Human Capital Creation: A Collective Psychological, Social, Organizational and Religious Perspective

Psychological, social, cultural, emotional, and organizational perspectives consistently highlight human capital's importance in the literature. We argue that the collective view of different capitals with self-notion is essential for establishing impression, image, and self-esteem. According to the review findings, religious capital could predict context-specific psychological, cultural, social, emotional, and organizational capital. This acknowledgment can assist academics in better understanding how religion, social psychology, and other capitals co-create value in human capital development. This study includes several possible future paths and notes remarkable qualities that can enhance human capital value development research.

The effect of women's decision-making on child nutritional outcomes in South Africa

Women's decision-making is a phenomenon in children's nutritional outcomes. This study investigated the causal effect of women's decision-making on child nutritional outcomes using a panel dataset from the South African National Income Dynamic Survey (NIDS) from 2014/15-2017. The child's nutritional outcomes comprised three anthropometric measurements, which included weight-for-height, weight-for-age, and height-for-age. The study used variables, which include daily expenditure, large purchases, where children attended school, who lived with the family, and where the household lived, to create a decision-making index using Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). A control function approach (CFA) was used to control for endogeneity issues. Using this approach, the findings suggested that women's decision-making had a significant positive effect on the child's nutritional outcomes. While women's decision-making improves a child's weight-for-age and weight-for-height, the result was inconclusive on the child's height-for-age. The policy implications of these findings indicate that the role of women's empowerment is important and could significantly help in achieving better child nutritional outcomes. Overall, the findings suggest the evaluation of policies that ameliorate gender inequality and children's health and well-being.

Religious social capital and minority health: A concept analysis

OBJECTIVE

Optimizing resources within environments where people live, work, and pray can aid nurses in improving public health. Religion and social capital significantly influence the health of individuals and communities, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. A concept analysis of religious social capital was conducted to clarify how this resource is used in the context of health.

DESIGN AND SAMPLE

Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis method guided this analysis. A search of PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO, using keywords "religious social capital" and "health" yielded 152 publications.

RESULTS

Antecedents were "defined religious social network," "voluntary membership," "shared values," and "trust." Attributes were "relationships (bonding bridging, and linking)," "information exchange and resource sharing," and "reciprocal participation." Consequences were "increased productivity," "increased resources," "better personal and community health," and "trust." A model case of African American women and HIV prevention was included to illustrate how religious social capital can be developed and optimized to promote health.

CONCLUSION

Religious social capital is defined as increased individual and collective capabilities that result from voluntary and reciprocal participation in bonding, bridging, or linking social network relationships and activities. Religious social capital is an accessible resource that can be leveraged to improve minority health.

Religion and Use of Institutional Child Delivery Services: Individual and Contextual Pathways in Mozambique

CONTEXT

Research on institutional child delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa typically focuses on availability and accessibility of health facilities. Cultural factors, including religion, that may facilitate or hinder the use of such services have not been well examined and remain poorly understood.

METHODS

The relationship between religious affiliation and delivery in a health facility was explored using data from a household survey of 1,297 women aged 18-50 and a census of 825 religious congregations, both conducted in a predominantly Christian district in Mozambique in 2008. Multilevel logistic regression analyses were conducted to predict the likelihood of recent institutional delivery according to both individual religious affiliation and the concentration of religious congregations of certain denominations in the community of residence.

RESULTS

Approximately 63% of deliveries occurred in a health facility. The odds of such deliveries were lower among women who belonged to Apostolic churches or had no religious affiliation than among members of Catholic or mainline Protestant churches, net of other factors (odds ratios, 0.5 and 0.6, respectively). In addition, regardless of a woman's religion, the odds that she had an institutional delivery increased by 9% for each additional Catholic or mainline Protestant congregation in her community of residence (1.1).

CONCLUSIONS

Organized religion is associated with critical health outcomes in Mozambique and, potentially, in other Sub-Saharan African contexts. Policymakers should consider designing programs and interventions that promote the use of institutional delivery services among members of religious groups characterized by low use of these services and in areas where such religious groups have a strong presence.
