Abstract
Environmental studies in Northern Poland are example of the functioning of ecophysiological relationships under anthropogenic impact. The aim of our studies was to investigate sex-dependent effects on the alterations in the concentration of chemical elements in soil samples collected from habitats of feral pigeon Columba livia f. urbana from Northern Poland, as well as feathers, biomarkers of oxidative stress, antioxidant defense, and total cholinesterase activity in tissues (liver, kidney, brain). Concentration of Si, Zn, and Pb in feathers of pigeons was significant. The levels of Si and Zn were higher in feathers of females from non-polluted, while higher Pb levels were found only in females from polluted areas (p = 0.000). This was confirmed by MANOVA of biomarkers of antioxidant defense, elements concentration, and revealing the order of effects: tissue type > environment > sex. Erythrocytes of males living in polluted areas were more fragile to hemolytic agents resulting in a higher percentage of hemolyzed erythrocytes. The effects of polluted environment on the level of carbonyl derivatives of oxidatively modified proteins compared to the effects of sex were more pronounced in the case of kidney (p = 0.000) and hepatic tissues (p = 0.000). Polluted areas were associated with significant increase in SOD activity in the brain and hepatic tissues of pigeons (p = 0.000). Health status of feral pigeons is significantly different in conditions of environmental destabilization.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is a metal that can produces irreversible damage in living organisms. Some studies had reported that Pb produces histophysiological alterations in the digestive system (mainly liver) of birds; however, the effect of this metal on small intestine has not been fully examined. Additionally, little information is available on Pb disturbances in native birds of South America. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different Pb exposure times on blood δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD) activity and on the histological and morphometric characteristics of the digestive system (liver and proximal intestine) of eared doves (Zenaida auriculata). A decrease of the blood δ-ALAD activity, dilatation of blood vessels and leukocyte infiltrates in intestinal submucosa and muscular layers, and reduction of the enterocyte nuclear diameter and Lieberkühn crypts area were observed. In liver were noted steatosis, proliferation of bile ducts, dilated sinusoids, leukocyte infiltrates, and melanomacrophage centers. The portal tract area and the thickness of the portal vein wall were increased. In conclusion, the results showed that Pb produces histological and morphometric alterations on the liver and small intestine according to the exposure time, which should be considered when the dangerousness of environmental pollutants is evaluated in wild animals.

Abstract
Biomonitoring of synanthropic species provides evidence about effects of the pollution in human environment. In the present study, tibia and tarsometatarsal bones were extracted from feral pigeons (Columba livia), found either deceased, or experimentally captured in the lofts of houses in Bratislava, Slovakia. Concentrations of mercury (tarsometatarsus), lead, iron, and zinc (tibia) were analyzed, along with sex and plumage pattern, wing, and tarsometatarsal length. In order to estimate age, lines of arrested growth (LAGs) were used. Results show no significant differences in heavy metal accumulation depending on sex or plumage pattern. However, age-related tarsometatarsus length was correlated to Hg, Pb, and Fe bone level accumulation. Thus, bigger or older pigeons with longer tarsometatarsal bones had higher Hg, Pb, and Fe concentrations. Higher heavy metal concentrations (mainly Fe and Zn) were also present in bones of older deceased individuals with completed LAG. These findings point to chronic accumulation of heavy metals in feral pigeons during their life in polluted environments.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is a toxic element and environmental pollutant. Pb toxicity and antagonistic effect of selenium (Se) on Pb have been deeply studied in mammals. The testis is one of the target organs of Pb in birds. The aim of this study was to investigate the mitigating effect of Se on Pb toxicity in chicken testes by determining messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of 5 heat shock proteins (HSPs) and 25 selenoproteins. Sixty male chickens (7-day-old) were randomly divided into the control group, the Se group, the Pb group, and the Pb + Se group, and were fed for 90 days. The feeding methods of chickens were as follows: The control group was fed drinking water and commercial diet (0.49 mg/kg Se). Lead acetate was added into the drinking water (350 mg/L Pb). Sodium selenite was added into the commercial diet (1 mg/kg Se). Multivariate correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to define the relationships among all the measured factors and the most important parameters that could be used as key factors, respectively. The results indicated that Se decreased the increase of mRNA expressions of all the HSPs and increased the decrease of mRNA expressions of all the selenoproteins induced by Pb in the chicken testes. HSP70 may be a biomarker of Pb poisoning in the chicken testes. Se alleviated Pb-induced toxicity in the chicken testes through regulating mRNA expressions of HSPs and selenoproteins.

