Abstract
Aquaculture has intensified tremendously with the increasing demand for protein sources as the global population grows. However, this industry is plagued with major challenges such as poor growth performance, the lack of a proper environment, and immune system impairment, thus creating stress for the aquaculture species and risking disease outbreaks. Currently, prophylactics such as antibiotics, vaccines, prebiotics, probiotics, and phytobiotics are utilized to minimize the negative impacts of high-density farming. One of the promising prophylactic agents incorporated in fish feed is resveratrol, a commercial phytophenol derived via the methanol extraction method. Recent studies have revealed many beneficial effects of resveratrol in aquatic animals. Therefore, this review discusses and summarizes the roles of resveratrol in improving growth performance, flesh quality, immune system, antioxidant capacity, disease resistance, stress mitigation, and potential combination with other prophylactic agents for aquatic animals.

Abstract
Postbiotics have the ability to improve host metabolic disorders and immunity. In order to explore whether the postbiotics SWFC (cultured supernatant mixture of Cetobacterium somerae and Lactococcus lactis) repaired the adverse effects caused by feeding of high-fat diet (HFD), zebrafish were selected as the experimental animal and fed for 6 weeks, with dietary HFD as the control group, and HFD containing 0.3 g/kg and 0.4 g/kg SWFC as the treatment groups. The results indicated that addition of SWFC in the diet at a level of 0.3 and 0.4 g/kg didn't affect the growth performance of zebrafish (P > 0.05). Supplementation of dietary SWFC0.3 relieved lipid metabolism disorders through significant increasing in the expression of pparα and cpt1, and decreasing the expression of cebpα, pparγ, acc1 and dgat-2 genes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the content of triacylglycerol was markedly lower in the liver of zebrafish grouped under SWFC0.3 (P < 0.05). Dietary SWFC0.3 also improved the antioxidant capacity via increasing the expression level of ho-1, sod and gstr genes, and significant inducing malondialdehyde content in the liver of zebrafish (P < 0.05). Besides, dietary SWFC0.3 also notably improved the expression level of lysozyme, c3a, defbl1 and defbl2 (P < 0.05). The expression level of pro-inflammatory factors (nf-κb, tnf-α, and il-1β) were significantly decreased and the expression level of anti-inflammatory factor (il-10) was markedly increased in the postbiotics 0.3 g/kg group (P < 0.05). Feeding with SWFC0.3 supplemented diet for 6 weeks improved the homeostasis of gut microbiota and increased the survival rate of zebrafish after challenged with Aeromonus veronii Hm091 (P < 0.01). It was worth noting that the positive effect of dietary SWFC at a level of 0.3 g/kg was considerably better than that of 0.4 g/kg. This may imply that the effectiveness and use of postbiotics is limited by dosage.

Abstract
High-fat (HF) diets have been shown to cause hepatic impairment in fish species, but the mode of action, especially the pathways involved, has not yet been determined. In this study, the effects of resveratrol (RES) supplementation on the hepatic structure and fat metabolism of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were determined. Based on transcriptome and proteomics results, RES was found to promote fatty acid β-oxidation in the blood, liver, and liver cells associated with apoptosis and the MAPK/PPAR signaling pathway. RES supplementation was found to alter the expression of genes related to apoptosis and fatty acid pathways like blood itga6a and armc5 which were upregulated and downregulated respectively by high-fat feeding while ggh and ensonig00000008711 increased and decreased, respectively, with RES addition. Relative to the PPAR signaling pathway, fabp10a and acbd7 showed a reverse U-shaped tendency, both in different treatments and at different times. Proteomics results demonstrated that MAPK/PPAR, carbon/glyoxylate, dicarboxylate/glycine serine, and threonine/drug-other enzymes/beta-alanine metabolism pathways in the RES group were significantly affected, and Fasn and Acox1 decreased and increased, respectively, with RES addition. Seven subgroups were obtained using scRNA-seq, and enrichment analysis showed that the PPAR signaling pathway was upregulated with RES supplementation. RES significantly increased the expression of the marked genes (pck1) ensonig00000037711, fbp10a, granulin, hbe1, and zgc:136461, which are liver cell-specific genes. In conclusion, RES resulted in significantly enriched DGEs associated with fat metabolism and synthesis via the MAPK-PPAR signaling pathway.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) has been found to have immunological enhancement effects on Oreochromis niloticus. In O. nilocticus, the liver, spleen and kidney act as immune target tissues, while intestine works for nutrition sensing organ. In the present study, we determined RES administration on these immune tissues transcriptomic response in genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT), and further analyzed the relationship between transcriptomic response and intestinal microbiota. As results, hepatic hemosiderin and intestinal goblet cells significantly increased with RES addition. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathways associated with herpes simplex virus 1 infection, calcium signaling pathway, cell adhesion molecules, apoptosis, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/peroxisome proliferators-activated receptors (PPAR) signaling pathways were enriched. In particular, the differentially enriched genes (DEGs) associated pathways were present in different sampling tissues, times, and comparisons, interestingly, the PPAR signaling pathway was enriched with increasing time of RES addition. The assembled DEGs presented verified expression in the kidney, liver, spleen, and intestine tissues, and fabp6 was highly expressed in the intestine. Serial DEGs of fatty acid-binding proteins (fabp7, fabp7a, fabp10a) decreased in the liver and kidney, and fabp6 significantly increased in the spleen. With time, the pathways of energy metabolism, glycan biosynthesis, and metabolism decreased and increased in the intestinal metagenome. Some Candidatus branches significantly increased (C. cerribacteria and C. harrisonbacteria) and while others decreased (C. glodbacteria, etc.), whereas C. verstraetearchaeota fluctuated with RES addition. slc27a6 and dbi were negatively correlated with bacteria involved in the lipid, energy, and carbohydrate metabolism pathways. The present study suggests that RES supplementation affected lipid metabolism in immune-related organs may be related to the PPAR signaling pathway.

