Simultaneous effects of two fungicides (copper and dimethomorph) on their phytoremediation using Lemna minor

Sorption of cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium from artificial wetlands using Lemna aequinoctialis

The efficacy of the lesser duckweed, Lemna aequinoctialis (Welw.), to remediate varying concentrations of cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium from an organo-metallic contaminated media was tested in artificial surface wetland mesocosm experiment. A 100 g of fresh-weight duckweed was introduced into each of the mesocosm, except for the control setup and monitored for 120 days while the metals removal rate was quantified using an atomic absorption spectrometer. A time-dependent and partial sorption of metals was observed with the highest removal rate recorded for cadmium (71.96%), followed by lead (69.23%), vanadium (55.22%), and chromium (41.64%). The uptake and bioaccumulation of metals were reflected in the increased plant biomass (p < 0.05, F = 97.12) and relative growth rate (p < 0.05, F = 1214.35) in duckweed. A coefficient (r2) of 0.951, 0.919, 0.970, and 0.967 was recorded for cadmium, chromium, lead, and vanadium respectively, indicating that the remediation of metals followed the first-order kinetic rate model. This study highlights the efficacy of the lesser duckweed to preferentially remediate metals in an organo-metallic complex medium for potential wastewater treatment in the petrochemical industry.

Four PQQ-Dependent Alcohol Dehydrogenases Responsible for the Oxidative Detoxification of Deoxynivalenol in a Novel Bacterium Ketogulonicigenium vulgare D3_3 Originated from the Feces of Tenebrio molitor Larvae

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is frequently detected in cereals and cereal-based products and has a negative impact on human and animal health. In this study, an unprecedented DON-degrading bacterial isolate D3_3 was isolated from a sample of Tenebrio molitor larva feces. A 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis and genome-based average nucleotide identity comparison clearly revealed that strain D3_3 belonged to the species Ketogulonicigenium vulgare. This isolate D3_3 could efficiently degrade 50 mg/L of DON under a broad range of conditions, such as pHs of 7.0-9.0 and temperatures of 18-30 °C, as well as during aerobic or anaerobic cultivation. 3-keto-DON was identified as the sole and finished DON metabolite using mass spectrometry. In vitro toxicity tests revealed that 3-keto-DON had lower cytotoxicity to human gastric epithelial cells and higher phytotoxicity to Lemna minor than its parent mycotoxin DON. Additionally, four genes encoding pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent alcohol dehydrogenases in the genome of isolate D3_3 were identified as being responsible for the DON oxidation reaction. Overall, as a highly potent DON-degrading microbe, a member of the genus Ketogulonicigenium is reported for the first time in this study. The discovery of this DON-degrading isolate D3_3 and its four dehydrogenases will allow microbial strains and enzyme resources to become available for the future development of DON-detoxifying agents for food and animal feed.

Dimethomorph degradation in vineyards examined by isomeric and isotopic fractionation

Knowledge of the degradation extent and pathways of fungicides in the environment is scarce. Fungicides may have isomers with distinct fungal-control efficiency, toxicity and fate in the environment, requiring specific approaches to follow up the degradation of individual isomers. Here we examined the degradation of the widely used fungicide dimethomorph (DIM) in a vineyard catchment using ratios of carbon stable isotopes (δ¹³C) and E/Z isomer fractionation (IF(Z)). In a microcosm laboratory experiment, DIM degradation half-life in soil was 20 ± 3 days, and was associated with significant isomeric (ΔIF(Z) = +30%) and isotopic (Δδ¹³C up to 7‰) fractionation. This corresponds to an isomer enrichment factor of ε_IR = -54 ± 6%, suggesting isomer selectivity and similar carbon stable isotopic fractionation values of ε_DIM-(Z) = -1.6 ± 0.2‰ and ε_DIM-(E) = -1.5 ± 0.2‰. Isomeric and isotopic fractionation values were used to estimate DIM degradation in topsoil and transport in a vineyard catchment over two wine-growing seasons. DIM concentrations following DIM application were up to 3 μg g^-1 in topsoil and 29 μg L^-1 in runoff water at the catchment outlet. Accordingly, the IF(Z) and δ¹³C values of DIM in soil were similar to those observed in DIM commercial formulations. The gradual enrichments in DIM-(Z) and ¹³C of the residual DIM in soil indicated DIM biodegradation over time. DIM biodegradation estimated based on E/Z isomer and carbon stable isotope ratios in topsoil and runoff water ranged from 0% after DIM application up to 100% at the end of the wine-growing season. DIM biodegradation was overestimated compared to conventional approaches relying on DIM mass balance, field concentrations and half-lives. Altogether, our study highlights the usefulness of combining carbon stable isotopes, E/Z isomers and classical approaches to estimate fungicide degradation at the catchment scale, and uncovers difficulties in using laboratory-derived values in field studies.

