Posttraumatic Growth: An Analysis of the Concept Based on Rodgers' Concept Development

Post-traumatic growth experiences of emergency and critical care nurses after the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative meta-synthesis

Objective

The previous coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) epidemic inflicted significant psychological trauma on emergency and critical care nurses due to various factors, potentially leading to job burnout. Despite the rise of positive psychology, little is known about the post-traumatic growth experience of these nurses after the pandemic. The aim of this study was to assess the experience of post-traumatic growth among emergency and critical care nurses, in order to provide managerial insights for developing effective strategies and facilitating the transformation of nurses' negative emotions into positive ones.

Design

A qualitative review.

Data sources

PubMed, EBSCO, Medline, Elsvier, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, and Ovid and Chinese databases include the following: Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database (CECDB), VIP Database and China Biomedical Database (CBM).

Review methods

All articles about emergency and critical care nurses' post-traumatic growth after the COVID-19 pandemic were included after searching and screening 13 databases. The meta-synthesis method was used to integrate and evaluate the included literature in qualitative research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) was used as a basis for reporting the review. The literature was selected and evaluated by two researchers, and then meta-integration was used for analysis.

Results

From a total of 11 articles, 90 main results were presented, eight new categories were integrated, and three themes were formed: stress period, adjustment period and growth period. These three themes include eight sub-themes: negative emotion, psychological gap, self adjusting, social support, improvement of personal ability, increased sense of professional belonging, spiritual awakening and extended thinking, look ahead.

Conclusion

Post-traumatic growth in emergency and critical care nurses is dynamic. Managers should monitor the psychological changes experienced by emergency and critical care nurses following traumatic events, offering targeted support at different stages, providing enhanced professional development opportunities, refining management strategies, guiding nurses in self-adjustment and active coping with trauma, and promoting their physical and mental well-being to ensure a positive mindset for effectively addressing future public health crises.

Relationship between rumination and post-traumatic growth in mobile cabin hospital nurses: The mediating role of psychological resilience

Psychological resilience helps individuals to actively respond to various emergencies, but its mediating role between the rumination and post-traumatic growth (PTG) of nurses remains unknown. Our study aimed to explore the extent to which psychological resilience mediates the association between rumination and PTG among nurses working in mobile cabin hospitals. This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 449 medical team members working in mobile cabin hospitals to support the prevention and control of coronavirus disease 2019 in Shanghai, China in 2022. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to assess the correlation between rumination, psychological resilience, and PTG. Structural equation models were used to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience between rumination and PTG. Our study results showed that deliberate rumination directly promoted psychological resilience and PTG and had positive effects on PTG through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. Invasive rumination had no direct effect on PTG. However, it had a negative effect on PTG through the mediating effect of psychological resilience. Together the results of this study indicate that the mediating effect of psychological resilience was significant in the association of rumination and PTG among mobile cabin hospital nurses, with a higher individual psychological resilience level helping nurses to achieve PTG. Therefore, targeted interventions should be implemented to improve nurses' psychological resilience and guide their rapid growth.

Stress management in nurses caring for COVID-19 patients: a qualitative content analysis

BACKGROUND

Being in the frontline of the battle against COVID-19, nurses need to be capable of stress management to maintain their physical and psychological well-being in the face of a variety of stressors. The present study aims to explore the challenges, strategies, and outcomes of stress management in nurses who face and provide care to COVID-19 patients.

METHODS

The present study is a qualitative descriptive work that was conducted in teaching hospitals affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Iran, from June 2020 to March 2021. Sixteen nurses who were in practice in units assigned to COVID-19 patients were selected via purposeful sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured, individual interviews conducted online. The collected data were analyzed using MAXQDA 10 according to the conventional content analysis method suggested by Graneheim and Lundman.

RESULTS

The data collected in the interviews resulted in 14 subcategories under 4 main categories: providing care with uncertainty and anxiety, facing psychological and mental tension, creating a context for support, and experiencing personal-professional growth.

CONCLUSIONS

The nurses caring for COVID-19 patients needed the support of their authorities and families to stress management. Providing a supportive environment through crisis management training, providing adequate equipment and manpower, motivating nurses to achieve psychological growth during the pandemic can help them manage stress.

Perceived social support associated with posttraumatic growth in liver transplant recipients: A cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

There is almost no information about the role of perceived social support, one of the main variables facilitating posttraumatic growth, in liver transplant. For this reason, the issue requires further clarity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived social support and posttraumatic growth in individuals receiving liver transplants.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study was carried out with liver transplant recipients at a hospital in eastern Turkey (N = 117). The data collection instruments included a Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

It was revealed that the participants had high levels of posttraumatic growth (73.05 ± 16.82) and perceived social support (67.75 ± 14.33). A moderate and positive relationship was determined between the mean perceived social support total score and the mean posttraumatic growth total score of the participants (p < 00.01). Perceived social support explained 25.6% of the variance in posttraumatic growth (F = 39.600; p < 0.05; Adjusted R²=0.256), while perceived social support together with primary school-level education and low economic status explained 32.3% of the variance in posttraumatic growth (F = 17.954; p < 0.05; Adjusted R²=0.323).

CONCLUSION

The results on perceived social support revealed that liver transplant recipients had a subjective feeling of being understood, respected and supported by their families more than friends and significant other in a social environment. This study showed that high perceived social support contributes to posttraumatic growth in liver transplant recipients. Apart from perceived social support, other factors affecting posttraumatic growth included individuals' perceptions of their education level and economic situation.
