Influence of Tetraalkylammonium Compounds on Photocatalytic and Physical Properties of TiO2

Efficiencies Evaluation of Photocatalytic Paints Under Indoor and Outdoor Air Conditions

The removal of indoor and outdoor air pollutants is crucial to prevent environmental and health issues. Photocatalytic building materials are an energy-sustainable technology that can completely oxidize pollutants, improving in situ the air quality of contaminated sites. In this work, different photoactive TiO₂ catalysts (anatase or modified anatase) and amounts were used to formulate photocatalytic paints in replacement of the normally used TiO₂ (rutile) pigment. These paints were tested in two different experimental systems simulating indoor and outdoor environments. In one, indoor illumination conditions were used in the photoreactor for the oxidation of acetaldehyde achieving conversions between 37 and 55%. The other sets of experiments were performed under simulated outdoor radiation for the degradation of nitric oxide, resulting in conversions between 13 and 35%. This wide range of conversions made it difficult to directly compare the paints. Thus, absorption, photonic, and quantum efficiencies were calculated to account for the paints photocatalytic performance. It was found that the formulations containing carbon-doped TiO₂ presented the best efficiencies. The paint with the maximum amount of this photocatalyst showed the highest absorption and photonic efficiencies. On the other hand, the paint with the lowest amount of carbon-doped TiO₂ presented the highest value of quantum efficiency, thus becoming the optimal formulation in terms of energy use.

Regarding the Nature of Charge Carriers Formed by UV or Visible Light Excitation of Carbon-Modified Titanium Dioxide

Although titanium dioxide gathers many of the required properties for its application in photocatalytic processes, its lack of activity in the visible range is a major hurdle yet to be overcome. Among different strategies, the post-synthesis modification of TiO2 powders with organic compounds has already led to commercially available materials, such as KRONOClean 7000. In this work, we apply diffuse reflectance transient absorption spectroscopy on this visible-light active photocatalyst and study the dynamics of the charge carriers alternatively induced by UV or visible light laser irradiation, under inert or reactive atmospheres. Our results can be interpreted by considering the material as TiO2 sensitized by an organic-based layer, in agreement with previous studies on it, and show that the oxidative power of the material is considerably diminished under visible light irradiation. By complementarily performing continuous visible light irradiation photocatalysis experiments in aerated aqueous suspensions, we show that, although the oxidation of methanol proceeds at a very slow rate, the oxidation of chlorpromazine occurs much faster thanks to its better suited redox potential.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds: Simple in Structure, Complex in Application

Quaternary ammonium compounds, referred to as QACs, are cationic substances with a structure on the edge of organic and inorganic chemistry and unique physicochemical properties. The purpose of the present work is to introduce QACs and their wide application potential. Fundamental properties, methods of preparation, and utilization in organic synthesis are reviewed. Modern applications and the use of QACs as reactive substrates, reagents, phase-transfer catalysts, ionic liquids, electrolytes, frameworks, surfactants, herbicides, and antimicrobials are further covered. A brief discussion of the health and environmental impact of QACs is also provided. The emphasis is largely on tetraalkylammonium compounds bearing linear alkyl chains.
