Pesticides: An alarming detrimental to health and environment

Pesticides are chemical substances of natural or synthetic origin that are used to eradicate pests and insects. These are indispensable in the agricultural processes for better crop production. Pesticide use aims to promote crop yield and protect the crops from diseases and damage. Pesticides must be handled carefully and disposed of appropriately because they are dangerous to people and other species by default. Environmental pollution occurs when pesticide contamination spreads away from the intended plants. Older pesticides such as lindane and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) may remain in water and soil for a longer time. These accumulate in various parts of the food chain and cause damage to the ecosystem. Biological techniques in the management of pest control such as importation, augmentation, and conservation, and the accompanying procedures are more efficient, less expensive, and ecologically sound than other ways. This review mainly focuses on the consequences on the targeted and non-targeted organisms including the health and well-being of humans by the use of pesticides and their toxicity. The side effects that occur when a pesticide's LD50 exceeds the accepted limit through oral or skin penetration due to their binding to various receptors such as estrogen receptors, GABA, EGFR, and others. These pesticide classes include carbamates, pyrethroids, organochlorides, organophosphorus, and others. The current study seeks to highlight the urgent requirement for a novel agricultural concept that includes a major reduction in the use of chemical pesticides.

In Vitro Effects of Cypermethrin and Glyphosate on LPS-Induced Immune Cell Activation

(1) Background: The insecticide cypermethrin (Cypm) and the herbicide glyphosate (Glyp) are among the most widely used pesticides. While the two pesticides have been considered to have low toxicity in mammals, some indication of potential immunotoxicity has emerged. The aim of this work was to investigate in vitro the effects of Cypm and Glyp on bacteria lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune cell activation and of Cypm on 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT)-induced maturation of dendritic cells (DCs). (2) Methods: The release of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-8, the expression of the surface markers CD54 and CD86 in human primary peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and THP-1 cells were investigated together with CD83, HLA-DR, IL-6, and IL-18 in DCs. (3) Results: While no significant modulation on LPS-induced immune cell activation was observed following Glyp exposure, with only a trend toward an increase at the highest concentration tested, Cypm reduced the responses to LPS and to MBT, supporting a direct immunosuppressive effect. Overall, the present study contributes to our understanding of pesticide-induced immunotoxicity, and the results obtained support evidence showing the immunosuppressive effects of Cypm.

Determination of fungicide residues in soil using QuEChERS coupled with LC-MS/MS, and environmental risk assessment

Fungicide residues of soil samples taken from Batak Plain of Çanakkale province of Türkiye were assessed. Fungicide residue analyses were performed with the use of QuEChERS method and LC-MS/MS device. Blank samples were spiked at two different limit of quantification (LOQ) levels for method verification. Overall recovery was identified as 85.69% with an RSD of 12.36% (n=360; SD=10.59). A total of 110 soil samples were taken in November 2020. Present analyses revealed that 59.09% of samples contained fungicide residues at different concentrations. Propiconazole had the highest concentration (1736.06 μg/kg) in one sample, taken from the edge of the field where pesticide wastes were found and 26 fungicides were found at different concentrations in the same sample. Azoxystrobin was encountered in majority of the samples (29 samples). The most frequent fungicides were ordered as; boscalid and tebuconazole (22 samples) > metalaxyl (17 samples) > fluopyram (15 samples). Thirteen triazole fungicides were found in soil samples, mostly at moderately hazardous level (Class II). Risk assessments revealed that hazard levels of fungicides for adults and children were low with a hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) of <1. Despite the safe nature of fungicides in soil samples, the greatest HQ values were identified for propiconazole (326.52E-08 for adults and 2449.00E-08 for children). The sum of hazard quotients for all fungicides was 86.31E-08 8 for adult and 647.35E-08 for children. In terms of soil pollution, it is important for farmers to apply fungicides with low HQ levels.