Resveratrol Modulates the Redox Response and Bile Acid Metabolism to Maintain the Cholesterol Homeostasis in Fish Megalobrama amblycephala Offered a High-Carbohydrate Diet. Abstract
This study aimed to characterize the effects of resveratrol on the redox balance, cholesterol homeostasis and bile acid metabolism of Megalobrama amblycephala offered a high-carbohydrate diet. Fish (35.0 ± 0.15 g) were fed four diets including one control diet (32% nitrogen-free extract), one high-carbohydrate diet (45% nitrogen-free extract, HC), and the HC diet supplemented with different levels (0.04%, HCR1; 0.08%, HCR2) of resveratrol for 12 weeks. The HC diet-induced redox imbalance is characterized by increased MDA content and decreased T-SOD and CAT activities in the liver. Resveratrol attenuated this by up-regulating the transcription of Cu/Zn-sod, and increasing the activities of T-SOD, CAT, and GPX. The HC diet enhanced the cholesterol synthesis, but decreased the bile acid synthesis via up-regulating both hmgcr and acat2, and down-regulating cyp7a1, thus resulting in excessive cholesterol accumulation. Resveratrol supplement decreased cholesterol synthesis, and increased cholesterol uptake in the liver by down-regulating both hmgcr and acat2, and up-regulating ldlr. It also increased bile acid synthesis and biliary excretion by up-regulating cyp7a1, and down-regulating mrp2, oatp1, and oatp4 in the hindgut, thereby decreasing cholesterol accumulation. In conclusion, resveratrol improves the cholesterol homeostasis of Megalobrama amblycephala fed a high-carbohydrate diet by modulating the redox response and bile acid metabolism.

Abstract
High-fat diet is regarded as crucial inducers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and metabolic imbalance. In order to investigate the ameliorative potential of resveratrol against the progression of liver injury towards steatohepatitis, common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were distributed into six experimental groups and were fed with a normal-fat diet, a high-fat diet, and supplemented with resveratrol (0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and 3.2 g/kg diet) for 8 weeks. The high-fat diet decreased the antioxidant capacities, as well as causing the inflammatory response and lipid deposition of common carp. Resveratrol induced a marked elevation in the final body weight, weight gain rate, condition factor and significant decrease in the feed conversion ratio. Moreover, dietary resveratrol showed a significant decrease in the alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein levels, which was accompanied by an increase in high-density lipoprotein concentration in serum. A significant elevation in total superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and a decreased malondialdehyde content were observed, along with a substantial elevation in antioxidant activities were found. Additionally, fish fed with resveratrol had an up-regulation of hepatic catalase, copper, zinc superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase 1a, and glutathione peroxidase 1b gene expression via Nrf2 signaling pathway. Expectedly, our results also demonstrated that resveratrol regulates hepatic lipid metabolism in fish by inhibiting the expression of hepatic lipogenesis genes (acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1, fatty acid synthase, and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1), fatty acid uptake-related genes of lipoprotein lipase, and β-oxidation-related genes via PPAR-γ signaling pathway. Furthermore, dietary resveratrol reduced inflammation, as evident by down-regulating the interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α expression levels and upregulating the interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-β2 expression levels via NF-κB signaling pathway. As a whole, our results demonstrated that resveratrol defensed the impacts against high-fat diet on the serum biochemical, hepatic antioxidants, inflammation, and lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES), as a polyphenol natural plant extract, mainly accumulates in the root of Polygonum cuspidatum, which can alleviate liver injury in mammals. Our study aims to explore the effects and potential mechanism of RES on lipid metabolism of red tilapia, and the effects of RES on liver structure, fat synthesis and metabolism of red tilapia were determined. The present study designed four groups named as 8 % fat (8%CK), 10 % fat (10 % HF), 10 % HF + RES and 10 % HF + RES + EX527 (selisistat). The liver tissues of red tilapia were collected at 3 (3 W), 6 (6 W) and 9 (9 W) weeks for parameter determination. Compared to the normal diet group, the hepatocyte of tilapia showed nuclear shift and vacuoles of different sizes when fed a high-fat diet. Meanwhile, the high-fat diet increased the contents of LDL, TC and TG significantly at 6 W, and significantly decreased the content of NAD+ at 9 W. Compared to the high-fat group, the nuclei of tilapia fed with RES were increased and visible, the degree of steatosis and the number of vacuoles were both reduced. At 3/6/9 W, RES significantly decreased the contents of LDL, TG and TMAO, and significantly increased the content of NAD+. A total of 1416 genes were up-regulated and 1928 genes were down-regulated in the group with added RES when compared to the 10 % HF group. The pathways related to lipid metabolism including PPAR signaling pathway have been enriched. Interestingly, the expressions of sirt1, pparα, fabp7 and cpt1b genes were up-regulated in RES diet group, while the expressions of pparγ, me1, scd and lpl genes were down-regulated. After the addition of an inhibitor (EX527), the above indexes showed an opposite trend when compared to the group with added RES. The overall results showed that the high-fat diet could cause fatty liver lesions in the liver of red tilapia, and RES could activate the sirt1 gene, regulate the PPARα/γ pathway and related genes, and thus regulate liver fat synthesis and metabolism leading to the alleviation of damage to liver tissue.

