Abstract
Infection by human herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1/2) is common globally though with wide regional variability. Seroepidemiology of HSV-1/2 infections is of utmost importance in formulating control strategies, but there is a paucity of data from many regions of India. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anti-HSV-1/2 antibodies in Uttarakhand and adjoining areas and to study its pattern and distribution in different subgroups. Serum samples from 322 cases were subjected to ELISA test to check for the presence of anti-HSV-1/2 IgG and IgM antibodies. Sociodemographic and clinical information were extracted from medical records. The association of seropositivity and associated factors was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. The overall HSV-1/2 seropositivity was observed to be 46.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.5-51.4). Total IgM and IgG were found in 6.2% (95% CI: 3.6-8.8) and 45.3% (95% CI: 38.1-48.9) cases, respectively. No significant difference between seropositivity of males and females was observed (45.7% in males versus 46.2% in females; p value: 0.928). Seroprevalence increased with age in both genders but was more pronounced in males (p value: <0.001), while 50.6% of women in the reproductive age group (18-30 years) were found to be seropositive. Females from Uttarakhand, compared to adjoining states (p value: 0.041) and both men and women residing in hilly terrain compared to plains (p value: 0.018; p value: 0.030), showed significantly lower prevalence, while urban-dwelling men showed higher seropositivity (p value: 0.048). Thus, HSV-1/2 seroprevalence is lower in this region, especially in young, rural, and hill dwellers, indicating majority are vulnerable to acquiring new infections. More awareness among high-risk groups and implementation of targeted public health policies can help control the disease burden.

Abstract
Background To explore the causal association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, herpesvirus infection and periodontitis (PD) from a genetic perspective using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods The PD data were derived from genome-wide association study (GWAS) from the Dental Endpoints (GLIDE) consortium, and the FinnGen Biobank provided data on H. pylori and herpesvirus infections. In addition, we examined GWAS data for subtypes of H. pylori and herpesvirus infection. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was selected as a major analysis technique, and weighted median (WM), weighted model, simple model, and MR-Egger regression were added as supplementary methods. To verify the findings, the effects of pleiotropy and heterogeneity were assessed. Results Genetically predicted H. pylori infection (OR = 0.914, 95%CI = 0.693-1.205, P = 0.523), anti-H. pylori VacA (OR = 0.973, 95%CI = 0.895-1.057, P = 0.515), anti-H. pylori CagA (OR = 1.072, 95%CI = 0.986-1.164; P = 0.102), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (OR = 1.026, 95%CI = 0.940-1.120, P = 0.567), Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection (OR = 0.962, 95%CI = 0.883-1.048, P = 0.372), cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (OR = 1.025, 95%CI = 0.967-1.088, P = 0.415), EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA1) (OR = 1.061, 95%CI = 0.930-1.209, P = 0.378), EBV virus capsid antigen (VCA) (OR = 1.043, 95CI% = 0.890-1.222, P = 0.603), HSV-1 (OR = 1.251, 95%CI = 0.782-2.001, P = 0.351), HSV-2 (OR = 1.020, 95%CI = 0.950-1.096, P = 0.585), CMV IgG (OR = 0.990, 95CI% = 0.882-1.111, P = 0.861) were not associated with PD, indicated that H. pylori and herpesvirus infection had no causal relationship to PD. Reverse studies also found no cause effect of PD on H. pylori or herpesvirus infection. The results of the sensitivity analysis suggested the robustness of the MR results. Conclusion This study offered preliminary proof that H. pylori and herpesvirus infections were not causally linked to PD, and vice versa. However, more robust instrumental variables (IVs) and larger samples of GWAS data were necessary for further MR analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vestibular neuritis (VN) is one of the most common peripheral vestibular balance disorder. Demographic and other risk factors associated with VN are insufficiently published. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify associated risk factors in patients with acute VN. METHODS This study evaluated all hospitalized VN cases between 2017-2019. Inclusion criteria was an otoneurologically confirmed diagnosis of acute VN. Patient data was compared with data of the German normal population (Robert Koch Institute, "Gesundheit in Deutschland aktuell"). RESULTS 168 patients (Ø 59.8 years) were included. Compared with the normal German population, the study population was significantly more likely to have preexisting cardiovascular diseases, and the male patients were significantly more likely to have arterial hypertension. No significant differences were measurable between the study population and the normal population for other secondary diseases. Leukocytosis was present in 23% on admission, and 9% of patients reported a history of VZV or HSV-1 disease. DISCUSSION Etiology and pathogenesis of VN are poorly understood. Inflammatory and vascular causes are discussed. In this study, patients had increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease compared with the normal population, but the study population had a higher average age. Currently, it is unclear what significance nonspecific elevated leukocyte values could have as a possible sign of VN triggered by an infection. Since the number of inpatient cases with VN is rising, prospective studies should be performed to get a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess incidence and burden of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections and to explore possible transmission routes. METHODS A 2-year prospective nationwide surveillance study performed in 2017 and 2018. All German paediatric departments (n=464 in 2017, n=441 in 2018) were contacted on a monthly basis to report potential cases of neonatal HSV infections. Infants with a postnatal age of ≤60 days and a positive HSV PCR or HSV culture from skin, mucous membrane, vesicles or conjunctival smear, blood or cerebrospinal fluid were included in the study. RESULTS 37 cases were analysed. 29 patients who exhibited no or only mild clinical symptoms were discharged home without organ damage or neurological abnormalities. Four patients showed significant neurological impairment, one patient required liver transplantation and two patients died during in-patient treatment. The 2-year incidence of neonatal HSV infections was 2.35 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 1.69 to 3.02) and disease-specific mortality was 0.13 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 0.04 to 0.21). Data on possible transmission routes were available in 23 cases. In 20 cases, an orofacial HSV infection was present in one or more family members. An active maternal genital HSV infection was reported in 3 cases. CONCLUSION Neonatal HSV infections are rare in Germany. Most infants have a benign clinical course, but some infants are severely affected. Postnatal HSV exposure may account for a considerable number of neonatal HSV infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes infections are common infections among populations. Herein, a cross-sectional study was used to determine the seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) IgG antibodies and their association with potential infection risk factors among Jordanians. METHODS A total of 759 serum samples were collected (January to February 2020) and analyzed for HSV-1 and HSV-2 IgG antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Estimates for population seropositivity were determined by weighting the age-specific seroprevalence by the size of the population in each age stratum. RESULTS The population estimate for HSV-1 seroprevalence was 75.3%. After adjustment for possible confounders, regression analysis revealed higher seroprevalence with increase in age (p < 0.005) and low household income (p = 0.002). The population estimate for HSV-2 seroprevalence was 2.9%. No significant differences in HSV-2 seroprevalence were observed in association with age, gender, family size, educational level, and socioeconomic status, likely due to low seropositivity. CONCLUSIONS Jordanians have high HSV-1 and low HSV-2 seroprevalence. Periodical studies might be needed to evaluate changes in HSV-1 and HSV-2 seroprevalence over time. This study provides essential epidemiological data for Jordan and the Middle East and North Africa region.

Abstract
Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections among women of the reproductive age. It is estimated to affect about 2-3% of pregnant women. Vertical transmission during pregnancy is rare occurring in less than 1% of cases but for those with active lesions or shedding the virus asymptomatically the risk of vertical transmission intrapartum is high. Neonates with HSV may develop severe consequences such as disseminated, central nervous system and skin, eye mouth/mucous disease or suffer mortality. A high index of suspicion, timely diagnosis and institution of appropriate treatment during acute and recurrent episodes will reduce the risk of vertical transmission and therefore neonatal consequences. Routine screening for HSV in pregnancy is not recommended. This review provides an overview of HSV in pregnancy, diagnosis and management especially around unique scenarios such as prelabour preterm rupture of fetal membranes and presentation with active disease in labour.

Abstract
Infections in immunosuppressed patients represent a particular challenge in the diagnostics and treatment. They often present with atypical and particularly severe courses, for which rapid diagnostics and treatment are decisive for treatment success. Opportunistic infections with human herpes viruses occur not only more frequently in immunocompromised patients compared to healthy people but also represent a special challenge. In the treatment of immunosuppressed patients, e.g. with human immunodeficiency virus infections and patients with solid organ transplantations, infections with herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus are particularly important. The symtoms are very variable, ranging from asymptomatic detection of viremia to vital life-threatening organ manifestations. This review article describes the most important clinical presentations of these opportunistic infections. Furthermore, the diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic strategies for human herpes viruses are summarized.

