Electro-oxidation of rutin in the presence of p-toluenesulfinic acid

Copper-Guanosine Nanorods (Cu-Guo NRs) as a Laccase Mimicking Nanozyme for Colorimetric Detection of Rutin

Inspired by laccase activity, herein, Cu-guanosine nanorods (Cu-Guo NRs) have been synthesized for the first time through a simple procedure. The activity of the Cu-Guo NR as the laccase mimicking nanozyme has been examined in the colorimetric sensing of rutin (Rtn) by a novel and simple spectrophotometric method. The distinct changes in the absorbance signal intensity of Rtn and a distinguished red shift under the optimum condition based on pH and ionic strength values confirmed the formation of the oxidized form of Rtn (o-quinone) via laccase-like nanozyme activity of Cu-Guo NRs. A vivid and concentration-dependent color variation from green to dark yellow led to the visual detection of Rtn in a broad concentration range from 770 nM to 54.46 µM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 114 nM. The proposed methodology was successfully applied for the fast tracing of Rtn in the presence of certain common interfering species and various complex samples such as propolis dry extract, human biofluids, and dietary supplement tablets, with satisfactory precision. The sensitivity and selectivity of the developed sensor, which are bonuses in addition to rapid, on-site, cost-effective, and naked-eye determination of Rtn, hold great promise to provide technical support for routine analysis in the real world.

Electrochemical Sensor for Determination of Various Phenolic Compounds in Wine Samples Using Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Modified Carbon Paste Electrode

Phenolic compounds contain classes of flavonoids and non-flavonoids, which occur naturally as secondary metabolites in plants. These compounds, when consumed in food substances, improve human health because of their antioxidant properties against oxidative damage diseases. In this study, an electrochemical sensor was developed using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (MCPE) for the electrosensitive determination of sinapic acid, syringic acid, and rutin. The characterization techniques adapted for CPE, MCPE electrodes, and the solution interface were cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Scan rate and pH were the parameters subjected to optimization studies for the determination of phenolic compounds. The incorporation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles to the CPE as a sensor showed excellent sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and low preparation cost. The limits of detection (LOD) obtained were 2.2 × 10⁻⁷ M for sinapic acid, 2.6 × 10⁻⁷ M for syringic acid, and 0.8 × 10⁻⁷ M for rutin, respectively. The fabricated electrochemical sensor was applied to determine phenolic compounds in real samples of red and white wine.

Influence of hydroxyl substitution on flavanone antioxidants properties

The aim of our study was to determine the effect of the position of the hydroxyl group on the antioxidant properties of flavonoid derivatives. For this purpose, we performed electrochemical analysis and quantum-mechanical calculations to describe the mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation, and we selected the two methods of ABTS (2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate), which allowed us to determine the ability to scavenge free radicals. On the basis of the research, we found that the derivatives of flavonoids, which have a hydroxyl group substituted at the R-3 position on the C ring, have outstanding antioxidant activity. Flavone, which had an OH group substituted at the R-6 and R-7 position on the ring A, showed similar antioxidant activity to flavone without -OH groups in the structure and slightly higher activity than the di-substituted flavone on the ring A.

Dithiooxamide modified glassy carbon electrode for the studies of non-aqueous media: electrochemical behaviors of quercetin on the electrode surface

Electrochemical oxidation of quercetin, as an important biological molecule, has been studied in non-aqueous media using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. To investigate the electrochemical properties of quercetin, an important flavonoid derivative, on a different surface, a new glassy carbon electrode has been developed using dithiooxamide as modifier in non-aqueous media. The surface modification of glassy carbon electrode has been performed within the 0.0 mV and +800 mV potential range with 20 cycles using 1 mM dithioxamide solution in acetonitrile. However, the modification of quercetin to both bare glassy carbon and dithiooxamide modified glassy carbon electrode surface was carried out in a wide +300 mV and +2,800 mV potential range with 10 cycles. Following the modification process, cyclic voltammetry has been used for the surface characterization in aqueous and non-aqueous media whereas electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been used in aqueous media. Scanning electron microscopy has also been used to support the surface analysis. The obtained data from the characterization and modification studies of dithioxamide modified and quercetin grafted glassy carbon electrode showed that the developed electrode can be used for the quantitative determination of quercetin and antioxidant capacity determination as a chemical sensor electrode.
