Health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil samples from an abandoned industrial waste dumpsite in Ibadan, Nigeria

Systematic literature review of heavy metal contamination of the Nigerian environment from e-waste management: Associated health and carcinogenic risk assessment

E-waste -the aftermath of large amount of electrical and electronic equipment ferried into Africa from which Nigeria receives a significant chunk, is composed of components known to be hazardous to health. Composition of series of heavy metals (HMs) in e-waste is traceable to many health conditions including cancer which is hitherto incompletely understood. This study harmonizes primary data on HMs from e-waste in different Nigerian environmental media including the air, soil, surface dust, water and plant. We estimated the possible health implications, single and aggregative soil and water pollution indices both in adult and children categories, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks secondary to HM exposure and mapped out the possible mechanism of carcinogenesis. Analysis showed that soil, water, surface dust and plant matrices in Nigerian environment are variedly but considerably contaminated with combination of HMs. The significantly high values of the hazard quotient and hazard index of both water and surface dust matrices are indicative of adverse health effect of the non-carcinogenic risk. The highest HQ is generated by Pb and Cr through dermal exposure to soil and surface dust with mean values of 1718.48, 1146.14, 1362.10 and 1794.61 respectively among Nigerian children followed by the oral exposure. This pattern of observation is similar to that obtained for adult category. HI due to Pb and Cr in soil constitutes the highest HI (2.05E+03 and 1.18E+03 respectively) followed by surface dust. However, this study precipitates the observation that children are more at health risk than adults in contaminated environment. Carcinogenic risk also follows the same pattern of expression in the Nigerian environment. We conclude that exposure to e-waste poses significant carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks and the induction of toxicity may be mediated via DNA damage, oxidative stress and inflammatory/immune cells dysfunction in Nigerian environment.

A comparative study on metal pollution from surface dust of informal and formal e-waste recycling sectors in national capital region of New Delhi and associated risk assessment

Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) is considered as resource and secondary source of metals, and is being recycled for recovery of precious and base metals. But the processes of recycling and the waste generated during e-waste recycling in informal and formal sectors contribute toxic metals in to the environment. This work aimed to compare the environmental and health impacts of informal and formal e-waste recycling facilities at New Delhi and Bhiwadi Industrial area in India, respectively. Here, concentrations of Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V, Zn, and Ag, and As in surface dust collected from informal and formal recycling sectors and their associated pollution, human health and ecological risk are presented. Metal concentrations were higher than the background levels in both sectors. Contamination factor (Cf), contamination degree (Cdeg), pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EnF) of metals indicated severe pollution levels in both sectors. However, contamination in informal sector was comparatively higher than the formal sector. Sampling sites in both sectors had very high ecological risk. Storage, dismantling/shredding and recycling techniques were contributors of metals in surface dust in formal sector whereas fumes deposition, re-suspension, and dried by-products during acid bath treatments were additional sources in informal sector. Metal pollution depends on metal(s), e-waste type(s) and recycling sector(s). Total non-carcinogenic health risk due to metals was 6.5E+00 and 6.0E+01 and 6.2E+00 and 5.5E+01 in adult and children in informal and formal sectors, respectively. Total carcinogenic risk was 3.3E-03 and 7.2E-03 in informal and formal sectors, respectively. Ingestion was major pathways of metals followed by dermal and inhalation and children were more prone to risk compared to adults. Formal sectors too cause metal pollution but to lesser degree compared to informal. More effective pollution control measures are required in formal sector to control environmental pollution.

Concentrations and health risk appraisal of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds in soils of automobile mechanic villages in Ogun State, Nigeria

