Abstract
Performance directors lead high-performance programmes within elite sport and where they opt to invest resources has implications for athletes. This study explores performance directors' perspectives on mental health and illness and their experiences of managing these within elite sport. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 performance directors, resulting in 18 h of data. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. We constructed three themes: 1) making sense of mental health: legitimacy vs. scepticism; 2) mental health as athlete responsibility; and 3) simplifying and sanitising mental health. Performance directors used physical health analogies to make sense of mental health, sometimes describing unrealistic expectations regarding mental health management. They also positioned athletes as responsible for finding solutions to their mental health concerns, at times overlooking the impact of the elite sport environment. Some performance directors shared over-simplified perceptions of mental health, often focusing on 'the positive' and neglecting to talk about the more challenging aspects of mental health and illness. Educating performance directors, as well as others in leadership positions, on the complexities of mental health and illness is recommended. This should include how mental illness differs from physical illness and injury, how to respond when athletes disclose mental health concerns, and how mental illness recovery is often nonlinear and subjectively defined.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals living with mental illness often experience stigma associated with marginalized identities of sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental illness (MI). Sharing stories of lived experiences is an effective approach to reducing various forms of stigma; however, it is unclear whether stories shared by SGM living with mental illness (SGM MI) can reduce MI- and SGM-related stigma. METHODS Using a randomized controlled trial design, participants watched digital stories of self-identified SGM individuals living with a mental illness, non-SGM individuals living with mental illness, or a control condition (TedTalks on environmental issues and growing up in China) to examine the use of representative digital stories in addressing SGM- and MI-related stigma. RESULTS In a sample of 218 participants, digital stories of SGM MI effectively reduced MI-related stigma (personal stigma (from 33.19 to 31.90) and discrimination (from 8.33 to 7.57)), but were ineffective at reducing SGM-related personal stigma (negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men, transphobia, or genderism; p > .05). CONCLUSION Our study highlights the need to develop culturally adapted anti-stigma programs in collaboration with individuals with lived intersectional SGM and MI experiences.

Abstract
Peer support groups have become widely utilized among those in recovery from problematic substance use. Yet, these peer-based programs vary and research examining their effectiveness has yielded mixed results. Relatively less is known about the impacts of arts-based peer recovery programs. Some research suggests that theatre may offer a powerful tool to address biopsychosocial changes among individuals in recovery. To explore the role of arts-based peer support programs, we draw on qualitative interviews with performers in two arts-based recovery programs. Our findings suggest that arts-based peer recovery programs may aid individuals in recovery in four main ways. Performing allowed participants to build relationships with others in recovery, channel experiences creatively while challenging stigma, foster confidence and recovery-identity formation, aiding participants in working through emotional impacts of prior substance use. These findings support emerging scholarship examining the role of performance in challenging stereotypes about substance use to aid those in recovery.

Abstract
This article reports on the findings of a study that explores the utility of digital storytelling as a narrative practice and learning tool for social work in an Australian secure forensic mental health hospital. The short digital stories, or Digital Bytes Project, centered on capturing the lived experience, hopes and perspectives of the hospital's service users by giving voice to their experiences through digital technology. The project was collaboratively designed and co-delivered with social work students, hospital staff, and service users. It aimed to not only destigmatize people with lived experiences of mental distress and criminal justice system involvement but also to give staff and students further insights into understanding who they are working with. Through a series of 11 semi-structured, one on one interviews, this research aims to explore social work student and forensic mental health staff experiences and perceptions in relation to the utility and impact of these digital bytes, reflecting on how the prototype bytes may have impacted their learnings, or practice, including how they then interact with service users. This research investigates how these digital bytes could be used further within forensic mental health organisations and contexts. The research findings demonstrate the overall value of digital bytes in challenging different kinds of stigma, shifting power dynamics and staff perspectives; strengthening rapport and understanding through enhancing engagement and sharing power between students, staff, and consumers; as well as providing insight into the utility of digital bytes for learning and making connections between theory and practice. The preliminary findings from this research suggest the need for greater accessibility, integration, and consideration of these digital tools, with their potential to be translated across multiple human service sectors.