Synthesis of nanogeopolymer adsorbent and its application and reusability in the removal of methylene blue from wastewater using response surface methodology (RSM)

Organic dyestuff are mostly toxic compounds that pose serious dangers to the environment. Adsorption using low-cost adsorbents is the most favorable method for its economic aspects. Recently, geopolymers have been introduced as an effective adsorbent for dyes and heavy metals. In this investigation, the synthesis of geopolymers from fired brick waste (Homra) was studied with full characterization using X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, Energy dispersive X-ray, Scanning electron microscope tests and Transmission electron microscopy. The synthesized nano-Homra geopolymer (NHGP) was then subjected to the removal of one of the most used basic dyes, Methylene Blue (MB). Adsorption optimization was applied using Response surface methodology to study dye adsorption by the synthesized nano-geopolymer. The independent variables studied were: temperature, contact time, and concentration of dye in the elimination process, which were varied in the range of (25-60 ℃), (10-180 min), and (20-300 mg/L) respectively. The results obtained from ANOVA indicated that the maximum removal efficiency of 95% and adsorption capacity of 80.65 mg/g at a temperature of 59 ℃, contact time of 163 min, and an initial concentration of 254 mg/L. The results showed that the data obtained from the adsorption of MB onto NHGP was compatible with the Pseudo second order (R2 = 0.9838) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.9882).

Functionalization strategy of carboxymethyl cotton gauze fabrics with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a recyclable material for biomedical applications

The accumulation of uremic toxins in the human body poses a deadly risk because it causes chronic kidney disease. To increase the effectiveness of hemodialysis and raise the survival rate, these toxins must be effectively removed from the bloodstream. Developing effective materials for removing these dangerous substances requires a thorough understanding of the interactions between an adsorbent and the uremic toxins. Thankfully, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown considerable promise for the identification and treatment of kidney disorders. Herein, cotton gauze fabrics (CGF) were carboxylated using monochloroacetic acid to produce carboxymethylated cotton gauze fabrics (CM-CGF). CM-CGF was subsequently decorated in situ with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67, resulting in carboxymethylated cotton gauze fabrics-zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (CM-CGF-ZIF). The CGF, CM-CGF, and CM-CGF-ZIF were evaluated for potential kidney applications by removing uric acid and creatinine from mimic blood. The results showed that CM-CGF-ZIF had the highest adsorption of uric acid and creatinine. The maximum adsorption capacity of uric acid and creatinine was 164 and 222 mg/g for CM-CGF-ZIF, respectively, compared to 45 and 67 mg/g for CGF. CM-CGF-ZIF showed excellent antibacterial activity, good antifungal activity, low cytotoxicity, and a satisfactory level of blood compatibility.

Exploring the structural characteristics and dye removal capabilities of powder-, granule- and film- shaped magnetic activated carbon derived from Oleaster seed

Dye pollution in water caused by excessive discharge of industrial effluent has become a major environmental problem in recent decades because of its irreversible effects on human health. In this study, low-cost carbon-based adsorbents synthesized from Oleaster seed (OS) were prepared in three forms of powder (PAC), film (FAC), and granule (GAC) and used for the removal of methylene blue dye. The properties of the synthesized adsorbents were characterized by SEM-EDX, BET, XPS and FTIR analyses. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of PAC, FAC, and GAC adsorbents were obtained as 68.49, 32.25, and 15.10 mg/g, respectively at the optimum experimental conditions of pH = 10, adsorbent dosages of 0.5, 1, and 2 g/l, contact times of 60, 90, and 120 min, dye concentration of 10 mg/L, and temperature of 25°C. The Langmuir isotherm well described the equilibrium data for all three adsorbents. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best fit with the adsorption data obtained from all three adsorbents. Adsorption occurred spontaneously through a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms, with a thermodynamically exothermic process. The desorption experiments demonstrated that all the adsorbents have substantial potential for recovery. The novel activated carbon/alginate composite films are proposed as more promising biosorbents to remove MB dye from the aquatic environment compared to GAC adsorbents.

ZnO@ activated carbon derived from wood sawdust as adsorbent for removal of methyl red and methyl orange from aqueous solutions

Activated carbon (AC) and ZnO@AC composite derived from wood sawdust were prepared to be utilized as adsorbents for methyl red (MR) and methyl orange (MO) anionic dyes from the aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the AC and ZnO@AC composite toward both dyes was achieved in the strong acidic medium (pH = 3), and under stirring for 60 min. The kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption of MR and MO dyes onto the AC and ZnO@AC composite fitted well with the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, the intraparticle diffusion and Elovich kinetic models confirmed the adsorption is controlled by external surfaces, and the adsorption is chemisorption process. The isotherm results indicated that the MR and MO dye adsorption occurred via monolayer adsorption, and the estimated maximum adsorption capacities of both dyes onto the ZnO@AC composite were higher than those achieved by AC. Thermodynamic analysis suggested that the adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. The mechanism for MR, and MO dyes adsorption onto the AC and ZnO@AC composite is proposed to be controlled by electrostatic bonding, π-π interactions, and ion exchange, while H-bonding and n-π interactions were minor contributors. This study reveals the potential use of carbon-based adsorbents derived from wood sawdust for the removal of anionic dyes from wastewater.