This report presents the findings of the concentrations, distributions and health risks assessment of heavy metals (HMs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in topsoils of two typical automobile mechanic villages (MVs) situated within Ogun State, Nigeria. One of the MVs is located in basement complex terrain (Abeokuta), while the second is in the sedimentary formation (Sagamu). Ten composite samples were collected at depth of 0-30 cm with the aid of soil auger from spent oil-contaminated spots within the two MVs. The chemical parameters of interest were Pb, Cd, benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) as well as oil and grease (O&G). In addition, soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC) and particle size distribution were also evaluated in order to find out their impacts on assessed soil pollutants. Results revealed that the soils in both MVs are of sandy loam texture, slight acidic to neutral pH, mean CEC < 15 cmol/kg and mean EC > 100 μS/cm. The mean concentration of each of analyzed HMs and VOCs in soils from the two MVs was < 5 mg/kg, while the mean values of TPH and O&G content were > 50 mg/kg. The mean Cd values in soils of both MVs were higher than the national soil screening level of 0.8 mg/kg, but lower than the Canadian and Italian guidelines. There is no significant correlation between each of HMs/VOCs and any of assessed soil physicochemical variables. The non-cancer risk expressed in terms of hazard index (HI) was > 1 via oral ingestion route for adults and children at the two MVs, indicating adverse non-carcinogenic health risk. The HI > 1 value was obtained for adults only through the dermal absorption pathway in Abeokuta MV. However, HI values for the two age groups at the two MVs via inhalation route were < 1, indicating no likelihood of any non-carcinogenic effects via the breathing exposure. The potential of non-cancer risk via oral ingestion route in both MVs was derived from the contributive ratios of HMs and VOCs in the order: Cd > benzene > Pb > toluene. The carcinogenic risk (CR) values due to ingested Cd, benzene and Pb for both age groups at the two MVs exceed the safe limit range of 10-6 to 10-4. Cadmium, benzene and lead made considerable contributions to the estimation of CR through dermal exposure for adults only in Abeokuta MV. The CR values via inhalation pathway for adults and children in both MVs were within the threshold range. Artisans and children should circumvent accidental ingestion of contaminated soils in addition to wearing of protective clothes during routine vehicle maintenance activities.

Trace metal geochemistry sediments from the Dibamba River, SW Cameroon: Implication for heavy metal assessment and origin

Sediment quality and trace metal accumulation are two of the most pressing issues facing the aquatic ecosystem around the world. Twenty-four (24) samples of stream sediments were collected along the Dibamba River, in the economic and industrial capital of Cameroon, to judge the trace metal levels in this river flowing near the city of Douala. Trace metal concentrations were disclosed with an ICP-MS on two different grain size fractions (very fine-grained sand and clay). The sediments indicate possible adverse effects of trace metals on surrounding biota as elements like Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Hg show positive enrichment of greater than 1 when compared to background values from the upper continental crust (UCC) and sediment quality factors such as TEL (threshold effects level), PEL (probable effects level), ERL (effects range low), and ERM (effects range medium) values. The sediments show values of Degree of contamination (DC = 2-4), Pollution load index (PI = 1-2), and individual potential risk (EI = 92-219) indicating moderate pollution and ecological risk. Statistical and multivariate analyses point to both anthropogenic and geogenic sources for the heavy metals in the Dibamba stream sediments. The geogenic origin of the heavy metals is linked to the weathering of gneiss and migmatite found in the river banks. This study found low to mild levels of metal pollution and toxicity in the sediment, but it also warned that the continued development of nearby industries and businesses, the provision of transportation services, and waste disposal activities could result in a gradual outflow and accumulation of metals in the sediment, endangering the aquatic ecosystem.

Geophysical and geochemical study of the contaminant impact of Oke-Tage solid waste dumpsite, Southwestern Nigeria

The physicochemical properties of groundwater, geochemical characteristics and subsurface formation of the Oke-Tage waste dumpsite soil material were assessed to determine the impact of the leachate generated from the waste dumpsite on the quality of the groundwater within the study area. Water samples collected from hand-dug wells were analyzed to determine groundwater quality, while soil samples were examined for their geochemical characteristics. Ten Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) surveys were carried out with an electrode spacing (AB/2) increasing from 1 to 200 m. Also, four 2D electrical resistivity profilings were done using the dipole-dipole configuration. The hydro-chemical analysis showed an elevated Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) concentration above the maximum permissible limits. The physicochemical results indicated that the Electrical Conductivity (EC) ranged from 1900 to 3670 µS/m, while Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) ranged from 585 to 620 mg/L. The health risk assessment showed no significant health risks associated with exposure to the metals due to HI values less than 1. Based on the VES result, four geoelectric layers comprising topsoil, weathered layer, fractured basement, and fresh basement were identified. The 2D resistivity structures revealed that the topsoil and weathered layers practically merged and are characterized by relatively low resistivity (< 30 Ωm) beneath the dump site. The study concluded that the groundwater and soil in the vicinity of the investigated Oke-Tage waste dumpsite had been negatively impacted to levels that called for caution especially using the water for regular potability purposes.