Abstract
The lack of detailed information on nutritional requirement results in limited feeding in Siberian sturgeon. In this study, resveratrol, a versatile natural extract, was supplemented in the daily diet, and the digestive ability and microbiome were evaluated in the duodena and valvular intestines of Siberian sturgeon. The results showed that resveratrol increased the activity of pepsin, α-amylase, and lipase, which was positively associated with an increase in the digestive ability, but it did not influence the final body weight. Resveratrol improved the digestive ability probably by distinctly enhancing intestinal villus height. Microbiome analysis revealed that resveratrol changed the abundance and composition of the microbial community in the intestine, principally in the duodenum. Random forests analysis found that resveratrol significantly downregulated the abundance of potential pathogens (Citrobacter freundii, Vibrio rumoiensis, and Brucella melitensis), suggesting that resveratrol may also improve intestinal health. In summary, our study revealed that resveratrol improved digestive ability and intestinal health, which can contribute to the development of functional feed in Siberian sturgeon.

Abstract
In this study, we investigate the potentials of dietary curcumin and resveratrol on blood biochemistry, immune responses and resistance to the toxicity of the pesticide, abamectin. 540 common carps (30.78 ± 0.17 g) were randomly distributed into 18 tanks (30 fish per tank), as six experimental groups (T1: non-supplemented and on-exposed fish, T2: 300 mg/kg curcumin, T3: 300 mg/kg resveratrol, T4: 12.5% LC50 of abamectin, T5: 300 mg/kg curcumin +12.5% LC50 of abamectin, T6: 300 mg/kg resveratrol + 12.5% LC50 of abamectin). Use of 300 mg/kg resveratrol in the diet of non-abamectin exposed fish improved the growth performance (P < 0.05), while such effects were not observed for curcumin (P > 0.05). There were no differences in the final weight (FW), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and weight gain (WG) between control and fish of the treatments, resveratrol + abamectin and curcumin + abamectin (P < 0.05). The immune components in blood [lysozyme, complement activity, Total immunoglobulin (total Ig), protease, myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitro-blue-tetrazolium (NBT), peroxidase, albumin] and mucus [acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), esterase, antiprotease)] and antioxidant enzymes [(superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)] exhibited various change patterns compared to the control group, however, these components were almost all higher in fish supplemented with curcumin and resveratrol in an abamectin-free medium than in control and other groups (P < 0.05). In most cases, the levels of immune and antioxidant components in the control did not show significant difference with the treatments, resveratrol + abamectin and curcumin + abamectin (P > 0.05). Abamectin induced oxidative stress in fish, as the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels significantly increased in the exposed fish compared to non-exposed groups (P < 0.05). It appears that neither curcumin nor resveratrol were as effective in preventing oxidative stress, because MDA levels were higher in exposed fish (abamectin, curcumin + abamectin, resveratrol + abamectin) than in control and non-exposed individuals (P < 0.05). Curcumin and resveratrol also showed protective effects on liver, since the levels of liver metabolic enzymes [aspartate transaminase (AST), ALP, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)] were lower in the supplemented fish in a abamectin-free medium than in control (P < 0.05). Curcumin and resveratrol also mitigated the stress responses in the exposed fish, as cortisol and glucose levels showed significant decreases in the supplemented fish (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study revealed that abamectin can depress the growth and immunity in the common carp. Although, both resveratrol and curcumin were mitigated the toxic effects of abamectin, it seems that resveratrol be more effective than curcumin.

Abstract
Excessive lipid deposition in farmed fish is a challenge in the aquaculture industry. To study the effect of dietary calcium pyruvate (CaP) on lipid accumulation in fish, we used a high fat diet (HFD) to establish a lipid accumulation model in juvenile golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) and supplemented with 0%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1.0% CaP (diets D0-D4, respectively). After 8-week feeding in floating cages, dietary CaP significantly improved growth performance, which peaked in fish fed diet D3. Supplementation of CaP significantly decreased whole body lipid content in fish fed D2-D4 and hepatosomatic index and liver lipid content in fish fed D3 and D4. Serum and hepatic antioxidant indices, including glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase, showed generally increasing trends in fish fed diets with CaP. In addition, increasing dietary CaP increasingly reduced hepatic activities of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase involved in glycolysis, and increased glycogen contents of the liver and muscle. Dietary CaP up-regulated the liver mRNA expression of pparα, cpt1, hsl and fabp1, but down-regulated expression of srebp-1, fas and acc. In conclusion, 0.75% CaP improved growth performance and reduced excessive lipid deposition by affecting fatty acid synthesis and lipolysis in juvenile T. ovatus fed HFD.

