Availability and interconnectivity of pores in mesostructured ZSM-5 zeolites by the adsorption and diffusion of mesitylene

Study on the characteristics of zeolite-promoted thermal decomposition of H2O2 for efficient NO oxidation

The H₂O₂ evaporation rate directly affected the oxidation of NO by H₂O₂. Green zeolite and synthetic mordenite were selected to promote H₂O₂ thermal decomposition and NO oxidation. The effects of different zeolites, evaporation conditions, temperatures, and reactant concentrations on the NO oxidation ratio were explored. The promotion mechanism of zeolite on NO oxidation by H₂O₂ thermal decomposition was explained. The results show that the zeolite surface can significantly accelerate the H₂O₂ evaporation rate to obtain a high NO oxidation ratio. The hydrophilicity and rich pore structure of zeolite enable the rapid diffusion and evaporation of droplets on the zeolite surface. Compared with the green zeolite with the mesoporous structure, the synthetic mordenite with the hierarchical pore structure has a more obvious promotion effect on the NO oxidation by H₂O₂ thermal decomposition. The reason is that the synthetic mordenite contains micropores, resulting in a larger specific surface area, and the mesoporous structure is conducive to the mass transfer and diffusion of H₂O₂ on its surface. The product of NO oxidation is mainly NO₂, which proves that ·OH plays a major role in the process.

The zero length column technique to measure adsorption equilibrium and kinetics: lessons learnt from 30 years of experience

The zero length column technique has been developed over the past 30 years as a versatile experimental method to measure adsorption equilibrium and kinetics. In this review we discuss in detail the theory that forms the basis for the technique in order to understand how to design and operate efficiently a system. Experimental checks that should be performed to ensure the correct interpretation of the dynamic response are presented and examples are used to identify how to avoid major errors in determining diffusion time constants. The review concludes with an overview of all experimental studies available in the literature to date and a set of recommendations that should help improve the standard in the reported equilibrium and kinetic properties.

Probing the pore structure of hierarchical EU-1 zeolites by adsorption of large molecules and through catalytic reaction

The adsorption of toluene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene and the catalytic transformation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene are applied as probing approaches to characterize the pore system of hierarchical EU-1 zeolites prepared using organofunctionalized fumed silica as the silicon source. The adsorption and diffusion of toluene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene are significantly improved in the hierarchical EU-1 zeolites compared with the conventional microporous EU-1 zeolite. The adsorption kinetics of toluene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene suggested that introducing mesopores significantly increases the rate of adsorption and improved the diffusion of large molecules. In the catalytic transformation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, the conversion of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene on the hierarchical EU-1 zeolites is doubled compared with the conventional microporous EU-1 zeolite, due to the improved diffusion of bulky molecules and enhanced accessibility of active sites in the hierarchical EU-1 structure. Although isomerization is the main reaction, differences are observed in the product ratios of isomerization to disproportionation between the hierarchical EU-1 zeolites and the microporous counterpart with different times on stream. The transformation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene over the hierarchical EU-1 zeolites has a higher isomerization to disproportionation ratio than that over the microporous EU-1 zeolite; this is due to the increased mesoporosity.

Visualizing pore architecture and molecular transport boundaries in catalyst bodies with fluorescent nanoprobes

The performances of porous materials are closely related to the accessibility and interconnectivity of their porous domains. Visualizing pore architecture and its role on functionality-for example, mass transport-has been a challenge so far, and traditional bulk and often non-visual pore measurements have to suffice in most cases. Here, we present an integrated, facile fluorescence microscopy approach to visualize the pore accessibility and interconnectivity of industrial-grade catalyst bodies, and link it unequivocally with their catalytic performance. Fluorescent nanoprobes of various sizes were imaged and correlated with the molecular transport of fluorescent molecules formed during a separate catalytic reaction. A direct visual relationship between the pore architecture-which depends on the pore sizes and interconnectivity of the material selected-and molecular transport was established. This approach can be applied to other porous materials, and the insight gained may prove useful in the design of more efficient heterogeneous catalysts.
