Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a new proxy of the Eye Bank (EB) activity named "Eye Bank Efficiency Index" (EBEI), calculated as the ratio between the number of corneal tissues distributed by an EB within a certain time period, and the difference between the number of procured and discarded tissues. METHODS To demonstrate the effectiveness of the new metric as compared to traditional statistics, an analysis was conducted using data from the largest Italian Eye Bank (Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto Venice, Italy). Collected data included: the number of corneas retrieved, the number of discarded grafts, and the number of distributed tissues. The analysis focused on three defined timeframes: January to December, March to May (the "Italian Lockdown period"), and June to December (the "Italian post-lockdown period"). RESULTS In 2020, the annual variation of the EBEI showed a significant increase of up to 3.4% compared to the previous year (0.986 in 2019; 1.020 in 2020), but then gradually decreased to 0.993 in 2022. However, during the months of lockdown in 2020, there was a significant decline of -13.8% in the EBEI compared to the same period in the previous year. The variation in the EBEI during the post-lockdown months was minimal in 2020 and 2021, with the lowest EBEI value of 0.976 being reached in 2022 (-7.8% compared to 2019). CONCLUSION The EBEI is a simple and reliable new measure of the EB activity. Its widespread adoption could ensure a more accurate and reliable analysis of EB data for academic, political, and economic purposes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate corneal donation demographics in New Zealand (NZ) and explore changes over time. METHODS Data were collected from all donated corneas processed by the New Zealand National Eye Bank over a 10-year period from January 2013 until December 2022. Demographic data including age, self-identified ethnicity, and gender were collected, along with location and cause of death. National death data for the corresponding period were collected online from Statistics New Zealand. RESULTS A total of 1842 donors were processed; 1414 (76.8%) were sourced from Aotearoa-New Zealand and the remainder from Australia/United States. There was a small but statistically significant median age difference between NZ donors (68 years, interquartile range 55-76) and overseas donors [66 years (interquartile range) 51-70]. Most (n = 1151 81.4%) of NZ donors died in hospital settings, with the most common cause of death being cerebrovascular (n = 444 31.4%). Individuals were less likely to donate their cornea if they were female, [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 0.746, P < 0.001] older age (IRR 0.968, P < 0.001), or if they were of Māori (IRR 0.178, P < 0.001) or Pasifika ethnicity (IRR 0.125, P < 0.001). There was also a statistically significant decrease in donation rates over time (IRR 0.945, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS There remains a profound gap between the demand for corneal transplantation and corneal tissue donation, which is worsening with time. Donor age, gender, and ethnicity seem to influence corneal donation rates. These demographic differences may be ameliorated by increased education, cultural safety, further research into those willing to donate, and the establishment of an organ/tissue donation registry.

Abstract
Background Corneal diseases are the fourth most common cause of blindness worldwide. In the majority of these diseases, vision reduction is reversible and can be restored to a large extent by replacing the cornea through specific surgery and, in particular, transplantation. In Greece, due to a lack of organized eye banks as well as donors, the grafts intended for corneal transplantation usually come from eye banks abroad. This study focuses on the dynamics of cost versus value in the decision-making process for the procurement of corneal grafts, ultimately investigating the safety that the procured grafts provide to patients. Methodology A total of 267 patients with severe vision problems who underwent 301 corneal and amniotic membrane transplants from years 2020 to 2023 at the Transplant Unit of the Athens General Hospital "Georgios Gennimatas" were included in this study. All patients who were deemed appropriate to undergo corneal transplant operations, the diagnosis that led to the specific surgery, and other relevant data were recorded and evaluated. Results There was no significant difference in the ratio between males and females (51.3% male and 48.7% female). The mean age of the patients was 66.5 years (SD = 13.7 years). Graft problems were faced by 13.9% of the patients, with the amniotic membrane by 1.5% (in the total number of surgical operations) and both eyes by 4.5% of patients. The majority of the patients had undergone only one surgery (88.8%). Reoperation was needed in 14% of the cases, and 7.6% of the cases were surgeries that occurred due to graft rejection or non-functioning grafts from surgeries performed at another hospital or clinic. In the majority of surgeries (60.8%), a Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty graft was used. The mean cost was 3,167 euro (SD = 960.3 euro). Furthermore, in 35.8% of the surgeries, the graft was preserved with amphotericin. Conclusions The present study draws useful conclusions about the effectiveness of surgical interventions through the correlation of cost and safety of the grafts that are approved and finally used in corneal transplants, as well as the submission of proposals to improve the procedures and lead to patient benefits.