Chemical modification of Aloe vera leaf hydrogel for efficient cadmium-removal from spiked high-hardness groundwater

Herein, the hydrogel from the leaf of the Aloe vera plant (ALH) was succinylated (SALH) and saponified (NaSALH). The FTIR, solid-state CP/MAS 13C NMR, and SEM-EDX spectroscopic analyses witnessed the formation of SALH and NaSALH from ALH. The pHZPC for NaSALH was found to be 4.90, indicating the presence of -ve charge on its surface. The Cd2+ sorption efficiency of NaSALH was found to be dependent on pH, NaALH dose, Cd2+ concentration, contact time, and temperature. The maximum Cd2+ removal from DW and HGW was found to be 227.27 and 212.77 mg g-1 according to the Langmuir isothermal model (>0.99) at pH of 6, NaSALH dose of 40 mg g-1, Cd2+ concentration of 90 mg L-1, contact time of 30 min, and temperature of 298 K. The kinetic analysis of Cd2+ sorption data witnessed that the Cd2+ removal by chemisorption mechanism and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (>0.99). The -ve values of ΔG° and ΔH° assessed the spontaneous and exothermic nature of sorption of Cd2+ by NaSALH. The regeneration and sorption/desorption studies indicated that the sorbent NaSALH is regenerable.

Green preparation of magnetic ferroferric oxide-polyvinyl alcohol-alginate coated UiO-67 nanospheres: Characterization, adsorption properties and adsorption mechanism of methylene blue

In this paper, a kind of magnetic ferric oxide/polyvinyl alcohol/calcium alginate/UiO-67 (Fe3O4/PVA/CA/UiO-67) nanospheres with homogeneous surface interconnecting structures was prepared by using macromolecular polymer polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate as carriers and zirconium organic skeleton as nanocrystals. The properties of magnetic nanospheres were studied by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, XRD, BET, VSM and Zeta potential. The impression of diverse temperatures, MB concentrations, interaction time, pH, and magnetic aerogel sphere dose on MB removal was studied. The optimum adsorption temperature and pH of magnetic nanospheres for MB were 298 K, and 10, respectively. Langmuir simulated that the maximum removal of MB by magnetic nanospheres at room temperature (298 K) was 1371.8 mg/g. The removal of MB by magnetic nanospheres complied with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The isotherm simulation can infer that the Langmuir model was more comply with MB adsorption on magnetic aerogel spheres. Thermodynamic studies have confirmed that the removal of MB by magnetic nanospheres was exothermic and spontaneous. The interaction mechanism of MB on magnetic nanospheres can be deduced by FT-IR and BET, including hydrogen bond, π-π bond, electrostatic interaction, and mesoporous pore flow. The removal rate of nanospheres for MB still reached 70.06 % after six cycles.

Physicochemical fabrication of chitosan and algae with crosslinking glyoxal for cationic dye removal: Insight into optimization, kinetics, isotherms, and adsorption mechanism

Herein, a highly efficient and sustainable adsorbent of cross-linked chitosan-glyoxal/algae biocomposite (CHT-GLX/ALG) adsorbent was developed through an innovative hydrothermal cross-linking method. The CHT-GLX/ALG biocomposite was characterized using several complementary analytical methods that include CHN-O, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDX, and pHpzc. This new adsorbent, named CHT-GLX/ALG, was utilized for the adsorption of a cationic dye (methyl violet 2B; MV 2B), from synthetic wastewater. The optimization of the dye adsorption process involved key parameters is listed: CHT-GLX/ALG dosage (from 0.02 to 0.1 g/100 mL), pH (from 4 to 10), and contact time (from 20 to 180 min) that was conducted using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimal adsorption conditions for the highest decolorization efficiency of MV 2B (97.02 %) were estimated using the statistical model of the Box-Behnken design. These conditions include a fixed adsorbent dosage of 0.099 g/100 mL, pH 9.9, and a 179.9 min contact time. The empirical data of MV 2B adsorption by CHT-GLX/ALG exhibited favorable agreement with the Freundlich isotherm model. The kinetic adsorption profile of MV 2B by CHT-GLX/ALG revealed a good fit with the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) for MV 2B by CHT-GLX/ALG was estimated at 110.8 mg/g. The adsorption of MV 2B onto the adsorbent can be attributed to several factors, including electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged surface of CHT-GLX/ALG and the MV 2B cation, as well as n-π and H-bonding. These interactions play a crucial role in facilitating the effective adsorption of MV 2B onto the biocomposite adsorbent. Generally, this study highlights the potential of CHT-GLX/ALG as an efficient and sustainable adsorbent for the effective removal of organic dyes.

