Mixture of Pb, Zn and Cu on root permeability and radial oxygen loss in the mangrove Bruguiera gymnorrhiza

Pb contaminated soil from a lead-acid battery plant immobilized by municipal sludge and raw clay

Soil heavy metal pollution poses a serious threat to the eco-environment. Municipal sludge-based passivators and clay minerals have been widely applied to immobilize heavy metal contamination in soils. However, little is known about the immobilization effect and mechanisms of raw municipal sludge and clay in reducing the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals in soils. Here, municipal sludge, raw clay and mixtures of thereof were used to remediate Pb-contaminated soil from a Pb-acid battery factory. The remediation performance was evaluated through acid leaching, sequential extraction, and plant assay. Results showed that the leachable Pb content in the soil decreased from 5.0 mg kg-1 to 4.8, 4.8 and 4.4 mg kg-1 after 30 d of remediation with MS and RC added at equal weights to give total dosage of 20, 40 wt% and 60 wt %, respectively. The leachable Pb further decreased to 1.7, 2.0 and 1.7 mg kg-1 after 180 d of remediation. Speciation analysis of the soil Pb indicated that the exchangeable and Fe-Mn oxide-bound Pb were transformed into residual Pb in the early stage of remediation, and the carbonate-bound Pb and organic matter-bound Pb were transformed into residual Pb in the later stage of remediation. As a result, Pb accumulation in mung beans decreased by 78.5%, 81.1% and 83.4% after 180 days of remediation. These results indicate that the leaching toxicity and phytotoxicity of Pb in remediated soils were significantly reduced, presenting a better and low-cost method for soil remediation.

Multiple heavy metals affect root response, iron plaque formation, and metal bioaccumulation of Kandelia obovata

Multiple heavy metal pollution in mangrove wetlands is serious. Kandelia obovata seedlings were cultured in pots in which lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were added separately and in combinations. The results showed that heavy metal stress improved the rate of root oxygen leakage, enhanced root activity, and reduced root porosity. The root under single heavy metal stress was impacted by the addition of other heavy metals, demonstrating antagonistic or synergistic effects. Iron plaque (IP) formation was improved under single Zn or Cu stress, and inhibited in binary stress of Pb + Cu. The adsorptions of IP on heavy metals in combined stress (Pb, 62–116 μg g⁻¹; Zn, 194–207 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 35–52 μg g⁻¹) were higher than that in single stress (Pb, 18 μg g⁻¹; Zn, 163 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 22 μg g⁻¹). K. obovata accumulated higher levels of heavy metals in root (Pb, 7–200 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 4–78 μg g⁻¹), compared with IP (Pb, 18–116 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 22–52 μg g⁻¹), stem (Pb, 3–7 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 9–17 μg g⁻¹), and leaf (Pb, 2–4 μg g⁻¹; Cu, 4–7 μg g⁻¹). Correlation analysis showed that single and binary stresses affected K. obovata, with more significant effect of trinary stress. Regression path analysis showed that multiple heavy metal stress firstly affected root, then indirectly contributed to IP formation, as well as heavy metal in IP and root; at last, heavy metal in IP directly contributed to heavy metal bioaccumulations in root.

Effect of mangrove restoration on sediment properties and bacterial community

Mangrove reconstruction is an efficient approach for mangrove conservation and restoration. The present study aimed to explore the effects of mangrove reconstruction on sediment properties and bacterial community. The results showed that mangrove restoration greatly promoted sediment fertility, whereas the improvements were more obvious induced by Kandelia obovata when compared to Avicennia marina. In all the samples, the dominant top5 bacterial group were Proteobacteria (48.31-54.52%), Planctomycetes (5.98-8.48%), Bacteroidetes (4.49-11.14%) and Acidobacteria (5.69-8.16%). As for the differences among the groups, the relative abundance of Chloroflexi was higher in the sediments of K. obovata, while Bacteroidetes was more abundant in A. marina group. Furthermore, the two bacterial genera (Rhodoplanes and Novosphingobium) were more dominant in the sediments of K. obovata, while the sediments of A. marina contained higher abundance of Vibrio and Marinobacterium. Besides, bacterial community was highly correlated with mangrove species and sediment property and nutrient status. The results of this study would provide a better understanding of the ecological benefits of mangroves and highlighted the information on biogeochemical processes driven by mangrove restoration and microorganisms.
