Correlates of Strength and Balance Training Exercises in Older African American Adults

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

This study investigated the behavioral and psychological correlates of strength and balance training (SBT) participation among older African Americans.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

A cross-sectional survey of 90 older African Americans (M = 66.7 ± 8.7 years; 70% female) was conducted to assess correlates of intention to undertake SBT exercises and the number of days that they currently engage in SBT. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the threat appraisal of the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) were used as frameworks for the analyses.

RESULTS

The intention to do SBT exercises was positively associated with favorable attitudes and subjective norm, knowledge about the benefits of SBT, and hours worked per week. The frequency of SBT participation was significantly correlated with behavioral intention, high fear of falling, and a low score on the kinesiophobia scale.

DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS

This study demonstrated the utility of the TPB and PMT's threat appraisal construct in modeling intention and number of days of SBT participation among African American older adults. The study affirmed the link between intention and behavior and between knowledge of the benefits of SBT and intention. Fear of falling's positive association with days of SBT suggests that respondents' saw SBT's efficacy in reducing falls. The unique contributions of this study are the inclusions of kinesiophobia as a correlate and multiple threat appraisals in the PMT. Health promotion interventions should consider the interrelationship among these constructs.

As I see it: a study of African American pastors' views on health and health education in the black church

The Black Church is the only institution that has consistently served the interest of African Americans, and there is no other institution in the African American community that rivals its influence (Camara, 2004). The spiritual well-fare, social support, health, and well-being of its people have been one of its main goals. With health disparities of African Americans still at an alarming rate, the Black Church has used informal education as a means to impart knowledge on health, as well as other non-religious and religious topics. One of the avenues least researched within the Black Church is the pastor's perception of its educational role in health and wellness and its efforts to reduce health discrimination and health disparities between African American and European Americans in the U.S. Since social justice appears as a theme and concern in the traditions of many churches, it is only appropriate that, among other things, the Black Church should address the issue of health education and interventions. The purpose of this study was to explore African American pastors' perceptions of the role of the Black Church in providing health care, health education, and wellness opportunities to African Americans. Many pastors reported their church provided some form of health education and/or health screenings. Their perceptions about the important issues facing their congregants versus African Americans in general were quite similar.

Health-seeking behaviors among HIV-negative, high-risk black women living in an urban southern city

This study explores the HIV health information-seeking behavior among Black women living in a southern urban city in the United States. Interviews were conducted with 50 Black women to explore their HIV health-seeking behavior, self-efficacy, and locus of control. Results indicate that despite the multiple HIV risk factors faced by the women a majority of them did not seek out HIV health information. Policy implications for HIV prevention education are discussed.

The Black church, sexual health, and sexuality: a conceptual framework to promote health through faith-based organizations

There is a growing body of literature that documents the unique impact of black churches on social and health-related changes in the black community. Sexual health and sexuality, however, have long been sources of contention within the institution. The purpose of this article was to refine existing theoretical models that undergird sexual health research in faith-based organizations. The proposed conceptual model explores social-level factors (racism, homophobia, and heterosexism) and church organizational-level factors (beliefs, social trust, norms, and social support/influence). We make an argument in favor of illuminating the negative social-level barriers and affirming the internal cultural supports.