Contamination Assessment and Potential Human Health Risks of Heavy Metals in Urban Soils from Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA

Heavy metal (HM) pollution of soil is an increasingly serious problem worldwide. The current study assessed the metal levels and ecological and human health risk associated with HMs in Grand Forks urban soils. A total 40 composite surface soil samples were investigated for Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Hg, Cr, Cd and Tl using microwave-assisted HNO3-HCl acid digestion and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. The enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), ecological risk and potential ecological risk index were used for ecological risk assessment. The park soils revealed the following decreasing trend for metal levels: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Co > Cd > Tl > Hg. Based on mean levels, all the studied HMs except As and Cr were lower than guideline limits set by international agencies. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Tl may originate from natural sources, while Hg, Pb, As and Cd may come from anthropogenic/mixed sources. The Igeo results showed that the soil was moderately polluted by As and Cd and, based on EF results, As and Cd exhibited significant enrichment. The contamination factor analysis revealed that Zn and Pb showed moderate contamination, Hg exhibited low to moderate contamination and As and Cd showed high contamination in the soil. Comparatively higher risk was noted for children over adults and, overall, As was the major contributor (>50%), followed by Cr (>13%), in the non-carcinogenic risk assessment. Carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that As and Cr pose significant risks to the populations associated with this urban soil. Lastly, this study showed that the soil was moderately contaminated by As, Cd, Pb and Hg and should be regularly monitored for metal contamination.

Utilization and life cycle assessment of low activity solid waste as cementitious materials: A case study of titanium slag and granulated blast furnace slag

The dumping of cement production and industrial solid waste can cause severe environmental impact. In order to reduce the environmental impact of cement production and reasonably dispose of solid waste, a new type of cementing material was developed using industrial solid waste as raw materials. It solves the problem that low activity solid waste is difficult to reuse and makes up for the less research, which considered both preparation and environmental evaluation. The orthogonal tests of cement mortar strength as well as life cycle assessment were carried out. The results from variance and range analyses of the orthogonal tests revealed that the fraction of solid waste mainly affected the compressive strength of the solid waste cement mortar, and its specific surface area primarily influenced the flexural strength. After curing for 28 days, the compressive and flexural strength values of the developed cementing material were 40.6 MPa and 8.6 MPa, respectively. The results of life cycle impact assessment indicated that the developed solid waste cement had more environmental advantages than ordinary cement in 18 midpoints environmental impact types, and could diminish environmental impact by 16.1 % on the whole. The solid waste cement has achieved great environmental gains in the human toxicity, natural land transformation, metal depletion, climate change and other environmental impact categories. In addition, the clinker calcination, transportation and material mining were identified as critical processes responsible for the human toxicity, natural land transformation and metal depletion. Through sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, the development of the solid waste cement was proved to be the most effective method to decrease the environmental impact of cement. Finally, the methods of further reducing the environmental impact of cement were proposed.

Bioavailability and health risk of toxic heavy metals (As, Hg, Pb and Cd) in urban soils: A Monte Carlo simulation approach

Toxic heavy metals pollution in urban soil has become a major global issue due to its adverse effects on the environment and human health. In this paper, 26 soil samples were analyzed to assess the speciation, bioavailability and human health risk of Arsenic (As), Mercury (Hg), Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) in urban soils of a heavy industrial city in NE China by using a Monte Carlo simulation approach. The results showed that As, Hg, Pb and Cd concentrations in the soil all exceed the corresponding background value of study area. Mercury displays the highest value of geo-accumulation index (Igeo), followed by Cd, Pb and As. The pollution load index (PLI) value (>2) indicates a moderate pollution level in the study area. The chemical speciation of HMs mainly exists in residual fraction except Cd. The probabilistic health risk assessment demonstrated that the mean values of Total Carcinogenic Risk (TCR) and Hazard Index (HI) calculated with total concentration are at the unacceptable level, with a higher risk to children than adults. However, the mean values calculated with bioavailable fraction are all within the acceptable level. The mean value of TCR and HI obtained by bioavailable fraction is about 96% and 95% lower than that obtained by total concentration, respectively. Thus, this study suggested that the bioavailable fraction of HMs is a more reliable parameter for health risk assessment, while the total concentration of HMs can overestimate the true risk. The results of this study provide some insight into the speciation, bioavailability and health risks of toxic heavy metals in urban soils in those heavy industrial cities.

