Development of Illuminant Glow-in-the-Dark Cotton Fabric Coated by Luminescent Composite with Antimicrobial Activity and Ultraviolet Protection

Color-switchable and photoluminescent poly (vinyl chloride) for multifunctional smart applications

Recycled poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) waste was used to prepare transparent material with long-lasting phosphorescence, photochromic activity, hydrophobicity, strong optical transmission, ultraviolet (UV) protection, and stiffness. Lanthanide-activated aluminate (LaA) microparticles were prepared via the high temperature solid state procedure, which were subjected to the top-down grinding technology to afford LaA nanoparticles (LaAN). Laminated poly (vinyl chloride) bottles were shredded into a transparent plastic matrix, which was combined with LaAN and drop-casted to produce smart materials for a variety of applications. Smart window and photochromic film for smart packaging can be made from recycled poly (vinyl chloride) waste by immobilizing it with various ratios of LaAN. Long-lasting phosphorescent translucent poly (vinyl chloride) smart window and films need LaAN to be evenly dispersed in PVC without clumping. Different analytical methods were employed to assess the materials' morphological structure and chemical composition. Photoluminescence and decay spectra were all employed to investigate the luminescence characteristics. In addition, the mechanical performance was studied. According to CIE Lab (Commission Internationale de L'éclairage) color measurements, this transparent PVC smart material becomes a bright green under UV rays and turns a greenish-yellow in the dark. The PVC luminescence was observed to exhibit an apparent emission bands at 429 and 513 nm when excited at 367 nm. Improvements have been monitored in the UV shielding and hydrophobicity with increasing the phosphor concentration. LaAN-immobilized PVC exhibited reversible photochromism. The present approach can be applied for a variety of applications, such as anticounterfeiting films for smart packaging, smart window, and warning lightening marks.

Development of functional glow-in-the-dark photoluminescence linen fabrics with ultraviolet sensing and shielding

Linen fibres were coated with a glow-in-the-dark photoluminescence, flame-retarding, and hydrophobic smart nanocomposite using the pad-dry-curing process. Ecologically friendly ammonium polyphosphate and lanthanide-activated strontium aluminium oxide (LSAO) nanoparticles were immobilized into linen fabric using eco-friendly room-temperature-vulcanizing silicone rubber. Different analytical techniques were used to examine the morphological characteristics and elemental compositions of LSAO nanoparticles and treated linen textiles. The self-extinguishing properties of the treated linen textiles were tested for their fire resistance. After 24 washing cycles, the coated linen samples retained their flame-retarding properties. The treated linen's superhydrophobicity rose in direct proportion to the LSAO concentration. After being excited at 365 nm, the colourless luminescent film that was coated on linen surface gave out an emission wavelength of 519 nm. The photoluminescent linen was monitored to create a range of different colours, including off-white in daytime light and green under ultraviolet (UV) light radiation, according to the Commission Internationale de l'éclairage laboratory colorimetric coordinates and photoluminescence spectra. Emission, excitation, and lifetime spectral analysis of the treated linen revealed persistent phosphorescence. For mechanical and comfort evaluation, the coated linen textiles' bending length and air permeability were assessed. Good UV light shielding and enhanced antibacterial activity were detected in the treated linens.

Simple Preparation of Multifunctional Luminescent Textile for Smart Packaging

Linen has been a significant material for textile packaging. Thus, the application of the simple spray-coating method to coat linen fibers with a flame-retardant, antimicrobial, hydrophobic, and anticounterfeiting luminescent nanocomposite is an innovative technique. In this new approach, the ecologically benign room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone rubber was employed to immobilize the environmentally friendly Exolit AP 422 (Ex) and lanthanide-doped strontium aluminum oxide (RESAO) nanoscale particles onto the linen fibrous surface. Both morphological properties and elemental compositions of RESAO and treated fabrics were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In the fire resistance test, the treated linen fabrics produced a char layer, giving them the property of self-extinguishing. Furthermore, the coated linen samples' fire-retardant efficacy remained intact after 35 washing cycles. As the concentration of RESAO increased, so did the treated linen superhydrophobicity. Upon excitation at 366 nm, an emission band of 519 nm was generated from a colorless luminescent film deposited onto the linen surface. The coated linen displayed a luminescent activity by changing color from off-white beneath daylight to green beneath UV source, which was proved by CIE Lab parameters and photoluminescence spectral analysis. The photoluminescence effect was identified in the treated linen as reported by emission, excitation, and decay time spectral analysis. The comfort properties of coated linen fabrics were measured to assess their mechanical and comfort features. The treated linen exhibited excellent UV shielding and improved antimicrobial performance. The current simple strategy could be useful for large-scale production of multifunctional smart textiles such as packaging textiles.

