Tribological properties of hierarchical structure artificial joints with poly acrylic acid (AA) - poly acrylamide (AAm) hydrogel and Ti6Al4V substrate

Highly effective removal of basic fuchsin dye using carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan grafted acrylic acid-acrylamide/montmorillonite composite hydrogel

This study developed a nanocomposite hydrogel, CAM4-MMT, for efficiently removing basic fuchsin dye from water. The hydrogel was prepared by grafting a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) onto carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CMKGM), and doped with montmorillonite (MMT), exhibited excellent thermal stability, a porous inner structure, large specific surface area (1.407 m2/g), and high swelling capacity (107.3 g/g). The hydrogel achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 694.1 mg/g and a removal rate of 99.5 %. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described the adsorption process. Regeneration and reuse tests confirmed that the hydrogel has excellent recyclability. In conclusion, the CAM4-MMT composite hydrogel efficiently removed basic fuchsin from water solutions, offering a new scheme for eliminating basic fuchsin using natural polysaccharides with promising applications.

Hydrogel Coatings of Implants for Pathological Bone Repair

Hydrogels are well-suited for biomedical applications due to their numerous advantages, such as excellent bioactivity, versatile physical and chemical properties, and effective drug delivery capabilities. Recently, hydrogel coatings have developed to functionalize bone implants which are biologically inert and cannot withstand the complex bone tissue repair microenvironment. These coatings have shown promise in addressing unique and pressing medical needs. This review begins with the major functionalized performance and interfacial bonding strategy of hydrogel coatings, with a focus on the novel external field response properties of the hydrogel. Recent advances in the fabrication strategies of hydrogel coatings and their use in the treatment of pathologic bone regeneration are highlighted. Finally, challenges and emerging trends in the evolution and application of physiological environment-responsive and external electric field-responsive hydrogel coatings for bone implants are discussed.

Progress in Surface Modification of Titanium Implants by Hydrogel Coatings

Although titanium and titanium alloys have become the preferred materials for various medical implants, surface modification technology still needs to be strengthened in order to adapt to the complex physiological environment of the human body. Compared with physical or chemical modification methods, biochemical modification, such as the introduction of functional hydrogel coating on implants, can fix biomolecules such as proteins, peptides, growth factors, polysaccharides, or nucleotides on the surface of the implants, so that they can directly participate in biological processes; regulate cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation; and improve the biological activity on the surface of the implants. This review begins with a look at common substrate materials for hydrogel coatings on implant surfaces, including natural polymers such as collagen, gelatin, chitosan, and alginate, and synthetic materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene glycol, and polyacrylic acid. Then, the common construction methods of hydrogel coating (electrochemical method, sol-gel method and layer-by-layer self-assembly method) are introduced. Finally, five aspects of the enhancement effect of hydrogel coating on the surface bioactivity of titanium and titanium alloy implants are described: osseointegration, angiogenesis, macrophage polarization, antibacterial effects, and drug delivery. In this paper, we also summarize the latest research progress and point out the future research direction. After searching, no previous relevant literature reporting this information was found.

Integrated supercapacitor with self-healing, arbitrary deformability and anti-freezing based on gradient interface structure from electrode to electrolyte

Flexible supercapacitors have attracted more and more attention because of their promising applications in wearable electronics, however, it is still important to harmonize their mechanical and electrochemical properties for practical applications. In the present work, a seamless transition between polyaniline (PANI) electrode and NH₄VO₃_FeSO₄ dual redox-mediated gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is presented through in situ formation of gradient interface structure. Multiple physical interactions make the GPE excellent mechanical and self-healing properties. Meanwhile, double role functions of Fe²⁺ ions greatly relieve the traditional contradiction between mechanical and electrochemical properties of GPE. Moreover, benefiting from the structure and reversible redox reactions of VO^3- and Fe²⁺, the integrated supercapacitor delivers an exceptional specific capacitance of 441.8 mF/cm², a high energy density of 63.1 μWh/cm², remarkable cyclic stability. Simultaneously, the gradient structure from PANI electrode to GPE greatly improves the electrode/electrolyte interface compatibility and ion transport, which endows the supercapacitor with stable electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the supercapacitor well-maintains the specific capacitance even at -20 °C with over 89.19 % retention after 6 cutting/healing cycles. The gradient interface structure design will promote the development of high-performance supercapacitor.

