Understanding Our Peers with Pablo: Exploring the Merit of an Autism Spectrum Disorder De-stigmatisation Programme Targeting Peers in Irish Early Education Mainstream Settings

Characterising Insistence on Sameness and Circumscribed Interests: A Qualitative Study of Parent Perspectives

Manifestations of insistence on sameness (IS) and circumscribed interests (CI) are complex, with individuals varying considerably, not only in the types of behaviours they express, but also in terms of a behaviour's frequency, intensity, trajectory, adaptive benefits, and impacts. However, current quantitative RRB instruments capture only certain aspects of these behaviours (e.g., mostly frequency or general "severity"). Thus, the current study utilised a semi-structured caregiver interview to provide an in-depth, qualitative characterization of different aspects of IS and CI presentation. Caregivers of 27 autistic children and adolescents displaying IS and/or CI behaviours (3-16 years; 18 males; 9 females) participated in a semi-structured interview. Responses were analysed using thematic framework analysis. Framework analysis identified nine different aspects of IS and CI presentation: (1) intensity, (2) frequency, (3) emergence of behaviour, (4) changes over time, (5) day-to-day fluctuations, (6) purpose/adaptive benefit, (7) experiences of distress, (8) challenges for the individual, their family, and their socialisation, and (9) management strategies and their effectiveness. Autistic children and adolescents were reported to vary greatly on each of these dimensions. Findings demonstrate the complexity of IS and CI presentations and highlight the need for more comprehensive quantitative assessments that independently assess the frequency, intensity, and impact of behaviours. Further, findings reported here emphasize the need for ecologically valid measures that assess the contexts in which these behaviours occur and how their presentations can change within and across days.

Reducing stigma toward autistic peers: a pilot investigation of a virtual autism acceptance program for children

Inclusive educational practices can be beneficial for autistic children, especially when the general education classroom can better meet the child's academic and socio-emotional needs than a special education classroom. Unfortunately, autistic children may not thrive in general education classrooms if they are perceived negatively, subject to bullying, and are socially isolated and rejected by their typically developing peers. Autism acceptance programs may help address the root cause of these problems, autism stigma. Thus, this study evaluated the effectiveness of a virtual autism acceptance program presented to typically developing, 8-10-year-old children through remote learning technology. The 5-week, stakeholder-approved pilot program included a themed module each week (e.g., facts about autism and reducing stigma, sensory sensitivities, strengths of those with autism) presented through a variety of online educational materials. Pretest, posttest, and maintenance results showed that the program was effective in improving children's knowledge about autism, and children's attitudes and behavioral intentions toward their peers with autism. In addition to reducing autism stigma, study findings suggest that remote learning and virtual tools can be used to implement an efficacious autism acceptance program to children, allowing for greater and more cost-effective outreach to children and schools.

Negative first impression judgements of autistic children by non-autistic adults

Introduction

Although autism inclusion and acceptance has increased in recent years, autistic people continue to face stigmatization, exclusion, and victimization. Based on brief 10-second videos, non-autistic adults rate autistic adults less favourably than they rate non-autistic adults in terms of traits and behavioural intentions. In the current study, we extended this paradigm to investigate the first impressions of autistic and non-autistic children by non-autistic adult raters and examined the relationship between the rater's own characteristics and bias against autistic children.

Method

Segments of video recorded interviews from 15 autistic and 15 non-autistic children were shown to 346 undergraduate students in audio with video, audio only, video only, transcript, or still image conditions. Participants rated each child on a series of traits and behavioural intentions toward the child, and then completed a series of questionnaires measuring their own social competence, autistic traits, quantity and quality of past experiences with autistic people, and explicit autism stigma.

Results

Overall, autistic children were rated more negatively than non-autistic children, particularly in conditions containing audio. Raters with higher social competence and explicit autism stigma rated autistic children more negatively, whereas raters with more autistic traits and more positive past experiences with autistic people rated autistic children more positively.

Discussion

These rapid negative judgments may contribute to the social exclusion experienced by autistic children. The findings indicate that certain personal characteristics may be related to more stigmatised views of autism and decreased willingness to interact with the autistic person. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the social inclusion and well-being of autistic people.

Understanding Stigma in Autism: A Narrative Review and Theoretical Model

The experience of stigma by autistic people is relatively understudied, despite contributing to a range of poor outcomes and having an overarching impact on well-being. The current review of the literature synthesizes research to determine what is currently known and presents a theoretical model of autism stigma. Autism stigma is primarily influenced by a public and professional understanding of autism in combination with interpretation of visible autistic traits. Moderating factors include the quality and quantity of contact with autistic people, cultural factors, sex and gender, individual differences, and diagnostic disclosure. Stigma can reduce well-being as well as increase the presence of camouflaging behaviors, which mask autistic traits. Caregivers of autistic people can experience stigma by association, that is, affiliate stigma, which can impact their own well-being. A variety of interventions and approaches to reduce stigma are discussed, including "autism friendly" spaces, positive media representation, educational and psychosocial training for the public and professionals, as well as cultural and systemic shifts that foster inclusivity and recognize neurodiversity.

A systematic review on autistic people's experiences of stigma and coping strategies

Autism can be understood as a concealable stigmatized identity. This is the first systematic review to synthesize the literature on autistic people's experiences of stigma and coping strategies. 2877 studies were screened and 27 were included in this review. The reviewed literature demonstrates that autistic individuals are acutely aware of being stereotyped, judged, and discriminated by others. Autistic people also show signs of internalizing stigma, rendering them more vulnerable to low self-worth and poorer mental health. To manage the impact of stigma, the included studies suggest that autistic individuals may use these strategies: concealment and camouflaging, selective disclosure and self-advocacy, as well as positive reframing and reconstructing identity. However, the evidence is limited and mixed in terms of how helpful and effective these strategies are. Future studies should include autistic populations with a wider range of intellectual abilities and explore interventions that can support autistic people in managing stigma to supplement interventions that seek to reduce stigma towards autistic people. The power of language in perpetuating and challenging stigma also has important implications for research and practice, underscoring the need for researchers and practitioners to reflect carefully on the messages they are communicating about autism.
