Abstract
The phenomenon of spin crossover involves coordination complexes with switchable spin states. This spin state change is accompanied by significant geometric changes such that low and high spin forms of a complex are distinct isomers that exist in equilibrium with one another. Typically, spin-state isomers interconvert rapidly and are similar enough in polarity to prevent their independent separation and isolation. We report here the first example, to our knowledge, of cobalt(II) spin-state isomers that can be physically separated. The reaction of Mo2(dpa)4 (dpa = 2,2'-dipyridylamide) with CoBr2 produces a mixture of two heterometallic compounds with a linear, metal-metal-bonded Mo[Formula: see text]Mo-Co chain. The complexes, SC-[BrMo2(dpa)4Co]Br (SC-2) and HS-[BrMo2(dpa)4CoBr] (HS-2), have identical compositions (Mo2Co(dpa)4Br2) but different ground spin states and coordination geometries of the Co(II) ion. In the solid state, SC-2 undergoes incomplete spin crossover from an S = 1/2 state to an S = 3/2 state, and HS-2 has a high spin, S = 3/2, ground state, as confirmed by SQUID magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy. Crystallographic analyses of SC-2 and HS-2 show that SC-2 has an elongated Co-Br distance relative to HS-2 and is best described as the salt [BrMo2(dpa)4Co]Br. This limits SC-2's solubility in nonpolar solvents and allows for the physical separation of the two isomers. Solution studies of SC-2 and HS-2 indicate that SC-2 and HS-2 interconvert slowly relative to the NMR time scale. Additional solution-state EPR and UV-vis absorption measurements demonstrate that the choice of solvent polarity determines the predominant isomer present in solution.

Abstract
Bi-stable charge-neutral iron(ii) spin-crossover (SCO) complexes are a class of switchable molecular materials proposed for molecule-based switching and memory applications. In this study, we report on the SCO behavior of a series of iron(ii) complexes composed of rationally designed 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (ptp) ligands. The powder forms of [Fe2+(R-ptp-)2]0 complexes tethered with less-bulky substituents-R = H (1), R = CH2OH (2), and R = COOCH3 (3; previously reported)-at the 4-position of the pyridine ring of the ptp skeleton showed abrupt and hysteretic SCO at or above room temperature (RT), whereas complex 5 featuring a bulky pyrene substituent showed incomplete and gradual SCO behavior. The role of intermolecular interactions, lattice solvent, and electronic nature of the chemical substituents (R) in tuning the SCO of the complexes is elucidated.

Abstract
Molecular spin-crossover (SCO) compounds are attractive for information storage and photovoltaic technologies. We compared two prototypic SCO compounds with Fe(II)N6 (1, [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2], with phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) or Fe(III)S6 (2, [Fe(dedtc)3], with dedtc = N,N'-diethyldithiocarbamate) centers, which show abrupt (1) or gradual (2) thermally induced SCO, using K-edge X-ray absorption and Kβ emission spectroscopy (XAS/XES) in a 8-315 K temperature range, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), and density functional theory (DFT). Core-to-valence and valence-to-core electronic transitions in the XAS/XES spectra and bond lengths change from XRD provided benchmark data, verifying the adequacy of the TPSSh/TZVP DFT approach for the description of low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) species. Determination of the spin densities, charge distributions, bonding descriptors, and valence-level configurations, as well as similar experimental and calculated enthalpy changes (ΔH), suggested that the varying metal-ligand bonding properties and deviating electronic structures converge to similar enthalpic contributions to the free-energy change (ΔG) and thus presumably are not decisive for the differing SCO behavior of 1 and 2. Rather, SCO seems to be governed by vibrational contributions to the entropy changes (ΔS) in both complexes. Intra- and intermolecular interactions in crystals of 1 and 2 were identified by atoms-in-molecules analysis. Thermal excitation of individual dedtc ligand vibrations accompanies the gradual SCO in 2. In contrast, extensive inter- and intramolecular phen/NCS vibrational mode coupling may be an important factor in the cooperative SCO behavior of 1.