Heavy metals research in Nigeria: a review of studies and prioritization of research needs

Nigeria is experiencing continuous economic and industrial transformations, typical of many developing nations. In addition to its well-established oil industry, which is infamous for exuding various kinds of pollutants, there are increased mining operations, indiscriminate disposal and burning of wastes, illegal oil refinery and terroristic insurgency, all poised to increase the levels of heavy metal contaminants in the Nigerian environment. A recent revelation indicates that about 2 million people in South-western Nigeria alone could potentially be poisoned by lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg), emanating from illegal mining operations. This further underscores the importance of investigations of toxic trace metal levels in the country. The current review of 148 research articles was conducted to provide an understanding of the scope of heavy metals research in Nigeria and to prioritize needed research. The review recognized that the scope of heavy metals studies has been wide, covering matrices such as cosmetics, human blood, hair, medicines, foods, beverages, water, air, soil and crude oil. However, important toxic metals, especially mercury (Hg), arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb), are largely under-investigated. Also, there is a need for more studies to be conducted in the northern part of the country. Furthermore, studies need to focus on marine environments rather than the freshwater ecosystems alone. Techniques such as the inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analyses are herein recommended to bridge the data gap and to overcome limitations in trace metals analyses in the Nigerian total environment.

Heavy metals concentrations and naturally occurring radionuclides in soils affected by and around a solid waste dumpsite in Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria

The presence of heavy metals and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) in high concentrations in soils can be hazardous to exposed humans. This study is aimed at measuring the concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cd, Co, and Cr) and activity concentration of ²³²Th, ²³⁸U, and ⁴⁰K in soils affected by and around a solid waste dumpsite in Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria. Atomic absorption spectrometry and gamma-ray spectrometric techniques were used to determine the concentrations of metals and NORMs, respectively. Possible environmental impact of the heavy metal content and the probable radiological hazard by the NORMs to the general public were assessed. The calculated pollution indices reported in this work for Co, Cr, Pb, and Ni show low pollution status. Geoaccumulation indices for Cu, Zn, and Cd indicated that the area under study is strongly contaminated by these metals. Evaluated ecological risk index narrowed down Cd as the poisonous metal with high concentration. The measured radionuclides' mean activity concentrations and the evaluated mean of radium equivalent and absorbed dose rate values are higher than the recommended safe limit, an indication of possible radiological hazard. The principal factor analysis results explained 76% of the collection of data and described chips of galvanized/chrome metals, scrap metals, waste from electronics, Cr, and Cd-containing waste as sources of the heavy metals. The practice of land cultivation around the dumpsite should be deterred to prevent the transportation of these vicious heavy metals into the food chain.

Human health risk assessment of arsenic and trace metals in atmospheric dust of Arak industrial area, Iran

In order to investigate concentrations, variability, sources, and human health risk of trace elements, 38 atmospheric dust samples were collected around Arak industrial area. The average concentrations of Cd~Zn, As, and Pb were 3.3, 2.5, and 2.4 times higher than the corresponding geochemical background, respectively, while concentrations of Co, Cu, Ni, and Hg were lower. Based on geo-accumulation index (I_geo), trace elements were classified between practically uncontaminated to moderate contaminated levels. The potential risk (RI) map showed that about 86% of the study area for all trace elements was in the moderate risk class. According to the results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, four factors were extracted for trace elements, including industrial sources, natural sources, mining, and transportation, that contributed about 30, 27, 26, and 17% to pollution of the area, respectively. The carcinogenic risks for inhalation exposure to Cd, As, Ni, and Co were lower than the permissible risk limit than the EPA recommend (10^-6), indicating an acceptable level of risk. Results of the health risk evaluation indicated that the non-carcinogenic health risk (i.e., hazard quotient, HQ) for children and adults decrease following: As > Pb > Ni > Zn > Cd > Cu > Co > Hg. When excluding As, the hazard index (HI) was lower than the safe level (HI < 1) for all the trace elements, whereas HQ values of As for children and adults were 17.1 and 1.6, respectively, indicating a potential risk for children. In sum, several remedial actions to eliminate or to reduce the dust pollution are urgently required in the industrial area of Arak.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals exposure via consumption of crops grown in phosphogypsum-contaminated soils

