Abstract
Active principles in plant-based foods, especially staple fruits, such as bananas and plantains, possess inter-related anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, antioxidative, and neuromodulatory activities. Neurodegenerative diseases affect the functionality of the central and peripheral nervous system, with attendant cognitive deficits being hallmarks of these conditions. The dietary constitution of a wide range of bioactive compounds identified in this review further iterates the significance of the banana and plantain in compromising, halting, or preventing the pathological mechanisms of neurological disorders. The neuroprotective mechanisms of these biomolecules have been identified by using protein expression regulation and specific gene/pathway targeting, such as the nuclear and tumor necrosis factors, extracellular signal-regulated and mitogen-activated protein kinases, activator protein-1, and the glial fibrillary acidic protein. This review establishes the potential double-edged neuro-pharmacological fingerprints of banana and plantain fruits in their traditionally consumed pulp and less utilized peel component for human nutrition.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an important microelement with numerous positive effects on human health and diseases. It is important to specify that the status and consumption of Se are for a specific community as the levels of Se are extremely unpredictable between different populations and regions. Our existing paper was based on the impacts of Se on human health and disease along with data on the Se levels in Middle Eastern countries. Overall, the findings of this comprehensive review show that the consumption and levels of Se are inadequate in Middle Eastern nations. Such findings, together with the growing awareness of the importance of Se to general health, require further work primarily on creating an acceptable range of blood Se concentration or other measures to determine optimal Se consumption and, consequently, to guarantee adequate Se supplementation in populations at high risk of low Se intake.

Doxorubicin (Dox)-loaded
or selenium-substituted hydroxyapatite
(HA) has been developed to achieve anti-osteosarcoma or bone regeneration
in a number of studies. However, currently, there is a lack of studies
on the combination of Dox and selenium loading in/on HA and comparative
research studies on which form and size of HA are more suitable for
drug loading and release in the treatment osteogenesis after osteosarcoma
resection. Herein, selenium-doped rod-shaped nano-HA (n-HA) and spherical
mesoporous HA (m-HA) were successfully prepared. The doping efficiency
of selenium and the Dox loading capacity of selenium-doped HA with
different morphologies were studied. The release kinetics of Dox and
the selenium element in phosphate-buffered saline with different pH
values was also comparatively investigated. The drug loading results
showed that n-HA exhibited 3 times higher selenium doping amount than
m-HA, and the Dox entrapment efficiency of selenium-doped n-HA (0.1Se-n-HA)
presented 20% higher than that of selenium-doped m-HA (0.1Se-m-HA).
The Dox release behaviors of HA in two different morphologies showed
similar release kinetics, with almost the same Dox releasing ratio
but slightly more Dox releasing amount in selenium-doped HA than in
HA without selenium. The selenium release from selenium-doped n-HA-D
(0.1Se-n-HA-D) particles was 2 times as much as that of selenium-doped
m-HA-D (0.1Se-m-HA) particles. Our study indicated that n-HA loaded
with Dox and selenium may be a promising drug delivery strategy for
inhibition of osteosarcoma recurrence and promoting osteogenesis simultaneously.

Abstract
Background:
In Saudi Arabia, few studies have addressed iron, selenium and copper intake
and status. Most studies on iron have focused on iron deficiency anemia rather than the intake of iron.
Objective:
To assess the relative validity and repeatability of a Zinc-food Frequency Questionnaire
(FFQ) for estimating the intakes of iron, copper and selenium in Saudi adults.
Methods:
Ninety-seven Saudi adults participated in this study. All participants completed the FFQ1
and a three-days (3d) Food Record (FR) to assess validity. After one month, the FFQ was administered
again (FFQ2) to assess the repeatability.
Results:
Mean intakes of iron, copper and selenium estimated by FFQ1 were significantly higher
than those from the 3d FR. Estimated intakes of iron and selenium by both methods were significantly
correlated. The Bland-Altman analysis showed that the difference in iron intakes, as measured by
the two methods, was similar across the range of intakes while the difference in copper and selenium
intakes increased with an increase in the mean intake. No detectable differences were observed between
FFQ1 and FFQ2 in estimating iron, copper and selenium intakes. For all nutrients, the intakes
from both FFQs were highly correlated.
Conclusion:
The Zinc-FFQ showed reasonable relative validity and repeatability for estimating other
micronutrients, such as iron, copper and selenium.

Abstract
Selenium is a trace element essential to humans and forms complexes with proteins, which exert physiological functions in the body. In vitro studies suggested that selenium possesses anticancer effects and may be effective against osteosarcoma. This review aims to summarise current evidence on the anticancer activity of inorganic and organic selenium on osteosarcoma. Cellular studies revealed that inorganic and organic selenium shows cytotoxicity, anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects on various osteosarcoma cell lines. These actions may be mediated by oxidative stress induced by selenium compounds, leading to the activation of p53, proapoptotic proteins and caspases. Inorganic selenium is selective towards cancer cells, but can cause non-selective cell death at a high dose. This condition challenges the controlled release of selenium from biomaterials. Selenium treatment in animals inoculated with osteosarcoma reduced the tumour size, but did not eliminate the incidence of osteosarcoma. Only one study investigated the relationship between selenium and osteosarcoma in humans, but the results were inconclusive. In summary, although selenium may exert anticancer properties on osteosarcoma in experimental model systems, its effects in humans require further investigation.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an important trace element that should be present in the diet of all age groups to provide an adequate intake. Se is incorporated in 25 known selenoproteins, which mediate the biological effects of Se including, immune response regulation, maintenance of thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and anti-inflammatory actions. A balanced intake of Se is critical to achieve health benefits because depending on its status, Se has been found to play physiological roles or contribute to the pathophysiology of various diseases including, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disorders. Se status and intake are very important to be known for a specific population as the levels of Se are highly variable among different populations and regions. In the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, very little is known about the status of Se. Studies available show that Se status is widely variable with some countries being deficient, some over sufficient, and some sufficient. This variability was apparent even within the same country between regions. In this review, we summarized the key roles of Se in health and disease and discussed the available data on Se status and intake among countries of the MENA region.

Abstract
This is a systematic review of existing data on dietary selenium (Se) intake and status for various population groups in Europe (including the United Kingdom (UK)) and the Middle East. It includes English language systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional and case-control studies obtained through PUBMED searches from January, 2002, to November, 2014, for European data and from 1990 to November 2014, for Middle Eastern data. Reports were selected if they included data on Se intake and status. The search identified 19 European/UK studies and 15 investigations in the Middle East that reported Se intake and Se concentration in water and/or food and 48 European/UK studies and 44 investigations in the Middle East reporting Se status. Suboptimal Se status was reported to be widespread throughout Europe, the UK and the Middle East, and these results agreed with previous reports highlighting the problem. Eastern European countries had lower Se intake than Western European countries. Middle Eastern studies provided varying results, possibly due to varying food habits and imports in different regions and within differing socioeconomic groups. In conclusion, Se intake and status is suboptimal in European and Middle Eastern countries, with less consistency in the Middle East.