Progressive use of nanocomposite hydrogels materials for regeneration of damaged cartilage and their tribological mechanical properties

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a non-inflammatory deteriorating debilitating state that bring about remarkable health and economic issues globally. Break down/deterioration of the articular cartilage (AC) is one of the pathologic characteristics of osteoarthritis (OA). Nanocomposite hydrogels (NCH) materials are evolving as a potential class of scaffolds for organ regeneration and tissue engineering. In recent years, innovative hydrogels specifically loaded with nanoparticles have been developed and synthesized with the goal of changing conventional cartilage treatments. The detailed development of a tailored nanocomposite hydrogels (NCH) material utilized for tissue engineering is presented in this review study. Also, the mechanical characteristics, particularly the tribological behavior, of these produced NCH have been highlighted. Large amounts of research and data on the hydrogel substance utilized in cartilage healing are summarized in the current review study. When determining future research gaps in the area of hydrogels for cartilage regeneration, such information will provide researchers an advantage to further develop NCH.

In-Capillary Photodeposition of Glyphosate-Containing Polyacrylamide Nanometer-Thick Films

The present research reports on in-water, site-specific photodeposition of glyphosate (GLP)-containing polyacrylamide (PAA-GLP) nanometer-thick films (nanofilms) on an inner surface of fused silica (fused quartz) microcapillaries presilanized with trimethoxy(octen-7-yl)silane (TMOS). TMOS was chosen because of the vinyl group presence in its structure, enabling its participation in the (UV light)-activated free-radical polymerization (UV-FRP) after its immobilization on a fused silica surface. The photodeposition was conducted in an aqueous (H₂O/ACN; 3:1, v/v) solution, using UV-FRP (λ = 365 nm) of the acrylamide (AA) functional monomer, the N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) (BAA) cross-linking monomer, GLP, and the azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) UV-FRP initiator. Acetonitrile (ACN) was used as the porogen and the solvent to dissolve monomers and GLP. Because of the micrometric diameters of microcapillaries, the silanization and photodeposition procedures were first optimized on fused silica slides. The introduction of TMOS, as well as the formation of PAA and PAA-GLP nanofilms, was determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) spectroscopy, and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy. Particularly, AFM and SEM-EDX measurements determined nanofilms' thickness and GLP content, respectively, whereas in-depth confocal (micro-Raman spectroscopy)-assisted imaging of PAA- and PAA-GLP-coated microcapillary inner surfaces confirmed the successful photodeposition. Moreover, we examined the GLP impact on polymer gelation by monitoring hydration in a hydrogel and a dried powder PAA-GLP. Our study demonstrated the usefulness of the in-capillary micro-Raman spectroscopy imaging and in-depth profiling of GLP-encapsulated PAA nanofilms. In the future, our simple and inexpensive procedure will enable the fabrication of polymer-based microfluidic chemosensors or adsorptive-separating devices for GLP detection, determination, and degradation.

Articular and Artificial Cartilage, Characteristics, Properties and Testing Approaches-A Review

The design and manufacture of artificial tissue for knee joints have been highlighted recently among researchers which necessitates an apt approach for its assessment. Even though most re-searches have focused on specific mechanical or tribological tests, other aspects have remained underexplored. In this review, elemental keys for design and testing artificial cartilage are dis-cussed and advanced methods addressed. Articular cartilage structure, its compositions in load-bearing and tribological properties of hydrogels, mechanical properties, test approaches and wear mechanisms are discussed. Bilayer hydrogels as a niche in tissue artificialization are presented, and recent gaps are assessed.