Effects of submerged macrophytes (Elodea nuttallii) on water quality and microbial communities of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) ponds

Traditional aquaculture ponds are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems; thus, ecological aquaculture is increasingly valued for its beneficial ecological properties and ecosystem services. However, little is known about ecological aquaculture of largemouth bass with submerged vegetation. Here, we designed three ecological ponds of cultured largemouth bass with submerged macrophytes (the EM group) and three ponds with traditional aquaculture (the M group) to reveal the response of water quality, and phytoplankton and bacterial communities, to submerged macrophyte bioremediation during a 90-day culture period. We observed that Cyanobacterial outbreak occurred in the M group ponds from day 7 to the end of the experiment; however, there were no Cyanobacterial blooms in the EM group ponds throughout the culture period. Compared with the M group ponds, the EM group ponds, which had submerged hydrophytes, had significantly decreased concentrations of TP, TN, and COD_Mn, but significantly increased DO concentrations throughout the experimental period. Moreover, ecological aquaculture with submerged macrophytes showed strong effects on the phytoplankton and bacterial community compositions. In particular, the M group ponds had higher phytoplankton density and mainly included Cyanobacteria, whereas the EM group had lower phytoplankton density and mainly included Chlorophyta. Moreover, higher alpha diversity, as determined by Ace and Simpson index values, was detected for bacterial communities in the EM group ponds. Furthermore, PCoA clearly grouped the bacterial communities according to the two culture modes throughout the culture period. These results indicate that ecological aquaculture with submerged macrophytes can improve water quality, control Cyanobacterial blooms, and affect the diversity and composition of bacterial communities. These valuable effects seem to be beneficial and consistent to maintaining aquaculture ecosystem stability.

Use of cover crops in vineyards to prevent groundwater pollution by copper and organic fungicides. Soil column studies

Several fungicides, such as copper and organic products (synthetic or natural), are currently being used in vineyards to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) resulting in soil, surface water, and groundwater pollution. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of using cover crops as an agricultural practice in vineyards to protect soil and groundwater pollution. For that purpose, we performed different soil column studies to quantify soil leaching of selected fungicides (copper, dimethomorph, oxathiapiprolin, zoxamide, acibenzolar-s-methyl, and laminarin) following a rainfall event after a conventional fungicide vineyard application. Two types of vineyard soils (loam and sandy-loam soil textures) and three ground covers (bare ground, monoculture cover, and polyculture cover) were assessed. These studies were completed with hydroponic assays to check the effectiveness of cover roots in the fungicide degradation. Mass balance results show that whereas 3 fungicides (Cu, zoxamide, and dimethomorph) were leached through sandy soil columns, only copper was leached from loam soil columns. The effect of cover crops was only significant for Cu and zoxamide when fungicides were applied 24 h before the rain event, reducing the fungicide leaching by 30%. Hydroponic studies showed that cover roots enhanced the kinetic rates of almost all tested fungicides by 5-467%, suggesting that they are relevant to improving the degradation of fungicides in the soil column. These results are relevant to drawing up recommendations on the use of cover crops to protect soil and groundwater pollution by fungicides.

