Green Synthesis of Ag Nanoparticles with Anti-bacterial Activity Using the Leaf Extract of an African Medicinal Plant, Ipomoea asarifolia (Convolvulaceae)

Chemical variability of volatile concentrate from two Ipomoea L. species within a seasonal gradient

In the present study, are extracted volatile concentrate from Ipomoea asarifolia Poir. and Ipomoea setifera (Desr.) Roem. & Schult. in five-month seasonal gradient. The flowers were subjected to simultaneous distillation - extraction (SDE). The chemical composition of the volatile concentrate was determined by gas chromatography (CG/MS) and (CG-FID). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Clustering Analysis (HCA) were performed with the chemical constituents. It was observed that the chemical composition of I. asarifolia varied more with seasonality in relation to the species I. setifera. Furthermore, there is a possibility that germacrene D and α-copaene, the main components of the variation volatile of I. asarifolia and with higher concentrations in the rainy months, have ecological importance, attracting specific pollinators for the rainy season. This is the first study to report the chemical composition of the volatile compounds of I. asarifolia and I. setifera along a seasonal gradient.

Green Synthesis of TiO2 Nanoparticles Using Acorus calamus Leaf Extract and Evaluating its Photocatalytic and In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity

Here, we present an innovative and creative sustainable technique for the fabrication of titania (TiO2) using Acorus calamus (A. calamus) leaf extract as a new biogenic source, as well as a capping and reducing agent. The optical, structural, morphological, surface, and thermal characteristics of biosynthesized nanoparticles were investigated using UV, FTIR, SEM, DLS, BET, and TGA-DSC analysis. The phase formation and presence of nanocrystalline TiO2 were revealed by the XRD pattern. FTIR analysis revealed conjugation, as well as the presence of Ti–O and O–H vibrational bands. The nanoparticles were noticed to be globular, with an average size of 15–40 nm, according to the morphological analysis, and the impact of size quantification was also investigated using DLS. The photocatalytic activity of bare, commercial P-25 and biosynthesized TiO2 (G-TiO2) nanoparticles in aqueous solution of rhodamine B (RhB) dye was investigated under visible light irradiation at different time intervals. The biosynthesized TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited strong photocatalytic activity, degrading 96.59% of the RhB dye. Different kinetic representations were utilized to analyze equilibrium details. The pseudo-first-order reaction was best suited with equilibrium rate constant (K1) and regression coefficients (R2) values 3.72 × 10−4 and 0.99, respectively. The antimicrobial efficacy of the prepared nanoparticles was investigated using the disc diffusion technique. Further, biosynthesized TiO2 showed excellent antimicrobial activity against the selected gram-positive staining (B. subtilis, S. aureus) over gram-negative (P. aeruginosa, E. coli) pathogenic bacteria in comparison to bare TiO2.

Synthesis, Characterization and Biomedical Application of Silver Nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been employed in various fields of biotechnology due to their proven properties as an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agent. AgNPs are generally synthesized through chemical, physical and biological approaches involving a myriad of methods. As each approach confers unique advantages and challenges, a trends analysis of literature for the AgNPs synthesis using different types of synthesis were also reviewed through a bibliometric approach. A sum of 10,278 publications were analyzed on the annual numbers of publication relating to AgNPs and biological, chemical or physical synthesis from 2010 to 2020 using Microsoft Excel applied to the Scopus publication database. Furthermore, another bibliometric clustering and mapping software were used to study the occurrences of author keywords on the biomedical applications of biosynthesized AgNPs and a total collection of 224 documents were found, sourced from articles, reviews, book chapters, conference papers and reviews. AgNPs provides an excellent, dependable, and effective solution for seven major concerns: as antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, bone healing, bone cement, dental applications and wound healing. In recent years, AgNPs have been employed in biomedical sector due to their antibacterial, antiviral and anticancer properties. This review discussed on the types of synthesis, how AgNPs are characterized and their applications in biomedical field.

Prospective Application of Nanoparticles Green Synthesized Using Medicinal Plant Extracts as Novel Nanomedicines

The use of medicinal plants in green synthesis of metal nanoparticles is increasing day by day. A simple search for the keywords "green synthesis" and "nanoparticles" yields more than 33,000 articles in Scopus. As of August 10, 2021, more than 4000 articles have been published in 2021 alone. Besides demonstrating the ease and environmental-friendly route of synthesizing nanomaterials, many studies report the superior pharmacological properties of green synthesized nanoparticles compared to those synthesized by other methods. This is probably due to the fact that bioactive molecules are entrapped on the surface of these nanoparticles. On the other hand, recent studies have confirmed the nano-dimension and biocompatibility of metal ash (Bhasma) preparations, which are commonly macerated with biological products and administered for the treatment of various diseases in Indian medicine since ancient times. This perspective article argues for the prospective medical application of green nanoparticles in the light of Bhasma.

