CeO2 nanoparticles improve prooxidant/antioxidant balance, life quality and survival of old male rats

Enhancing Infected Diabetic Wound Healing through Multifunctional Nanocomposite-Loaded Microneedle Patch: Inducing Multiple Regenerative Sites

Infected diabetic wound (DW) presents a prolonged and challenging healing process within the field of regenerative medicine. The effectiveness of conventional drug therapies is hindered by their limited ability to reach deep tissues and promote adequate wound healing rates. Therefore, there is an imperative to develop drug delivery systems that can penetrate deep tissues while exhibiting multifunctional properties to expedite wound healing. In this study, w e devised a soluble microneedle (MN) patch made of γ-PGA, featuring multiple arrays, which w as loaded with core-shell structured nanoparticles (NPs) known as Ag@MSN@CeO2, to enhance the healing of infected DWs. The NP comprises a cerium dioxide (CeO2) core with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, a mesoporous silica NP (MSN) shell with angiogenic characteristics, and an outermost layer doped with Ag to combat bacterial infections. W e demonstrated that the MN platform loaded with Ag@MSN@CeO2 successfully penetrated deep tissues for effective drug delivery. These MN tips induced the formation of multiple regenerative sites at various points, leading to antibacterial, reactive oxygen species-lowering, macrophage ecological niche-regulating, vascular regeneration-promoting, and collagen deposition-promoting effects, thus significantly expediting the healing process of infected DWs. Considering these findings, the multifunctional MN@Ag@MSN@CeO2 patch exhibits substantial potential for clinical applications in the treatment of infected DW.

Geniposide and Harpagoside Functionalized Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles as a Potential Neuroprotective

Alzheimer's disease is associated with protein aggregation, oxidative stress, and the role of acetylcholinesterase in the pathology of the disease. Previous investigations have demonstrated that geniposide and harpagoside protect the brain neurons, and cerium nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) have potent redox and antioxidant properties. Thus, the effect of nanoparticles of Ce NPs and geniposide and harpagoside (GH/CeO2 NPs) on ameliorating AD pathogenesis was established on AlCl3-induced AD in mice and an aggregation proteins test in vitro. Findings of spectroscopy analysis have revealed that GH/CeO2 NPs are highly stable, nano-size, spherical in shape, amorphous nature, and a total encapsulation of GH in cerium. Treatments with CeO2 NPs, GH/CeO2 NPs, and donepezil used as positive control inhibit fibril formation and protein aggregation, protect structural modifications in the BSA-ribose system, have the ability to counteract Tau protein aggregation and amyloid-β1-42 aggregation under fibrillation condition, and are able to inhibit AChE and BuChE. While the GH/CeO2 NPs, treatment in AD induced by AlCl3 inhibited amyloid-β1-42, substantially enhanced the memory, the cognition coordination of movement in part AD pathogenesis may be alleviated through reducing amyloidogenic pathway and AChE and BuChE activities. The findings of this work provide important comprehension of the chemoprotective activities of iridoids combined with nanoparticles. This could be useful in the development of new therapeutic methods for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Tailoring the Structural and Optical Properties of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Prepared by an Ecofriendly Green Route Using Plant Extracts

The present study explores an environmentally friendly green approach to obtain cerium oxide nanoparticles via a biomediated route using Mellisa officinalis and Hypericum perforatum plant extracts as reducing agents. The as-prepared nanoparticles were studied for their structural and morphological characteristics using XRD diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, fluorescence and electronic absorption spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD pattern has shown the centered fluorite crystal structure of cerium oxide nanoparticles with average crystallite size below 10 nm. These observations were in agreement with the STEM data. The cubic fluorite structure of the cerium oxide nanoparticles was confirmed by the vibrational mode around 462 cm-1 due to the Ce-08 unit. The optical band gap was estimated from UV-Vis reflectance spectra, which was found to decrease from 3.24 eV to 2.98 eV. A higher specific area was determined for the sample using M. officinalis aqueous extract. The EDX data indicated that only cerium and oxygen are present in the green synthesized nanoparticles.

Neurological study on the effect of CeNPs and/or La Cl3 on adult male albino rats

Lanthanides are a group of 15 elements (8 heavy and 7 light) grouped for their proximity in the chemical and physical properties. Recently, this group of elements has received great attention because of their importance, and their entrance into many industrial technologies making the probability of the living organisms' exposure to it increase. The present study aims to study ability of cerium nanoparticles (CeNPs) or lanthanum (LaCl3) to cross the blood brain barrier also, investigate their neuro effect separately or together on some parameters in six brain areas (cortex, cerebellum, hippocampus, striatum, midbrain, and hypothalamus) of the adult male albino rats. The results showed the ability of both elements to distribute and accumulate in the different brain areas. Also, the results of CeNPs or LaCl3 treatment were in the same line where each element caused a significant decrease in norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT) and GABA accompanied with a significant increase in 5- hydroxyl indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) glucose level. On the other hand, GSH and MDA showed a significant decrease after CeNPs treatment while, with LaCl3 treatment, MDA showed a significant increase in the different brain areas after 3 weeks of treatment. The coadministration of CeNPs and La Cl3 caused an ameliorating effect in all the tested parameters. In conclusion, from the previous studies the effects of lanthanides in the present study may be in part due to its effect on the release or turnover of neurotransmitters and insulin secretion. Finally, the ameliorative effect of CeNPs may be regarded as its high activity to scavenge the free radicals.
