Abstract
Novel fluorescent probes were constructed for the convenient and rapid analysis of Cu2+ ions, taking advantages of the the triphenylamine backbone as chromophore and acylhydrazone group as the Cu2+ recognition site. Especially, probe T2 could act as a dual-channel probe towards Cu2+ through both fluorescent and colorimetric method. Through the fluorescent method, the detection limit of probe T2 was calculated to be as low as 90 nmol/L and there was a good linear relationship between the intensity change and the concentration of Cu2+ ions. By virtue of the two-phase liquid-liquid extraction method, probe T2 could be successfully applied in practical extraction and separation of Cu2+. Furthermore, by applying a "turn-off-turn-on" circle, compound T2 could act as a sensitive probe towards S2- anions through the indirect approach and the detection limit of complex T2-Cu2+ for S2- anion was found to be 110 nmol/L.

Abstract
An optical chemical sensor has been developed for the quantitative spectrophotometric analysis of copper. The optode is dependent on covalent immobilization of 2-(2-benzothiazolylazo)-3-hydroxyphenol (BTAHP) in a transparent agarose membrane. The absorbance variation of immobilized BTAHP on agarose as a film upon the addition of 5 × 10-3 M aqueous solutions of Mn2+, Zn2+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+, La3+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Zr4+, Se4+, Th4+, and UO22+ revealed substantially higher changes in the Cu2+ ion content compared to other ions investigated here. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as the solution pH, the reaction time, and the concentration of reagents, on the quality of Cu2+ sensing were examined. Under ideal experimental circumstances, a linear response was achieved for Cu2+ concentrations ranging from 1.0 × 10-9 to 7.5 × 10-6 M with an R2 value of 0.9988. The detection (3σ) and quantification (10σ) limits of the procedure for Cu2+ analyses were 3.0 × 10-10 and 9.8 × 10-10 M, respectively. No observable interference was recorded in the detection of Cu2+ due to other inorganic cations. With no indication of BTAHP leaching, the membrane demonstrated good durability and quick response times. The optode was effectively used to determine the presence of Cu2+ in environmental water, food, and biological samples.

Abstract
The detection of key ions in environmental samples has garnered significant attention in recent years in the pursuit of a cleaner environment for living organisms. Bifunctional and multifunctional sensors, as opposed to single-species sensors, have emerged as a rapidly developing field. Many reports in the literature have documented the use of bifunctional sensors for the subsequent detection of metal and cyanide ions. These sensors, consisting of simple organic ligands, form coordination compounds with transition metal ions, resulting in clear visible or fluorescent changes that facilitate detection. In some cases, a single polymeric material can act as a ligand and coordinate with metal ions, forming a complex that serves as a sensor for cyanide ion detection in biological and environmental samples through various mechanisms. Nitrogen is the most dominant coordinating site in these bifunctional sensors, with the sensitivity of the sensors being directly proportional to the denticities of ligands for metal ions, while for cyanide ions the sensitivity was found independent of the denticity of the ligands. This review covers the progress made in the field over the past fifteen years (2007-2022), with most ligands detecting copper (II) and cyanide ions, but with the capability to detect other metals such as iron, mercury, and cobalt as well.

Abstract
Here, three Schiff bases 3a-c, differing by the substitutions (-H, -Cl, and -N(CH3)2) on the phenyl ring, have been designed and synthesized via the reaction of ortho-aminophenol with benzaldehyde, 2,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde and para-dimethylamine benzaldehyde in 1:1 molar ratio with favourable yields of 89-92%, respectively. Their structural characterizations were studied by FT-IR, NMR, MALDI-MS and elemental analysis. The fluorescence behaviours of compounds 3a and 3b exhibited a severe aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) effect in EtOH/water system. On the contrary, compound 3c had an obvious J-aggregation induced emission (AIE) feature in EtOH/water mixture (v/v = 1:1), and exhibited excellent sensitivity and anti-interference towards Cu2+ with the limit of detection (LOD) of 1.35 × 10-8 M. Job's plot analysis and MS spectroscopic study revealed the 2:1 complexation of probe 3c and Cu2+. In addition, probe 3c was successfully applied to the determination of Cu2+ in real aqueous samples.

