Health risk assessment of heavy metal concentration in muscle of Chelon auratus and Chelon saliens from the southern Caspian Sea

Spatiotemporal changes of pelagic food webs investigated by environmental DNA metabarcoding and connectivity analysis

Environmental DNA metabarcoding (eDNA metaB) is fundamental for monitoring marine biodiversity and its spread in coastal ecosystems. We applied eDNA metaB to seawater samples to investigate the spatiotemporal variability of plankton and small pelagic fish, comparing sites with different environmental conditions across a coast-to-offshore gradient at river mouths along the Campania coast (Italy) over 2 years (2020-2021). We found a marked seasonality in the planktonic community at the regional scale, likely owing to the hydrodynamic connection among sampling sites, which was derived from numerical simulations. Nonetheless, spatial variability among plankton communities was detected during summer. Overall, slight changes in plankton and fish composition resulted in the potential reorganization of the pelagic food web at the local scale. This work supports the utility of eDNA metaB in combination with hydrodynamic modelling to study marine biodiversity in the water column of coastal systems. Pollution of four heavy metal elements in dried chili peppers in Guizhou Province and its health risk assessment

This study aimed to evaluate arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) levels in dried chili peppers from nine districts in Guizhou Province. These heavy metals, widely dispersed and capable of transferring to crops, pose potential health risks to humans. The assessment included modeling daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), total target hazard index (TTHQ), and target carcinogenic risk (TCR) to assess health risks across different population groups. Results showed chromium (0.9540 ± 0.301 mg/kg) and lead (0.8949 ± 0.266 mg/kg) had the highest concentrations, followed by arsenic (0.3287 ± 0.093 mg/kg) and cadmium (0.0627 ± 0.017 mg/kg). Children exhibited higher EDI values than adults, indicating greater health risks from dried chili pepper consumption at equivalent levels. THQ and TTHQ values were below 1 across all regions, indicating no significant health risks associated with dried chili pepper consumption. Similarly, TCR values were below 10-4 for all nine regions, indicating an acceptable level of carcinogenic risk. Overall, consuming dried chili peppers in Guizhou Province poses an acceptable health risk, but caution is advised, especially for children, to limit heavy metal exposure.

Metals concentration and human health risk assessment in some fish species from the southern Caspian Sea

The main objectives of this study were to determine the mercury concentration in four species of valuable and widely consumed fish from the Caspian Sea, to assess the health risk due to their consumption. The average mercury concentrations for Chelon saliens, Chelon auratus, Acipenser persicus and Acipenser stellatus were 32.72, 39.51, 166.87 and 81.87 μg g-1 dw, respectively. There were correlations between the mercury concentrations in the muscle of Chelon saliens and morphological parameters, but these correlations were not observed in Chelon auratus. Our comparison of the mercury values obtained in all the samples with the recommended international standards, as well as the Hazard Quotients values, indicated that there is no potential risk for the health of consumers due to exposure to mercury from consuming these fish.

Progress in quality control, detection techniques, speciation and risk assessment of heavy metals in marine traditional Chinese medicine

Marine traditional Chinese medicines (MTCMs) hold a significant place in the rich cultural heritage in China. It plays an irreplaceable role in addressing human diseases and serves as a crucial pillar for the development of China's marine economy. However, the rapid pace of industrialization has raised concerns about the safety of MTCM, particularly in relation to heavy metal pollution. Heavy metal pollution poses a significant threat to the development of MTCM and human health, necessitating the need for detection analysis and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM. In this paper, the current research status, pollution situation, detection and analysis technology, removal technology and risk assessment of heavy metals in MTCM are discussed, and the establishment of a pollution detection database and a comprehensive quality and safety supervision system for MTCM is proposed. These measures aim to enhance understanding of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM. It is expected to provide a valuable reference for the control of heavy metals and harmful elements in MTCM, as well as the sustainable development and application of MTCM.

Health risk assessment of some heavy metals detected in edible fishes of Gorgan Bay, Caspian Sea (Iran), for human

Just recently, heavy metals have been dramatically detected in aquatic animals, especially in fishes; hence, documented method to assess their health risks for humans who eat these contaminated fishes could be helpful. For the sake of this aim, the health risk assessment of four heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, lead, and copper in three main edible fishes caught from Gorgan bay was studied. Mullet, roach, and common carp have been caught randomly in winter and spring of 2021 from three different fishing sites of Gorgan bay, including Miankaleh wetland, estuary of Qaresu River, and mouth of Chapaghli canal. Heavy metal measurement has been done with MOOPAM method, and risk assessment of fish consumption was assessed by estimated daily (EDI) and weekly intakes (EWI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and target cancer risk (TCR) indices. In this study, estimated daily intake (EDI) was much lower than the tolerable daily intake. Although TCR of cadmium within all fishes and arsenic in two fishes were more than acceptable value, THQ and HI values were less than one, and TCR of lead as well as copper was lower than the critical values, which suggests heavy metals of the Gorgan bay have no serious risks to consumer health.