Synthesis of a Magnetic Nanostructured Composite Sorbent Only from Waste Materials

Water pollution is a big problem for the environment, and thus depollution, especially by adsorption processes, has garnered a lot of interest in research over the last decades. Since sorbents would be used in large quantities, ideally, they should be cheaply prepared in scalable reactions from waste materials or renewable sources and be reusable. Herein, we describe a novel preparation of a range of magnetic sorbents only from waste materials (sawdust and iron mud) and their performance in the adsorption of several dyes (methylene blue, crystal violet, fast green FCF, and congo red). The preparation is performed in a hydrothermal process and is thus easily scalable and requires little sophisticated equipment. The magnetic nanostructured materials were analyzed using FTIR, VSM, SEM/EDX, XRD, and XPS. For crystal violet as a pollutant, more in-depth adsorption studies were performed. It was found that the best-performing magnetic sorbent had a maximum sorption capacity of 97.9 mg/g for crystal violet (methylene blue: 149.8 mg/g, fast green FCF: 52.2 mg/g, congo red: 10.5 mg/g), could be reused several times without drastic changes in sorption behavior, and was easily separable from the solution by simply applying a magnet. It is thus envisioned to be used for depollution in industrial/environmental applications, especially for cationic dyes.

Preparation and characterization of Allium cepa extract coated biochar and adsorption performance for hexavalent chromium

The elimination of hazardous metal ions from contaminated water has been an important procedure to improve the quality of the water source. Hence, this study presents the fabrication of Allium cepa extract-coated biochar for the elimination of Cr (VI) from wastewater. The synthesized biochar (SBCH) and modified biochar (BMOJ) were characterized by making use of FTIR, BET, XRD, TGA and SEM. Optimum Cr (VI) removal was achieved at solution pH 2, 0.05 g adsorbent dosage and 180 min agitation period. The adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) onto SBCH and BMOJ followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a satisfactory sum of square residuals (SSR) of 3.874 and 5.245 for SBCH and BMOJ, respectively. Meanwhile, Freundlich isotherm was found to best describe the uptake of Cr (VI) SBCH and BMOJ. Experimental data showed an adsorption capacity of 37.38 and 25.77 mg g-1 and a maximum efficiency of 85.42% and 51.63% for BMOJ and SBCH, respectively. BMOJ also showed good antioxidant characteristics. Thermodynamic data revealed that the uptake of Cr (VI) onto the SBCH and BMOJ was an exothermic and endothermic (ΔH: SBCH =  - 16.22 kJ mol-1 and BMOJ = 13.74 kJ mol-1), entropy-driven (ΔS: SBCH = 40.96 J K-1 mol-1 and BMOJ = 93.26 J K-1 mol-1) and spontaneous process. Furthermore, BMOJ demonstrated excellent reusability and promising characteristics for industrial applications.

Removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution using an efficient chitosan-pectin bio-adsorbent: kinetics and isotherm studies

Wastewater contains organic compounds, including dyes, which have potential risks to the environment. Hence, these compound needs to be eliminated from the aqueous solution. In the present study, chitosan-pectin composite (Cs-Pc) was used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue dye (MB) from synthetic wastewater. To evaluate the parameters affecting adsorption, including the initial MB concentration, solution pH, contact time, and Cs-Pc dose, batch experiments were carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and pH point of zero charges (pH pzc) were applied for characterizations of Cs-Pc. The optimum conditions were obtained with an initial MB concentration of 50 mg L^-1: solution pH ~ 11, Cs-Pc dose: 1.5 g L^-1 and 180 min contact time, which caused 97.77% of MB removal. In addition, the removal efficiency of MB was more influenced by pH than by sorbate dose. Also, Cs-Pc had a higher ability to remove MB than chitosan and pectin, probably due to its highly porous structure and rough surfaces that provides active sites and facilitate MB adsorption. The maximum removal efficiency and the adsorption capacity of MB onto Cs-Pc at 500 mg L^-1 concentration under optimum conditions were 98.67% and 328.02 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were best described by pseudo-second-order and Freundlich equation, respectively. After four times of recycling, the removal efficiency of MB was above 96%. Electrostatic and pi-pi interactions are the main mechanisms for the removal of MB onto the adsorbent. So the application of Cs-Pc is promising for MB removal from polluted solutions not only due to its strong adsorbing capability but also due to its excellent ability to reuse.

