Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the association between vaginal microbiota, carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) and histological findings of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). The study included 132 females, among them 66 were diagnosed with high-grade intraepithelial lesion (CIN2, CIN3, and cancer), 14 with low-grade disease, and 52 assigned to the control group. An interview focused on the behavior risk factors, together with vaginal fluid pH measurement, wet mount microscopy, detection of Chlamydia trachomatis, and Trichomonas vaginalis were performed. After colposcopy, high-grade abnormalities were detected via direct biopsies and treated with conization procedure. Conuses were immuno-stained with CAIX antibody. The histological findings were CIN1 (n = 14), and CIN2+ (included CIN2 (n = 10), CIN3 (n = 49), and cancer (n = 7; squamous cell carcinomas)). Prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (BV) was similar between the groups. Moderate or severe aerobic vaginitis (msAV) was diagnosed more often among CIN2+ (53.0%) than CIN1 (21.4%). Moderate or strong immunostaining of CAIX (msCAIX) was not detected among CIN1 cases. Thus, msAV was prevalent in CAIX non-stained group (p = 0.049) among CIN2 patients. Co-location of msAV and msCAIX was found in CIN3. Regression model revealed that msAV associated with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia independently from smoking and the number of partners.

Abstract
Cervical cancer (CC) is women's fourth most common cancer worldwide. A worrying increase in CC rates in Hispanics suggests that besides Human papillomavirus infections, there may be other cofactors included in the epithelial microenvironment that could play a role in promoting the disease. We hypothesized that the cervical microbiome and the epithelial microenvironment favoring inflammation is conducive to disease progression in a group of Hispanics attending gynecology clinics in Puerto Rico. Few studies have focused on the joint microbiota and cytokine profile response in Hispanics outside the US, especially regarding the development of precancerous lesions. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the cervicovaginal microbiome and inflammation in Hispanic women living in PR while considering cervical dysplasia and HPV genotype risk. Cervical samples collected from 91 participants coming to gynecology clinics in San Juan, underwent 16S rRNA genes (V4 region) profiling, and cytokines were measured using Luminex MAGPIX technology. Cytokines were grouped as inflammatory (IL-1β, TNFα, IFNγ, IL-6), anti-inflammatory (IL- 4, IL-10, TGFβ1), and traffic-associated (IL-8, MIP1a, MCP1, IP10). They were related to microbes via an inflammation scoring index based on the quartile and tercile distribution of the cytokine's concentration. We found significant differences in the diversity and composition of the microbiota according to HPV type according to carcinogenic risk, cervical disease, and cytokine abundance. Community State Types (CSTs) represents a profile of microbial communities observed within the vaginal microbiome ecological niche, and Lactobacillus-depleted CST IV had ~ 90% dominance in participants with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions and high-risk HPV. The increasing concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines was associated with a decrease in L. crispatus. In contrast, dysbiosis-associated bacteria such as Gardnerella, Prevotella, Atopobium concomitantly increased with pro-inflammatory cytokines. Our study highlights that the cervical microbiota of Hispanics living in Puerto Rico is composed mostly of diverse CST profiles with decreased Lactobacillus and is associated with a higher pro-inflammatory environment. The joint host-microbe interaction analyses via cytokine and microbiota profiling have very good translational potential.

Abstract
Objective A health disparity exists for African American (AA) women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who have increased prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and cervical neoplasia. We used a self-sampling brush to obtain cervical cells to assess cytology, HPV infection, and vaginal cytokine production in AA women with SLE. Methods Thirty AA women with SLE ages 18-50 years consented to participate. Clinical information was obtained by review of records and patient interviews, and surveys administered to assess cervical health history, knowledge of HPV, and satisfaction with the self-sampling brush. Vaginal samples were analyzed for cytology, HPV DNA and RNA, and vaginal cytokine RNA. Results Our cohort (mean 36.9, ±9.4 years) had moderate/severe SLE and were on immunosuppressives. The majority had history of abnormal pap smears (63%) with prevalent risk factors for HPV infection: multiple sex partners (9.5 ± 7), not vaccinated for HPV (83.3%), smoking (26.7%), and not using condoms (73.3%). Most were aware of HPV causing cervical cancer (70%) but were unaware of other HPV-related diseases. Most preferred self-sampling over traditional pap smear (80%). Abnormal cytology was detected in 13.3%. HPV DNA was detected in 70%, with half showing multiple types, and all showing active infection (+RNA). HPV-infected samples demonstrated RNA expression of multiple cytokines with no specific/ consistent pattern. Conclusion Our high-risk cohort lacked knowledge about HPV-related diseases and were not employing strategies to reduce their risk with vaccination and condoms. This study highlights the need for cervical health education, increased monitoring, and intervention in these high-risk women.

