Effective and Stable Zeolite Imidazole Framework-Supported Copper Nanoparticles (Cu/ZIF-8) for Glycerol to Lactic Acid

Tandem hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of furfural to 2-methylfuran over multifunctional metallic Cu nanoparticles supported ZIF-8 catalyst

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH), that employs protic solvents as hydrogen sources to alleviate the use of molecular hydrogen H2, has gained great attention. This work, reports multifunctional, metallic Cu nanoparticles supported ZIF-8 material for CTH of furfural to a highly valued fuel additive, 2-methylfuran (2-MF) using 2-propanol. Of all as-synthesized xCu(yM)/ZIF-8 catalysts with varied NaBH4 concentration (yM) and Cu loading (x), 11Cu(1.5 M)/ZIF-8 exhibited higher catalytic activity with > 99 % FAL conversion and 93.9 % 2-MF selectivity. This is ascribed to its high specific surface area, and existence of optimum amount of Lewis acid-base sites along with Cu0 species, which are responsible for hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and subsequent hydrogenolysis to produce 2-MF. The present work reports a highly efficient and stable, metal-MOF hybrid material for CTH of FAL to 2-MF, which is one among the best reports available in literature, therewith suggests a promising approach for bio-oil upgradation.

Sustainable Production of Lactic Acid from Cellulose Using Au/W-ZnO Catalysts

The catalytic conversion of cellulose to lactic acid (LA) has garnered significant attention in recent years due to the potential of cellulose as a renewable and sustainable biomass feedstock. Here, a series of Au/W-ZnO catalysts were synthesized and employed to transform cellulose into LA. Through the optimization of reaction parameters and catalyst compositions, we achieved complete cellulose conversion with a selectivity of 54.6% toward LA over Au/W-ZnO at 245 °C for 4 h. This catalyst system also proved effective at converting cotton and kenaf fibers. Structural and chemical characterizations revealed that the synergistic effect of W, ZnO, and Au facilitated mesoporous architecture generation and the establishment of an adequate acidic environment. The catalytic process proceeded through the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, isomerization to fructose, and its subsequent conversion to LA, with glucose isomerization identified as the rate-limiting step. These findings provide valuable insights for developing high-performance catalytic systems to convert cellulose.

Facile Synthesis of Micro-Mesoporous Copper Phyllosilicate Supported on a Commercial Carrier and Its Application for Catalytic Hydrogenation of Nitro-Group in Trinitrobenzene

Development of novel Cu-based catalysts has become one of the frontiers in the catalytic production of platform chemicals and in environment protection. However, the known methods of their synthesis are too complicated and result in materials that cannot be used instantly as commercial catalysts. In the present work, a novel material has been synthesized by the facile method of deposition-precipitation using thermal hydrolysis of urea. The conditions for Cu phyllosilicate formation have been revealed (molar ratio urea:copper = 10, 92 °C, 8-11 h). The prepared Cu-based materials were studied by TG-DTA, SEM, TEM, XRD, N₂ adsorption and TPR-H₂ methods, and it was found that the material involves nanoparticles of micro-mesoporous copper phyllosilicate phase with a chrysocolla-like structure inside the pores of a commercial meso-macroporous silica carrier. The chrysocolla-like phase is first shown to be catalytically active in the selective reduction of the nitro-group in trinitrobenzene to an amino-group with molecular hydrogen. Complete conversion of trinitrobenzene with a high yield of amines has been achieved in short time under relatively mild conditions (170 °C, 1.3 MPa) of nitroarene hydrogenation over a copper catalyst.

Catalytic Conversion of Glycerol to Methyl Lactate over Au-CuO/Sn-Beta: The Roles of Sn-Beta

The production of methyl lactate as a degradable polymer monomer from biomass was an important topic for a sustainable society. In this manuscript, glycerol was oxidated to methyl lactate catalyzed by the combination of Au-CuO and Sn-Beta. The influence of Sn content, Sn source, and the preparation conditions for Sn-β was studied. The Au content in Au/CuO was also investigated by varying the Au content in Au/CuO. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy of pyridine adsorption, and TEM to study the role of Sn and the influence of different parameters for catalyst preparation. After the optimization of reaction parameters, the yield of methyl lactate from glycerol reached 59% at 363 K after reacting in 1.6 MPa of O2 for 6 h.

Step by Step Construction of Multifunctional Hollow Double Shell MNPs@MOF as a Powerful Tandem/Cascade Catalyst

The development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts for one-pot tandem/cascade synthesis of imines remains meaningful and challenging. Herein, we constructed an Au/MOF catalyst featured hollow and double MOF shell nanostructure. Owing to its structural merits and acid-basic nature, the as-synthesized Void|(Au)ZIF-8|ZIF-8 catalyst exhibited an enhanced synergistically catalytic performance for tandem catalytic synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohol and aniline under air atmosphere and solvent-free condition. Its 170.16 h⁻¹ of turnover frequency (TOF) was 2.5 times higher than that of the reported catalyst with the highest TOF value.