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The fear of being devalued or discriminated against is a salient deterrent to seeking mental health care, especially in communities of color where racial stigma also impacts mental health and perceptions of service utilization. To address this issue, our research team partnered with This Is My Brave Inc to develop and evaluate a virtual storytelling intervention to highlight and amplify the voices of Black and Brown Americans living with mental illness and/or addiction. We utilized a pretest-posttest survey design administered electronically to viewers of the series (n = 100 Black, indigenous, people of color and n = 144 non-Hispanic White). Results indicated that postintervention, scores on public stigma and perceived discrimination measures were significantly reduced. We identified significant interaction effects, such that Black, indigenous, people of color viewers showed a greater rate of improvement on outcomes. This study provides strong preliminary evidence of the impact of a culturally meaningful virtual approach to addressing stigma and improving attitudes about mental health treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The positive and negative effects of interacting with web-based content on mental health, and especially self-harm, are well documented. Lived experience stories are one such type of static web-based content, frequently published on health care or third-sector organization websites, as well as social media and blogs, as a form of support for those seeking help via the web. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to increase understanding about how people who self-harm engage with and evaluate web-based lived experience stories. METHODS Overall, 4 web-based focus groups were conducted with 13 people with recent self-harm experience (aged 16-40 years). In total, 3 example lived experience stories were read aloud to participants, who were then asked to share their reactions to the stories. Participants were also encouraged to reflect on stories previously encountered on the web. Data were analyzed thematically. RESULTS Overall, 5 themes were generated: stories of recovery from self-harm and their emotional impact, impact on self-help and help-seeking behaviors, identifying with the narrator, authenticity, and language and stereotyping. CONCLUSIONS Lived experience stories published on the web can provide a valuable form of support for those experiencing self-harm. They can be motivating and empowering for the reader, and they have the potential to distract readers from urges to self-harm. However, these effects may be moderated by age, and narratives of recovery may demoralize older readers. Our findings have implications for organizations publishing lived experience content and for community guidelines and moderators of web-based forums in which users share their stories. These include the need to consider the narrator's age and the relatability and authenticity of their journey and the need to avoid using stigmatizing language.

Abstract
AIMS Mental health-related stigma and discrimination are a complex and widespread issue with negative effects on numerous aspects of life of people with lived experience of mental health conditions. Research shows that social contact is the best evidence-based intervention to reduce stigma. Within the context of a rapid development of remote technology, and COVID-19-related restrictions for face-to-face contact, the aim of this paper is to categorise, compare and define indirect social contact (ISC) interventions to reduce stigma and discrimination in mental health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS MEDLINE, Global Health, EMBASE, PsychINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Control Trials (CENTRAL), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) were searched using a strategy including terms related to 'stigma and discrimination', 'intervention', 'indirect social contact', 'mental health' and 'low- and middle-income countries'. Relevant information on ISC interventions was extracted from the included articles, and a quality assessment was conducted. Emerging themes were coded using a thematic synthesis method, and a narrative synthesis was undertaken to present the results. RESULTS Nine studies were included in the review overall. One study was ineffective; this was not considered for the categorisation of interventions, and it was considered separately for the comparison of interventions. Of the eight effective studies included in synthesis, interventions were categorised by content, combination of stigma-reducing strategies, medium of delivery, delivery agents, target condition and population, as well as by active or passive interaction and follow-up. Most of the interventions used education and ISC. Recovery and personal experience were important content components as all studies included either one or both. Cultural adaptation and local relevance were also important considerations. CONCLUSIONS ISC interventions were effective in overall terms for both the general public and healthcare providers, including medical students. A new definition of ISC interventions in LMICs is proposed. More research and better reporting of intervention details are needed to explore the effectiveness of ISC strategies in LMICs, especially in regions where little relevant research has been conducted.