Powdered and beaded sawdust materials modified iron (III) oxide-hydroxide for adsorption of lead (II) ion and reactive blue 4 dye

The problems of lead and reactive blue 4 (RB4) dye contamination in wastewater are concerns because of their toxicities to aquatic life and water quality, so lead and RB4 dye removals are recommended to remove from wastewater before discharging. Sawdust powder (SP), sawdust powder doped iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (SPF), sawdust beads (SPB), and sawdust powder doped iron (III) oxide-hydroxide beads (SPFB) were synthesized and characterized with various techniques, and their lead or RB4 dye removal efficiencies were investigated by batch experiments, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and desorption experiments. SPFB demonstrated higher specific surface area (11.020 m² g^-1) and smaller pore size (3.937 nm) than other materials. SP and SPF were irregular shapes with heterogeneous structures whereas SPB and SPFB had spherical shapes with coarse surfaces. Calcium (Ca) and oxygen (O) were found in all materials whereas iron (Fe) was only found in SPF and SPFB. O-H, C-H, C=C, and C-O were detected in all materials. Their lead removal efficiencies of all materials were higher than 82%, and RB4 dye removal efficiencies of SPB and SPFB were higher than 87%. Therefore, adding iron (III) oxide-hydroxide and changing material form helped to improve material efficiencies for lead or RB4 dye adsorption. SP and SPB corresponded to Langmuir model related to a physical adsorption process whereas SPF and SPFB corresponded to the Freundlich model correlated to a chemisorption process. All materials corresponded to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model relating to the chemical adsorption process. All materials could be reused more than 5 cycles with high lead removal of 63%, and SPB and SPFB also could be reused more than 5 cycles for high RB4 dye removal of 72%. Therefore, SPFB was a potential material to apply for lead or RB4 dye removal in industrial applications.

Effective Removal of Refractory Pollutants through Cinnamic Acid-Modified Wheat Husk Biochar: Experimental and DFT-Based Analysis

The removal of refractory pollutants, i.e., methylene blue (MB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), relies heavily on sorption technologies to address global demands for ongoing access to clean water. Because of the poor adsorbent–pollutant contact, traditional sorption procedures are inefficient. To accomplish this, a wheat husk biochar (WHB), loaded with cinnamic acid, was created using a simple intercalation approach to collect dangerous organic pollutants from an aqueous solution. Batch experiments, detecting technologies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to investigate the interactions at the wheat husk biochar modified with cinnamic acid (WHB/CA) and water interface to learn more about the removal mechanisms. With MB (96.52%) and CIP (94.03%), the functionalized WHB exhibited outstanding adsorption capabilities, with model fitting results revealing that the adsorption process was chemisorption and monolayer contact. Furthermore, DFT studies were performed to evaluate the interfacial interaction between MB and CIP with the WHB/CA surface. The orbital interaction diagram provided a visual representation of the interaction mechanism. These findings open up a new avenue for researchers to better understand adsorption behavior for the utilization of WHB on an industrial scale.

A review study on new aspects of biodemulsifiers: Production, features and their application in wastewater treatment

The effluent produced in refineries is in the form of an oil/water emulsion that must be treated. These emulsions are often stable and a suitable method must be used to separate the oil from the emulsion. Recently, biosurfactants or biodemulsifiers have received much attention to reduce the interfacial tension between two liquids. Biodemulsifiers are produced by microorganisms and have several benefits over chemical demulsifiers such as low-toxic, biodegradability, eco-friendly and easy synthesis. They can eliminate two phases by changing the interfacial forces between the water and oil molecules. Biosurfactants are categorized based on the molecular weight of their compounds (low or high molecular weight). Sophorolipids, lipopeptides rhamnolipids, trehalolipids, glycolipid, lipoproteins, lichenysin, surfactin, and polymeric biosurfactants are several types of biosurfactants, which are produced by bacteria or fungi. This review study provides a deep evaluation of biosurfactants in the demulsification process. To this end, different types of biosurfactants, the synthesis method of various biosurfactants using various microorganisms, features of biosurfactants, and the role of biodemulsifiers in the demulsification process are thoroughly discussed. Also, the impact of various efficient factors like pH, microorganism type, temperature, the oil content in the emulsion, and gravity on biodemulsificaion was studied. Finally, the mechanism of the demulsification process was discussed. According to previous studies, rhamnolipid biodemulsifier showed the highest biodemulsification efficiency (100%) in the removal of oil from an emulsion.