Development of photoluminescent artificial nacre-like nanocomposite from polyester resin and graphene oxide

Long-lasting phosphorescent nacre-like material was simply prepared from a nanocomposite of inorganic and organic materials. Low molecular weight unsaturated polyester (PET), graphene oxide (GO), and nanoparticles of rare-earth activated aluminate pigment were used in the preparation process of an organic/inorganic hybrid nanocomposite. Using methylethylketone peroxide (MEKP) as a hardener, we were able to develop a fluid solution that hardens within minutes at room temperature. Covalent and hydrogen bonds were introduced between the polyester resin and graphene oxide nanosheets. The interface interactions of those bonds resulted in toughness, excellent tensile strength, and high durability. The produced nacre substrates demonstrated long-persistent and reversible luminescence. The excitation of the produced nacre substrates at 365 nm resulted in a 524 nm emission. After being exposed to UV light, the photoluminescent nacre substrates became green. The increased superhydrophobic activity of the produced nacre substrates was achieved without affecting their physico-mechanical properties.

Synthesis of lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate nanoparticles encapsulated in polyacrylonitrile nanofibres: photoluminescence properties for anticounterfeiting applications

Photochromism has been applied as an interesting technique in order to improve the anticounterfeiting of commercial commodities. To build up a mechanically reliable anticounterfeiting nanocomposite, it has been vital to enhance the engineering process of the anticounterfeiting material. In the current study, we developed mechanically reliable and highly photoluminescent lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate nanoparticles (LSAN)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hybrid nanofibres successfully fabricated using an electrospinning technique for anticounterfeiting applications. The produced nanocomposite films exhibited ultraviolet-induced photochromic anticounterfeiting properties. To guarantee the transparency of the LSAN-PAN film, LSAN must be immobilized onto the nanoparticle size to allow better dispersion without aggregation in the polyacrylonitrile matrix. The LSAN-PAN nanofibrous film demonstrated absorbance intensity that exhibited at 354 nm and associated with an emission intensity at 424 nm. The produced LSAN-PAN films demonstrated an enhanced hydrophobicity when increasing the ratio of LSAN, without adversely influencing their native appearance and mechanical performance. Upon excitation with ultraviolet light, the translucent nanofibrous substrates exhibited fast and reversible photochromic activity to greenish-yellow without exhaustion. The nanofibrous films exhibited stretchability, transparency, flexibility, and ultraviolet light-induced photochromism at low cost. The current strategy can be considered as an efficient technique towards the development of various anticounterfeiting materials for a better market with economic and social values.

Preparation of cellulose-based electrospun fluorescent nanofibres doped with perylene encapsulated in silica nanoparticles for potential flexible electronics

Novel fluorescent nanofibres were developed via the electrospinning of chromophore-doped cellulose. Two different perylene-doped cellulose fluorescent fibres were fabricated using cellulose as a host material and perylene dye derivatives as active dopants. Fluorescent cellulose nanofibres were prepared via the electrospinning technique using two different perylene dyes, including perylene diimide and perylene mono-imide sodium/potassium salts. The generated fluorescent silica nanoparticles exhibited diameters varying in the range 80-180 nm. The generated electrospun fluorescent nanofibrous structures displayed smooth surfaces with average diameters of 200-300 nm for cellulose comprising perylene diimide and sodium/potassium salts of perylene mono-imide dyes, respectively, dispersed uniformly in the cellulose matrix. The generated fluorescent nanoparticles and nanofibres were characterized by different standard methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescent optical microscope (FOM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FT-IR). The fluorescence properties of the fabricated cellulose nanofibres were explored. Those fluorescent nanofibres pave the way for the development of promising textile fluorescence materials, such as flexible displays, photonics, and optical devices.