The first insight into black soldier fly meal in brown trout nutrition as an environmentally sustainable fish meal replacement. Animal 2022; 16:100516. Abstract
Insect meals are considered among the most promising feed materials in fish nutrition due to their sustainability and possibility of fish meal replacement. The present study is the first application of full-fat black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal in brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario) diets. Two experiments were performed on 240 brown trout fingerlings (average body mass 4.85 g) distributed into four groups (12 tanks for the growth performance experiment, 10 fish/tank; and 12 metabolic tanks for the digestibility test, 10 fish/tank). The experimental group design was conducted as follows: control diet, with no BSFL and 35% fish meal, and experimental diets: BSFL5 - with 5% BSFL full-fat meal and 32.5% fish meal; BSFL10 - with 10% BSFL full-fat meal and 30% fish meal; and BSFL20 - with 20% BSFL full-fat meal and 25% fish meal. No effects were recorded in the case of growth performance and feed utilization parameters. The environmental sustainability of the usage of insect meals in fish diets was proven - due to the lower fish meal inclusion, the fish-in-fish-out ratio decreased by 31% in BSFL20. In the case of the viscerosomatic index, increases in BSFL5 and BSFL20 were reported. In all experimental groups, decreases in hepatosomatic index values were observed. Crude protein digestibility decreased in BSFL5 and BSFL20, while crude fat digestibility decreased only in the BSFL20 group. The effect of including BSFL full-fat meal in a brown trout diet on serum biochemical parameters was reported. The aspartate transaminase concentration increased in BSFL10 and BSFL20, while the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase values decreased in BSFL20. In the case of total cholesterol, higher values were observed in BSFL10 and BSFL20. The albumin content decreased in the BSFL20 group, while globulin showed the highest values in the control group. The microbiota composition was not affected by insect meal inclusion. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed the high potential of BSFL full-fat meal application of up to 20% in a brown trout diet.

Abstract
Background Lipids are ubiquitous metabolites with diverse functions. Excessive lipid accumulation can trigger lipid redistribution among metabolic organs such as adipose, liver and muscle, thus altering the lipid metabolism. It has been revealed that disturbed lipid metabolism would cause multiple disease complications and is highly correlated with human morbidity. Resveratrol (RSV), a phytoestrogen with antioxidant, can modulate insulin resistance and lipid profile. Recently, research on RSV supplementation to improve glucose and lipid metabolism has been controversial. A meta-analysis may provide a scientific reference for the relationship between lipid metabolism and RSV supplementation. Methods and Analysis We searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases from inception to October 2021 using relevant keywords. A comprehensive search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed. For calculating pooled effects, continuous data were pooled by mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Adopting the method of inverse-variance with a random-effect, all related statistical analyses were performed using the Rev Man V.5.3 and STATA V.15 software. Results A total of 25 articles were incorporated into the final meta-analysis after removal of duplicates by checking titles and abstracts and excluding non-relevant articles. The selected articles had a total of 1,171 participants, including 578 in the placebo group and 593 in the intervention group. According to the current meta-analysis, which demonstrated that there was a significant decrease in waist circumference (SMD = –0.36; 95% CI: –0.59, –0.14; P = 0.002; I2 = 88%), hemoglobin A1c (–0.48; –0.69, –0.27; P ≤ 0.001; I2 = 94%), total cholesterol (–0.15; –0.3, –0.01; P = 0.003; I2 = 94%), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (–0.42; –0.57, –0.27; P ≤ 0.001; I2 = 92%), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.16; –0.31, –0.02; P = 0.03; I2 = 81%) following resveratrol administration. Conclusion These results suggest that RSV has a dramatic impact on regulating lipid and glucose metabolism, and the major clinical value of resveratrol intake is for obese and diabetic patients. We hope that this study could provide more options for clinicians using RSV. Furthermore, in the future, large-scale and well-designed trials will be warranted to confirm these results. Abstract
Fenitrothion (FNT), a commonly used organophosphate, can cause oxidative damage and apoptosis on various organs. However, the underlying mechanisms for FNT-induced cardiotoxicity did not formally report. Here, we have evaluated the possible ameliorative roles of resveratrol (RSV) against FNT-induced cardiac apoptosis in male rats through the sirtuin1 (SIRT1)/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (c-JNK)/p53 pathway concerning pro-oxidant and inflammatory cytokines. Forty-eight male rats were equally grouped into control, RSV (20 mg/kg), 5-FNT (5 mg/kg), 10-FNT (10 mg/kg), 20-FNT (20 mg/kg), 5-FNT-RSV, 10-FNT-RSV, and 20-FNT-RSV where all doses administrated by gavage for four weeks. The present findings demonstrated that RSV markedly diminished the level of hyperlipidemia and elevation in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total creatine kinase (CK-T), and troponin T (TnT) levels following FNT intoxication. Furthermore, RSV significantly reduced FNT-induced cardiac oxidative injury by reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) level and improving the levels of glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and acetylcholinesterase (AchE). Also, the levels of interleukin-1β (IL1β,), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were significantly attenuated in the co-treated groups. Moreover, RSV alleviated the histopathological changes promoted by FNT and repaired the transcript levels of SIRT1, c-JNK, and caspase-9/3 along with p53 immunoreactivity. In silico study revealed that the free binding energies of RSV complexes with protein and DNA sequences of SIRT1 were lower than docked complexes of FNT. Therefore, RSV reserved myocardial injury-induced apoptosis following exposure to FNT by modulating the SIRT1/c-JNK/p53 pathway through cellular redox status and inflammatory response improvements.