Duckweed Potential for the Phytoremediation of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS): Identification of Some Intermediate Biodegradation Products and Evaluation of Antioxidant System

Duckweed (Lemna minor L.) has a high potential for wastewater treatment. Here, its capability for bioremoval of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) as one of the primary contaminants of water resources was evaluated. The effect of some operational parameters on surfactant removal efficiency was determined. Also, the impact of LAS on several physiological responses of Lemna was investigated. LAS remediation efficiency of L. minor was elevated with increasing LAS concentration, duckweed weight, and temperature. Furthermore, the optimal pH for removal was 7-8.5. The benzenesulfonate ring and five homologs of sulfophenyl carboxylate were identified as intermediates in the LAS degradation pathway. A decrease in relative growth rate and pigment contents was observed by increasing LAS concentration. In contrast, an increase in hydrogen peroxide content and electrolyte leakage indicated oxidative stress by LAS. Induction of enzymatic/non-enzymatic antioxidants was observed during the surfactant remediation process, indicating their role in overcoming free radicals generated under surfactant stress.

Particularities of Fungicides and Factors Affecting Their Fate and Removal Efficacy: A Review

Systemic fungicide use has increased over the last decades, despite the susceptibility of resistance development and the side effects to human health and the environment. Although herbicides and insecticides are detected more frequently in environmental samples, there are many fungicides that have the ability to enter water bodies due to their physicochemical properties and their increasing use. Key factors affecting fungicide fate in the environment have been discussed, including the non-target effects of fungicides. For instance, fungicides are associated with the steep decline in bumblebee populations. Secondary actions of certain fungicides on plants have also been reported recently. In addition, the use of alternative eco-friendly disease management approaches has been described. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) comprise an environmentally friendly, low cost, and efficient fungicide remediation technique. Fungicide removal within CWs is dependent on plant uptake and metabolism, absorption in porous media and soil, hydrolysis, photodegradation, and biodegradation. Factors related to the efficacy of CWs on the removal of fungicides, such as the type of CW, plant species, and the physicochemical parameters of fungicides, are also discussed in this paper. There are low-environmental-risk fungicides, phytohormones and other compounds, which could improve the removal performance of CW vegetation. In addition, specific parameters such as the multiple modes of action of fungicides, side effects on substrate microbial communities and endophytes, and plant physiological response were also studied. Prospects and challenges for future research are suggested under the prism of reducing the risk related to fungicides and enhancing CW performance.

Identification of Novel Rotihibin Analogues in Streptomyces scabies, Including Discovery of Its Biosynthetic Gene Cluster

Streptomyces scabies is a phytopathogen associated with common scab disease. This is mainly attributed to its ability to produce the phytotoxin thaxtomin A, the biosynthesis of which is triggered by cellobiose. During a survey of other metabolites released in the presence of cellobiose, we discovered additional compounds in the thaxtomin-containing extract from Streptomyces scabies. Structural analysis by mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed that these compounds are amino acid sequence variants of the TOR (target of rapamycin) kinase (TORK) pathway-inhibitory lipopeptide rotihibin A, and the main compounds were named rotihibins C and D. In contrast to thaxtomin, the production of rotihibins C and D was also elicited in the presence of glucose, indicating different regulation of their biosynthesis. Through a combination of shotgun and targeted proteomics, the putative rotihibin biosynthetic gene cluster rth was identified in the publicly available genome of S. scabies 87-22. This cluster spans 33 kbp and encodes 2 different nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and 12 additional enzymes. Homologous rth biosynthetic gene clusters were found in other publicly available and complete actinomycete genomes. Rotihibins C and D display herbicidal activity against Lemna minor and Arabidopsis thaliana at low concentrations, shown by monitoring the effects on growth and the maximal photochemistry efficiency of photosystem II. IMPORTANCE Rotihibins A and B are plant growth inhibitors acting on the TORK pathway. We report the isolation and characterization of new sequence analogues of rotihibin from Streptomyces scabies, a major cause of common scab in potato and other tuber and root vegetables. By combining proteomics data with genomic analysis, we found a cryptic biosynthetic gene cluster coding for enzyme machinery capable of rotihibin production. This work may lead to the biotechnological production of variants of this lipopeptide to investigate the exact mechanism by which it can target the plant TORK pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana. In addition, bioinformatics revealed the existence of other variants in plant-associated Streptomyces strains, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic species, raising new questions about the actual function of this lipopeptide. The discovery of a module in the nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) that incorporates the unusual citrulline residue may improve the prediction of peptides encoded by cryptic NRPS gene clusters.