Abstract
Background: in recent years, many studies were carried out to explore the role of vaginal microbiota in HPV infections and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) progression. The aim of this study was to conduct a review of the literature to analyze the interaction between the vaginal microbiota, the CIN, and the immunological response. Methods: we performed a literature search, considering papers published between November 2015 and September 2021. Results: despite significant evidence suggesting a role of vaginal microbiota in the pathogenesis of HPV-related lesions, some studies still struggle to demonstrate this correlation. However, the vaginal microbiota of HPV-positive women shows an increased diversity, combined with a reduced relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp. and a higher pH. In cervical dysplasia progression, a strong association is found with new bacteria, and with the deregulation of pathways and hyperexpression of cytokines leading to chronic inflammation. Conclusions: in HPV progression, there is a strong correlation between potential biomarkers, such as Sneathia and Delftia found in community state types IV and II, and chronic inflammation with cytokine overexpression. Better analysis of these factors could be of use in the prevention of the progression of the disease and, eventually, in new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Cervical ectopy is a benign condition of the lower genital tract that is frequently detected in women of reproductive age. Although cervical ectopy is regarded as a physiological condition, some women experience symptoms such as leucorrhoea, persistent bleeding and recurrent vaginal infections that require medical intervention. Cervical ectopy has not been linked to cervical cancer, but it is thought to facilitate the acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), like Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, as it provides a favorable microenvironment for virus infection and dissemination. We and others have described the presence of oncogenic HPV types in women with symptomatic cervical ectopy. The relevance of this finding and the impact of symptomatic cervical ectopy on the cervicovaginal microenvironment (vaginal microbiota, immune and inflammatory responses) are currently unknown. To shed some light into the interplay between HPV, the vaginal microbiota and mucosal immune and inflammatory responses in the context of this condition, we enrolled 156 women with symptomatic cervical ectopy and determined the presence of HPV using a type-specific multiplex genotyping assay. Overall, HPV was detected in 54.48% women, oncogenic HPV types were found in more than 90% of HPV-positive cases. The most prevalent HPV types were HPV16 (29.4%), HPV31 (21.17%) and HPV18 (15.29%). Next, we evaluated the vaginal microbial composition and diversity by 16S rDNA sequencing, and quantified levels of cytokines and chemokines by flow cytometry using bead-based multiplex assays in a sub-cohort of 63 women. IL-21 and CXCL9 were significantly upregulated in HPV-positive women (p=0.0002 and p=0.013, respectively). Women with symptomatic cervical ectopy and HPV infection had increased diversity (p<0.001), and their vaginal microbiota was enriched in bacterial vaginosis-associated anaerobes (Sneathia, Shuttleworthia, Prevotella, and Atopobium) and depleted in Lactobacillus spp. Furthermore, the vaginal microbiota of women with symptomatic cervical ectopy and HPV infection correlated with vaginal inflammation (IL-1β, rho=0.56, p=0.0004) and increased mucosal homeostatic response (IL-22, rho=0.60, p=0.0001). Taken together, our results suggest that HPV infection and dysbiotic vaginal communities could favor a vaginal microenvironment that might delay the recovery of the cervical epithelium in women with symptomatic cervical ectopy and favor STDs acquisition.

Abstract
Wound healing requires static epithelial cells to gradually assume a mobile phenotype through a multi-step process termed epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Although it is inherently transient and reversible, EMT perdures and is abnormally activated when the epithelium is chronically exposed to pathogens: this event deeply alters the tissue and eventually contributes to the development of diseases. Among the many of them is uterine cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the most frequent malignancy of the female genital system. SCC, whose onset is associated with the persistent infection of the uterine cervix by high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs), often relapses and/or metastasizes, being resistant to conventional chemo- or radiotherapy. Given that these fearsome clinical features may stem, at least in part, from the exacerbated and long-lasting EMT occurring in the HPV-infected cervix; here we have reviewed published studies concerning the impact that HPV oncoproteins, cellular tumor suppressors, regulators of gene expression, inflammatory cytokines or growth factors, and the interactions among these effectors have on EMT induction and cervical carcinogenesis. It is predictable and desirable that a broader comprehension of the role that EMT inducers play in SCC pathogenesis will provide indications to flourish new strategies directed against this aggressive tumor.