Abstract
Many metabolic diseases in fish are often associated with lowered mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO). However, the physiological role of mitochondrial FAO in lipid metabolism has not been verified in many carnivorous fish species, for example in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmonids). In the present study, a specific mitochondrial FAO inhibitor, mildronate (MD), was used to investigate the effects of impaired mitochondrial FAO on growth performance, health status, and lipid metabolism of largemouth bass. The results showed that the dietary MD treatment significantly suppressed growth performance and caused heavy lipid accumulation, especially neutral lipid, in the liver. The MD-treated fish exhibited lower monounsaturated fatty acid and higher long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the muscle. The MD treatment downregulated the gene expressions in lipolysis and lipogenesis, as well as the expressions of the genes and some key proteins in FAO without enhancing peroxisomal FAO. Additionally, the MD-treated fish had lower serum aspartate aminotransferase activity and lower pro-inflammation- and apoptosis-related genes in the liver. Taken together, MD treatment markedly induced lipid accumulation via depressing lipid catabolism. Our findings reveal the pivotal roles of mitochondrial FAO in maintaining health and lipid homeostasis in largemouth bass and could be hopeful in understanding metabolic diseases in farmed carnivorous fish.

Abstract
Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) was cloned and characterized in the present study and the influence of SIRT1 activation induced by resveratrol inclusion on the expression of genes related to lipid metabolism and antioxidation was also investigated. The SIRT1 of largemouth bass, with full-length cDNA sequence of 3395bp encoding 695 amino acids, was mainly expressed in gonad, heart and liver. The analysis of multiple sequence alignment revealed that, in accordance with other species, SIRT1 of largemouth bass contained highly conserved substrate-binding site and NAD+ binding site. The result of subcellular localization displayed that SIRT1 of largemouth bass was mainly localized in the nucleus. The inclusion of 1.0 and 2.5‰ dietary RSV, a natural SIRT1 activator, significantly elevated the SIRT1 protein expression. Meanwhile, the phosphorylation of AKT1 and FoxO1 followed similar pattern with that of SIRT1, indicating the activation of insulin pathway, which may result in the inhibition of lipogenesis and activation of lipolysis, and reduced hepatic triglycerides content. Additionally, the activation of SIRT1 induced by dietary RSV elevated the antioxidant capacity at both transcriptional level and enzymatic level, which was probably mediated by the transcription factor Nrf2. In above, SIRT1 was suggested to be involved in improving antioxidant capacity and alleviating hepatic lipid deposition in largemouth bass.

Abstract
The forkhead box O (FoxO) subfamily is a member of the forkhead transcription factor family. It has regulation functions in glucose metabolism in mammals and fish. In the present study, a gene of the foxo homolog in abalone Haliotis discus hannai was cloned. A conservative forkhead (FH) domain and a transactivation (FoxO-TAD) domain were identified. Abalone foxo-specific siRNA (small interfering RNA) was injected to investigate the functions of foxo on glucose metabolism. Knockdown of foxo inhibited expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pepck) and significantly increased expressions of hexokinase (hk) and pyruvate kinase (pk), but it failed to inhibit the relative mRNA level of glucose-6-phosphatase (g6pase). Then, a 100-day feeding trial was conducted to investigate the response of foxo and glucose metabolism in abalone fed with 1.57% (LFD, low-fat diet), 3.82% (MFD, middle-fat diet) and 6.72% (HFD, high-fat diet) of dietary lipid, respectively. The insulin-signaling pathway (AKT) was depressed and FoxO was activated by the HFD, but it did not inhibit glycolysis (hk) or improved gluconeogenesis significantly (pepck and g6pase). At the same time, impaired hepatopancreas glycogen storage raised hemolymph glucose levels. In conclusion, abalone foxo can be regulated by dietary lipid and can regulate gluconeogenesis or glycolysis in response to changes of dietary lipid levels, in which glycogen metabolism plays an important role.