Abstract
We described the proportion of adherence to the scheduled visual field (VF) examination and the associated factors in glaucoma patients in a tertiary referral center during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in Taiwan. Patients with scheduled VF examinations during May 25th to July 12th, 2021, were retrospectively evaluated. Clinical characteristics including type of glaucoma, intraocular pressure (IOP) at the day of arranging VF examinations, prescriptions of anti-glaucoma medications, non-medical glaucoma treatment, length of glaucoma history, mean deviation (MD) of VF defect, and announcement of glaucoma progression were recorded. The associations between the adherence and the clinical factors were analyzed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression. There were 204 patients included, of which 37 patients (18.14%) adhered to VF examinations. A total of 161 patients (78.9%) were diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma (OAG), 27 patients (13.2%) with angle closure glaucoma, and 16 patients (7.8%) with glaucoma suspect. Most of the participants (41.2%) had mild VF defect and had been prescribed with no more than 1 bottle of anti-glaucoma medication. In the multivariate analysis, diagnosis of glaucoma suspect (P = .02) and history of SLT (P = .04) were significantly associated with better adherence. Glaucoma severity and the announcement of glaucoma progression were not significantly associated with adherence to VF examination. The COVID-19 pandemic had greatly influenced the adherence to VF examination in glaucoma patients. This study demonstrated that patients with the diagnosis of glaucoma suspect and history of SLT were more likely to adhere to VF examinations even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Introduction The purpose of this review is to consolidate and examine the available literature on the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and its effect on corneal transplantation and eye banking. Methods A primary literature search was conducted using the PubMed (Medline) database with keywords and MeSH terms such as "corneal transplantation," "eye banks," "keratoplasty" and then were combined with COVID-19. Relevant articles through September 2022 were assessed and 25 articles were included in this review. Results Donor tissue volumes declined globally during lockdown periods due to a lower number of referrals and tighter tissue screening guidelines. Rates of elective surgeries decreased in the lockdown period compared to respective periods in previous years. However, changes in rates of emergency procedures were not uniform across different regions. Moreover, rates of different elective corneal grafts [i.e., penetrating keratoplasty (PK), endothelial keratoplasty (EK), or anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK)] were affected differently with the pattern of change being dependent on region-specific factors. Conclusion Both donor tissue volumes and rates of corneal transplant procedures were affected by lockdown restrictions. The underlying etiology of these changes differed by region. Examining the range of impact across many countries as well as the contributing factors involved will provide guidance for future global pandemics.

Abstract
The cornea is a transparent avascular structure located in the front of the eye that refracts light entering the eyes and also serves as a barrier between the outside world and the internal contents of the eye. Like every other body part, the cornea may suffer insult from trauma, infection, and inflammation. In the case of trauma, a prior infection that left a scar, or conditions such as keratoconus that warrant the removal of all or part of the cornea (keratoplasty), it is important to use healthy donor corneal tissues and cells that can replace the damaged cornea. The types of cornea transplant techniques employed currently include: penetrating keratoplasty, endothelial keratoplasty (EK), and artificial cornea transplant. Postoperative failure acutely or after years can result after a cornea transplant and may require a repeat transplant. This minireview briefly examines the various types of corneal transplant methodologies, indications, contraindications, presurgical protocols, sources of cornea transplant material, wound healing after surgery complications, co-morbidities, and the effect of COVID-19 in corneal transplant surgery.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic exerted a great impact on medical practice, which was reframed according to the actual needs. Ophthalmological services and procedures including corneal transplantation did not represent an exception. The adoption and implementation of new standard operating procedures as well as of new technologies for remote consultation and smart-working reshaped daily activities of both eye bankers, physicians, researchers, and patients. Regulatory restrictions were issued redefining corneal donor eligibility criteria, as well as handling and harvesting procedures of donor ocular tissues. Surgical schedules underwent an abrupt contraction with prioritization of urgent procedures. Local lockdowns and confinement strategies resulted in both a reduction and redirection of research activities. The evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 colonization of ocular tissues, long-term corneal storage techniques, new disinfection strategies, split corneal transplants and cell-based therapies for the treatment of corneal disease peaked in the pipeline. Aim of this article is to summarizes the overall impact of the pandemic on the corneal transplantation machinery, and the current and future perspectives for the corneal transplant community.