Abstract
Background Mental illness stigma has been a global concern, owing to its adverse effects on the recovery of people with mental illness, and may delay help-seeking for mental health because of the concern of being stigmatized. With technological advancement, internet-based interventions for the reduction of mental illness stigma have been developed, and these effects have been promising. Objective This study aimed to examine the differential effects of internet-based storytelling programs, which varied in the levels of interactivity and stigma content, in reducing mental illness stigma. Methods Using an experimental design, this study compared the effects of 4 storytelling websites that varied in the levels of interactivity and stigma content. Specifically, the conditions included an interactive website with stigma-related content (combo condition), a noninteractive website with stigma-related content (stigma condition), an interactive website without stigma-related content (interact condition), and a noninteractive website without stigma-related content (control condition). Participants were recruited via mass emails to all students and staff of a public university and via social networking sites. Eligible participants were randomized into the following four conditions: combo (n=67), stigma (n=65), interact (n=64), or control (n=67). The participants of each group viewed the respective web pages at their own pace. Public stigma, microaggression, and social distance were measured on the web before the experiment, after the experiment, and at the 1-week follow-up. Perceived autonomy and immersiveness, as mediators, were assessed after the experiment. Results Both the combo (n=66) and stigma (n=65) conditions were effective in reducing public stigma and microaggression toward people with mental illness after the experiment and at the 1-week follow-up. However, none of the conditions had significant time×condition effects in reducing the social distance from people with mental illness. The interact condition (n=64) significantly reduced public stigma after the experiment (P=.02) but not at the 1-week follow-up (P=.22). The control condition (n=67) did not significantly reduce all outcomes associated with mental illness stigma. Perceived autonomy was found to mediate the effect of public stigma (P=.56), and immersiveness mediated the effect of microaggression (P=.99). Conclusions Internet-based storytelling programs with stigma-related content and interactivity elicited the largest effects in stigma reduction, including reductions in public stigma and microaggression, although only its difference with internet-based storytelling programs with stigma-related content was not statistically significant. In other words, although interactivity could strengthen the stigma reduction effect, stigma-related content was more critical than interactivity in reducing stigma. Future stigma reduction efforts should prioritize the production of effective stigma content on their web pages, followed by considering the value of incorporating interactivity in future internet-based storytelling programs. Abstract
Background Stigma is one of the most significant constraints on people living with depression. There is a lack of validated scales in Portugal to measure depression stigma; therefore, the Depression Stigma Scale (DSS) is essential to the depression stigma research in Portugal. Methods We developed the adaptation process with the ITC Guidelines for Translation and Adapting Tests taken into consideration. We collected the sample as part of the OSPI program—Optimizing suicide prevention programs and their implementation in Europe, specifically within the application in Portugal, and included 1693 participants. Floor-ceiling effects and response ranges were analyzed, and we calculated Cronbach alphas, and Confirmatory Analysis. Validity evidence was tested with two well-documented hypotheses, using data on gender and depression symptoms. Results The sample was well comparable with the general Portuguese population, indicating its representativeness. We identified a three-factor structure in each subscale (personal and perceived stigma): weak-not-sick, discrimination, and dangerous/unpredictable, with good model fit results. The Cronbach's alphas were satisfactory, and validity was confirmed. Conclusions This study established the validity and demonstrated good psychometric properties of the DSS in the Portuguese population. The validation of the DSS can be beneficial in exploring stigma predictors and evaluating the effectiveness of stigma reduction interventions. Abstract
University students are a risk group for developing mental illness, but they do not receive the care they need because of hampered help-seeking induced by stigma. This study evaluates the effects of a video-based stigma reduction intervention and help-seeking attitudes promotion in university students. We randomly distributed a sample of university students among one control group (CG, n = 188) and two intervention groups (IG-1, n = 222 and IG-2, n = 216): IG-1 watched a contact-based video and IG-2 the same video plus a psychoeducational video. The study followed an experimental single-blind randomized control trial design with a pre-test before the intervention (M0), a post-test, and a follow-up test. We evaluated participants using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Questionnaire, the Depression Stigma Scale, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder. A total of 626 participants with a mean age of 19.85 (SD=1.48) responded to all evaluation moments. At M0, there were no differences between groups on stigma or help-seeking attitudes. Immediately after the intervention, stigma levels significantly decreased, and help-seeking attitudes significantly improved. These effects persisted for the next five months. Video-based depression stigma reduction intervention can be an essential tool to reduce depression stigma and improve help-seeking attitudes.