Abstract
Preceding viral infections have mostly been described in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in single cases. We aimed to identify viral infections that potentially trigger AIH, as suggested for hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections. Therefore, antibodies against hepatitis A (HAV), B, C and E viruses; hepatotropic herpesviruses; and parvovirus B19 (PVB19) were analyzed retrospectively in 219 AIH patients at diagnosis, 356 patients with other liver diseases and 89 children from our center. Untreated adult AIH (aAIH) patients showed higher anti-HEV seroprevalences at diagnosis than patients with other liver diseases. Untreated aAIH patients had no increased incidence of previous hepatitis A, B or C. Antibodies against hepatotropic herpesviruses in untreated AIH were in the range published for the normal population. Untreated pediatric AIH (pAIH) patients had evidence of more previous HAV and PVB19 infections than local age-matched controls. The genetic AIH risk factor HLA DRB1*03:01 was more frequent in younger patients, and DRB1*04:01 was more frequent in middle-aged patients without an obvious link to virus seropositivities. Pediatric and adult AIH seem to be distinct in terms of genetic risk factors and preceding viral infections. While associations cannot prove causal relations, the results suggest that hepatotropic virus infections could be involved in AIH pathogenesis.

Abstract
Background Herpes simplex infections (HSV1/2) are characterized by recurrent symptoms, a risk of neonatal herpes, and the facilitation of HIV transmission. In Germany, HSV1/2 infections are not notifiable and data are scarce. A previous study found higher HSV1/2 seroprevalences in women in East Germany than in women in West Germany. We assessed changes in the HSV1/2 seroprevalences over time and investigated determinants associated with HSV1/2 seropositivity to guide prevention and control. Methods The study was based on the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults (DEGS; 2008–2011) and the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey (GNHIES; 1997–1999). We tested serum samples from DEGS participants for HSV1 and HSV2 immunoglobulin G. We used Pearson’s χ2 test to compare the HSV1/HSV2 seroprevalences in terms of sex, age, and region of residence (East/West Germany) and investigated potential determinants by calculating prevalence ratios (PR) with log-binomial regression. All statistical analyses included survey weights. Results In total, 6627 DEGS participants were tested for HSV1, and 5013 were also tested for HSV2. Overall, HSV1 seroprevalence decreased significantly from 1997–1999 (82.1%; 95%CI 80.6–83.6) to 2008–2011 (78.4%; 95%CI 77.8–79.7). In the same period, overall HSV2 seroprevalence decreased significantly from 13.3% (95%CI 11.9–14.9) to 9.6% (95%CI 8.6–10.8), notably in 18–24-year-old men (10.4 to 0%) in East Germany. Women were more likely than men to be seropositive for HSV1 (PR 1.1) or HSV2 (PR 1.6). A lower level of education, smoking, and not speaking German were associated with HSV1 in both sexes. Women of older age, who smoked, or had a history of abortion and men of older age or who had not attended a nursery school during childhood were more often seropositive for HSV2. Conclusion The reduced seroprevalences of HSV1 and HSV2 leave more people susceptible to genital HSV1/2 infections. Practitioners should be aware of HSV infection as a differential diagnosis for genital ulcers. We recommend educational interventions to raise awareness of the sexual transmission route of HSV1/2, possible consequences, and prevention. Interventions should especially target pregnant women, their partners, and people at risk of HIV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasingly observed in men who have sex with men (MSM), which is associated with the success in the antiretroviral treatment of HIV infection. Additionally, in heterosexuals, anal intercourse is more prevalent than previously assumed. Thus, anorectal manifestations of STIs are not a rare condition. OBJECTIVES This review will focus on the clinical picture, diagnosis and therapy of frequent STIs involving the anorectal region. CONCLUSIONS Due to localisation and frequent asymptomatic course, STIs in this region often pose diagnostic problems. Anorectal manifestations of STIs consist of tumorous masses, ulcers or proctitis and may be misdiagnosed as malignancy or inflammatory bowel disease. Herpes simplex and syphilis primarily show ulcerations and may involve the perianal region, whereas gonorrhoea and lymphogranuloma venereum mainly cause proctitic symptoms with exsudation. Because of commonly occurring coinfections a complete diagnostic workup concerning other STIs should be performed.

