Chemical constituents and antioxidant activity of n-hexane extract of Impatiens bicolor

Mitigating Effect of Dietary Dioclea reflexa (Hook F) Seed Inclusion in Experimental Colon Carcinogenesis

Rats exposed to 72-hour intrarectal instillations of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) were fed with Dioclea reflexa seed-included diets (0, 2.5, 5.0, and 10%). Following sacrifice, organs and blood were collected and analyzed for indices of oxidative stress and carcinogenesis using spectrophotometric, ELISA, histological, and immunohistochemical techniques. Dioclea reflexa seed-included diets significantly ( $p<0.05$ ) prevented MNU-induced elevation of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), malondialdehyde, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and boosted the activities of glutathione s-transferase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. It also prevented MNU-induced colonic mucosal ulceration/interglandular inflammations and protected the mismatch repair gene, Mutl homolog1, against MNU-induced damage. There was a strong negative relationship between CEA, NLR, and the antioxidant enzyme activities, as well as total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and crude fiber, while CEA correlated positively with malondialdehyde levels. These results suggest that Dioclea reflexa seed is endowed with constituents possessing a potent capacity to mitigate oxidative stress, as well as the initiation and promotion of chemically induced colon carcinogenesis.

Lipophilic components and evaluation of the cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of

The chemical composition of the lipophilic fractions of Impatiens glandulifera Royle and I. noli-tangere L. were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)., The study focused on the fatty acids, triterpenoids and sterols in the leaves, roots and seeds. Most of the identified compounds are new for these species. a-linolenic, oleic and palmitic acids were the most abundant in the fatty acid fractions, β-amyrin and 5a-lup-20(29)-en-3β-ol in the triterpenoid fractions, and β-sitosterol, spinasterol and chondrillasterol in the sterol fractions. The fatty acid and triterpenoid fractions showed strong antioxidant activity, similar to positive controls. Moreover, the triterpenoid fraction from I. noli-tangere seeds significantly inhibited HL-60 human leukemia cells. Other fractions showed moderate cytotoxicity. The present study suggests that I. glandulifera and I. noli-tangere are good source of omega-3 fatty acids, and they might be considered as antioxidant and chemopreventive agents.

Comparison of the Essential Oil Composition of Selected Impatiens Species and Its Antioxidant Activities

The present paper describes the chemical composition of the essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from four Impatiens species, Impatiens glandulifera Royle, I. parviflora DC., I. balsamina L. and I. noli-tangere L. The GC and GC-MS methods resulted in identification of 226 volatile compounds comprising from 61.7%-88.2% of the total amount. The essential oils differed significantly in their composition. Fifteen compounds were shared among the essential oils of all investigated Impatiens species. The majority of these constituents was linalool (0.7%-15.1%), hexanal (0.2%-5.3%) and benzaldehyde (0.1%-10.2%). Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the essential oils was investigated using different methods. The chemical composition of the essential oils and its antioxidant evaluation are reported for the first time from the investigated taxon.
