Molybdenum Complexes as Catalysts for the Oxidation of Cycloalkanes with Molecular Oxygen

New Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Compounds Based on Sodium Peroxidomolybdates (VI) and Derivatives of Pyridine Acids: Structure Determination and Catalytic Properties

Two organic-inorganic hybrids based on sodium peroxidomolybdates(VI) and 3,5-dicarboxylic pyridine acid (Na-35dcpa) or N-oxide isonicotinic acid (Na-isoO) have been synthesized and characterized. All compounds contain inorganic parts: a pentagonal bipyramid with molybdenum center, and an organic part containing 3,5-dicarboxylic pyridine acid or N-oxide isonicotinic acid moieties. The type of organic part used in the synthesis influences the crystal structure of obtained compounds. This aspect can be interesting for crystal engineering. Crystal structures were determined using powder X-ray diffraction or single crystal diffraction for compounds Na-35dcpa and Na-isoO, respectively. Elemental analysis was used to check the purity of the obtained compounds, while X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) vs. temp. was applied to verify their stability. Moreover, all the compounds were examined by Infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Their catalytic activity was tested in the Baeyer-Villiger (BV) oxidation of cyclohexanone to ε-caprolactone in the oxygen-aldehyde system. The highest catalytic activity in the BV oxidation was observed for Na-35dcpa. The compounds were also tested for biological activity on human normal cells (fibroblasts) and colon cancer cell lines (HT-29, LoVo, SW 620, HCT 116). All compounds were cytotoxic against tumor cells with metastatic characteristics, which makes them interesting and promising candidates for further investigations of specific anticancer mechanisms.

Energy Level Alignment at the Cobalt Phosphate/Electrolyte Interface: Intrinsic Stability vs Interfacial Chemical Reactions in 5 V Lithium Ion Batteries

The intrinsic stability of the 5 V LiCoPO₄-LiCo₂P₃O₁₀ thin-film (carbon-free) cathode material coated with MoO₃ thin layer is studied using a comprehensive synchrotron electron spectroscopy in situ approach combined with first-principle calculations. The atomic-molecular level study demonstrates fully reversible electronic properties of the cathode after the first electrochemical cycle. The polyanionic oxide is not involved in chemical reactions with the fluoroethylene-containing liquid electrolyte even when charged to 5.1 V vs Li⁺/Li. The high stability of the cathode is explained on the basis of the developed energy level model. In contrast, the chemical composition of the cathode-electrolyte interface evolves continuously by involving MoO₃ in the decomposition reaction with consequent leaching of oxide from the surface. The proposed mechanisms of chemical reactions are attributed to external electrolyte oxidation via charge transfer from the relevant electron level to the MoO₃ valence band state and internal electrolyte oxidation via proton transfer to the solvents. This study provides a deeper insight into the development of both a doping strategy to enhance the electronic conductivity of high-voltage cathode materials and an efficient surface coating against unfavorable interfacial chemical reactions.

Newly-Obtained Two Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Compounds Based on Potassium Peroxidomolybdate and Dicarboxypyridinic Acid: Structure Determination, Catalytic Properties, and Cytotoxic Effects of Eight Peroxidomolybdates in Colon and Hepatic Cancer Cells

Two new organic-inorganic hybrid compounds containing dicarboxylic pyridine acids have been obtained and characterized. Both compounds are potassium oxidodiperoxidomolybdates with 2,6-dicarboxylicpyridine acid or 3,5-dicarboxylicpyridine acid moieties, respectively. The chemical formula for the first one is C₁₄H₇K₃Mo₂N₂O₁₈ denoted as K26dcpa, the second C₇H₄K₁Mo₁N₁O_11.5-K35dcpa. Their crystal structures were determined using single crystal (K26dcpa) or XRPD-X-ray powder diffraction techniques (K35dcpa). The purity of the compounds was confirmed by elemental analysis. Their thermal stability was determined with the use of non-ambient XRPD. In addition, they were examined by IR spectroscopy methods and catalytic activity studies were performed for them. Catalytic tests in the Baeyer-Villiger reaction and biological activity have been performed for eight compounds: K26dcpa, K35dcpa, and six peroxidomolybdates previously obtained by our group. The anti-proliferative activity of peroxidomolybdenum compounds after 24 h of incubation was studied in vitro against three selected human tumor cell lines (SW620, LoVo, HEP G2) and normal human cells (fibroblasts). The data were expressed as IC₅₀ values. The structure of the investigated oxodiperoxomolybdenum compounds was shown to have influence on the biological activity and catalytic properties. It has been shown that the newly-obtained compound, K35dcpa, is a very efficient catalyst in the Baeyer-Villiger reaction. The best biological activity results were obtained for Na-picO (previously obtained by us), which is a very effective anti-cancer agent towards SW 620 colorectal adenocarcinoma cells.

On the extraction of MoO x photothermally active nanoparticles by gel filtration from a byproduct of few-layer MoS2 exfoliation

Gel filtration is a versatile technique employed for biological molecules and nanoparticles, offering their reproducible classification based on size and shape. Colloidal nanoparticles are of significant interest in biomedical applications due to a large number of solution-based bioconjugation procedures. Nevertheless, the inherent polydispersity of the nanoparticles produced by various techniques necessitates the employment of high yield separation and purification techniques. Here we demonstrate the employment of gel filtration on non-stoichiometric plasmonic MoO x nanoparticles, prepared by an oxidation process during liquid-phase exfoliation of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets. This resulted in the separation of two types of MoO x particles, in the form of two different chromatographic fractions. They showed different sizes, morphological and optical properties. The fraction containing smaller particles with diameters of 1-4 nm, exhibited an increased absorbance peak in the near IR region and responded with a significant temperature increase to laser irradiation at the wavelength close to the maximal absorption. The fraction with the larger particles from 3 up to 10 nm, showed weak photoluminescence and a preferred orientation upon the deposition on a planar substrate. However, it had no absorbance in the near IR compared to the former fraction. According to our knowledge, this is the first time that the gel filtration was applied to the separation of molybdenum oxide nanomaterials. This step ensured the isolation of plasmonic MoO x nanoparticles suitable for further bioconjugation and target photothermal treatment.