Facile production of smart superhydrophobic nanocomposite for wood coating towards long-lasting glow-in-the-dark photoluminescence

A smart photoluminescent nanocomposite surface coating was prepared for simple industrial production of long-persisting phosphorescence and superhydrophobic wood. The photoluminescent nanocomposite coatings were capable of continuing to emit light in the dark for prolonged time periods that could reach 1.5 h. Lanthanide-doped aluminium strontium oxide (LASO) nanoparticles at different ratios were immobilized in polystyrene (PS) and developed as a nanocomposite coating for wood substrates. To produce transparency in the prepared nanocomposite coating, LASO was efficiently dispersed in the form of nanoscaled particles to ensure homogeneous dispersion without agglomeration in the PS matrix. The coated wood showed an absorption band at 374 nm and two emission bands at 434 nm and 518 nm. The luminescence spectra showed both long-persisting phosphorescence as well as photochromic fluorescence relying on the LASO ratio. The improved superhydrophobicity and resistance to scratching of the coated wood could be attributed to the LASO NPs incorporated in the polystyrene matrix. Compared with the uncoated wood substrate, the coated LASO-PS nanocomposite film also displayed photostability and high durability. The current study demonstrated the potential high-scale manufacturing of smart wood for some applications such as safety directional signs in buildings, household products, and smart windows.

Preparation of flame-retardant, hydrophobic, ultraviolet protective, and luminescent transparent wood

Transparent wood with multifunctional properties has recently attracted more attention as an efficient building product. Here, we describe the development of transparent wood with long-persistent phosphorescence, tough surface, high durability, photostability, and reversibility without fatigue, and with ultraviolet shielding, superhydrophobicity, and flame-retardant activity. This long-persistent phosphorescent, or glow-in-the-dark, smart wood exhibited an ability to continue emitting light for prolonged periods of time. The photoluminescent translucent wooden substrate was prepared by immobilizing lignin-modulated wooden bulk with an admixture of methylmethacrylate (MMA), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and lanthanide-doped strontium aluminate (LSA; SrAl₂ O₄ :Eu²⁺ ,Dy³⁺ ) phosphor nanoparticles. The photoluminescent transparent wood displayed a colour switch from colourless to bright white beneath ultraviolet (UV) light and greenish-yellow in the dark as reported by Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage laboratory colorimetric space coordinates. The generated phosphorescent wooden substrates demonstrated an absorbance band at 365 nm and an emission band at 516 nm. The phosphorescent transparent wood was improved flame-retardant properties, ultraviolet shielding, and superhydrophobic properties, as well as a reversible long-persistent phosphorescent responsiveness to UV light without fatigue. The current approach demonstrated a potential large-scale production strategy for multifunctional transparent wooden substrates for a range of applications such as smart windows, gentle indoor and outdoor lighting, and safety directional signs in buildings.

Preparation of multifunctional long-persistent photoluminescence cellulose fibres

Simple preparation of flame-retardant, photoluminescent, and superhydrophobic smart nanocomposite coating was developed and applied onto cotton fibres using the simple pad-dry-cure technique. This novel strategy involved the immobilization of rare-earth-doped aluminium strontium oxide (ASO; SrAl₂ O₄ :Eu⁺² ,Dy⁺³ ) nanoparticles, environmentally friendly room temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber (RTV) and environmentally friendly Exolet AP422 (Ex). The fabrics were also able to produce a char film in the fire-resistant assessment, providing fibres with a self-extinguishing characteristic. Furthermore, the fire-retardant performance of the coated cotton samples remained resistant to washing over 35 laundry cycles. The superhydrophobicity of the treated fabrics was monitored to improve by increasing the photoluminescent phosphor nanoparticles. The produced transparent photoluminescent film displayed an absorption at 360 nm and an emission at 526 nm. The photoluminescent fabrics were observed to generate different colorimetric shades, including white, green-yellow and bright white as monitored by Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage laboratory colorimetric coordinates. Slow emissions were detected for the treated cotton fabrics as monitored by emission, ultraviolet-visible light absorption, lifetime, and decay time spectral profiles to indicate glow in the dark phosphorescence effect. Both comfort and mechanical properties of the coated fibres were evaluated by measuring their bending length and air permeability.