Abstract
C-2 and C-5 substituted imidazole skeleton was synthesized through a one-pot two-step strategy. Synthesized molecule emits the light on ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer). This molecule was utilized for its proton donor ability, and we have observed that fluoride and cyanide ions can be detected selectively. Different cations and anions were selected to observe the response of the synthesized molecule. However, there were not any fluorometric and colorimetric response except for fluoride and cyanide ions. Detection limits of fluoride and cyanide ions were found to be 9.22 μM and 11.48 μM, respectively. 1H-NMR spectra for the solution of the sensor and TBAF (tetrabuthylammoniumfluoride) were used for the identification of [L]-[HF2]- species. 3 equiv. TBAF saturated the solution of the sensor in d6-DMSO, and some of the proton resonances shifted to upfield due to the through-bond effect. The disappearance of NH proton with 0.5 equiv. TBAF or TBACN (tetrabuthylammoniumcyanide) showed that there was a proton abstraction by fluoride and cyanide ions, instead of the hydrogen bond. Solid-state application was utilized, and paper test strips were applied. Emission differences emerged when the sensor loaded strips were reacted with TBAF. Time resolved experiments revealed that solution of the sensor and TBAF in DMSO have multiexponential decay, and one of the lifetime was measured as 13.4 ns.

Abstract
A simple, sensitive colorimetric probe for detecting Cu(ii) ions with fast response has been established with a detection limit of 2.82 μM. UV-Vis spectroscopy along with metal ion response, selectivity, stoichiometry, competition was investigated. In the presence of copper(ii), the UV-Vis spectrum data showed significant changes and the colorimetric detection showed a color change from colorless to yellow. After the selective binding of receptor L with Cu(ii), the UV-visible absorption at 355 nm decreased dramatically, a new absorbance band appeared at 398 nm and its intensity enhanced with the increase in the amount of Cu(ii). Moreover, it exhibited highly selective and sensitive recognition towards Cu(ii) ions in the presence of other cations over the pH range of 7-11. The complex structure was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and quantum mechanical calculations using B3LYP/6-31G(d) to illustrate the complex formation between L and Cu(ii). According to the Job plot and the quantum mechanical calculations, the stoichiometric ratio for the complex formation was proposed to be 1 : 1.

Abstract
A near-IR perylene diimide probe (OPR-PDI) containing an oxime-propargyl hybrid moiety at the bay position, was designed and synthesized for detection of Pd species and Cu2+ ions in 90% water, the solid state and MG-63 live cells. The aggregation tendency of OPR-PDI in different polarity solvents transmits solvatochromic and fluorochromic properties to differentiate certain organic solvents. Supramolecular aggregates of OPR-PDI in 90% water act as a dual chemosensor for palladium (Pd) species via de-propargylation or hydrolysis of the Schiff-base and Cu2+ ions via complexation with the O/N binding site with a low limit of detection (LOD) of the order of 7.9 × 10-8 M and 3.4 × 10-7 M respectively. TLC strips coated with OPR-PDI can be applied for sensing of Pd0 and Cu2+ ions in the solid state at levels as low as 34.6 ng cm-2 and 10.5 ng cm-2. OPR-PDI imprinted TLC strips could be used as paper sheets for writing coloured alphabets using Pd0 and Cu2+ ions as ink. Moreover, MTT assay showed that OPR-PDI has very low cytotoxicity (IC50 = 230 μM), good permeability, biocompatibility and can be applied for bio-imaging of Pd species and Cu2+ ions in MG-63 cells. DFT calculations, and cyclic voltammetric (CV) and NMR titration studies have also been discussed.