Bacterial Enrichment Cultures Biotransform the Mycotoxin Deoxynivalenol into a Novel Metabolite Toxic to Plant and Porcine Cells

The mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), produced in wheat, barley and maize by Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum, is threatening the health of humans and animals. With its worldwide high incidence in food and feed, mitigation strategies are needed to detoxify DON, maintaining the nutritional value and palatability of decontaminated commodities. A promising technique is biological degradation, where microorganisms are used to biotransform mycotoxins into less toxic metabolites. In this study, bacterial enrichment cultures were screened for their DON detoxification potential, where DON and its potential derivatives were monitored. The residual phytotoxicity was determined through a bioassay using the aquatic plant Lemna minor L. Two bacterial enrichment cultures were found to biotransform DON into a still highly toxic metabolite for plants. Furthermore, a cytotoxic effect was observed on the cellular viability of intestinal porcine epithelial cells. Through liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis, an unknown compound was detected, and tentatively characterized with a molecular weight of 30.0 Da (i.e., CH₂O) higher than DON. Metabarcoding of the subsequently enriched bacterial communities revealed a shift towards the genera Sphingopyxis, Pseudoxanthomonas, Ochrobactrum and Pseudarthrobacter. This work describes the discovery of a novel bacterial DON-derived metabolite, toxic to plant and porcine cells.

Development of an in vitro gastro-intestinal pig model to screen potential detoxifying agents for the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a type B trichothecene mycotoxin with worldwide high incidence in feed which is produced by Fusarium species. Strategies are needed to eliminate its health risk for livestock and to minimise its economic impact on production. In order to assess the efficacy of potential physical, chemical and biological DON detoxifying agents, a good in vitro model is necessary to perform a fast and high-throughput screening of new compounds before in vivo trials are set up. In this paper, an in vitro model was developed to screen potential commercial products for DON degradation and detoxification. Contaminated feed with potential detoxifying agents are first applied to a simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a pig, after which detoxification is assessed through a robust, inexpensive and readily applicable Lemna minor L. aquatic plant bioassay which enables evaluation of the residual toxicity of possible metabolites formed by DON detoxifying agents. The GIT simulation enables taking matrix and incubation parameters into account as they can affect the binding, removal or degradation of DON. One product could reduce DON in feed in the GIT model for almost 100% after 6 h. DON metabolites were tentatively identified with LC-MS/MS. This GIT simulation coupled to a detoxification bioassay is a valuable model for in vitro screening and assessing compounds for DON detoxification, and could be expanded towards other mycotoxins.

Rapid degradation of dimethomorph in polluted water and soil by Bacillus cereus WL08 immobilized on bamboo charcoal-sodium alginate

The presence of hazardous dimethomorph residues in the environment poses a threat to birds, aquatic organisms and mammals. The novel pure strain Bacillus cereus WL08 responsible for detoxifying dimethomorph was isolated from dimethomorph-polluted soils. The immobilized system of WL08 was developed using bamboo charcoal (BC) and sodium alginate (SA). Immobilization significantly improved tolerance and stability of strain WL08. Under optimal conditions of pH 7.0 and 30 ℃, free and immobilized WL08 degraded 66.95% and 96.88% of 50 mg/L dimethomorph within 72 h, respectively. Moreover, strain WL08 effectively degraded dimethomorph to simple products which were lower toxic than dimethomorph. In a continuous reactor system, immobilized WL08 removed 85.61% of dimethomorph for 30 d at an influent concentration of 50-100 mg/L. In the field soil sprayed with 4.20 kg a.i./ha 80% dimethomorph water dispersible granule (WDG) was treated by immobilized WL08, the lower half-life (1.93 d) was observed, as compared with free WL08 (4.28 d) and natural dissipation (23.82 d). Immobilized WL08 can be considered as a tool for the removal of dimethomorph in water-soil systems. This study provides a feasible microbe-based strategy for bioremediation of dimethomorph-polluted environments.