Abstract
Neoplasia of the cervix represents one of the most common cancers in women. Clinical and molecular research has identified immunological impairment in squamous intraepithelial cervical lesions and cervical cancer patients. The in-situ expression of several cytokines by uterine epithelial cells and by infiltrating leukocytes occurs during the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer. Some of these cytokines can prevent and others can induce the progression of the neoplasm. The infiltrating leukocytes also produce cytokines and growth factors relate to angiogenesis, chemotaxis, and apoptosis capable of modulating the dysplasia progression. In this review we analyzed several interleukins with an inductive effect or blocking effect on the neoplastic progression. We also analyze the genetic polymorphism of some cytokines and their relationship with the risk of developing cervical neoplasia. In addition, we describe the leukocyte cells that infiltrate the cervical uterine tissue during the neoplasia and their effects on neoplasia progression.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyse the association between vaginal microbiota and the histological finding of CIN. From July 2016 until June 2017, we included 110 consecutive patients with abnormal cervical cytology results referred for colposcopy to Riga East Clinical University Hospital Outpatient department in the study group. 118 women without cervical pathology were chosen as controls. Certified colposcopists performed interviews, gynaecological examinations and colposcopies for all participants. Material from the upper vaginal fornix was taken for pH measurement and wet-mount microscopy. Cervical biopsy samples were taken from all subjects in the study group and in case of a visual suspicion for CIN in the control group. Cervical pathology was more often associated with smoking (34.6% vs. 11.0%, p < 0.0001), low education level (47.2% vs. 25.5%, p = 0.001), increased vaginal pH (48.2% vs. 25.4%, p < 0.0001), abnormal vaginal microbiota (50% vs. 31.4%, p = 0.004) and moderate to severe aerobic vaginitis (msAV) (13.6% vs. 5.9%, p = 0.049) compared to controls. The most important independent risk factors associated with CIN2+ were smoking (OR 3.04 (95% CI 1.37–6.76), p = 0.006) and msAV (OR 3.18 (95% CI 1.13–8.93), p = 0.028). Bacterial vaginosis (BV) was found more often in CIN1 patients (8/31, 25.8%, p = 0.009) compared with healthy controls (8/118, 6.8%), or CIN2+ cases (8/79, 10.1%). In the current study msAV and smoking were the most significant factors in the development of CIN in HPV-infected women, especially high grade CIN. We suggest that AV changes are probably more important than the presence of BV in the pathogenesis of CIN and progression to cervix cancer and should not be ignored during the evaluation of the vaginal microbiota.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types is associated with high-grade intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) and invasive cervical cancer. The host immune response plays a key role in whether HPV clears or persists. Most studies on local immune response to HPV collect cervical mucus in order to quantify secreted cytokines; however, cells located inside the tissue can release different cytokines associated with HPV infection. OBJECTIVE This study compared the cytokine levels in cervical biopsy specimens of women with abnormal colposcopic findings according to the histopathological results: low-grade intraepithelial lesion (LSIL), HSIL, and no intraepithelial lesion (NSIL). METHODS A cross-sectional study enrolling 141 cervical biopsy specimens examined the cytokine profile for interleukin (IL-) 2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, IL-17, and IL-23 and interferon-γ, using the Luminex assay/ELISA. Differences in cytokine levels among the cervical lesion groups were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS The 141 specimens included 90 HSILs, 22 LSILs, and 29 NSILs. IL-2 levels were significantly higher in NSIL samples than in LSIL or in HSIL samples (p = 0.0001) and IL-23 levels were significantly higher in NSIL than in HSIL samples (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Our study shows that in samples from the lesion site point, 2 important pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-2 and IL-23, are downregulated in HPV lesions.

Abstract
Cervical cancer develops as a result of T-cell immune evasion by human papillomavirus (HPV). T-cell immunity requires the participation of many factors, such as antigen-presenting cells (APCs), cytokines, co-stimulatory molecules, etc. HPV vaccines are promising treatments to prevent HPV infection and cervical cancer. This article mainly provides a summary of the number and function changes of T cells during HPV infection and cervical cancer development. Studies on t-cell immunotherapy, which is expected to become a new treatment for cervical cancer after surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, are also reviewed in this article.