Abstract
The development of efficient strategies for generating fully human monoclonal antibodies with unique functional properties that are exploitable for tailored therapeutic interventions remains a major challenge in the antibody technology field. Here, we present a methodology for recovering such antibodies from antigen-encountered human B cell repertoires. As the source for variable antibody genes, we cloned immunoglobulin G (IgG)-derived B cell repertoires from lymph nodes of 20 individuals undergoing surgery for head and neck cancer. Sequence analysis of unselected “LYmph Node Derived Antibody Libraries” (LYNDAL) revealed a naturally occurring distribution pattern of rearranged antibody sequences, representing all known variable gene families and most functional germline sequences. To demonstrate the feasibility for selecting antibodies with therapeutic potential from these repertoires, seven LYNDAL from donors with high serum titers against herpes simplex virus (HSV) were panned on recombinant glycoprotein B of HSV-1. Screening for specific binders delivered 34 single-chain variable fragments (scFvs) with unique sequences. Sequence analysis revealed extensive somatic hypermutation of enriched clones as a result of affinity maturation. Binding of scFvs to common glycoprotein B variants from HSV-1 and HSV-2 strains was highly specific, and the majority of analyzed antibody fragments bound to the target antigen with nanomolar affinity. From eight scFvs with HSV-neutralizing capacity in vitro,the most potent antibody neutralized 50% HSV-2 at 4.5 nM as a dimeric (scFv)2. We anticipate our approach to be useful for recovering fully human antibodies with therapeutic potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) have been suspected to play a causal role in periodontitis pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of these viruses in subgingival plaque samples of Caucasian patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis compared to periodontally healthy controls. METHODS A total of 65 patients with aggressive periodontitis and 65 unmatched controls from Germany were investigated in the study. Subgingival plaque samples were analysed for the presence of HSV-1, EBV and HCMV by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. Viral antibody titres were determined quantitatively by immunosorbent assays. RESULTS DNA of HSV-1 and HCMV were detected in 1.5% of the patients and controls, whereas EBV DNA was present in 10.8% and 13.9% respectively. Detection rates of serum IgG against HSV-1 (76.1% versus 73.9%), EBV (98.5% versus 96.9%), HCMV (47.7% versus 46.2%) and IgM levels against HSV-1 (6.2% versus 1.5%), EBV (0% versus 0%), HCMV (0% versus 1.5%) did not significantly differ between patients and controls. CONCLUSION The data of our study do not suggest any contribution of HSV-1, EBV or HCMV to aggressive periodontitis in a German population. Ethnic and methodological aspects might have caused conflicting results of previous studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe herpes simplex virus encephalitis despite normal cell count in the cerebrospinal fluid in patients with malignoma after whole brain irradiation. INTERVENTIONS Blood and cerebrospinal fluid analysis and magnetic resonance imaging. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Three male and two female patients with malignoma and a recent history of whole-brain irradiation presented with impaired consciousness with or without epileptic seizure. Although cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed a normal cell count, herpes simplex virus DNA was detected in all samples by polymerase chain reaction. CONCLUSIONS In patients with impaired consciousness, epileptic seizure, or temporal lobe symptoms of new onset and a recent history of brain irradiation with normal cerebrospinal fluid, an atypical anergic course of herpes simplex virus encephalitis should be considered. Herpes simplex virus polymerase chain reaction should be used as method of choice to detect herpes simplex virus genomes as early as possible rather than relying on routine cerebrospinal fluid parameters. Importantly, antiviral therapy should be started without delay in any case of faint suspicion and should be continued until herpes simplex virus encephalitis is clearly ruled out.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) represent a major global health problem leading to morbidity, mortality and stigma. Prior to this study there was no information on the prevalence and knowledge of STIs in Faisalabad, Pakistan. DESIGN AND SETTING Prospective, cross-sectional study in patients attending STI clinics from July 2006 to September 2009. PATIENTS AND METHODS After obtaining consent, patients completed structured questionnaires used for behavioral surveys. Blood and urethral swabs were collected and tested for syphilis, gonococcus, genital herpes, chlamydia and chancroid. RESULT Mean (standard deviation) age of the 1532 participants was 38.9 (9.4) years, including 37.8 (10.2) years for males and 35.5 (6.3) years females. Male gender (n=1276, 83.3%), low socioeconomic class (n=1026, 67.0%) and residence in rural suburbs (n=970, 63.3%) were more common. Most (n=913, 59.6%) were aware of the modes of transmission of STIs and the associated complications, 20% (n=306) were condom users, and 21.2% (n=324) had knowledge of safe sex. Opposite-sex partners were preferred by 972 (63.4%) patients, while 29.9% (n=458) had both homosexual and heterosexual sex partners. Syphilis was present in 29.5% of patients (n=452); gonorrhea, in 13% (n=200), HSV-2, in 3.2% (n=49), chlamydia, in 4.7% (n=72) and chancroid, in 1.3% (n=20). CONCLUSION This report establishes baseline local prevalence rates for STIs. Syphilis emerged as the most prevalent STI in Faisalabad. Population-based studies are required to study the epidemiology of STIs, along with initiation of national health-education campaign.