Abstract
Excessive hepatic glycogen accumulation commonly impairs hepatocytes function and further produces negative effects on growth and health status of carnivorous fish. A 9-week feeding trial was conducted to explore the potential regulation of resveratrol (RSV) on high-carbohydrate-induced glycogen deposition and immune response of largemouth bass. Results showed that high dietary carbohydrate (10 % inclusion of starch) led to hepatic glycogen accumulation and post-prandial hyperglycemia compared with the diet with 5 % starch, which was both alleviated with the inclusion of RSV. The use of RSV promoted the expression of sirtuin 1, which was down-regulated by high dietary carbohydrate. Meanwhile, RSV inclusion promoted the expression of genes involved in insulin pathway and glycolysis and inhibited the expression of gluconeogenesis-related genes. Additionally, high dietary carbohydrate significantly reduced lysozyme content but increased complement C4 content, which were both reversed with RSV supplementation. Meanwhile, RSV inclusion inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines but promoted anti-inflammatory cytokines expression, compared with the high carbohydrate treatment. In conclusion, RSV inclusion was beneficial in alleviating high-dietary-carbohydrate-induced glycogen accumulation and immune response in largemouth bass.

Abstract
Oreochromis niloticus (genetically improved farmed tilapia, GIFT) often bites the root of Polygonum cuspidatum when it is used as a floating bed, and resveratrol (RES) is mainly accumulated in the root of P. cuspidatum. Blood acts as a pipeline for the fish immune system. Generating blood transcriptomic resources is crucial for understanding molecular mechanisms underlying blood immune responses. In this study, we determined the effects of RES administration on blood transcriptomic response in GIFT. With increasing RES concentration, 133 (0.025 vs. 0.05 g/kg RES), 155 (0.025 vs. 0.1 g/kg RES), and 123 (0.05 vs. 0.1 g/kg RES) genes were detected as significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Three and ninety-five shared significant DEGs were found to be enriched among the three (except 0.1 g/kg RES) and four groups (0, 0.025, 0.05, and 0.1 g/kg RES), respectively. To determine the relationship between mitochondrial regulation and RES supplementation, the results of RNA-Seq were analyzed and nine mitochondria-related genes (ATP synthase or mitochondrial-function-related genes) were verified. The results revealed the same expression pattern: cytochrome c isoform X2 (cox2), katanin p60 ATPase-containing subunit A1 isoform X1 (katna1), plasma membrane calcium-transporting ATPase 1-like (atp2b1) and GTP-binding protein A-like (gtpbpal) showed the highest expression in the 0.1 g/kg RES group, while NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 2 mitochondrial (nad7), ATP synthase subunit beta, mitochondrial (atpb), ATP synthase subunit alpha, mitochondrial-like (atpal), ATP synthase subunit alpha, mitochondrial (atpa) and ATP-dependent Clp protease proteolytic subunit, mitochondrial (clpp) revealed a dose-dependent expression following RES supplementation. Blood Ca2+-ATPase activity, and malondialdehyde, glutathione, and ATP content were significantly increased in the 0.05 (except Ca2+-ATPase activity), 0.1 g/kg RES group when compared with the controls. Eighty-nine shared DGEs were mainly enriched in antigen processing and presentation, cell adhesion molecules and phagosome pathways, based on the comparison between previous reported hepatic and the present blood transcriptome. Our study demonstrated that RES supplementation might improve the resistance to metabolism dysfunction via mitochondrial energy synthesis and/or the respiratory chain (e.g., ATPase).

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the health-promoting properties of sweet pepper by comparing the activity of fractions with variable lipophilicity. Fractions from red pericarp: aqueous (F1), 40% MeOH (F2), and 70% MeOH (F3) were analyzed for antiradical activity (with DPPH• and ABTS+•), and the contents of total phenolic compounds (TP), flavonoids (TF), and dihydroxycinnamic acids (TDHCA). The anticancer potential of the fractions was evaluated in vitro using different cancer cell lines: human colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) and PC-3 (prostate cancer cell). Fibroblast-like cells of L929 obtained from subcutaneous adipose tissue of mouse were used as normal cells. The highest content of TP, TF, and TDHCA along with the strongest antiradical activity was observed for fraction F2, while the strongest anticancer properties against PC-3 were observed in fraction F3. Fraction F3 primarily contained capsianoside derivatives, which had been isolated through chromatographic methods and identified by spectral methods. These analyses helped in identifying 8 compounds, including 3 new compounds.

Abstract
Aims Chronic high fat consumption has been shown to modulate nutrient transporter content in the intestine of obese mice; however it is unclear if this regulation occurs before or after the establishment of obesity, and the underlying molecular mechanism requires elucidation. Main methods Towards this goal C57BL/6 mice were fed a low fat diet (LFD) or high fat diet (HFD), and specific protein and gene expression levels were assessed for up to 12 weeks. Similar experiments were also performed with leptin-deficient (Ob/Ob) mice. Key findings The results showed that the HFD group presented decreased GLUT2, PEPT1, FAT/CD36 and NPC1L1, and increased NHE3, MTTP and L-FABP content. Animals fed an HFD also presented enhanced lipid transporter gene expression of Slc27a4, Npc1l1, Cd36, Mttp and L-Fabp. Additionally, FAT/CD36 and NPC1L1 protein levels were reduced in both HFD-induced obese and Ob/Ob mice. Ob/Ob mice also exhibited increased Slc2a2 and Slc15a1 mRNAs expression, but the protein expression levels remained unchanged. The HFD also attenuated PKA and PKC activities. The inhibition of PKA was associated with decreased FAT/CD36 content, whereas increased L-FABP levels likely depend on CREB activation, independent of PKA. It is plausible that the HFD-induced changes in NPC1L1, MTTP and L-FABP protein content involve regulation at the level of transcription. Moreover, the changes in GLUT2 and PEPT1 content might be associated with low PKC activity. Significance The results indicated that an HFD is capable of reducing nutrient transporter content, possibly attenuating nutrient uptake into the intestine, and may represent a feedback mechanism for regulating body weight. Furthermore, the elevated levels of NHE3, L-FABP and MTTP may account for the increased prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia in obese individuals. All of these changes are potentially linked to reduced PKA or PKC activities.