Abstract
Identification of factors associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical histopathology or recurrence/relapse following loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) would allow for better management of the disease. We investigated whether gene signatures could (i) associate with HPV cervical histopathology and (ii) identify women with post-LEEP disease recurrence/relapse. Gene array analysis was performed on paraffin-embedded cervical tissue-isolated RNA from two cross-sectional cohorts of antiretroviral therapy (ART)-suppressed HIV+HPV+ coinfected women: (i) 55 women in South Africa recruited into three groups: high risk (HR) (-) (n = 16) and HR (+) (n = 15) HPV without cervical histopathology and HR (+) HPV with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1/2/3 (n = 24), (ii) 28 women in Botswana with CIN2/3 treated with LEEP 12-month prior to recruitment and presenting with (n = 13) and without (n = 15) lesion recurrence/relapse (tissue was analyzed at first LEEP). Three distinct gene expression signatures identified were able to segregate: (i) HR+ HPV and CIN1/2/3, (ii) HR HPV-free and cervical histopathology-free and (iii) HR+ HPV and cervical histopathology-free. Immune activation and neoplasia-associated genes (n = 272 genes; e.g. IL-1A, IL-8, TCAM1, POU4F1, MCM2, SMC1B, CXCL6, MMP12) were a feature of cancer precursor dysplasia within HR HPV infection. No difference in LEEP tissue gene expression was detected between women with or without recurrence/relapse. In conclusion, distinctive gene signatures were associated with presence of cervical histopathology in tissues from ART-suppressed HIV+/HPV+ coinfected women. Lack of detection of LEEP tissue gene signature able to segregate subsequent post-LEEP disease recurrence/relapse indicates additional factors independent of local gene expression as determinants of recurrence/relapse.

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to analyze the gene expression profile of the proinflammatory interleukins, (IL-1β and IL-18) in patients with premalignant lesions and cervical cancer. Methods: Total IL-1β and IL-18 mRNA was quantified by qPCR to obtain the expression data in cervical tissues. A total of 74 cervical biopsies were obtained from women undergoing a colposcopy. The samples were divided into: normal (19), low level lesions (LSIL) or NIC I (17), high level lesions (HSIL) or CIN II and CIN III (29) and cancer (9). The normal cervical tissue samples were included as controls. The OR and 95% CI were calculated for the determination of the risk of progression between each type of lesion and cancer using logistic regression. Results: The results showed that an increase in the risk of progression of pre-neoplastic lesions to cancer was between 2.5 and 2.08 times higher in women with lower IL-1β and IL-18 expression, respectively. Conclusions: This study provided evidence that IL-1β and IL-18 are potential biomarkers that can be explored in further studies for monitoring the evolution of pre-neoplastic lesions and avoiding overtreatment or undertreatment of the patients.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can persist in the cervical epithelium without provoking a strong host immune response, leading to the development of cervical cancer. Cytokines, which mediate innate and adaptive immune activities, are secreted in the cervical mucus; however, there is currently no appropriate method for assessing cytokine levels in mucus specimens. Here, we employed multiplexed bead-based immunoassays to examine cytokine levels in cervical mucus using both weighted-volume and total protein concentration methods to adjust for different specimen volumes in individual patients. Out of 18 cytokines initially examined in the primary cohort patient group (n = 28), 14 were detected in more than 10% of the samples. Of these 14 cytokines, expression levels of interferon (IFN)-γ, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), RANTES, and eotaxin were significantly increased with the disease severity in the secondary cohort patient group (n = 235). We also examined associations between cytokine levels and clinical parameters, such as cytology and HPV genotype. Of the 14 cytokines, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was downregulated in HPV-positive specimens. Examination of co-expression patterns of cytokines in relation to HPV infection status revealed that several pairs of cytokines were simultaneously upregulated in HPV-positive cases, including INF-γ and interleukin (IL)-17A, GM-CSF and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), GM-CSF and RANTES, IL-17A and RANTES, and MCP-1 and eotaxin. Interestingly, upregulation of GM-CSF and RANTES might reflect a shift in immuno-regulatory cytokines in HPV-positive specimens, potentially associated with more severe cervical neoplasia.