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to report the outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) using corneas from elderly donors aged 80 years and older. METHODS Eighty eyes of 78 patients who underwent DMEK-only or DMEK combined with cataract extraction (triple-DMEK) with surgeon-prepared graft between April 2016 and March 2020 were reviewed. Corrected distance visual acuity, endothelial cell density (ECD), and endothelial cell loss after 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years were analyzed. RESULTS The mean donor age was 83.6 ± 3.7 years (range: 80-100 years), and the mean donor ECD was 2889 ± 177 cells/mm 2 (range: 2604-3460 cells/mm 2 ). The mean recipient age was 67.2 ± 6.9 years (range: 60-89 years), and the mean follow-up was 21 ± 11 months (range: 6-52 months). The mean corrected distance visual acuity improved from a preoperative value of 1.36 ± 0.67 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution to 0.22 ± 0.18 at 6 months (n = 75), 0.21 ± 0.2 at 1 year (n = 64), and 0.23 ± 0.3 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution at 2 years (n = 41), respectively ( P < 0.001). In 72 eyes (96%), the graft remained transparent until the last follow-up visit. The mean postoperative ECD was 2073 ±336 (n = 75), 1951 ± 379 (n = 65), and 1807 ± 431 cells/mm 2 (n = 41) at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years, respectively. Five eyes (6.7%) had donor detachments of which 4 required rebubbling. Two grafts failed after 1 year, and 2 eyes (2.6%) had graft rejection, of which 1 eye was reverted successfully by medical management. CONCLUSIONS Cornea from elderly donors aged 80 years and older with good selection criteria may be considered for DMEK with successful outcomes. For India and other countries with unmet tissue needs, every best single cornea counts.

Abstract
To report the clinical results on the use of corneas frozen in Eusol-C as tectonic corneal grafts.Retrospective review of medical records of patients who received frozen corneas as emergency tectonic grafts from 2013 to 2020. Corneas had been stored in Eusol-C preservation media at − 78 °C for a mean time of 6.9 months. Diagnosis, transplant characteristics, microbial culture results, anatomic integrity, epithelial healing, neovascularization, transparency, infection and need for additional surgeries were registered. Fifty corneas were used in 40 patients (mean age 60.5 years, 20 males) with a median follow-up of 27.3 months after surgery. Need for tectonic graft was due to: perforation secondary to immune diseases (6, 12%), neurotrophic ulcer (11, 22%), trauma (3, 6%), corneal infection (11, 22%), chronic disorders of the ocular surface (9, 18%) and previous corneal graft failure (10, 22%). Mean size of grafts was 5.6 mm and 36 cases (72%) also received an amniotic membrane graft. Thirty-eight corneas achieved epithelization (76%), 25 (50%) were clear and 19 (38%) developed neovascularization. None of the corneas were rejected. Seventeen corneas (34%) failed: 7 (14%) due to reactivation of baseline disease and 10 (20%) due to primary graft failure. Four corneas (8%) had positive microbial cultures suggestive of contamination and 2 (4%) developed a cornea abscess non-related to a positive microbial culture. Long-term preservation of donor corneas in Eusol-C at − 78 °C is a viable technique to meet the needs of emergency grafts with minimal equipment.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the characteristics and clinical ocular manifestations of acute corneal graft rejection after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. We conducted an online search of the PubMed and EMBASE databases. Data on recipients’ characteristics, corneal transplantation types, interval between vaccination and allograft rejection, clinical manifestations, and graft rejection medication were extracted. Thirteen articles on 21 patients (23 eyes) with acute corneal graft rejection after COVID-19 vaccination, published between April and December 2021, were included. The median (interquartile range) age at the onset of rejection was 68 (27–83) years. Types of transplantation included penetrating keratoplasty (12 eyes), Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (six eyes), Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (four eyes), and living-related conjunctival-limbal allograft (one eye). The interval between vaccination and rejection ranged from 1 day to 6 weeks. Corneal edema was the leading clinical manifestation (20 eyes), followed by keratic precipitates (14 eyes) and conjunctival or ciliary injection (14 eyes). Medications included frequently applied topical corticosteroids (12 eyes), followed by a combination of topical and oral corticosteroids (four eyes). In addition, the clinical characteristics of corneal allograft rejection after COVID-19 vaccination were identified. Corneal transplant recipients may require further vaccination, necessitating appropriate management and treatment.