Antimicrobial textile: recent developments and functional perspective

Antimicrobial textiles are functionally active textiles, which may kill the microorganisms or inhibit their growth. The present article explores the applications of different synthetic and natural antimicrobial compounds used to prepare antimicrobial textiles. Different types of antimicrobial textiles including: antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral have also been discussed. Different strategies and methods used for the detection of a textile's antimicrobial properties against bacterial and fungal pathogens as well as viral particles have also been highlighted. These antimicrobial textiles are used in a variety of applications ranging from households to commercial including air filters, food packaging, health care, hygiene, medical, sportswear, storage, ventilation and water purification systems. Public awareness on antimicrobial textiles and growth in commercial opportunities has been observed during past few years. Not only antimicrobial properties, but its durability along with the color, prints and designing are also important for fashionable clothing; thus, many commercial brands are now focusing on such type of materials. Overall, this article summarizes the scientific aspect dealing with different fabrics including natural or synthetic antimicrobial agents along with their current functional perspective and future opportunities.

Development of a light activatable lignin nanosphere based spray coating for bioimaging and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy

Many coating materials are commercially available to combat microbial infections. However, these coatings are difficult to synthesize, and are mostly composed of toxic chemicals. Lignin is an under-explored natural biopolymer with multifaceted potential. Lignin, with adhesive, UV resistant, and antimicrobial properties, is a suitable candidate to develop coating materials. Here we report a smart method to fabricate a sustainable nanospray coating from lignin which does not require any toxic chemicals or additives during synthesis. Initially, we have developed stable lignin nanospheres in a single step in aqueous medium, which were later utilized as a lignin nanospray (LNSR). The LNSR was characterized by dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR and other analytical techniques. This LNSR showed remarkable UV blocking, antioxidant and light-activated antimicrobial properties. Interestingly, for the first time, the LNSR demonstrated photoluminescence, making it useful for bioimaging. Moreover, singlet oxygen generation potential was observed in the LNSR, which could render it useful in phototheranostic applications (i.e. light assisted imaging and photodynamic therapy). Further, the LNSR was directly utilized to fabricate a sustainable coating. The nanospray coating exhibited maximum light-induced cell killing when applied to common microbes as detected by live-dead cell imaging. Taken together, the lignin nanospray coating developed via a direct pathway holds great promise to disinfect microbes in the presence of light.

Multi-Modal Contractive Forces of Wools as Actuator

Wool has a long history of use in textiles throughout human civilization. Many smart functions such as reversible shape changes to various stimuli have been demonstrated in the last few years. However, the force-related characteristics are still imperfectly recognized, although they are expected to be used as actuators due to their biological origins and broad applications. Herein, we investigated the feasibility of wools in performing actuating ability through its intrinsic structures and fabrication methods. The diverse modes of contractive forces were obtained in wool materials including platform-like, double-peak, and slope-like shapes, where a molecular model was also presented to trace the origins of stress evolution. After that, a polymeric blend was created to modify the wool materials and a dissimilar performance of stress production was achieved, a square stress mode with stable manner and maintenance, for broad applications in a more efficient way. It is believed that these actuating properties extracted from natural hairs have a large potential in current smart applications and lay down new inspiration in designing actuators.