Abstract
The aim was to study the effect of resveratrol on the interplay of inflammatory signals using three different cell models; a metabolic organ (liver), an endocrine organ (visceral adipose tissue, VAT) and an immune organ (head kidney leukocytes, HKL) following lipopolysaccharide challenge (LPS). Atlantic salmon HKL, liver cells and VAT were isolated from the same fish (n = 5). Each cell type was cultured either as mono-cultures, as co-cultures between HKL-liver cells, liver cells-VAT and HKL-VAT. Triple -cultures included all three tissues. In all cultures of HKL, LPS induced transcription of IL-1β, cox2, tnfα, IL-12, ccattβ and Ahr were significantly inhibited by resveratrol (100, 200 μM). Likewise, in all cultures of liver cells, the LPS induced expression of IL-1β was inhibited by resveratrol (100 and 200 μM). HKL, both mono-cultures and triple-cultures and VAT cocultured with liver cells, showed LPS induced cox2 transcription that was inhibited by resveratrol (100 and 200 μM). In contrast, VAT cultured as triple cultures, resveratrol 200 μM particularly, in the presence of LPS, seemed to increase the expression of IL-1β and ccattβ. Resveratrol did not significantly affect lox5 expression in any culture. HKL and VAT are the main producers of PGE2 in response to inflammatory stimuli. VAT showed high endogenous production of eicosanoids, particularly LTB4 and LTB5. Resveratrol inhibited bot LPS induced and endogenous eicosanoid production. Possible targets of resveratrol, Sirt1 and pAMPK were affected differently in the different cells and tissue studied.

Abstract
ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) is an important enzyme linking carbohydrate to lipid metabolism by generating acetyl-CoA from citrate for fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. Mendelian randomization of large human cohorts has validated ACLY as a promising target for low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering and cardiovascular protection. Among current ACLY inhibitors, Bempedoic acid (ETC-1002) is a first-in-class, prodrug-based direct competitive inhibitor of ACLY which regulates lipid metabolism by upregulating hepatic LDL receptor (LDLr) expression and activity. ACLY deficiency in hepatocytes protects from hepatic steatosis and dyslipidemia. In addition, pharmacological inhibition of ACLY by bempedoic acid, prevents dyslipidemia and attenuates atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic ApoE-/- mice, LDLr-/- mice, and LDLr-/- miniature pigs. Convincing data from clinical trials have revealed that bempedoic acid significantly lowers LDL-C as monotherapy, combination therapy, and add-on with statin therapy in statin-intolerant patients. More recently, a phase 3 CLEAR Harmony clinical trial ("Safety and Efficacy of Bempedoic Acid to Reduce LDL Cholesterol") has shown that bempedoic acid reduces the level of LDL-C in hypercholesterolemic patients receiving guideline-recommended statin therapy with a good safety profile. Hereby, we provide a updated review of the expression, regulation, genetics, functions of ACLY in lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis, and highlight the therapeutic potential of ACLY inhibitors (such as bempedoic acid, SB-204990, and other naturally-occuring inhibitors) to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. It must be pointed out that long-term large-scale clinical trials in high-risk patients, are warranted to validate whether ACLY represent a promising therapeutic target for pharmaceutic intervention of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis; and assess the safety and efficacy profile of ACLY inhibitors in improving cardiovascular outcome of patients.

Abstract
Adding immunopotentiators to plant protein based diets has been a feasible way to improve fish growth performance and healthy status. In this study, an 8-week trial was carried out to explore the effects of resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound, on growth performance, anti-oxidative capacity and immune responses in turbot fed soybean meal based diet. As the results showed, replacement 45% fish meal with soybean meal (SBM) significantly depressed the fish growth, feed utilization and the heights of villi and microvilli in distal intestine. The mRNA levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (sod), glutathione peroxidase (gsh-px) and peroxiredoxin 6 (prx 6), were highly inhibited in SBM group. The inflammation related genes in intestine were also responsive to soybean meal. Supplying resveratrol showed no effects on fish growth performance but significantly restored the intestinal morphology and improved the mRNA levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes as well as the activity of SOD. Meanwhile, resveratrol significantly improved the mRNA levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor-β and inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (tnf-ɑ), interleukin-1β (il-1β) and interleukin-8 (il-8). The results indicate that resveratrol could attenuate the oxidative stress and inflammatory response induced by soybean meal in turbot. This study shows resveratrol is an effective immunopotentiator to carnivorous fishes fed plant protein sources.