The management of phosphogypsum (PG) heap, located south of the Sfax city in Tunisia, has been going on for decades. But dumping this solid waste still poses environmental problems. Even though valorized as amendment to agriculture soils, the sanitary impact of this practice is not seriously considered. To assess the risk of the transference of contaminants from PG to agricultural soil-plants food chain, a wild plant species Salicornia arabica grown in PG-contaminated field and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and oat (Avena sativa) grown in laboratory using different rates (10, 20 and 30%) of PG amendment, were tested. The cadmium, lead, chromium, nickel, copper and zinc concentrations in soils and plants were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry and by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, respectively. Measurements showed that Ni, Cu and Pb levels in the amended soils were below international standards except for Cd and Cr which exceeded Chinese, FAO/WHO and European allowable standard limits. Gathered results showed that the more the PG rate increases, the more the bioconcentration factors of heavy metals increased in plants, particularly in the roots. This is a prospective study assuming direct or indirect exposure scenario of different human cohorts by consuming varied common food stuffs. The Human Exposure to Soil Pollutants evaluation and United State Environment Protection Agency models were adopted for the hazard quotient calculation to assess the acceptability of sanitary risk related to each metal. The direct and indirect health risk assessments varied in the decreasing order: children, adolescents and then adults. Therefore, the PG amendment must not exceed the rate of 10%.

Modelling the dynamics of the cancer risk due to potentially toxic elements in agricultural soils, in the upper Crocodile River catchment, North-West province, South Africa

Contaminated agricultural soil with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) poses a threat to food safety and can adversely affect human health. This study evaluates the potential health risk caused by PTEs contamination in cultivated soils and the possible related health effect. Sixty-four (64) soil samples from cultivated soils before crop cultivation and post-crop were harvested and twenty-four (24) soil samples from a natural game reserve park were collected and. The PTEs were analysed using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the following elements As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, Al, and Fe. The contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), hazard quotient (HQ), and hazard index (HI) was calculated to assess the human health risks for the different pathways to the exposed population. A carcinogenic probabilistic risk model based on the mathematical derivation and PTEs transmission pathways is presented. The mean concentrations of the PTEs in the cultivated soil varied in order of Al > Fe > Mn > Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Cd. Cr and Ni concentrations in all the cultivated soils were found to be higher than the Canadian guidelines and the Finnish permissible threshold guidelines for agricultural. The CF in the soil indicates extreme contamination suggestion an ecotoxicological effect. The PLI value also suggests that the soils have undergone some form of deterioration, particularly with Cr and Ni. The ingestion seems to be the major pathway followed by dermal to children. The HQ and HI values for the children were > 1 indicating an adverse health effect for the children residing around the cultivated fields. The simulated results indicate that the percentage of the affected humans that may be consuming crop derived from the contaminated soil increases by a factor of 2 as the contamination factor increases. The transmission compartments can be used as an effective measure in which mitigation can be effectively used.

Ecological and Health Risks Assessment of Potentially Toxic Metals and Metalloids Contaminants: A Case Study of Agricultural Soils in Qatar