Khattab T. Recent Advances in Cellulose-Based Biosensors for Medical Diagnosis

Cellulose has attracted much interest, particularly in medical applications such as advanced biosensing devices. Cellulose could provide biosensors with enhanced biocompatibility, biodegradability and non-toxicity, which could be useful for biosensors. Thus, they play a significant role in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostic tools, forensic science, and foodstuff processing safety applications. This review summarizes the recent developments in cellulose-based biosensors targeting the molecular design principles toward medical detection purposes. The recognition/detection mechanisms of cellulose-based biosensors demonstrate two major classes of measurable signal generation, including optical and electrochemical cellulosic biosensors. As a result of their simplicity, high sensitivity, and low cost, cellulose-based optical biosensors are particularly of great interest for including label-free and label-driven (fluorescent and colorimetric) biosensors. There have been numerous types of cellulose substrates employed in biosensors, including several cellulose derivatives, nano-cellulose, bacterial cellulose, paper, gauzes, and hydrogels. These kinds of cellulose-based biosensors were discussed according to their preparation procedures and detection principle. Cellulose and its derivatives with their distinctive chemical structure have demonstrated to be versatile materials, affording a high-quality platform for accomplishing the immobilization process of biologically active molecules into biosensors. Cellulose-based biosensors exhibit a variety of desirable characteristics, such as sensitivity, accuracy, convenience, quick response, and low-cost. For instance, cellulose paper-based biosensors are characterized as being low-cost and easy to operate, while nano-cellulose biosensors are characterized as having a good dispersion, high absorbance capacity, and large surface area. Cellulose and its derivatives have been promising materials in biosensors which could be employed to monitor various bio-molecules, such as urea, glucose, cell, amino acid, protein, lactate, hydroquinone, gene, and cholesterol. The future interest will focus on the design and construction of multifunctional, miniaturized, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and integrated biosensors. Thus, the production of cellulose-based biosensors is very important.

Textile dyeing industry: environmental impacts and remediation

Color is a major attraction component of any fabric regardless of how admirable its constitution. Industrial production and utilization of synthetic dyestuffs for textile dyeing have consequently become a gigantic industry today. Synthetic dyestuffs have introduced a broad range of colorfastness and bright hues. Nonetheless, their toxic character has become a reason of serious concern to the environment. Usage of synthetic dyestuffs has adverse impacts on all forms of life. Existence of naphthol, vat dyestuffs, nitrates, acetic acid, soaping chemicals, enzymatic substrates, chromium-based materials, and heavy metals as well as other dyeing auxiliaries, makes the textile dyeing water effluent extremely toxic. Other hazardous chemicals include formaldehyde-based color fixing auxiliaries, chlorine-based stain removers, hydrocarbon-based softeners, and other non-biodegradable dyeing auxiliaries. The colloidal material existing alongside commercial colorants and oily froth raises the turbidity resulting in bad appearance and unpleasant odor of water. Furthermore, such turbidity will block the diffusion of sunlight required for the process of photosynthesis which in turn is interfering with marine life. This effluent may also result in clogging the pores of the soil leading to loss of soil productivity. Therefore, it has been critical for innovations, environmentally friendly remediation technologies, and alternative eco-systems to be explored for textile dyeing industry. Different eco-systems have been explored such as biocolors, natural mordants, and supercritical carbon-dioxide assisted waterless dyeing. Herein, we explore the different types of dyeing processes, water consumption, pollution, treatment, and exploration of eco-systems in textile dyeing industry.

Studies of Polylactic Acid and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles-Based Composites for Multifunctional Textile Prints

A novel approach toward the production of multifunctional printed technical textiles is reported. Three different metal oxides nanoparticles including titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, and zinc oxide were prepared and characterized. Both natural wool and synthetic acrylic fibers were pretreated with the prepared metal oxide nanoparticles followed by printing using polylactic acid based paste containing acid or basic dyestuffs. Another route was applied via post-treatment of the targeted fabrics with the metal oxide nanoparticles after running the printing process. The color strength (K/S) and colorfastness properties of pretreated and post-treated printed fabrics were evaluated and compared with untreated printed fabrics. The presence of nanoparticles on a fabric surface during the coating process was found to significantly increase the color strength value of the coated textile substrates. The increased K/S value depended mainly on the nature and concentration of the applied metal oxide, as well as the nature of colorant and fabric. In addition, the applied metal oxide nanoparticles imparted the printed fabrics with good antibacterial activity, high ultraviolet protection, photocatalytic self-cleaning, and improved colorfastness properties. Those results suggest that the applied metal oxide-based nanoparticles could introduce ideal multifunctional prints for garments.
