Abstract
A study of the liquid-liquid extraction of ReO4- anions from hydrochloric acid solutions using the ionic liquid Aliquat 336 (QCl: trialkyl(C8-C10)methylammonium chloride) via the well-known method of slope analysis along with the determination of the process parameters is presented. This study employs CCl4, CHCl3 and C6H12 as diluents. This study was carried out at room temperature (22 ± 2) °C and an aqueous/organic volumetric ratio of unity. The ligand effect on the complexation properties of ReO4- is quantitatively assessed in different organic media. The organic extract in chloroform media is examined through 1H, 13C and 15N NMR analysis as well as the HRMS technique and UV-Vis spectroscopy in order to view the anion exchange and ligand coordination in the organic phase solution. Final conclusions are given highlighting the role of the molecular diluent in complexation processes and selectivity involving ionic liquid ligands and various metal s-, p-, d- and f-cations. ReO4- ions have shown one of the best solvent extraction behaviors compared to other ions. For instance, the Aliquat 336 derivative bearing Cl- functions shows strongly enhanced extraction as well as pronounced separation abilities towards ReO4-.

Abstract
Solvent extraction of Zr(IV) in an undiluted phosphonium based ionic liquid (IL) and its selective separation from Ln(III) and An(III) has been investigated in the present study. Eu(III)/Am(III) were chosen as the representative Ln(III)/An(III). Tri(hexyl)tetradecylphosphonium nitrate ([P66614][NO3]) was chosen as IL phase and the feed phase was nitric acid containing the target metal ions. The extraction process was accomplished at different experimental parameters such as the concentration of initial nitric acid, initial feed metal concentration and equilibration time to explore the extractability of the proposed IL towards Zr(IV). The efficient extraction of Zr(IV) without any external ligand in IL phase and negligible extraction of Eu(III)/Am(III) were distinctly discerned leading to noteworthy separation factors for Zr(IV). The loading experiment revealed a noticeable growth of equilibrium concentrations of Zr(IV) in IL phase while that of Eu(III) was very less irrespective of the initial feed concentration. The association of two IL moieties in the complex formation process has been inferred. Nitrate ion was found to be superior as IL anion in terms of metal loading in comparison to other anions. Thermodynamics of extraction and the stripping of the loaded Zr(IV) from IL phase using a suitable stripping solution have also been investigated.

Abstract
Lanthanide-ligand complexes are key components of technological applications, and their properties depend on their structures in the solution phase, which are challenging to resolve experimentally or computationally. The coordination structure of the Eu3+ ion in different coordination environments in acetonitrile is examined using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. AIMD simulations are conducted for the solvated Eu3+ ion in acetonitrile, both with or without a terpyridyl ligand, and in the presence of either triflate or nitrate counterions. EXAFS spectra are calculated directly from AIMD simulations and then compared to experimentally measured EXAFS spectra. In acetonitrile solution, both nitrate and triflate anions are shown to coordinate directly to the Eu3+ ion forming either ten- or eight-coordinate solvent complexes where the counterions are binding as bidentate or monodentate structures, respectively. Coordination of a terpyridyl ligand to the Eu3+ ion limits the available binding sites for the solvent and anions. In certain cases, the terpyridyl ligand excludes any solvent binding and limits the number of coordinated anions. The solution structure of the Eu-terpyridyl complex with nitrate counterions is shown to have a similar arrangement of Eu3+ coordinating molecules as the crystal structure. This study illustrates how a combination of AIMD and EXAFS can be used to determine how ligands, solvent, and counterions coordinate with the lanthanide ions in solution.

Abstract
Solvent extraction is often applied to separate and purify metals on an industrial scale. Nevertheless, solvent extraction processes are challenging to develop because of the complex chemistry involved. For basic extractants, much of the chemical behavior remains poorly understood due to the conditions far from thermodynamic ideality. To elucidate the extraction mechanism, we studied the speciation and extraction of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) from chloride, bromide, and iodide media by using a basic extractant consisting of a trioctylmethylammonium cation and, respectively, a chloride, bromide, or iodide anion. These systems were specifically selected to increase the understanding of the less-studied bromide and iodide media and to focus on the effect of hard-soft interactions on solvent extraction systems. It was observed that, in general, a metal is more efficiently extracted when its hydration in the aqueous phase is lower and its stabilization in the organic phase is higher. In the investigated systems, these conditions are obtained by forming metal complexes with a lower charge density by coordinating the right number of halide anions and by selecting a halide with a lower charge density. In the organic phase, the stability of the metal complex can be increased by forming strong metal-anion bonds and by decreasing the water content. These insights might be of interest in the development and optimization of separation schemes for metals.

