DFT-D2 Study of the Adsorption of Bio-Oil Model Compounds in HZSM-5: C1–C4 Carboxylic Acids

Surface Basicity and Hydrophilic Character of Coal Ash-Derived Zeolite NaP1 Modified by Fatty Acids

Zeolite NaP1 was found to display the highest affinity for CO2 in preliminary modifications of coal fly ash-derived zeolites (4A, Y, NaP1 and X) by four amines (1,3-diaminopropane, N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, Tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and ethylenediamine). In the second step, different fatty acid loaded NaP1 samples were prepared using palmitic, oleic and lauric acids. CO2 and H2O thermal programmed desorption (TPD) revealed changes in intrinsic basicity and hydrophilic character, expressed in terms of CO2 and H2O retention capacity (CRC and WRC, respectively). Infrared spectroscopy (IR), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy allowed for correlating these changes with the type of interactions between the incorporated species and the zeolite surface. The highest CRC values and the lowest CO2 desorption temperatures were registered for NaP1 with the optimum content in palmitic acid (PA) and were explained in terms of the shading effect of surface acidity by the rise of basic Na+-palmitate salt upon cation exchange. The amine/fatty acid combination was found to paradoxically mitigate this beneficial effect of PA incorporation. These results are of great interest because they demonstrate that fatty acid incorporation is an interesting strategy for reversible CO2 capture.

Advances in Versatile Nanoscale Catalyst for the Reductive Catalytic Fractionation of Lignin

In the past five years, biomass-derived biofuels and biochemicals were widely studied both in academia and industry as promising alternatives to petroleum. In this Review, the latest progress of the synthesis and fabrication of porous nanocatalysts that are used in catalytic transformations involving hydrogenolysis of lignin is reviewed in terms of their textural properties, catalytic activities, and stabilities. A particular emphasis is made with regard to the catalyst design for the hydrogenolysis of lignin and/or lignin model compounds. Furthermore, the effects of different supports on the lignin hydrogenolysis/hydrogenation are discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities of lignin hydrogenolysis over nanomaterial-supported catalysts are also presented.

Binding modes of carboxylic acids on cobalt nanoparticles

Owing to their high saturation magnetisation, cobalt nanoparticles hold significant potential for the hyperthermia treatment of tumours. Covalent binding of carboxylic acids to the nanoparticles can induce biocompatibility, whilst also preventing the formation of surface oxides which reduce the magnetic properties of cobalt. Understanding the origin of the acid-metal interaction is key, yet probably the most experimentally challenging step, for the rational design of such entities. In this density functional theory study, we use static calculations to establish that a 57-atom Co cluster is the smallest model able to reproduce the adsorption behaviour of carboxylic acids, and ab initio metadynamics to obtain the structure and the free energy landscape for its interaction with valeric acid. Our simulations show that a bridging bidentate binding mode has a stronger affinity compared to monodentate binding, with energetically high transition barriers between the two. A chelate interaction mode of two carboxyl oxygen atoms can be formed as an intermediate. These results clarify the organic-inorganic interactions in the cobalt-acid system, providing a basis for the rational design of biocompatible metallic nanoparticles.