Abstract
Mercury was determined in the tissues (feather, lung, liver, and kidney) of homing pigeons (Columbia livia domestica) from both the USA (Glendora, California and Midland, Texas) and China (Beijing and Chengdu). Among these cities, mercury concentrations were greatest in samples from Beijing, which is known to have relatively high levels of airborne mercury. Among the tissues, levels were highest in the feather, followed by kidney, liver, and lung. There was no significant trend for mercury with pigeon age, weight, or sex, except for mercury with bird weight in the lung of the Beijing samples. Overall, the data adds to the growing body of evidence that the homing pigeon can serve as a useful biomonitor in urban areas.

Abstract
Background Herbaceous plants are common vegetal species generally exposed, for a limited period of time, to bioavailable environmental pollutants. Heavy metals contamination is the most common form of environmental pollution. Herbaceous plants have never been used as natural bioindicators of environmental pollution, in particular to monitor the amount of heavy metals in soil. In this study, we aimed at assessing the usefulness of using three herbaceous plants (Plantago major L., Taraxacum officinale L. and Urtica dioica L.) and one leguminous (Trifolium pratense L.) as alternative indicators to evaluate soil pollution by heavy metals. Results We employed Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to assess the concentration of selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cr and Pd) in soil and plants and we employed statistical analyses to describe the linear correlation between the accumulation of some heavy metals and selected vegetal species. We found that the leaves of Taraxacum officinale L. and Trifolium pratense L. can accumulate Cu in a linearly dependent manner with Urtica dioica L. representing the vegetal species accumulating the highest fraction of Pb. Conclusions In this study we demonstrated that common plants can be used as an alternative analytical tool for monitoring selected heavy metals in soil.

Abstract
Pulmonary toxicity of lead was studied in rats after an intraperitoneal administration of lead acetate at a dose of 25 mg/kg. Three consecutive days of treatment increased lead content in the whole blood to 2.1 µg/dl and in lung homogenate it attained 9.62 µg/g w.w. versus control values of 0.17 µg/dl and 0.78 µg/g w.w., respectively. At the ultrastructural level, the effects of lead toxicity were observed in lung capillaries, interstitium, epithelial cells and alveolar lining layer. Accumulation of aggregated platelets, leucocytic elements and monocytes was found within capillaries. Interstitium comprised a substantial number of collagen, elastin filaments and lipofibroblasts. Lamellar bodies of type II pneumocytes contained phospolipid lamellae, which stratified into an irregular arrangement. Pulmonary alveoli were filled with macrophages. The extracellular lining layer of lung alveoli was partially destroyed. This study provided evidence that acute lead intoxication affects the whole lung parenchyma and by impairing production of the surfactant might disturb the regular respiratory function.

Abstract
This study evaluates the usefulness of homing pigeons as a biomonitor of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban environments. The mean concentrations of total PAHs in liver and lung tissues were greater in pigeons from Beijing compared to pigeons from Chengdu, however, this difference was only statistically significant for PAH concentrations in liver tissue (P < 0.05). Similarly, the severity of anthracosis or pneumoconiosis in lung tissue and hepatitis in liver tissue was greater in pigeons from Beijing compared to pigeons from Chengdu. Low molecular weight PAHs dominated the contribution of individual PAHs in both tissues. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for most low and moderate molecular weights PAHs in liver and for some low and high molecular weights PAHs in lung between the two cites. The profile patterns of individual PAHs were similar between lung tissue of pigeons and between local ambient airs in summer for both cities, whereas the profile patterns between liver tissue and pigeon food were less similar. These data suggest that homing pigeons may be of value as a biomonitor of environmental pollution in urban areas.