Abstract
The design and optimization of solvent extraction processes for metal separations are challenging tasks due to the large number of adjustable parameters. A quantitative predictive solvent extraction model could help to determine the optimal parameters for solvent extraction flow sheets, but such predictive models are not available yet. The main difficulties for such models are the large deviations from ideal thermodynamic behavior in both the aqueous and organic phases due to high solute concentrations. We constructed a molecular thermodynamic model for the extraction of CoCl2 from different chloride salts by 0.2 mol L-1 trioctylmethylammonium chloride in toluene using the OLI mixed-solvent electrolyte (OLI-MSE) framework. This was accomplished by analyzing the water and hydrochloric acid content of the organic phase, measuring the water activity of the system, and using metal complex speciation and solvent extraction data. The full extractant concentration range cannot be modeled by the OLI-MSE framework as this framework lacks a description for reversed micelle formation. Nevertheless, salting effects and the behavior of hydrochloric acid can be accurately described with the presented extraction model, without determining specific Co(II)-salt cation interaction parameters. The resulting model shows that the salting effects originate from indirect salt cation-solvent interactions that influence the availability of water in the aqueous and organic phases.

Abstract
Neodymium and dysprosium can be efficiently separated by solvent extraction, using the neutral extractant Cyanex 923, if the conventional aqueous feed phase is largely replaced by the green polar organic solvent polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG 200). While pure aqueous and pure PEG 200 solutions in the presence of LiCl or HCl were not able to separate the two rare earth elements, high separation factors were observed when extraction was performed from PEG 200 chloride solutions with addition of small amounts of water. This addition of water bridges the gap between traditional hydrometallurgy and novel solvometallurgy and overcomes the challenges faced in both methods. The effect of different variables was investigated: water content, chloride concentration, type of chloride salt, Cyanex 923 concentration, scrubbing agent. A Job plot revealed the extraction stoichiometry is DyCl3·4L, where L is Cyanex 923. The McCabe-Thiele diagram for dysprosium extraction showed that complete extraction of this metal can be achieved by a 3-stage counter-current solvent extraction process, leaving neodymium behind in the raffinate. Finally, a conceptual flow sheet for the separation of neodymium and dysprosium including extraction, scrubbing, stripping, and regeneration steps was presented. The nonaqueous solvent extraction process presented in this paper can contribute to efficient recycling of rare earths from end-of-life neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets.

Abstract
The separation of metals by liquid-liquid extraction largely relies on the affinity of metals to the extractants, which normally reside in the organic (less polar) phase because of their high hydrophobicity. Following a different route, using aminopoly(carboxylic acid)s (e.g., EDTA) as complexing agents in the aqueous (more polar) phase was found to enhance metal separations by selectively complexing metal cations. In this study, we demonstrate that, hydrophilic ionic liquids and analogues in the more polar phase could also selectively complex with metal cations and hence enhance metal separations. As an example, Cyanex 923 (a mixture of trialkyl phosphine oxides) dissolved in p-cymene extracts CoCl2 more efficiently than SmCl3 from a chloride ethylene glycol (EG) solution. However, when tetraethylammonium chloride is added into the EG solution, CoCl2 is selectively held back (only 1.2% extraction at 3.0 M tetraethylammonium chloride), whereas the extraction of SmCl3 is unaffected (89.9% extraction), leading to reversed metal separation with a separation factor of Sm(III)/Co(II) > 700. The same principle is applicable to a range of hydrophilic ionic liquids, which can be used as complexing agents in the more polar phase to enhance the separations of various metal mixtures by liquid-liquid extraction.
