cancers. To conclude, the current challenges and future prospects of the nanovehicle-based transportation systems of EGCG for cancer therapy are also discussed.

Abstract
Numerous natural products originated from Chinese herbal medicine exhibit anti-cancer activities, including anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-metastatic, anti-angiogenic effects, as well as regulate autophagy, reverse multidrug resistance, balance immunity, and enhance chemotherapy in vitro and in vivo. To provide new insights into the critical path ahead, we systemically reviewed the most recent advances (reported since 2011) on the key compounds with anti-cancer effects derived from Chinese herbal medicine (curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, berberine, artemisinin, ginsenoside Rg3, ursolic acid, silibinin, emodin, triptolide, cucurbitacin B, tanshinone I, oridonin, shikonin, gambogic acid, artesunate, wogonin, β-elemene, and cepharanthine) in scientific databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, Scopus, and Clinical Trials). With a broader perspective, we focused on their recently discovered and/or investigated pharmacological effects, novel mechanism of action, relevant clinical studies, and their innovative applications in combined therapy and immunomodulation. In addition, the present review has extended to describe other promising compounds including dihydroartemisinin, ginsenoside Rh2, compound K, cucurbitacins D, E, I, tanshinone IIA and cryptotanshinone in view of their potentials in cancer therapy. Up to now, the evidence about the immunomodulatory effects and clinical trials of natural anti-cancer compounds from Chinese herbal medicine is very limited, and further research is needed to monitor their immunoregulatory effects and explore their mechanisms of action as modulators of immune checkpoints.

Abstract
Nontargeted delivery systems present nonspecific delivery, low transfection efficiency and high toxicity. Ligand-conjugated chitosan (CS) nanocarriers have emerged as an outstanding option for achieving active delivery specifically and preferentially to the target sites by exploiting receptors mediated endocytosis. Mannosylated CS nanocarriers have brought tremendous breakthrough in gene therapy and have proven to be an excellent choice for treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Similarly, folate and antibodies-conjugated CS play a significant role in diagnosis and treatment of various cancers. Current evidences obviously propose ligand-decorated CS as an attractive option for diagnosis and treatment of dreadful conditions. In order to bring huge revolution in the field of targeted delivery, challenges associated with these nanocarriers needs to be addressed.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a natural phenolic compound found in many plants, especially in green tea, which is a popular and restorative beverage with many claimed health benefits such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity activities. Despite its great curative potential, the poor bioavailability of EGCG restricts its clinical applcation. However, nanoformulations of EGCG are emerging as new alternatives to traditional formulations. This review focuses on the nanochemopreventive applications of various EGCG nanoparticles such as lipid-based, polymer-based, carbohydrate-based, protein-based, and metal-based nanoparticles. EGCG hybridized with these nanocarriers is capable of achieving advanced functions such as targeted release, active targeting, and enhanced penetration, ultimately increasing the bioavailability of EGCG. In addition, this review also summarizes the challenges for the use of EGCG in therapeutic applications, and suggests future directions for progress.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenolic catechin from green tea, well known for being bioactive in age-associated pathologies where oxidative stress plays a preeminent role. The activity of this molecule is however contrasted by its high chemical and metabolic instability that determines a poor concentration of the antioxidant within the biological system after administration. In order to protect the molecule and increase its delivery efficiency, we have encapsulated EGCG inside anionic liposomes made of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine and cholesteryl hemisuccinate. To maximize EGCG internalization, magnesium salt was added in the preparation. However stable nanodispersions suitable for drug delivery were obtained only after treatment with Poloxamer-407, a polyethylene-propylene glycol copolymer. The structural and morphological properties of the produced dispersion were studied by X-ray diffraction, which showed a multilamellar structure even after EGCG addition and an ordering effect of Poloxamer-407; Dynamic Light Scattering demonstrated serum stability of the liposomes. The characterization was completed by evaluating both encapsulation efficiency (100%, in the final formulation) and in vitro EGCG release. Since oxidative stress is involved in numerous retinal degenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, the ability of these liposomes to contrast H2O2-induced cell death was assessed in human retinal cells. Morphological changes at the subcellular level were analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy, which showed that mitochondria were better preserved in cells treated with liposomes then those treated with free EGCG. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that the produced formulation enhances the efficacy of EGCG under stress conditions, thus representing a potential formulation for the intracellular delivery of EGCG in diseases caused by oxidative damage.