Abstract
Background/Aims To determine the impact of COVID-19 on the number of in- and outpatients surgical and diagnostic procedures performed at a southwestern German university hospital with corneal subspecialization. Methods A retrospective examination of the number of inpatients, several outpatients subunits, in- and outpatient surgeries as well as diagnostic procedures at the Department of Ophthalmology, Saarland University Medical Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic "lockdown period" from 18 March until 8 May 2020 in comparison with the corresponding period in 2019 (source: SAP database and electronic patient record FIDUS). Results The year 2020 showed a significant decrease in the number of inpatient surgeries with a total number of 285 vs 412 in 2019. However, the number of corneal transplantations increased significantly (60 in 2020 vs 54 in 2019, p=0.0089). In the various outpatient units of our department, we observed a significant decrease in the number of consultations (1.711 in 2020 vs 3.194 in 2019), especially for cataract surgery consultations (34 vs 137, p<0.0001). The number of outpatient surgeries was significantly reduced in 2020, especially for cataract surgery (64 vs 216, p=0.007) and intravitreal injections (577 vs 768, p<0.0001). Conclusion Despite taking all the necessary precautions to ensure that our medical care can continue to be available reliably and completely safe during the "Corona lockdown period", the number of in- and outpatient surgeries and the number of outpatient consultations decreased significantly. However, the number of corneal transplantations still increased.

Effect of the First Year of COVID-19 Pandemic on Ophthalmological Practice: A Multi-Centre Italian Study with a Focus on Medico-Legal Aspects. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
During the COVID-19 era, several restrictions on surgery have been imposed to reduce the infectious risk among patients and staff and further preserve the availability of critical care resources. The aim of the study was to assess their impact on the ophthalmological practice and its medico-legal implications. A retrospective review of electronic medical records of the ophthalmological departments of the University of Cagliari (SGD) and University Magna Græcia of Catanzaro (UMG), from 16 March 2020 to 14 March 2021 (52 weeks), were compared with data from the corresponding period of the previous year. Weekly data on the number and type of diagnoses and procedures performed were collected and analysed in relation to the weekly average of the total number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs) and inpatients in Sardinia and Calabria. Results showed a significant decrease in cataract surgery operations by 47% and 31%, respectively, in the SGD and UMG (p < 0.05) during the second semester of the year; this drop occurred at the same time as the increase in COVID-19 patients in ICU and those hospitalised in both regions. Additionally, anterior segment surgery decreased at the UMG by 30% (p < 0.05). Vitreoretinal surgery decreased by 27% at the SGD, differently increased amount 31.5% at UMG (p < 0.05). The pandemic had a dramatic impact on elective surgery in ophthalmology, quantifying the backlog is the first step in order to understanding the measures to be taken in near future.

Abstract
Purpose To analyze the impact of COVID-19 on Italian corneal transplantation from March-2020 to February 2021 compared to the same timeframe of the 2 previous years, in order to identify potential consequences of a global pandemic on corneal procurement and transplantation services during this time. Methods This national, multicentric, retrospective cohort study evaluated data collected from 12 (100%) Italian eye banks from March 2020 to February 2021 (Group A). The number of tissues collected, distributed and discarded were compared with the same time-frame of the 2 previous years: 2019 and 2018 (group B and C, respectively). The different type of transplants performed were reported. Data were analyzed using a non-parametric Friedman test. Results Corneal procurement and the percentage of distributed tissues reduced in 2020 by more than 30 and 15%, respectively, compared to the 2 previous years. During the pandemic corneal transplant surgery showed only a modest drop: the number of the penetrating keratoplasties (PKs) and the anterior lamellar keratoplasties (ALKs) decreased by about 30 and 20% in comparison with groups B and C, respectively; between the Endothelial Keratoplasties (EKs), the Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) increased slightly from March 2020 to February 2021. Conclusions Italy was one of the first countries most affected by the outbreak of COVID-19, and the Italian government adopted severe measures to limit viral transmission. The pandemic generated several implications in corneal transplant activity during the first lockdown. Then an efficacious reaction with constant, vigorous work led to a resumption of transplant surgery to a near-normal standard. The increase of EKs, despite the pandemic, is a sign that the advance in corneal transplantation has gone ahead and it continues to evolve.