A fully consistent experimental and molecular simulation study of methane adsorption on activated carbon

Microscopic Characterization of Deformation Behavior during Kerogen Evolution: Effects of Maturity and Skeleton Moisture Content

The CH4 storage and seepage capacity of shale kerogen are the main controlling factors of the natural gas production rate, and the porosity and permeability of kerogen are greatly affected by kerogen deformation. Therefore, the study of the deformation rule and CH4 adsorption characteristics of kerogen at different maturities and skeleton moisture contents has an important impact on the proper understanding of the development potential of shale gas reservoirs. In this paper, kerogen maturity (II-A, II-B, II-C, and II-D) and skeleton moisture content (0.0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, and 2.4 wt %) were considered. The deformation of kerogen, the adsorption of CH4 after deformation, and the quadratic deformation induced by CH4 were studied by using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD). The results show that the kerogen volume strain increases with increasing skeleton moisture content, following the order II-A < II-B < II-C < II-D for the same moisture content. The density of the kerogen matrix decreases, and porosity increases with rising moisture content. The void fraction of immature kerogen decreases with increasing water content, while the opposite is true for postmature kerogen. The presence of skeleton moisture decreases the CH4 adsorption capacity of immature kerogen and increases the CH4 adsorption capacity of postmature kerogen. The chemical structure of immature kerogen is relatively soft, making its volume more affected by CH4 adsorption compared with postmature kerogen. In the same water environment, postmature kerogen has greater CH4 storage, diffusion, and seepage capacity compared to those of immature kerogen, suggesting that reservoirs with high organic matter maturity should be prioritized for development.

Study on Adsorption Characteristics of Deep Coking Coal Based on Molecular Simulation and Experiments

To study the effect of high temperature and high pressure on the adsorption characteristics of coking coal, Liulin coking coal and Pingdingshan coking coal were selected as the research objects, and isotherm adsorption curves at different temperatures and pressures were obtained by combining isotherm adsorption experiments and molecular dynamics methods. The effect of high temperature and high pressure on the adsorption characteristics of coking coal was analyzed, and an isothermal adsorption model suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure conditions was studied. The results show that the adsorption characteristics of deep coking coal can be well characterized by the molecular dynamics method. Under a supercritical condition, the excess adsorption capacity of methane decreases with the increase of temperature. With the increase of pressure, the excess adsorption capacity rapidly increases in the early stage, temporarily stabilizes in the middle stage, and decreases in the later stage. Based on the classical adsorption model, the adsorption capacity of coking coal under high-temperature and high-pressure environments is fitted. The fitting degree ranges from good to poor. The order is D-R > D-A > L-F >BET > Langmuir, and combined with temperature gradient, pressure gradient, and the D-R adsorption model, it can be seen that after 800 m deep in Liulin Mine and 400 m deep in Pingdingshan Mine, the adsorption capacity of coking coal to methane decreases with the increase of depth.

Exploring the Potential of Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Separation of Blends of Fluorinated Gases with High Global Warming Potential

The research on porous materials for the selective capture of fluorinated gases (F-gases) is key to reduce their emissions. Here, the adsorption of difluoromethane (R-32), pentafluoroethane (R-125), and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) is studied in four metal-organic frameworks (MOFs: Cu-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, MOF-177, and MIL-53(Al)) and in one zeolite (ZSM-5) with the aim to develop technologies for the efficient capture and separation of high global warming potential blends containing these gases. Single-component sorption equilibria of the pure gases are measured at three temperatures (283.15, 303.15, and 323.15 K) by gravimetry and correlated using the Tóth and Virial adsorption models, and selectivities toward R-410A and R-407F are determined by ideal adsorption solution theory. While at lower pressures, R-125 and R-134a are preferentially adsorbed in all materials, at higher pressures there is no selectivity, or it is shifted toward the adsorption R-32. Furthermore, at high pressures, MOF-177 shows the highest adsorption capacity for the three F-gases. The results presented here show that the utilization of MOFs, as tailored made materials, is promising for the development of new approaches for the selective capture of F-gases and for the separation of blends of these gases, which are used in commercial refrigeration.