Abstract
Persistent infection by high-risk oncogenic human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions, and both the systemic and local immunological responses play an important role in eliminating or maintenance this infection. Th17 cells, as well as interleukin (IL)-17, are related to tumor growth and persistence of viral infection. Thus, this study aimed to quantify IL-17 in the serum and exfoliated cervical cells of HR-HPV-infected patients and healthy patients as well as identify CD4+IL17+ cells and IL-17 production in uterine cervix biopsies to better understand the behavior of this cytokine in HPV infections. IL-17 was quantified (pg/mL) in the serum and exfoliated cervical cells of 26 HR-HPV-infected patients, and in 18 healthy patients, using flow cytometry. Fifteen paraffin-embedded biopsy samples from the uterine cervix were subjected to immunohistochemistry to detect CD4+IL-17+ and IL-17+ cells. There was a significant increase in the concentration of IL-17 in HR-HPV-positive patients' serum when compared to that in samples of exfoliated cervical cells (p < 0.05). Likewise, when compared with that in healthy patients, the IL-17 concentration was still higher in HR-HPV-positive patients sera (p < 0.05). We did not find differences in the amount of CD4+IL-17+ cells and other IL-17-secreting cells between different histopathological lesions. Our results suggest that HR-HPV infection predominantly stimulates systemic IL-17 production along with less localized expression.

Abstract
Background The ability to distinguish which hrHPV infections predispose to significant disease is ever more pressing as a result of the increasing move to hrHPV testing for primary cervical screening. A risk-stratifier or “triage” of infection should ideally be objective and suitable for automation given the scale of screening. Results CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CXCL1, CXCL8 and CXCL12 emerged as the strongest, candidate biomarkers to detect underlying disease [cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+)]. For CIN2+, CCL2 had the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.722 with a specificity of 82%. A combined biomarker panel of six chemokines CCL2, CCL3, CCL4, CXCL1, CXCL8, and CXCL12 provides a sensitivity of 71% and specificity of 67%. Conclusion The present work demonstrates that the levels of five chemokine-proteins are indicative of underlying disease. We demonstrate technical feasibility and promising clinical performance of a chemokine-based biomarker panel, equivalent to that of other triage options. Further assessment in longitudinal series is now warranted. Methods A panel of 31 chemokines were investigated for expression in routinely taken archived and prospective cervical liquid based cytology (LBC) samples using Human Chemokine Proteomic Array kit. Nine chemokines were further validated using Procartaplex assay on the Luminex platform.

Abstract
Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Podophyllotoxin (POD), a cytotoxic compound, is able to effectively treat HPV; however, the severe irritation side effects of POD restrict its use as a treatment for CA. The aim of the present study was to construct novel POD‑loaded nanostructured nanolipid carriers (POD‑NLCs) and evaluate their physicochemical characteristics and cytotoxicity. POD‑NLCs (0.5%) were prepared using emulsion‑evaporation and low temperature‑solidification methods with optimized conditions and preparations. Subsequently, the POD‑NLCs were physicochemically characterized and their in vitro and in vivo release efficiencies and in vitro cytotoxicity were studied. The prepared POD‑NLCs had an average particle size, ζ potential, polydispersity index and encapsulation efficacy of 178.5±20 nm, ‑27±0.5 mV, 0.18±0.01 and 82.9±2%, respectively. In vitro and in vivo release studies demonstrated that POD‑NLCs are able to provide sustained drug delivery for 72 h in vitro and 10 h in the mucosa. Compared with a tincture formulation of POD (POD‑T), POD‑NLC induced less inflammatory cytokine production in the cervical mucous and led to a decreased histopathological score. In addition, a cytotoxicity assay demonstrated that inhibition of the POD‑NLCs was 98.4% at 24 h and remained >98% up to 72 h. Furthermore, more cells were arrested in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle following POD‑NLC treatment compared with the POD‑T treatment. The present study provides evidence that POD‑NLC is a promising delivery system for the treatment of CA.