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic on the Ophthalmology Department. This study was based on data collected between January 2019 and November 2021. We divided patients scheduled for eye care during pre-COVID-19 (January–December 2019), early COVID-19 (January–December 2020), and late COVID-19 (January–November 2021) periods. Changes in the outpatient cancellation rate in each department were analyzed and compared in the pre-, early, and late periods. The basic information of cancellation and reason for not visiting the clinic were also analyzed. Overall, 121,042 patients were scheduled to visit the Sanggye Paik Hospital Ophthalmology Department. The overall cancellation rate was 19.13% during pre-COVID-19, 24.13% during early COVID-19, and 17.34% during late COVID-19. The reasons for not visiting the clinic included hospital, patient, and contact factors; hospitalization in other departments and hospitals; and death. The Strabismus/Pediatric Ophthalmology Department showed the highest cancellation rate of 24.21% over three years. There were no significant differences in the causes of hospital visits by period. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an overall decrease in the number of ophthalmic outpatients. However, after about a year, the number of outpatients in these departments recovered to the level before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on corneal transplantation (CT) in Brazil. METHODS Data from patients who underwent CT at the Hospital Oftalmológico de Sorocaba (HOS), Brazil, were analyzed. National and state numbers of keratoplasties, patients added to the CT waiting list, and total patients on the waiting list were also obtained. Baseline prepandemic (from January 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020) data were compared with 2 time frames of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: elective CT suspension period (between April 1, 2020, and September 31, 2020) and after elective CT resumption (between October 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021). RESULTS Despite elective CT resumption after the moratorium, the monthly CT rates did not return to baseline at HOS (-14.7%, P = 0.007), São Paulo state (-19.1%, P = 0.001), or Brazil (-30.1%, P < 0.001). The waiting list increased significantly regionally (P < 0.001) and nationally (P < 0.001). Among optical keratoplasties performed at HOS after resuming elective CTs, the proportion of endothelial keratoplasties declined from 38.2% to 30.0% (P < 0.001), whereas penetrating keratoplasties increased from 33.2% to 39.5% (P < 0.001) when comparing with prepandemic data. CONCLUSIONS Keratoplasty numbers dropped significantly locally, regionally, and nationally. Hence, the CT waiting lists had a progressive increase, with significant long-term implications. An estimated increment on monthly CT rates of approximately 34% in São Paulo state, and 91% in Brazil, is required for the CT waiting list to get back to prepandemic numbers over the next 2 years.

Abstract
Concerns of possible transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from donors to patients by corneal transplantation have caused a decline in corneal transplantations. Graft culture media are routinely tested for infectious risks, but it is unclear whether this constitutes a viable means to avoid transmitting SARS-CoV-2 via keratoplasty. We found that SARS-CoV-2 RNA was not present in the medium after seven days of organ culture of corneas from donors (n = 4), who were SARS-CoV-2-positive upon tissue procurement. These medium samples showed no presence of viral RNA. To pursue this question under controlled conditions and further exclude the possibility of productive infection in corneal grafts, we inoculated corneoscleral discs from healthy donors (n = 8) with infectious SARS-CoV-2 and performed PCR testing of the culture medium at various time points. After seven days of culture, we also tested for SARS-CoV-2 RNA within the inoculated corneal tissue. The medium from tissue samples inoculated with SARS-CoV-2 showed no increase in viral RNA, which may indicate lack of viral replication in these corneal grafts. SARS-CoV-2-RNA was, however, detected on or in corneal tissue seven days after inoculation. Our data suggest that corneal grafts may not be permissive for replication of SARS-CoV-2 and demonstrates that PCR testing of culture media cannot safely exclude that tissue has been exposed to SARS-CoV-2. It also demonstrates the difficulty to differentiate between virus adherence and virus replication by PCR testing in SARS-CoV-2 exposed tissue.