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently two different herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) clades (A and B) were described on DNA sequence data of the glycoprotein E (gE), G (gG) and I (gI) genes. OBJECTIVE To type the circulating HSV-2 wild-type strains in Germany by a novel approach and to monitor potential changes in the molecular epidemiology between 1997 and 2008. STUDY DESIGN A total of 64 clinical HSV-2 isolates were analyzed by a novel approach using the DNA sequences of the complete open reading frames of glycoprotein B (gB) and gG. Recombination analysis of the gB and gG gene sequences was performed to reveal intragenic recombinants. RESULTS Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the gB coding DNA sequence 8 of 64 (12%) isolates were classified as clade A strains and 56 of 64 (88%) isolates were classified as clade B strains. Analysis of the gG coding DNA sequence classified 4 (6%) isolates as clade A strains and 60 (94%) isolates as clade B strains. In comparison, the 8 isolates classified as clade A strains using the gB sequence data were classified as clade B strains when using the gG coding DNA sequence, suggesting intergenic recombination events. Intragenic recombination events were not detected. CONCLUSION The first molecular survey of clinical HSV-2 isolates from Germany demonstrated the circulation of clade A and B strains and of intergenic recombinants over a period of 12 years.

Abstract
Acute parvovirus B19 infection is a risk for pregnant women. After vertical transmission the infected fetus may develop hydrops fetalis. Since B19 infection occurs mainly during childhood, children represent a main source for virus transmission. In order to determine whether certain groups in the German population show increased risks for B19 infection we analysed the seroprevalence using 6583 sera collected from adults in former Eastern and Western Germany during the German National Health Survey and 649 sera from healthy Thuringian children and adolescents. In adults the overall seroprevalence was 72.1%, rising from 20.4% in children (1-3 years) and 66.9% in adolescents (18-19 years) to 79.1% in the elderly (65-69 years). Significant differences were observed between females (73.3%) and males (70.9%) and between inhabitants of small (74.8%) and big cities (69.0%) but not between people of the former Eastern (72.8%) and Western states (72.0%) of Germany. For women during childbearing age (18-49 years) highest values were observed in those living together with two or more children (81.6%) and in women with occupational contact with children aged <6 years (88.9%). In contrast seroprevalence was significantly lower in age-matched female singles (64.8%) and in women with occupational contact with children aged >6 years and adolescents (63.8%).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Herpes simplex viruses type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are alpha herpes viruses. Humans are the only natural host and they can be transmitted through oral or genital secretions. These viruses are ubiquitous all over the world, with different percentage rates. The aims of this paper were to determine the serological response to HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection among pregnant women and women of reproductive age and seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies among pregnant women and women of reproductive age. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 81 serum samples were analyzed. 32 sera were collected from pregnant women, and 49 sera were from non-pregnant women of reproductive age. Serum samples were tested for IgM antibodies to both herpes simplex viruses by use of immunoenzymatic assay (Bioelisa HSV IgM Immunocapture; Biokit, Spain)). Sero-type specific ELISA tests: Bioelisa HSV-1 IgG and Bioelisa HSV-2 IgG (Biokit, Spain) were used for detection of IgG antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively. RESULTS Type-common IgM antibodies were found in 6.25% of pregnant women, and in 4.08% of women of reproductive age. Type-specific IgG antibodies to HSV-1 were detected in 68.75% of pregnant women, and in 81.63% of non-pregnant women. The seroprevalence of HSV-1 in our sample was 76.5%. Type-specific IgG antibodies to HSV-2 were detected in 12.5% of pregnant women, and in 12.24% of non-pregnant women of reproductive age. The seroprevalence of HSV-2 in the whole sample was 12.35%. CONCLUSION Most women have antibodies to HSV-1, which is partially protective against HSV-2 infection. The seroprevalence of HSV-2 in our sample is relatively low, and similar to seroprevalence in developed European countries. However, there is a high risk of acquiring primary genital HSV infection during pregnancy. Our sample was small, therefore further investigations are required for valid evaluation of seroprevalence of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Serbia.