Abstract
Tilapia is susceptible to hepatic steatosis when grown in intensive farming systems. The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism of fatty liver induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus). Juvenile GIFT were fed with HFD or a normal-fat diet (NFD) for 60 days. Substantial fat deposition in the liver of HFD-fed GIFT on days 20, 40, and 60 was observed using hematoxylin – eosin staining and oil red O staining. The increased fat deposition was consistent with increased triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels in the liver of HFD-fed GIFT. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in serum biochemical indexes (TG, TC, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and insulin contents, and alanine aminotransferase activity) between GIFT fed a HFD and GIFT fed a NFD on days 20, 40, and 60. Furthermore, 60 days of a HFD significantly changed (P < 0.05) the hepatic fatty acid composition, and led to increased polyunsaturated fatty acid levels and decreased saturated fatty acid and monounsaturated fatty acid levels. Hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities increased by day 20 and then declined, which led to an increase in malondialdehyde contents in the liver of HFD-fed GIFT. Molecular analyses revealed that the microRNAs miR-122, miR-29a, and miR-145-5p were upregulated, whereas miR-34a was downregulated in HFD-fed GIFT. SCD, ELOVL6, and SRD5A2 encode three important enzymes in lipid metabolism, and were identified as potential targets of miRNAs. The transcript levels of hepatic SCD and ELOVL6 were decreased and that of hepatic SRD5A2 was increased in GIFT fed a HFD. Overall, the results of this study revealed a potential link between miRNAs and fatty liver induced by HFD, and suggest that a HFD could lead to excess fat deposition in the GIFT liver, which may disrupt hepatic lipid metabolism and reduce the antioxidant defense capacity.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of resveratrol on the growth performance, energy sensing, glycolipid metabolism and glucose and insulin load of blunt snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala fed high-carbohydrate diets. Fish (39.44 ± 0.06 g) were randomly fed three diets: a control diet (30% carbohydrate), a high-carbohydrate diet (HC, 41% carbohydrate), and the HC diet supplemented with 0.04% resveratrol (HCR) for 12 weeks. Fish fed the HC diet had significantly high values of nitrogen and energy retention efficiency, hepatosomatic index, intraperitoneal fat ratio, whole-body lipid content and intraperitoneal fat glycogen and lipid contents compared to the control group, but showed little difference with the HCR treatment. Liver and muscle lipid contents and plasma levels of glucose, glycated serum protein, advanced glycation end products and total cholesterol of fish fed the HC diet were significantly higher than those of the control group, whereas the opposite was found with resveratrol supplementation. Fish fed the HC diet obtained significantly low values of plasma insulin levels and hepatic adenosine monophosphate (AMP) contents and NAD+/NADH ratio compared to HCR treatment, but showed little difference with the control group. The opposite was found for hepatic adenosine triphosphate (ATP) contents and the ATP/AMP ratio. In addition, fish fed the HC diet showed significantly high transcriptions of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glycogen synthase, fatty acid synthetase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase α (ACCα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ and PPARα compared to the control group, whereas the opposite was found for protein levels of AMP-activated protein kinase α (t-AMPKα), phosphorylated AMP-activated protein kinase α (p-AMPKα), sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), and p-AMPKα/t-AMPKα ratio as well as the transcriptions of AMPKα1, AMPKα2, SIRT1, PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), glucose-6-phosphatase, carnitine palmitoyl transferase I (CPT I) and acyl-CoA oxidase. Resveratrol supplementation significantly up-regulated the protein levels of t-AMPK, p-AMPK, and SIRT1, p-AMPK/t-AMPK ratio as well as the transcriptions of AMPKα1, AMPKα2, SIRT1, PGC-1α, GLUT2, FBPase, and CPT I compared to HC group, while the opposite was found for sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1, FAS and ACCα. Furthermore, resveratrol improved glucose and insulin tolerance of fish fed the HC diet after glucose and insulin load.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest that the use of vegetable oils at expense of fish oil in aquaculture feeds might have potential negative effects on fish redox homeostasis and adiposity. Resveratrol (RESV) is a lipid-soluble phytoalexin present in fruits and vegetables with proven in vivo antioxidant function in animals. The present study aims to assess the potential use of RESV in Atlantic salmon feeds. To this end, post-smolt salmons with an initial BW of 148±3 g were fed four experimental diets for 15 weeks. A diet low in fish oil served as a control and was supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 g/kg of RESV, respectively. The effect of the experimental diets on animal performance, tissue fatty acid composition, and the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in antioxidant signalling, lipid peroxidation, and metabolism were studied. Resveratrol significantly reduced feed intake and final BW of the salmon. Feeding RESV did not affect the sum of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids or total lipids in the fillet. While the content of total polyunsaturated fatty acids was not affected, the percentages of some fatty acids in the liver and fillet were changed by RESV. Furthermore, in liver, the relative expression of glutathione peroxidase 4b, nuclear factor-like 2, and arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase remained unchanged across treatment groups. In conclusion, the negative impact of dietary RESV on FI and hence reduction of the BW discourages its inclusion in low fish oil diets for Atlantic salmon.