In silico analyses of toxicity of the major constituents of essential oils from two Ipomoea L. species

Convolvulaceae Juss. is a family of vines and shrubs composed of species of ecological and economic importance. Ipomoea asarifolia (Desr.) Roem. & Schult. and I. setifera Poir. are ruderal and evergreen weeds that invade pastures and cause intoxication in cattle during the dry season. In the present study, the essential oils (EOs) of the leaves from I. setifera (dry season) and I. asarifolia (dry and wet seasons) were obtained by steam distillation for 3h. The chemical composition of the EOs was determined using gas chromatography coupled to gas spectrometry (CG/MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (CG-FID). To correlate the toxicity of the major chemical constituents of I. setifera and I. asarifolia EOs, we predicted the inhibition activity against the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) and P-glycoprotein 1 (P-gp) using a machine learning-based (ML-based) algorithm. In silico analyses were also applied to evaluate the pharmacokinetics properties related to the penetration in the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and gastrointestinal absorption. The chemical composition of the EO of I. setifera was characterized by high levels of (E)-caryophyllene (36.7%) and β-elemene (20.49%). The I. asarifolia EO showed a phytol derivative as the main chemical constituent in the dry season (35.49%), and its content was reduced in the sample collected during the wet season (10.67%). The constituent (E)-caryophyllene was also present in the leaves of I. asarifolia, but at lower levels (15.93-19.93%) when compared to the EOs of I. setifera. Our computational analyses indicated that the constituents caryophyllene oxide, cedroxyde, pentadecanal, and phytol can be related to the toxicity of these weeds. This is the first study to report the chemical composition of I. asarifolia and I. setifera EOs and correlate their molecular mechanism of toxicity using in silico approaches.

Morphology control of colloidal silver bio-nanoparticles leaves shape using Sesbania sesban

Sesbania sesban extract solution (SSL) was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The effect of time on the formation of nanoparticles was investigated using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. The AgNPs were synthesized after 25 min and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The average sizes of nanoparticles were estimated to be between 10 and 30 nm. The XRD of AgNPs, after 4 months, showed the stability of nanoparticles in air. The effects of silver nitrate concentrations and SSL concentrations on the morphology and size of synthesized AgNPs were observed by SEM.

Nanosilver crystals capped with Bauhinia acuminata phytochemicals as new antimicrobials and mosquito larvicides

To develop novel nanoformulated insecticides and antimicrobials, herein we produced Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the Bauhinia acuminata leaf extract. This unexpensive aqueous extract acted as a capping and reducing agent for the formation of AgNPs. We characterized B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs by UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and TEM analyses. UV-vis spectroscopy analysis of B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs showed a peak at 441.5 nm. FTIR shed light on functional groups from the phytoconstituents involved in nanosynthesis. XRD of B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs suggested a face-centered cubic structure, with a highly crystalline nature. TEM of B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs revealed mean size of 25 nm, with round shape. AgNPs tested at 60 μg/mL inhibited the growth of 5 bacteria and 3 fungal pathogens. In the insecticidal assays on important mosquito species, LC₅₀ of the aqueous extract of B. acuminata leaves on the larvae of Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus were 204.07, 226.02, and 249.24 μg/mL, respectively. The B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs exhibited higher larvicidal efficacy, with LC₅₀ values of 24.59, 27.19, and 30.19 μg/mL, respectively. Therefore, herein we developed a single-step, reliable, inexpensive, and environmentally non-toxic synthesis process to obtain AgNPs with high bioactivity against pathogens and vectors. Given the effective antimicrobial and larvicidal activity, nanoparticles fabricated using plant extracts and extremely low concentrations of trace elements, such as silver, can be exploited for multipurpose activities. Our results pointed out that B. acuminata-synthesized AgNPs have a promising potential in antimicrobial food packaging, as well as a foliar spray to control plant pathogens in the field, and to synergize the efficacy of fungicidal and larvicidal formulations.

The desert wormwood (Artemisia herba-alba) - From Arabian folk medicine to a source of green and effective nanoinsecticides against mosquito vectors

The development of eco-friendly and effective insecticides is crucial for public health worldwide. Herein, we focused on the desert wormwood (Artemisia herba-alba), a plant widely used in Arabian traditional medicine, as a source of green nanoinsecticides against mosquito vectors, as well as growth inhibitors to be employed against microbial pathogens. Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) fabricated with the A. herba-alba extract were tested on Indian and Saudi Arabian strains of Anopheles, Aedes and Culex mosquitoes. The chemical profile of the A. herba-alba extract was determined by LC-DAD-MS and ¹H NMR studies. Then, AgNPs were studied using UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, TEM, and EDX analyses. Artemisia herba-alba-synthesized AgNPs showed high larvicidal toxicity against mosquitoes from both Indian and Saudi Arabian strains. LC₅₀ of AgNPs against Indian strains was 9.76 μg/ml for An. stephensi, 10.70 μg/ml for Ae. aegypti and 11.43 μg/ml for Cx. quinquefasciatus, whereas against Saudi Arabian strains it was 33.58 μg/ml for Ae. aegypti and 38.06 μg/ml for Cx. pipiens. In adulticidal experiments, A. herba-alba extract showed LC₅₀ ranging from 293.02 to 450 μg/ml, while AgNP LC₅₀ ranged from 8.22 to 27.39 μg/ml. Further, low doses of the AgNPs inhibited the growth of selected microbial pathogens. Overall, A. herba-alba can be further considered as a source of phytochemicals, with special reference to saponins, for effective and prompt fabrication of AgNPs with relevant insecticidal and bactericidal activity against species of high public health importance.