Abstract
Perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) and its derivatives exhibit excellent thermal, chemical and optical stability, strong electron affinity, strong visible-light absorption and unique fluorescence on/off features. The combination of these features makes PDIs ideal molecular frameworks for development in a broad range of sensors for detecting environmental pollutants such as heavy metal ions (e.g., Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Pd2+, etc.), inorganic anions (e.g., F-, ClO4-, PO4-, etc.), as well as poisonous organic compounds such as nitriles, amines, nitroaromatics, benzene homologues, etc. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advance in research and development of PDI-based fluorescent sensors, as well as related colorimetric and multi-mode sensor systems, for environmental detection in aqueous, organic or mixed solutions. The molecular design of PDIs and structural optimization of the sensor system (regarding both sensitivity and selectivity) in response to varying analytes are discussed in detail. At the end, a perspective summary is provided covering both the key challenges and potential solutions for the future development of PDI-based optical sensors.

Abstract
The sustainable development of point-of-care testing (POCT) for spermine detection is important to check for food spoilage, early diagnosis of various malignancies and diminished anticonvulsant drug carbamazepine response in chronic epilepsy. Herein, the synthesis, characterization and spectroscopic properties of perylene diimide EA-PDI∩Cu2+ complex based nanoparticles towards spermine were studied in detail. This EA-PDI∩Cu2+ complex can be used for the ultrasensitive detection of spermine as low as 86.3 nM (UV-vis) and 90 pM (fluorescence) in aqueous medium, in urine and blood serum samples (recovery 99 ± 3) and in the solid state (0.1 μg L-1), and EA-PDI shows minimal cytotoxicity to cells and can easily enter into Human Osteosarcoma MG-63 cells for bio-imaging of Cu2+ and spermine. This EA-PDI∩Cu2+ complex can be established as a cost-effective method to develop a diagnostic kit for POCT of spermine in terms of a solution-based test kit for real time detection of spermine in vapor and solution form released from fermented food samples.

Abstract
Perylene bisimide derivatives show peculiar physical chemical features, such as a highly conjugated system, high extinction coefficients and elevated fluorescence quantum yields, making them suitable for the development of optical sensors of compounds of interest. In particular, they are characterized by the tendency to aggregate into π-π stacked supramolecular structures. In this contribution, the behavior of the PBI derivative N, N'-bis(2-(trimethylammonium)ethylene)perylene bisimide dichloride was investigated both in aqueous solution and on solid support. The electronic communication between PBI aggregates and biogenic amines was exploited in order to discriminate aromatic amines down to subnanomolar concentrations by observing PBI fluorescence variations in the presence of various amines and at different concentrations. The experimental findings were corroborated by density functional theory calculations. In particular, phenylethylamine and tyramine were demonstrated to be selectively detected down to 10-10 M concentration. Then, in order to develop a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) device, PBI was deposited onto a SPR support by means of the layer-by-layer method. PBI was deposited in the aggregated form and was demonstrated to preserve the capability to discriminate, selectively and with an outstanding analytical sensitivity, tyramine in the vapor phase and even if mixed with other aromatic amines.

Abstract
A novel highly selective chemosensor S1 for cyanide based on unsymmetrical azine derivative was successfully designed and synthesized, which showed both colorimetric and fluorescence turn-on responses for cyanide ions in aqueous. This structurally simple chemosensor could detect CN(-) anion over other anions in aqueous solution DMSO/H2O (v/v=3:2) undergo deprotonation reaction. Results showed that the chemosensor S1 exhibited 50 fold enhancement in fluorescence at 530nm and showed an obvious change in color from colorless to yellow that could be detected by naked eye under the UV-lamp after the addition of CN(-) in aqueous solution. Moreover, the detection limit on fluorescence response of the sensor to CN(-) is down to 6.17×10(-8)M by titration method. Test strips based on S1 were obtain, which could be used as a convenient and efficient CN(-) test kit to detect CN(-) in aqueous solution.