In recent years, Qatar has witnessed exponential growth in the human population, urbanization, and increased anthropogenic activities, including agriculture. Potentially toxic environmental contaminants, including metals and metalloids, are commonly found in emerging economies. At high concentrations, elements such as As, Cr, and Ni can be hazardous and may lead to various health problems in humans, including cancer. The current study measured As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn concentrations in agricultural soils. Pollution levels and potential negative impacts on human and environmental health were determined using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standard methodologies. According to the study’s findings, the studied element concentrations descended in the following order: Zn > Cr > V > Ni > As > Cu > Pb > Cd. Of these, As (27.6 mg/kg), Cr (85.7 mg/kg), Ni (61.9 mg/kg), and Zn (92.3 mg/kg) concentrations were higher than average world background levels. Each of these elements also had an enrichment factor (EF > 1), indicating their anthropogenic origin. The combined pollution load index (PLI > 1) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) range values of −0.2–2.5 further indicated that the soil was up to 58% polluted. However, the ecological risk factor (Er ≤ 40.6) and potential ecological risk index (PERI = 79.6) suggested low ecological risk. A human health risk evaluation showed that only As, with a hazard index (HI) of 1.3, posed a noncarcinogenic risk to infants. Additionally, As, Cr, and Ni, with total carcinogenic risk (TCR) values of 1.18 × 10⁻⁴ and 2.06 × 10⁻⁴ for adults and children, respectively, proved carcinogenic to both age groups. The elements’ carcinogenic risk (CR) potential descended in the following order: Ni > As > Cr. Additionally, for both adults and children, oral ingestion is the most likely exposure pathway. Our findings support the need for closer monitoring of potentially toxic metals and metalloids levels in cultivated soils and farm produce in Qatar. Reducing the elements’ bioavailability in soil and developing innovative remediation technologies is needed to limit potential risks to human health. Further studies on As, Cr, and Ni gastrointestinal bioaccessibilities are needed to fully understand the effects after long-term exposure and the cancer-causing potential of these elements over a lifetime.

Identification of (anti-)androgenic activities and risks of sludges from industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants

The annual production of sludges is significant all over the world, and large amounts of sludges have been improperly disposed by random dumping. The contaminants in these sludges may leak into the surrounding soils, surface and groundwater, or be blown into the atmosphere, thereby causing adverse effects to human health. In this study, the (anti-)androgenic activities in organic extracts of sludges produced from both industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were examined using reporter gene assay based on MDA-kb2 cell lines and the potential (anti-)androgenic risks were assessed using hazard index (HI) based on bioassays. Twelve of the 18 samples exhibited androgen receptor (AR) antagonistic activities, with AR antagonistic equivalents ranging from 1.2 × 10² μg flutamide/g sludge to 1.8 × 10⁴ μg flutamide/g sludge; however, no AR agonistic activity was detected in any of the tested samples. These 12 sludges were all from chemical WWTPs; no sludges from domestic WWTPs displayed AR antagonistic activity. Aside from wastewater source, treatment scale and technology could also influence AR antagonistic potencies. The HI values of all the 12 sludges exceeded 1.0, and the highest HI value was above 3.0 × 10³ for children; this indicates that these sludges might cause adverse effects to human health and that children are at a greater risk than adults. The anti-androgenic potencies and risks of the subdivided fractions were also determined, and medium-polar and polar fractions were found to have relatively high detection rates and contribution rates to the AR antagonistic potencies and risks of the raw sample extracts.

Spatial characteristics of heavy metal contamination and potential human health risk assessment of urban soils: A case study from an urban region of South India

Due to the rapid development of urbanization, the contamination of heavy metals in urban soils has become one of the major concerns of environmental and risk to humans. The main objective was to determine the contamination of six heavy metals in 25 urban soils and also to evaluate the associated health risk via diverse indices for adults and children. The mean concentration of Pb (47.48 mg/kg), Cr (43.24 mg/kg), Cu (40.64 mg/kg), Zn (34.68 mg/kg), Co (16.54 mg/kg), and Ni (7.55 mg/kg) exceeded the geochemical background values. Pb and Zn were closely attributed to traffic sources. Geo-accumulation index (I_geo) showed that Pb and Co in the soils were at the moderately pollution level, while 4% of soil samples were moderately polluted to heavily pollution levels by Cu. Enrichment factor (EF) showed that soils presented minor to severe anthropogenic pollution levels in the investigated region. The heavy metals to the non-carcinogenic risk of humans in the investigated region are absolutely from Cr and Pb, while the carcinogenic risk is controlled by Cr, and the remaining metals pose no possible risk to the local people. Specially, children had larger health risks in terms of non-carcinogenic risks than adults which may be related to their behavioral and physiological characteristics.
