Heterogeneous High-Loading Hyperbranched Polyglycidol with Peripheral NHC–Pd Complex: Synthesis and Application as Catalyst in Suzuki Coupling Reaction

From agricultural waste residue to wealth support: A magnetically N-heterocyclic carbene functionalized corn cob cellulose as a new stabilizer for Pd catalyst in Suzuki reaction

Because of eco-friendliness, biodegradability and ease of modification, cellulose is deemed as alternative to unrenewable petroleum resources. Nonetheless, it is more indispensable to exploit corn cob cellulose produced from agricultural waste residue as supportive materials in green catalysis. In this study, a new magnetically benzimidazole functionalized cellulose/Fe3O4 derived from corn cob cellulose as a stabilizer agent (Fe3O4@CL-NHC) was prepared, and palladium was immobilized on this stabilizer (Fe3O4@CL-NHC-Pd). The catalyst was fully characterized by different techniques including TEM, SEM, and XPS analyses, etc. The abundant hydroxyl groups of cellulose provided uniform dispersion and high stability of palladium, while Fe3O4 as a support offered simple magnetic separation. High efficiency (up to 99 %) was demonstrated by this biocatalyst under green conditions in relatively short reaction times towards Suzuki reactions. Due to collaborative interactions of N-heterocyclic carbene and hydroxyl groups with palladium, the synthesized complex prevented metal leaching effectively (<1 %). Moreover, the magnetic property of this catalyst (43.0 emu g-1) provides facile recovery of this composite from the reaction mixture with great ease for several times, which overcomes issues of complicated work-up separation. This work offers a promising avenue to enriching the application of biopolymer from agricultural residue in the potential organic transformations.

Sustainable carbonaceous nanomaterial supported palladium as an efficient ligand-free heterogeneouscatalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling

A novel ligand-free heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized via pyrolysis of Samanea saman pods to produce carbon nanospheres (SS-CNSs), which served as a carbon support for immobilizing palladium nanoparticles through an in situ reduction technique (Pd/SS-CNS). The SS-CNSs effectively integrated 3% of Pd on their surfaces with no additional activation procedures needed. The nanomaterials obtained underwent thorough characterization employing various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, EDS, ICP-AES, and BET. Subsequently, the efficiency of this Pd/SS-CNS catalyst was assessed for the synthesis of biaryl derivatives via Suzuki coupling, wherein different boronic acids were coupled with various aryl halides using an environmentally benign solvent mixture of EtOH/H2O and employing only 0.1 mol% of Pd/SS-CNS. The catalytic system was conveniently recovered through centrifugation and demonstrated reusability without any noticeable decline in catalytic activity. This approach offers economic viability, ecological compatibility, scalability, and has the potential to serve as an alternative to homogeneous catalysis.

Modification of carbon-based nanomaterials by polyglycerol: recent advances and applications

Hyperbranched polymers, a subclass of dendritic polymers, mimic nature's components such as trees and nerves. Hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) is a hyperbranched polyether with outstanding physicochemical properties, including high water-solubility and functionality, biocompatibility, and an antifouling feature. HPG has attracted great interest in the modification of different objects, in particular carbon-based nanomaterials. In this review, recent advances in the synthesis and application of HPG to modify carbon-based nanomaterials, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene, nanodiamonds, carbon dots, and carbon fibers, are reviewed.

Superbranched polyglycerol nanostructures as drug delivery and theranostics tools for cancer treatment

Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs), such as hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPGs) with a dendritic configuration, have been recognized for their excellent biocompatibility and multifunctionalization. HPGs have been studied for use in the delivery diagnostic, imaging and therapeutic molecules in the area of nanobiomedicine. They show superior characteristics to linear polymers and dendrimers, such as compact structure, a simple manufacturing process with easy functionalization ability, low viscosity, and high stability. Owing to these advantages, HPGs are now considered promising carriers for drug delivery, diagnostics, imaging, and theranostics applications for cancer treatment. In this review, we also discuss safety aspects of HPG-based nanoformulations in various animal models and the clinical translation status of such polymers for real-time applications.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Poly(propyleneimine) Dendrimers Functionalized with Cyclopentadienone N-Heterocyclic-Carbene Ruthenium(0) Complexes

Ligand design in metal chemistry is a fundamental step when pursuing compounds with specific reactivity. In this paper, the functionalization of the OH group in the lateral chain of the N-heterocyclic-carbene (NHC) ligand bound to a bis-carbonyl cyclopentadienone NHC ruthenium(0) complex allowed the decoration of five generations of poly(propyleneimine) (PPIs) dendrimers with up to 64 organometallic moieties. The coupling was achieved by employing carbonyldiimidazole and the formation of carbamate linkages between dendritic peripheral NH2 and lateral OH groups on ruthenium complexes. The synthetic procedure, chemical purification, and spectroscopic characterization of the five generations of dendrimers (3g1–5) are here described. The ruthenium-modified dendrimers were activated as catalysts in the transfer hydrogenation of the model compound 4-fluoroacetophenone in the presence of cerium ammonium nitrate as their mononuclear congeners. The catalytic activity, being similar for the five generations, shows a decrease if compared to mononuclear complexes. This detrimental effect might be ascribed to the –CH2NH– functionalization, largely present in dendrimer skeleton and that can compete with the hydrogen transfer mechanism, but also partially to a dendritic effect caused by steric encumbrance.
