Preparation, characterization and catalytic activity towards green reactions of sulfonic functionalized SBA-15

Amine- and thiol-bifunctionalized mesoporous silica material for immobilization of Pb and Cd: Characterization, efficiency, and mechanism

In this study, a two-step functionalizing strategy by combining co-condensation with grafting procedures was employed to synthesize well-ordered Amino- and Thiol-Bifunctionalized SBA-15 (ATBS) mesoporous silica. Its physicochemical properties, performance, and mechanisms in immobilization of toxic metals Pb and Cd in water and soil were investigated. After bi-functionalization, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, and N₂ adsorption-desorption measurements confirmed that the ATBS maintained a highly-ordered mesoporous structure, large surface area and pore volume. The elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) evidenced the successful incorporation of amine and thiol groups into ATBS. These structure and functional characteristics of ATBS benefited Pb and Cd sorption. Sorption isotherms of Pb and Cd were better fit with Sips and Redlich-Peterson models. Sorption kinetics suggested that Pb sorption was mainly regulated by chemical reactions, whereas both diffusion process and chemical reactions were rate-regulating steps in Cd sorption. ATBS showed the maximum sorption capacities for Pb and Cd at 120 and 38 mg g^-1, respectively. The sorption mechanisms revealed by XPS measurements suggested that Cd sorption was mainly attributed to thiol groups while Pb was efficiently bond to both thiol and amino groups. High and stable sorption efficiencies were attained in the pH range of 4-6, with a higher affinity towards Pb than Cd. Furthermore, its ability to immobilize Pb and Cd in soils was examined with an incubation experiment, which showed that ATBS reduced 30-56% of MgCl₂-extractable Pb and Cd in a contaminated soil. The synthesized sorbent via the two-step functionalizing strategy shows high sorption efficiency towards Pb and Cd, and thus it has potential application in remediating Pb and Cd contaminated water and soils.

Comparative study of photocatalytic activities of hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorod on Si(001) wafer and FTO glass substrates

ZnO nanorods have been grown on Si(001) wafer and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates for 1 and 4 h with the hydrothermal methods. The morphologies and photocatalytic activities of the ZnO nanorods were found to depend on the substrates. We investigated their properties by using spectroscopic analysis and demonstrated that the shape of nanorod and the ratios of external defects can be controlled by varying the substrates. Our experiments revealed that the nanorods grown on Si(001) have a single-crystalline wurtzite structure with (002) facets and that the number of surface oxygen defects increases with their length as the growth time increases. The nanorods grown on Si(001) have different facets, in particular wider (002) facets, and a higher ratio of the oxygen defect than the nanorods on FTO glass substrate. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities with respect to 2-aminothiophenol (2-ATP) of these nanorods were investigated with high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We demonstrated that their photocatalytic activity is influenced by the ratios of surface oxygen defects, which varies with the substrate surface.

Cadmium(II) adsorption using functional mesoporous silica and activated carbon

The role of surface functionality on silica and carbonaceous materials for adsorption of cadmium(II) was examined using various mesoporous silica and activated carbon. Silica surfaces were principally functionalized by mono-amino- and mercapto-groups, while carboxylic group was introduced to the activated carbons by oxidation. Functional groups on silica surface were formed using grafting and co-condensation techniques in their preparation. Mono-amino group was found more effective than di- and tri-amino groups for cadmium(II) adsorption on the grafted silica. Mono-amino groups prepared by co-condensation adsorbed cadmium(II) as much as 0.25mmol/g compared to mercapto- and carboxyl-groups which adsorbed around 0.12mmol/g, whereas Langmuir adsorption affinities were as strong as 50-60L/mmol for all of the three functions. The working pH range was wider for mercapto- and carboxyl-functions than for amino-group. Basic site could be an adsorption center for amino-functional groups while ion exchange sites were found to work for the mercapto- and carboxyl-functions to adsorb cadmium(II) from aqueous phase. Based on the experimental results, surface functional groups rather than structure of silica and carbon seemed to play a decisive role for cadmium(II) adsorption.