Silicon modulates copper absorption and increases yield of Tanzania guinea grass under copper toxicity

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element which was proven to enhance the tolerance of plants to excess metal in a given growth medium. However, the efficacy of Si in mitigating Cu toxicity in plants can vary between plant species and with the amount of copper (Cu) present in the soil/medium. An experiment was performed to investigate the role of Si in alleviating Cu toxicity in Tanzania guinea grass (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania). The experimental design consisted on complete random blocks with tree replicates containing three Si rates (0, 1, and 3 mmol L-1) and four Cu rates (0.3, 250, 500, and 750 μmol L-1). The grass was grown for 62 days in a greenhouse under hydroponic conditions, with a total of 36 pots. Thirteen days after sowing, seedlings were transplanted to pots and grown for further 25 days, and then exposed to the set Cu rates for 7 days. The plants were also evaluated more for 30 days after the first harvesting. The results confirmed that the Si supply to Tanzania guinea grass can alleviate the effects of excessive Cu. Plant yield increased with Si supply and decreased with the increment of Cu rates in both growth periods. Copper concentration in diagnostic leaves (DL) and in roots, and Cu content in shoots and roots were higher in plants exposed to Cu of 750 μmol L-1 with no Si application than in other combinations. Besides reducing Cu concentration in plant tissues, the most important Si role was reducing the transport of Cu from roots to shoots, which allowed successive harvesting. Graphical abstract.

Assessing and Modelling the Efficacy of Lemna paucicostata for the Phytoremediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Crude Oil-Contaminated Wetlands

The potentials of the invasive duckweed species, Lemna paucicostata to remove pollutants from aquatic environment was tested in a constructed wetlands as an ecological based system for the phytoremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in crude oil-contaminated waters within 120 days. Total petroleum hydrocarbons in wetlands and tissues of duckweed were analyzed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector following established methods while the experimental data were subjected to the first-order kinetic rate model to understand the remediation rate of duckweed in wetlands. L. paucicostata effected a significant (F = 253.405, P < 0.05) removal of hydrocarbons from wetlands reaching 97.91% after 120 days. Assessment on the transport and fate of hydrocarbons in duckweed indicated that L. paucicostata bioaccumulated less than 1% and significantly biodegraded 97.74% of hydrocarbons in wetlands at the end of the study. The experimental data reasonably fitted (r2 = 0.938) into the first-order kinetic rate model. From the result of the study, it is reasonable to infer that L. paucicostata is an effective aquatic macrophyte for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons in moderately polluted waters.

Application of common duckweed (Lemna minor) in phytoremediation of chemicals in the environment: State and future perspective

Over the past 50 years, different strategies have been developed for the remediation of polluted air, land and water. Driven by public opinion and regulatory bottlenecks, ecological based strategies are preferable than conventional methods in the treatments of chemical effluents. Ecological systems with the application of microbes, fungi, earthworms, plants, enzymes, electrode and nanoparticles have been applied to varying degrees in different media for the remediation of various categories of pollutants. Aquatic macrophytes have been used extensively for the remediation of pollutants in wastewater effluents and aquatic environment over the past 30 years with the common duckweed (L. minor) as one of the most effective macrophytes that have been applied for remediation studies. Duckweed has shown strong potentials for the phytoremediation of organic pollutants, heavy metals, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, radioactive waste, nanomaterials, petroleum hydrocarbons, dyes, toxins, and related pollutants. This review covers the state of duckweed application for the remediation of diverse aquatic pollutants and identifies gaps that are necessary for further studies as we find pragmatic and sound ecological solutions for the remediation of polluted environment for sustainable development.

Adsorption, Bioaccumulation and Kinetics Parameters of the Phytoremediation of Cobalt from Wastewater Using Elodea canadensis

Present paper investigates the phytoremediation of cobalt from wastewaters using Elodea canadensis. Bioaccumulation tests were conducted at various concentrations of cobalt ranging from 1 to 15 mg/L. Final concentrations of cobalt in wastewaters, after phytoremediation, were less than 1 mg/L. E. canadensis' hyperaccumulator character with regard to cobalt is emphasised by the amount of cobalt retained: 0.39% ± 0.02% of dry mass at an initial concentration in wastewater of 15 mg/L. After 14 days of exposure to contaminant, the biomass as well as the relative growth rate has increased with the amount of cobalt in wastewaters, the plant manifesting an excellent tolerance to cobalt exposure. Adsorption of cobalt ions by E. canadensis can be well described by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the pseudo-second-order model equation.

