Novel Visible Light Photocatalyst Based on Holmium-Doped Cadmium Sulfide: Synthesis, Characterization and Kinetics Study

Metal sulphides and their heterojunctions for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes-A comprehensive review

Water pollution caused by organic dyes is one of the greatest threats to the ecosystem. The removal of dyes from water has remained a challenge for scientists. Recently, metal sulphides have emerged as a potential candidate for water remediation applications. The efficient charge transportation, greater surface-active sites, and low bandgap of metal sulphides make them an excellent choice of semiconductor photocatalysts for degradation of dyes. This review summarises the potential application of metal sulphides and their heterojunctions for the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes from wastewater. A detailed study has been presented on the synthesis, basics of photodegradation and heterojunctions and photocatalytic activity. The effect of the use of templates, doping agents, synthesis route, and various other factors affecting the photocatalytic activity of metal sulphides have been summarised in this review. The synthesis techniques, characterisation techniques, mechanism of degradation of organic dyes by Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, reusability and stability of metal sulphides, and the scope of future research are also discussed. This study indicates that Scopus-based core gathered data could be used to give an objective overview of the global dye degradation research from 2008 to 2023 (15 years). All data (articles, authors, keywords, and publications) is compiled in the Scopus database. For the bibliometric study, 1962 papers relevant to dye photodegradation by sulfide-based photocatalysts were found, and this number rises yearly. A bibliometric analysis provides a 15-year evaluation of the state-of-the-art research on the impact of metal sulfide-based photocatalysts on the photodegradation of dyes.

Nanomaterials as Photocatalysts-Synthesis and Their Potential Applications

Increasing demand for energy and environmental degradation are the most serious problems facing the man. An interesting issue that can contribute to solving these problems is the use of photocatalysis. According to literature, solar energy in the presence of a photocatalyst can effectively (i) be converted into electricity/fuel, (ii) break down chemical and microbial pollutants, and (iii) help water purification. Therefore, the search for new, efficient, and stable photocatalysts with high application potential is a point of great interest. The photocatalysts must be characterized by the ability to absorb radiation from a wide spectral range of light, the appropriate position of the semiconductor energy bands in relation to the redox reaction potentials, and the long diffusion path of charge carriers, besides the thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical stabilities. Meeting these requirements by semiconductors is very difficult. Therefore, efforts are being made to increase the efficiency of photo processes by changing the electron structure, surface morphology, and crystal structure of semiconductors. This paper reviews the recent literature covering the synthesis and application of nanomaterials in photocatalysis.

Visible light-driven photocatalytic dye degradation under natural sunlight using Sn-doped CdS nanoparticles

Herein, cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles (NPs) and different concentrations (1-5 and 10 wt %) of Sn-doped CdS NPs were prepared by a chemical precipitation method using PVP as a capping agent. The synthesized NPs were characterized using various characteristic techniques such as XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence to investigate structural, morphological, and optical properties. Optical band gap of CdS has been tuned by substitution of Sn with different concentrations. Pure CdS and Sn-doped CdS NPs were used for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under direct sunlight irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the Sn-doped CdS NPs is attributed to the interface actions between Sn and CdS, which significantly decreases the recombination of a photogenerated electron-hole pair. The degradation efficiencies were found to be 91.39% and 97.56% within 180 min for pure CdS and Sn-doped CdS NPs, respectively. Among the catalysts, 4% Sn-doped CdS NPs exhibit best photocatalytic degradation efficiency after 180 min of irradiation.

Preparation and regeneration of iron-modified nanofibres for low-concentration phosphorus-containing wastewater treatment

In this study, nanocellulose (CNFs) was prepared by a mechanical shearing method, a simple and pollution-free process. Iron hydroxide was loaded on nanocellulose, a natural macromolecule derived from bamboo, to produce the second-generation iron-loaded nanocellulose for the removal of low-concentration phosphorus from wastewater. We found that the best modified ferric salt was ferric chloride. When the mass ratio of Fe(OH)3 and CNFs was 1.5 : 1, freeze-drying with liquid nitrogen yielded the best adsorption performance. The adsorption process of Fe(OH)3@CNFs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and belonged to chemical adsorption. Regeneration experiments showed that after 10 cycles of adsorption-regenerations of the adsorbent, the phosphorus adsorption efficiency was still stable at 80% of the initial material. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by the BET surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy and FT-IR. The surface morphology, pore size and elements of materials before and after iron loading were analysed. Compared with other adsorbents, the phosphorus removal performances of the second-generation iron-loaded nanocellulose were superior. Compared with the first-generation material, the second-generation adsorbent is simpler and more environmentally friendly.
