Coevolutionary legacies for plant decomposition

Coevolution has driven speciation and evolutionary novelty in functional traits across the Tree of Life. Classic coevolutionary syndromes such as plant-pollinator, plant-herbivore, and host-parasite have focused strongly on the fitness consequences during the lifetime of the interacting partners. Less is known about the consequences of coevolved traits for ecosystem-level processes, in particular their 'afterlife' legacies for litter decomposition, nutrient cycling, and the functional ecology of decomposers. We review the mechanisms by which traits resulting from coevolution between plants and their consumers, microbial symbionts, or humans, and between microbial decomposers and invertebrates, drive plant litter decomposition pathways and rates. This supports the idea that much of current global variation in the decomposition of plant material is a legacy of coevolution.

A world tour in the name of natural products

BACKGROUND

Names of natural products (NP) are usually given depending on the species of origin, be it a plant, a marine organism or a microbial species. In some cases, names have been given with reference to people, animals, music, foods or places. Many NP refer to countries, cities or specific places such as mountains, deserts, seas and oceans.

PURPOSE

On the basis of NP names, a world tour has been imagined referring to more than one hundred NP with names evocative of over 50 countries and regions.

RESULTS

The world tour goes from UK (britannin) to Italy (vaticanol) in Europe, from Uganda (ugandoside) to Senegal (senegalene, senegalenines) in Africa, from Brazil (brasilin) to Chile (santiaguine) in South America, from Utah (utahin) to Florida (floridanolide) in the US. It includes Central America (mexicanin, panamine) and the Caribbean islands (jamaicin, bahamaolides). It also crosses Alaska (alaskene) and Canada (quebecol, canadaline). The tour continues throughout Asia, from Thailand (thailandine) to China (Chinaldine) and Pakistan (pakistanamine), to finally reaches Oceania with Australia (australigenin) and Vanuatu (vanuatine), among other countries. This virtual journey, without bordure or wall, brings us to the highest mountains (himalayamine), the deepest oceans (pacificins) and the largest deserts (desertomycin).

CONCLUSION

In the current period of COVID-19 pandemia, with restricted opportunities for international travels, this NP name-based virtual journey offers a world tour to learn more from nature and to inspire scientists to contribute to the field of NP discovery and drug design. There are also limitations associated with the use of trivial names for NP. NP names can be further exploited for teaching and learning.

Factors Affecting Foliar Oregonin and Condensed Tannin in Red Alder (Alnus rubra Bong.): Phytochemicals Implicated In Defense Against Western Tent Caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum Packard)

Past work shows a significant negative correlation between foliar oregonin concentration and western tent caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum Packard) feeding on red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.). Above an oregonin threshold of 20% leaf dry weight, little feeding by caterpillars is observed. Concentrations of defensive chemicals are influenced by plant genotype, environmental conditions, insect feeding, and the interactions of these factors. Our objective was to measure the effects of nitrogen (N) availability and wounding on foliar oregonin and condensed tannin concentrations in red alder genotypes. One-year-old seedlings from 100 half-sib red alder families were treated with two levels of ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) for two growing seasons in a common garden. In the second year, leaves from 50 families from the fertilization experiment were used in a bioassay feeding experiment to determine the effects of N fertilization and genotype on WTC damage, and to identify a subset of 20 families with a range of damage to analyze for phytochemical composition. In separate experiments, wound-induction treatments were conducted outdoors and, in a greenhouse using the N treated trees in their third and fourth year, respectively. Foliar condensed tannin, oregonin and N concentrations were measured and ranked among the plant genotypes, and between the two N treatments and two wounding treatments. Results showed that oregonin and condensed tannin concentrations varied among the alder genotypes. Leaf N concentration was negatively correlated with concentration of oregonin. Neither of the measured phenolic compounds responded to wounding. The results suggest that red alder foliar oregonin and condensed tannin are likely constitutive defenses that are largely determined by genotype, and that the negative correlation of defense compounds with plant internal N status holds in this N-fixing tree.
