A review of solid wastes-based stabilizers for remediating heavy metals co-contaminated soil: Applications and challenges

The remediation of heavy metals/metalloids (HMs) co-contaminated soil by solid wastes-based stabilizers (SWBS) has received major concern recently. Based on the literature reported in the latest years (2010-2023), this review systematically summarizes the different types of solid wastes (e.g., steel slag, coal fly ash, red mud, and sewage sludge, etc.) employed to stabilize HMs contaminated soil, and presents results from laboratory and field experiments. Firstly, the suitable solid wastes for soil remediation are reviewed, and the pros and cons are presented. Thereafter, the technical feasibility and economic benefit are evaluated for field application. Moreover, evaluation methods for remediation of different types of HMs-contaminated soil and the effects of SWBS on soil properties are summarized. Finally, due to the large specific surface, porous structure, and high reactivity, the SWBS can effectively stabilize HMs via adsorption, complexation, co/precipitation, ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, redox, and hydration process. Importantly, the environmental implications and long-term effectiveness associated with the utilization of solid wastes are highlighted, which are challenges for practical implementation of soil stabilization using SWBS, because the aging of soil/solid wastes has not been thoroughly investigated. Future attention should focus on modifying the SWBS and establishing an integrated long-term stability evaluation method.

Naturally manufactured biochar materials based sensor electrode for the electrochemical detection of polystyrene microplastics

In recent times, microplastics have become a disturbance to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the ingestion of these particles can have severe consequences for wildlife, aquatic organisms, and even humans. In this study, two types of biochars were manufactured through the carbonization of naturally found starfish (SF-1) and aloevera (AL-1). The produced biochars were utilized as sensing electrode materials for the electrochemical detection of ∼100 nm polystyrene microplastics (PS). SF-1 and AL-1 based biochars were thoroughly analyzed in terms of morphology, structure, and composition. The detection of microplastics over biochar based electrodes was carried out by electrochemical studies. From electrochemical results, SF-1 based electrode exhibited the detection efficiency of ∼0.2562 μA/μM∙cm2 with detection limit of ∼0.44 nM whereas, a high detection efficiency of ∼3.263 μA/μM∙cm2 was shown by AL-1 based electrode and detection limit of ∼0.52 nM for PS (100 nm) microplastics. Process contributed to enhancing the sensitivity of AL-1 based electrode might associate to the presence of metal-carbon framework over biochar's surfaces. The AL-1 biochar electrode demonstrated excellent repeatability and detection stability for PS microplastics, suggesting the promising potential of AL-1 biochar for electrochemical microplastics detection.

The effects of vermicompost and shell powder addition on Cd bioavailability, enzyme activity and bacterial community in Cd-contaminated soil: A field study

Cadmium (Cd) contamination has become serious in soil and in situ stabilization technology has been widely used for heavy metal remediation. A field study was conducted to determine the effect of amendments with the doses of 3 kg/m2, including single vermicompost (A1), a 95% vermicompost mixed with 5% shell powder composite (A2) and a 95% vermicompost mixed with 5% modified shell powder composite (A3), on the Cd bioavailability, enzyme activity and bacterial community in soil, and the experiment was conducted with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in a Cd-contaminated farmland soil. The results showed that the application of amendments increased the pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic matter (OM), available nutrients, catalase (S-CAT), invertase (S-SC) and urease (S-UE) activities in soil, while significantly reduced the Cd bioavailability with the lowest Cd bioavailability being observed in the soil with A3 application. The soil bacterial richness and diversity increased after amendments application, and the bacterial community was characterized by an increase in metal-tolerant bacteria but a decrease in Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes. In addition, the application of amendments significantly improved the growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and inhibited Cd accumulation in its edible parts, especially, the Cd content in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in soil with A3 application was below the limit of the National Food Safety Standard of China (maximum level ≤ 0.2 mg/kg). Thus, composite amendment obtained from vermicompost mixed with modified shell powder can be used as potential remediation material in Cd-contaminated soil. CAPSULE: Composite amendment obtained from vermicompost and modified shell powder had good effects on remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

A kinetic study on the mechanisms of metal leaching from the top surface layer of copper aluminates and copper ferrites

Recent studies have reported the potential copper immobilization in aluminates (CuAl₂O₄ and CuAlO₂) and ferrites (tetragonal CuFe₂O₄ and cubic CuFe₂O₄) and suggested a reliable method to stabilize metals in reusable ceramic products. In this study, copper immobilization effect was further analyzed in the leaching solutions with pH close to environmental conditions. The results from the chemical equilibrium model Visual MINTEQ illustrated that almost all copper, aluminum, and iron formed complexes with CH₃COO^- ions in the leachates. The dissolution behavior on sample surface was further explicated by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). The weight percentage of leached copper was lower than 0.1% even after 22-day leaching, indicating the successful copper stabilization in aluminates and ferrites. The results showed the highest copper concentrations in CuAlO₂ leachates and the smallest leached copper amount from tetragonal CuFe₂O₄, respectively. The incongruent dissolution with Al-O or Fe-O bonds still remaining on the solid surface may be beneficial for preventing further leaching of copper. Furthermore, the modeling of reaction kinetics found that copper leaching from the CuAl₂O₄ and CuAlO₂ obeyed the second-order reaction with correlation coefficients higher than 0.99. Moreover, the shrinking core model was chosen to analyze the leaching mechanisms of both CuFe₂O₄ ferrites, and the diffusion through product layer model acted as the rate-controlling step in their leaching process.

Stabilization of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in contaminated rice paddy soil using starfish: A preliminary study

Lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) contaminated rice paddy soil was stabilized using natural (NSF) and calcined starfish (CSF). Contaminated soil was treated with NSF in the range of 0-10 wt% and CSF in the range of 0-5 wt% and cured for 28 days. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test was used to evaluate effectiveness of starfish treatment. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analyses were conducted to investigate the mechanism responsible for effective immobilization of Pb and Zn. Experimental results suggest that NSF and CSF treatments effectively immobilize Pb and Zn in treated rice paddy soil. TCLP levels for Pb and Zn were reduced with increasing NSF and CSF dosage. Comparison of the two treatment methods reveals that CSF treatment is more effective than NSF treatment. Leachability of the two metals is reduced approximately 58% for Pb and 51% for Zn, upon 10 wt% NSF treatment. More pronounced leachability reductions, 93% for Pb and 76% for Zn, are achieved upon treatment with 5 wt% CSF. Sequential extraction results reveal that NSF and CSF treatments of contaminated soil generated decrease in exchangeable/weak acid Pb and Zn soluble fractions, and increase of residual Pb and Zn fractions. Results for the SEM-EDX sample treated with 5 wt% CSF indicate that effective Pb and Zn immobilization is most probably associated with calcium silicate hydrates (CSHs) and calcium aluminum hydrates (CAHs).
