Enhanced Characterization of Pyrene Binding in Mixed Cyclodextrin Systems via Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Rapid detection of rocuronium based on host/guest complex between a pyrene derivative and sugammadex

Rocuronium is widely used in surgery as a neuromuscular relaxant, but it has been difficult to accurately control its specific dosage in clinical operation. Therefore, the development of fast and instant rocuronium detection methods has important application value for reducing risks and safeguarding health. In this study, N, N, N-trimethyl-4-(pyrene-1-butyl)-ammonium bromide (PyBTA) was designed as a probe to detect rocuronium rapidly. The method relied on replacing PyBTA in sugammadex with rocuronium to induce changes in fluorescence intensity of PyBTA, thereby realizing quantitative detection. Its sensing performance and detection mechanism were explored systematically by spectroscopy. The linear range of this method was 0.5-10 μM and the detection limit of it was 0.3 μM. In addition, we confirmed that the host-guest interaction among PyBTA, sugammadex, and rocuronium was mainly driven by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions.

Esterified-sawdust decorated with AgNPs as solid-phase extraction membranes for enrichment and high-sensitivity detection of polychlorinated biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants, which cause serious harm to human health and ecological environment. Thus, a low-cost membrane was developed for highly effective removal and rapid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of PCBs by filling esterified-sawdust (CA-SD) modified with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into solid phase extraction (SPE) column. SD was first modified by an esterification cross-linking strategy and then AgNPs were anchored on the CA-SD to prepare highly sensitive and reproducible SERS substrates (AgNPs/CA-SD). Due to the contraction of the surface area of the CA-SD caused by drying, the gap between the AgNPs could be reduced, thereby generating a large number of hot spots and driving more target molecules into them to obtain the enhanced SERS signals. The AgNPs/CA-SD-based SPE membrane showed excellent SERS activity with an enhancement factor of 5.98 × 10⁸ for the R6G analysis. The proposed SERS-active SPE membrane with functionalization of mercapto-β-cyclodextrin was further developed for the determination of PCB-77 and PCB-1 with the LODs of 1.43 × 10^-9 M and 2.12 × 10^-8 M, respectively. In addition, each PCB in the mixed sample could be quickly distinguished based on the characteristic peaks. The current research exhibits great potential for the simultaneous detection of multiple environmental contaminants and can meet the needs of on-site emergency detection.

Steric effects on the intramolecular charge transfer fluorescence of benzo[b]thiophene-1,1-dioxide bridged macrocages

Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) fluorescence has been widely investigated and exploited in sensor molecules. However, steric effects on the ICT fluorescence properties have rarely been reported so far, although research in this area would promote an understanding of the basics of solvation. Herein, we report the detailed fluorescence properties of bis(trimethylsilyl)benzo[b]thiophene-1,1-dioxide (TMSBTO2) and its caged cyclophanes and non-cage isomers, which demonstrate ICT fluorescence in various solutions. The fluorescence band maxima for these benzo[b]thiophene-1,1-dioxides (BTO2s) showed a red-shift with increasing solvent polarity, confirming ICT fluorescence characteristics. The linearity of the Lippert-Mataga plots was confirmed for all ICT fluorescence measured in hexane, toluene, AcOEt, CH2Cl2, and EtOH. The slopes of the plots decreased in the following order: TMSBTO2, non-cage isomers, and caged BTO2s. It is concluded that the Onsager radii for these BTO2s were increased in the abovementioned order, assuming that the difference in the dipole moments between the excited and ground states for these BTO2s was identical.