Abstract
(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has attracted significant research interest due to its health-promoting effects such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation and anti-cancer activities. However, its instability and poor bioavailability have largely limited its efficacy and application. Food-grade materials such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids show biodegradability, biocompatibility and biofunctionality properties. Food-grade encapsulation systems are usually used to improve the bioavailability of EGCG. In the present paper, we provide an overview of materials and techniques used in encapsulating EGCG, in which the adsorption mechanisms of food-grade systems during in vitro digestion are reviewed. Moreover, the potential challenges and future work using food-grade encapsulates for delivering EGCG are also discussed.

Abstract
Catechins, present in many fruits and vegetables, have many health benefits, but they are prone to degradation. Nano- and micro-particle systems have been used to stabilise catechins when exposed to adverse environments and to improve their bioavailability after ingestion. This review discusses the inherent properties of various catechins, the design of delivery formulations and the properties of catechin-loaded nano- and micro-particles. The protection afforded to catechins during exposure to harsh environmental conditions and gastrointestinal tract transit is reviewed. The bioavailability and efficacy of encapsulated catechins, as assessed by various in vitro and in vivo conditions, are discussed. Bioavailability based on uptake in the upper gut alone underestimates the bioavailability as polyphenols. The caveats with interpretation of bioavailability based on various tests are discussed, when taking into consideration the pathways of catechin metabolism including the role of the gut microflora. However, taken together, the weight of the evidence suggests that there are potentially improved health benefits with the use of appropriately designed nano- and micro-particles for delivery of catechins. Further systematic studies on the metabolism and physiological effects of encapsulated catechins in vivo and clinical trials are needed to validate the bioefficacy of the encapsulated catechins.

Abstract
The optimal preparation parameters to create anthocyanin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles was predicted using response surface methodology (RSM). A Box-Behnken design was used to determine the preparation parameters that would achieve the preferred particle size and high encapsulation efficiency. The result suggested that the optimized conditions were 2.86mg/mL carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), 0.98mg/mL chitosan hydrochloride (CHC) and 5.97mg anthocyanins. Using the predicted amounts, the experimentally prepared particles averaged 219.53nm with 63.15% encapsulation efficiency. The result was less than 5% different than the predicted result of 214.83nm particle size and 61.80% encapsulation efficiency. Compared with the free anthocyanin solution, the anthocyanin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles showed a slowed degradation in simulated gastrointestinal fluid. Compared with the free anthocyanin solutions in a model beverage system, the stability of the anthocyanins was increased in the anthocyanin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles.

Abstract
Tea leaf (Camellia sinensis) is rich in catechins, which endow tea with various health benefits. There are more than ten catechin compounds in tea, among which epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) is the most abundant. Epidemiological studies on the association between tea consumption and the risk of breast cancer were summarized, and the inhibitory effects of tea catechins on breast cancer, with EGCG as a representative compound, were reviewed in the present paper. The controversial results regarding the role of tea in breast cancer and areas for further study were discussed.

Abstract
A new chitosan microparticles loading paclitaxel (PTX) for application as an oral delivery system were developed using a novel double emulsion crosslinking method. To improve the targeted effect, folic acid (FA) was introduced onto the surface of microparticles using chemical method. The method was based on Schiff reaction between amino group of chitosan and carboxyl group of FA, and folate-chitosan (FA-CS) conjugate was characterized using infrared spectrum analysis (FT-IR), and the microparticles were named as FA-CS-PTX/MPs. FA-CS-PTX/MPs had larger size of average diameter 223.6 nm, while PTX-loaded chitosan microparticles (CS-PTX/MPs) had 179.1 nm average diameter. The zeta potential of CS-PTX/MPs and FA-CS-PTX/MPs was 22.3 and 33.1 mV, respectively. SEM and TEM showed both the two microparticles had well-defined spherical structure. The in vitro drug release was studied under different pH conditions, and a two-phase kinetics model was found to be the most adequate kinetic model. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity activities of drug-carriers against L929 cells and the cellular uptake of PTX-loaded microparticles against HepG2 cells were investigated. Results demonstrated that FA-CS-PTX/MPs might be a promising drug carrier for promoting PTX cellular uptake and could be used as a potential tumor-targeted drug vector.

Abstract
Age-related, diet-related and protein conformational diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, cancer, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are common in the elderly population. The potential of chitosan, chitooligosaccharides and their derivatives in prevention and treatment of age-related dysfunctions is reviewed and discussed in this paper. The influence of oxidative stress, low density lipoprotein oxidation, increase of tissue stiffness, protein conformational changes, aging-associated chronic inflammation and their pathobiological significance have been considered. The chitosan-based functional food also has been reviewed.