Abstract
Gliomas are the most frequent primary brain tumors in humans. Many studies have been carried out on their etiology; however, the only confirmed risk factors are hereditary predisposing conditions and high dose of ionizing radiation. Recently, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) gene products and nucleic acids were reported to be present in all of 27 glioma samples investigated in contrast to other brain tissues, and it was hypothesized that HCMV might play a role in glioma pathogenesis. To evaluate these findings, samples of 40 gliomas, 31 meningiomas, and 6 acoustic neurinomas (ACNs) were analyzed for the presence of HCMV macromolecules using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, corresponding blood samples from 72 patients were analyzed for the presence of HCMV DNA to check for a possible contamination of tumor tissues with HCMV-infected blood cells. No HCMV DNA sequences were found, neither in brain tumor tissues nor in corresponding blood samples. Immunohistochemistry did not detect HCMV-specific proteins. Addressing a possible role of other herpesviruses as has been suggested in seroepidemiological studies, seroprevalence of antibodies to HCMV, herpes simplex virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serological analyses of brain tumor patients showed no significant differences in the prevalences of antibodies to HCMV, HSV, EBV, or VZV compared to the general population. Thus, the data of the present study do not support the hypothesis of an association of herpesviruses with the development of primary brain tumors.

Abstract
The prevalence of antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) was determined in sera collected from 2 Swedish cross-sectional populations during 1990/91 and 1996/97. A glycoprotein G2 (gG-2) peptide ELISA was used to analyse 2899 sera from adults. We found a prevalence of 13.0% in 18-70-y-olds in 1990/91 and 16.4% in 31-55-y-olds in 1996/97. Seropositivity to HSV-2 was somewhat higher in women than in men; 14.4% compared to 11.6% in 1990/91 and 18.9% compared to 13.6% in 1996/97. Overall there was a significant difference in female prevalence of HSV-2 compared to prevalence in males of the same age groups (p=0.013). Total antibody prevalence to HSV-1 of 88% in HSV-2 negative individuals above 18 y of age was found. HSV-2 positive individuals were found seropositive to HSV-1 in approximately 95% of the cases. 12% were negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies. In addition, there was no serological sign that the reported increase of HSV-1 as an early sexual disease had reduced the frequency of HSV-2 seropositivity in the sexually most active age groups. In conclusion, our investigation has shown no significant increase of HSV-2 seroprevalence in randomly selected Swedish subjects during the defined time period.

Abstract
Detrimental effects of oral infections on general health have been known for almost 3000 years. Modern studies, however, have cast new light on the pathogenic mechanisms by which oral infections appear to link with morbidity and mortality. In particular, among the elderly, poor dental health seems to associate with all-cause mortality. This review aims to provide an overview of present knowledge of these issues, starting from dental bacteraemia, oral mucosal infections and problems of drug resistance and, briefly, discussing what is known about the link between oral health and some systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis and type-2 diabetes. The main conclusions are that scientific evidence is still weak on these interactions and that the elderly should be better taken into account when planning future studies. Functions of the body differ in the frail and diseased from those of the young. Consequently, novel prevention and treatment strategies should be developed and properly tested for combating oral infections in elderly populations. Specific suggestions for further research are outlined.