Abstract
High-risk human papillomavirus oncoproteins E6 and E7 are the major etiological factors of cervical cancer but are insufficient for malignant transformation of cervical cancer. Dysregulated alternative splicing, mainly ascribed to aberrant splicing factor levels and activities, contributes to most cancer hallmarks. However, do E6 and E7 regulate the expression of splicing factors? Does alternative splicing acts as an “accomplice” of E6E7 to promote cervical cancer progression? Here, we identified that the splicing factor SRSF10, which promotes tumorigenesis of cervix, was upregulated by E6E7 via E2F1 transcriptional activation. SRSF10 modulates the alternate terminator of interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein exon 13 to increase production of the membrane form of interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein. SRSF10-mediated mIL1RAP upregulates the expression of the “don’t eat me” signal CD47 to inhibit macrophage phagocytosis by promoting nuclear factor-κB activation, which is pivotal in inflammatory, immune, and tumorigenesis processes. Altogether, these data reveal a close relationship among HPV infection, alternative splicing and tumor immune evasion, and also suggests that the SRSF10-mIL1RAP-CD47 axis could be an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of cervical cancer.

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of the vaginal milieu on the presence of abnormal Pap smears and a positive human papilloma virus (HPV) test. A cross-sectional study was conducted between June 2014 and May 2015, evaluating the vaginal discharge by fresh wet mount microscopy and comparing these data with Pap smear findings. Wet mount slides were scored for bacterial vaginosis (BV), aerobic vaginitis (AV), presence of Candida and Trichomonas vaginalis. Cytologic evaluation was done on all Pap smears according to the Bethesda criteria. The cobas© HPV Test (Roche) was performed for HPV detection. A total of 622 cases were evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 41.6 ± 10.65 years (range 21-75). Eighty-three women (13.3 %) had a cytology result worse than low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL). When comparing this group with the one with normal or minor [atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) or LSIL] Pap smear abnormalities, there were no differences in the presence of Candida (32.5 % vs. 33.2 %, p = 1.0), absence of lactobacilli (38.6 % vs. 32.5 %, p = 0.32) or BV (20.5 % vs. 13.2 %, p = 0.09). On the other hand, moderate or severe inflammation (msI) (41.0 % vs. 28.8 %, p = 0,04), moderate or severe AV (msAV) (16.9 % vs. 7.2 %, p = 0.009) and msAV/BV (37.3 % vs. 20.0 %, p = 0.001) were more common in women with such major cervical abnormalities. No significant association was found between deviations of the vaginal milieu and high-risk HPV infection. The presence of msI or msAV, but not BV, is independently associated with an increased risk of major cervical cytological abnormalities, but not with HPV infection.

Abstract
Background Angiostrongylus cantonensis (A. cantonensis) infection can result in increased risk of eosinophilic meningitis. Accumulation of eosinophils and inflammation can result in the A. cantonensis infection playing an important role in brain tissue injury during this pathological process. However, underlying mechanisms regarding the transcriptomic responses during brain tissue injury caused by A. cantonensis infection are yet to be elucidated. This study is aimed at identifying some genomic and transcriptomic factors influencing the accumulation of eosinophils and inflammation in the mouse brain infected with A. cantonensis. Methods An infected mouse model was prepared based on our laboratory experimental process, and then the mouse brain RNA Libraries were constructed for deep Sequencing with Illumina Genome Analyzer. The raw data was processed with a bioinformatics’ pipeline including Refseq genes expression analysis using cufflinks, annotation and classification of RNAs, lncRNA prediction as well as analysis of co-expression network. The analysis of Refseq data provides the measure of the presence and prevalence of transcripts from known and previously unknown genes. Results This study showed that Cys-Cys (CC) type chemokines such as CCL2, CCL8, CCL1, CCL24, CCL11, CCL7, CCL12 and CCL5 were elevated significantly at the late phase of infection. The up-regulation of CCL2 indicated that the worm of A. cantonensis had migrated into the mouse brain at an early infection phase. CCL2 could be induced in the brain injury during migration and CCL2 might play a major role in the neuropathic pain caused by A. cantonensis infection. The up-regulated expression of IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-13 showed Th2 cell predominance in immunopathological reactions at late infection phase in response to infection by A. cantonensis. These different cytokines can modulate and inhibit each other and function as a network with the specific potential to drive brain eosinophilic inflammation. The increase of ATF-3 expression at 21 dpi suggested the injury of neuronal cells at late phase of infection. 1217 new potential lncRNA were candidates of interest for further research. Conclusions These cytokine networks play an important role in the development of central nervous system inflammation caused by A. cantonensis infection.