Simple Hybrids Based on Mo or W Oxides and Diamines: Structure Determination and Catalytic Properties

Abstract

Crystalline hybrid catalysts based on molybdenum or tungsten oxide and aliphatic diamines were synthesized via simple, eco-friendly reproducible methodologies, starting from commercially available and relatively inexpensive organic and inorganic precursors, and using water as solvent under mild conditions. The crystal structures of the obtained fine powdered solids were solved ab initio from powder X-ray diffraction data. The type of organic component (1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane, 1,3-diaminopropane) may play a structure-directing role. On the other hand, different metals (M = Mo, W) may lead to isostructural one-dimensional hybrids of the type MO3(L) with the same bidentate diamine ligand L. The prepared catalysts were investigated for the liquid phase oxidation of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (cis-cyclooctene, cyclooctane), using different types of oxidants (O2, H2O2, tert-butyl hydroperoxide). Differences in catalytic performances associated with distinct structural features were investigated.

A biradical oxo-molybdenum complex containing semiquinone and o-aminophenol benzoxazole-based ligands

We report a new mononuclear molybdenum(iv) complex, MoOL^BISL^SQ, in which L^SQ (2,4-di-tert-butyl o-semibenzoquinone ligand) has been prepared from the reaction of the o-iminosemibenzoquinone form of a tridentate non-innocent benzoxazole ligand, L^BIS, and MoO₂(acac)₂. The complex was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure of MoOL^BISL^SQ revealed a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal centre, surrounded by one O and two N atoms of L^BIS and two O atoms of L^SQ. The effective magnetic moment (μ_eff) of MoOL^BISL^SQ decreased from 2.36 to 0.2 μ_B in the temperature range of 290 to 2 K, indicating a singlet ground state caused by antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal and ligand centred unpaired electrons. Also, the latter led to the EPR silence of the complex. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies indicate both ligand and metal-centered redox processes. MoOL^BISL^SQ was applied as a catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of cyclohexene to adipic acid and selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones with aqueous hydrogen peroxide.

Three Generations of Cobalt Porphyrins as Catalysts in the Oxidation of Cycloalkanes

Three generations of cobalt porphyrins were synthesized, physicochemically characterized by FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry and applied as catalysts in the oxidation of cycloalkanes with atmospheric molecular oxygen under mild conditions. All examined catalysts were active in the tested reaction, and their catalytic activity varied with the nature and number of substituents on the porphyrin ring. Introduction of electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents at the porphyrin rings increases the activity of metalloporphyrin complexes. It was found, for the first time, that generation II cobalt porphyrins show higher activity in cycloalkane oxidation than cobalt porphyrins of generation III. The lower catalytic activity of generation III cobalt porphyrins can be attributed to the saddle-shaped deformation of the porphyrin macrocycle. DFT modeling of Co porphyrins and their interactions with molecular oxygen provided explanations for the observed effects. On the basis of prior reports and the obtained results, a reaction mechanism is proposed and discussed.

Stereoselective Alkane Oxidation with meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid (MCPBA) Catalyzed by Organometallic Cobalt Complexes

Cobalt pi-complexes, previously described in the literature and specially synthesized and characterized in this work, were used as catalysts in homogeneous oxidation of organic compounds with peroxides. These complexes contain pi-butadienyl and pi-cyclopentadienyl ligands: [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(benzene)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(C₆H₆)]PF₆ (1); diiodo(carbonyl)(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt, Cp*Co(CO)I₂ (2); diiodo(carbonyl)(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, CpCo(CO)I₂ (3); (tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(dicarbonyl)(iodo)cobalt, (C₄Me₄)Co(CO)₂I (4); [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(acetonitrile)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(bipy)(MeCN)]PF₆ (5); bis[dicarbonyl(B-cyclohexylborole)]cobalt, [(C₄H₄BCy)Co(CO)₂]₂ (6); [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(phen)I]PF₆ (7); diiodo(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, [CpCoI₂]₂ (8); [(cyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [CpCo(bipy)I]PF₆ (9); and [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(bipy)I]PF₆ (10). Complexes 1 and 2 catalyze very efficient and stereoselective oxygenation of tertiary C–H bonds in isomeric dimethylcyclohexanes with MCBA: cyclohexanols are produced in 39 and 53% yields and with the trans/cis ratio (of isomers with mutual trans- or cis-configuration of two methyl groups) 0.05 and 0.06, respectively. Addition of nitric acid as co-catalyst dramatically enhances both the yield of oxygenates and stereoselectivity parameter. In contrast to compounds 1 and 2, complexes 9 and 10 turned out to be very poor catalysts (the yields of oxygenates in the reaction with cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane were only 5%–7% and trans/cis ratio 0.8 indicated that the oxidation is not stereoselective). The chromatograms of the reaction mixture obtained before and after reduction with PPh₃ are very similar, which testifies that alkyl hydroperoxides are not formed in this oxidation. It can be thus concluded that the interaction of the alkanes with MCPBA occurs without the formation of free radicals. The complexes catalyze oxidation of alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). For example, tert-BuOOH efficiently oxidizes 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone in 98% yield if compound 1 is used as a catalyst.