Microbial Detoxification of Deoxynivalenol (DON), Assessed via a Lemna minor L. Bioassay, through Biotransformation to 3-epi-DON and 3-epi-DOM-1

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites produced by fungi. To mitigate mycotoxins in food or feed, biotransformation is an emerging technology in which microorganisms degrade toxins into non-toxic metabolites. To monitor deoxynivalenol (DON) biotransformation, analytical tools such as ELISA and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) are typically used. However, these techniques do not give a decisive answer about the remaining toxicity of possible biotransformation products. Hence, a bioassay using Lemna minor L. was developed. A dose-response analysis revealed significant inhibition in the growth of L. minor exposed to DON concentrations of 0.25 mg/L and higher. Concentrations above 1 mg/L were lethal for the plant. This bioassay is far more sensitive than previously described systems. The bioassay was implemented to screen microbial enrichment cultures, originating from rumen fluid, soil, digestate and activated sludge, on their biotransformation and detoxification capability of DON. The enrichment cultures originating from soil and activated sludge were capable of detoxifying and degrading 5 and 50 mg/L DON. In addition, the metabolites 3-epi-DON and the epimer of de-epoxy-DON (3-epi-DOM-1) were found as biotransformation products of both consortia. Our work provides a new valuable tool to screen microbial cultures for their detoxification capacity.

Toxicological effects of dimethomorph on soil enzymatic activity and soil earthworm (Eisenia fetida)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of the fungicide dimethomorph to soil microbial activity and the earthworm Eisenia fetida. Multiple biomarkers, namely, four soil enzymes (urease, dehydrogenase, invertase, and acid phosphatase), four earthworm biochemical indices (dismutase, catalase, cellulase, and malondialdehyde), and the transcriptional levels of both target genes (dismutase and catalase) were measured at 1, 10, and 100 mg kg^-1 after 1, 7, 21, and 28 days. The degradation rate of dimethomorph in soil was also determined, and the results indicated that most parameters did not differ from the controls at 1 and 10 mg kg^-1 dimethomorph by the last exposure time (28 d). However, high concentrations (100 mg kg^-1) of dimethomorph had varying effects on soil enzymatic activity and earthworms. These effects gradually decreased with prolonged exposure times. Positive correlations (R² > 0.57) between the target gene expression levels and antioxidant enzyme activities were observed in this study. We also found that earthworms have improved soil microbial activity and accelerated the degradation of dimethomorph. Overall, higher concentrations of dimethomorph might pose an ecological hazard to soil environments in the short term.

Comparison of biosorption and phytoremediation of cadmium and methyl parathion, a case-study with live Lemna gibba and Lemna gibba powder

Heavy metals and pesticides can be adsorbed by several biomasses such as living or non-living aquatic plants. In this study adsorption properties of live Lemna gibba and Lemna gibba powder were investigated with regard to cadmium and methyl parathion (MP). Toxicity data (IC50) on live L. gibba indicated that the period of four days was adequate for phytoremediation. Initial adsorption studies showed that both adsorbents were capable of removing cadmium and methyl parathion. Cadmium and methyl parathion adsorption onto L. gibba powder was fast and equilibrium was attained within 120min. The adsorption data could be well interpreted by the Freundlich model. The KF were: 7.8963 (Cd(2+)/ live Lemna); 0.7300 (MP/live Lemna); 11.5813 (Cd(2+)/Lemna powder); 1.1852 (MP/Lemna powder) indicating that Cd(2+) was more efficiently removed by both biosorbents than MP. Adsorption kinetics for cadmium and methyl parathion in both systems and rate constants were determined for each contaminant. It was found that the overall adsorption process was best described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. Boyd model and external mass-transfer expression were tested. It was concluded that cadmium and methyl parathion sorption onto Lemna powder is governed by film diffusion.