Abstract
Purpose To measure the COVID-19 pandemic impact on missed ophthalmology clinic visits and the influence of patient and eye disease characteristics on likelihood of missing clinic visits before and during the pandemic. Patients and Methods A retrospective observational study analyzing eye clinic patients at a large tertiary care academic institution. We identified patients scheduled for eye care during pre-COVID-19 (January 1–February 29, 2020) and early COVID-19 (March 16–May 31, 2020) time periods. Missed appointment frequency and characteristics were evaluated during each time period. Multivariable logistic regression models were developed to examine adjusted odds of having at least one missed appointment during a given time period. Covariates included age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital status, preferred language (non-English vs English), insurance, distance from clinic, and diagnosis. Results Overall, 82.0% (n = 11,998) of pre-COVID-19 patients completed all scheduled visits, compared to only 59.3% (n = 9020) during COVID-19. Missed visits increased dramatically in late March 2020, then improved week by week through the end of May 2020. General ophthalmology/cataract and strabismus clinics had the highest rates of missed clinic visits during the COVID-19 period; neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea, oculoplastics and glaucoma had the lowest. Females, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, ages 50+, and married patients had higher adjusted odds of missing clinic visits, both pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19. Asian, elderly, and cataract patients had the highest adjusted odds of missing clinic visits during COVID-19 and had significant increases in odds compared to pre-COVID-19. Non-married, diabetic macular edema, and wet age-related macular degeneration patients had the lowest adjusted odds of missed visits during COVID-19. Conclusion Missed clinic visits increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly among elderly and nonwhite patients. These findings reflect differences in eye care delivery during the pandemic, and they indicate opportunities to target barriers to care, even during non-pandemic eras.

Marking DMEK Grafts Using Bandage Contact Lens Interface Technique: Doubling the Utilization During the Acute Shortage of Donor Corneas. Cornea 2021; 41:512-517. Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to describe a novel bandage contact lens (BCL) interface technique for marking the Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) graft so that a single donor cornea can be used effectively for 2 recipients during acute shortage. METHODS This was a retrospective comparative case series. In group A, 37 eyes underwent DMEK using a graft marked by the [DOUBLE HIGH-REVERSED-9 QUOTATION MARK]BCL interface technique" that was compared with 49 conventional DMEK grafts marked through the stromal window (group B). In group A, a resized BCL with a central 3-mm hole with the concavity up was placed between the stroma and peeled-off DM. This BCL with DM was flipped for S-stamping on the DM side. Final trephination was performed on a second Teflon block. The remaining anterior lamellar tissues of group A were used on the same day for other keratoplasty procedures. Endothelial cell density (ECD) and endothelial cell loss between the 2 groups were compared after 3 and 6 months. RESULTS The ECD at 3 months in group A (n = 35) versus group B (n = 45) was 2228 ± 270/mm2 versus 2302 ± 254/mm2 (P = 0.48), and the ECD at 6 months (n = 23 and 22) was 2058 ± 324/mm2 versus 2118 ± 260/mm2 (P = 0.72). The corresponding endothelial cell loss was 23.3% ± 6.8% versus 20.3% ± 6.1% (P = 0.18) at 3 months and 29.1% ± 8.4% versus 26.7% ± 8.0% (P = 0.34) at 6 months. Among anterior tissues of group A, 17 (45.9%) were used for deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, 18 (48.6%) were used for larger therapeutic and tectonic grafts, and 2 were used as keratoprosthesis carriers. Donor detachment rate (8.6% vs. 8.9%) was similar in both groups without primary graft failures. CONCLUSIONS The BCL interface technique is a simple and safe technique for stamping DMEK grafts. Anterior corneal tissues can be used for additional keratoplasties during donor shortage.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease has been described to possibly be associated with ocular surface disturbances. However, whether the virus could invade ocular tissues still remains elusive. In the present study, we tried to investigate the post-mortem presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in corneal epithelium gathered by patients with an ante-mortem confirmed diagnosis of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Cadavers with an ante-mortem confirmed diagnosis of moderate to severe COVID-19 were examined. Clinical and demographic features were retrieved from hospital patients’ notes. For each cadaver, corneal scrapings, conjunctival swabs (CS) and nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) were collected to perform real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction ((RT)-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2. Fourteen consecutive cadavers with an ante-mortem confirmed diagnosis of moderate to severe COVID-19 were examined. The last NPS performed ante-mortem confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in 12/14 (85.7%) patients. The mean death-to-swab time (DtS) was 3.15 ± 0.5 (2.10–5.1) h. The post-mortem NPS and CS found positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA were 9/14 (64.3%) and 3/28 (10.7%), respectively. None of the corneal epithelium scrapes tested positive to RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. These data promote the SARS-CoV-2 as not able to contaminate the post-mortem corneal epithelium, while it can persist in different other structures of the ocular surface (i.e., the conjunctiva). It is reasonable to assume that such a contamination can occur ante-mortem too.