Molecular model construction of Danhou lignite and study on adsorption of CH4 by oxygen functional groups

In view of the frequent occurrence of gas accidents in coal mines, the mechanism of oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs) in Danhou lignite adsorbing gas was studied by experiment and simulation. Elemental analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-NMR), and adsorption experiment of CH4 were applied to establish the macromolecular model of Danhou lignite. Then, molecular mechanics (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) were utilized to optimize the coal macromolecular model, and the density of coal was determined via adding periodic boundary conditions. The mechanism of gas adsorption by OCFGs was studied by grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that the aromatic structures mostly exist in the form of pyrenes; the structure of aliphatic carbons are mostly methylene and methine groups; the alkanes are mostly long chains; oxygen atoms are mainly in the form of hydroxyl groups and ether groups; nitrogen atoms are mainly in the form of pyridines; and the density of Danhou lignite is 1.25 g/cm3. The isotherm adsorption curve and Langmuir adsorption curve have a good fit, a single coal molecule reaches saturation after absorbing four CH4 molecules, and the error between experiment and simulation is small. The results of DFT calculation showed that the adsorption of CH4 by OCFGs is affected by the adsorption positions and adsorption directions. Due to CH4 molecules are affected by different electrostatic forces, the adsorption capacities of OCFGs are different, and the order is carbonyl groups > ether bonds > hydroxyl groups > carboxyl groups. The results can be used for reference in the prevention and control of coal and gas outburst.

Effect of Kerogen Maturity, Water Content for Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Their Mixture Adsorption and Diffusion in Kerogen: A Computational Investigation

The adsorption behavior of CO₂, CH₄, and CO₂/CH₄ mixtures in four different mature kerogens in the absence/presence of water was studied using grand canonical Monte Carlo and classical molecular dynamics methods. The results exhibit that the adsorption isotherms of single-component CO₂ or CH₄ in kerogen present similar trends and show type I Langmuir adsorption behavior according to the IUPAC classification; the total adsorbed amount of both gases follows the order of type II-A < type II-B < type II-C < type II-D kerogen under the same conditions. The changing behavior of isosteric heat decreases first and then increases, which can explain the heterogeneous characteristic of the kerogen pore surface. The Coulombic and van der Waals interactions between CO₂ and kerogens play an important role on adsorption, while for CH₄ adsorption, the electrostatic effect is very small, even negligible. The N-, S-, and O-containing groups in kerogen have more remarkable influence on adsorption of CO₂ than CH₄ because of their strong adsorption energy, therefore notably improving the selectivity of CO₂ over CH₄ and following the order of type II-A > type II-B > type II-C > type II-D, which is beneficial to carbon capture and storage. Both pressure and temperature have an obvious impact on gas molecule diffusion, and low pressure and high temperature correspond to a large diffusion coefficient. In addition, preabsorbed water has a negative effect on the adsorption of CO₂/CH₄, and for the same amount of water molecules, the effect follows the order of type II-A > type II-B > type II-C > type II-D kerogens. The binding energy of water-kerogen is stronger than that of pure CH₄ or CO₂-kerogen. The selectivity of CO₂ over CH₄ on kerogen increases with an increasing water content.

A novel experimental setup for simultaneous adsorption and induced deformation measurements in microporous materials

A new experimental setup is presented allowing the simultaneous measurement of adsorption isotherms and adsorption-induced deformations. It is composed of a manometric technique coupled with a digital image correlation setup for full-field displacement measurements. The manometric part is validated by comparing adsorption isotherms with those obtained by a gravimetric method. The principles and methods of both adsorption isotherm and induced deformation measurements are presented in detail. As a first application of this new apparatus, the coupling between adsorption and induced deformation is characterised for a microporous media (activated carbon) saturated by pure CO₂ (318.15 K, [0-60] bars) and pure CH₄ (303.15 K, [0-130] bars). For this very homogeneous porous material, the induced deformation is characteristic of a pure volumetric swelling but the full-field setup may allow the characterisation of the localised pattern of deformation for heterogenous or cracked microporous media.
