Abstract
Ground water contamination by radioactive elements has become a critical issue that can pose significant threats to human health. Adsorption is the most promising approach for the removal of radioactive elements owing to its simplicity, effectiveness, and easy operation. Among the plethora of functional adsorbents, graphene oxide and its derivatives are recognized for their excellent potential as adsorbent with the unique 2D structure, high surface area, and intercalated functional groups. To learn more about their practical applicability, the procedures involved in their preparation and functionalization are described with the microscopic removal mechanism by GO functionalities across varying solution pH. The performance of these adsorbents is assessed further in terms of the basic performance metrics such as partition coefficient. Overall, this article is expected to provide valuable insights into the current status of graphene-based adsorbents developed for uranium removal with a guidance for the future directions in this research field.

Abstract
Abstract
In this work, diethylenetriamine pentamethylenephosphonic acid (DTPMP) was ultilized into preparing of Zr(IV) organophosphates hybrids (Zr-DTPMP-x, x was the molar ratio of Zr(IV)/DTPMP in the synthetic process, x = 0.5, 1, 2, and 3) using a hydrothermal method. The physical and chemical properties of Zr-DTPMP-x were characterized by SEM&EDS, FT-IR, XRD, Zeta potential, XPS, TGA and contact angle analysis. Moreover, the adsorptive performances of Zr-DTPMP-x for U(VI) were investigated. The adsorption results showed that the optimum molar ratio of Zr(IV) to phosphine, pH, equilibrium time, and dosage was 0.5, 4.0, 180 min, and 10 mg, respectively. Besides, the adsorption of U(VI) was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips isothermal model. Moreover, the adsorption capacity determined by Sips isothermal model was 181.34 mg g−1 for Zr-DTPMP-0.5. Furthermore, the adsorptive selectivity of Zr-DTPMP-0.5 for U(VI) was superior than the others. Zr-DTPMP-0.5 may be a powerful candidate for diminishing the contamination of U(VI).

Abstract
Two superior adsorbents, namely bentonite and graphene oxide (GO), were hybridised to study the removal of copper and nickel ions from synthetic and industrial wastewater. The as-synthesised GO, bentonite/GO and bentonite were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis. The factors influencing the adsorption behaviours including contact time, initial solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration of metal ions, temperature and adsorbent dosage were systematically investigated by batch equilibrium method. The adsorption equilibrium for copper and nickel onto bentonite was attained in 90 min while equilibrium was reached in 60 min on bentonite/GO. The adsorption of copper and nickel was pH-dependent in the range from pH 2 to pH 7 and from pH 2 to pH 8. Pseudo-first-order kinetic model excellently described the adsorption of copper and nickel onto bentonite and bentonite/GO. The equilibrium adsorption data was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacity was 248.9 mg/g, 558.4 mg/g, 215.8 mg/g and 402.5 mg/g for bentonite-copper, bentonite/GO-copper, bentonite-nickel and bentonite/GO-nickel adsorption systems, respectively. The bentonite/GO composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of both cations from synthetic wastewater than pure bentonite owning to the synergistic effect between bentonite and GO. In all adsorption studies, copper was more efficiently removed than nickel due to its higher tendency to form bond with adsorbent surfaces. The adsorption of copper and nickel on bentonite/GO was mainly due to cation exchange, intermolecular and electrostatic interactions and physisorption dominated the adsorption processes. The practical application of bentonite/GO on adsorption of copper was investigated using real wastewater and its removal efficiency was beyond 98%. The excellent adsorption performances of composites for the copper and nickel removal from wastewater demonstrated its significant potential for pollution mitigations.

Abstract
Although pesticides are widely used in agriculture, industry and households, they pose a risk to human health and ecosystems. Based on target organisms, the main types of pesticides are herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, of which herbicides accounted for 46% of the total pesticide usage worldwide. The movement of pesticides into water bodies occurs through run-off, spray drift, leaching, and sub-surface drainage, all of which have negative impacts on aquatic environments and humans. We sought to define the critical factors affecting the fluxes of contaminants into receiving waters. We also aimed to specify the feasibility of using sorbents to remove pesticides from waterways. In Karun River in Iran (1.21 × 105 ng/L), pesticide concentrations are above regulatory limits. The concentration of pesticides in fish can reach 26.1 × 103 μg/kg, specifically methoxychlor herbicide in Perca fluviatilis in Lithuania. During the last years, research has focused on elimination of organic pollutants, such as pesticides, from aqueous solution. Pesticide adsorption onto low-cost materials can effectively remediate contaminated waters. In particular, nanoparticle adsorbents and carbon-based adsorbents exhibit high performance (nearly 100%) in removing pesticides from water bodies.

Abstract
With the rapid growth of industrialization, water bodies are polluted with heavy metals and toxic pollutants. In pursuit of removal of toxic pollutants from the aqueous environment, researchers have been developed many techniques. Among these techniques, magnetic separation has caught research attention, as this approach has shown excellent performance in the removal of toxic pollutants from aqueous solutions. However, magnetic graphene oxide based nanocomposites (MGO) possess unique physicochemical properties including excellent magnetic characteristics, high specific surface area, surface active sites, high chemical stability, tunable shape and size, and the ease with which they can be modified or functionalized. As results of their multi-functional properties, affordability, and magnetic separation capability, MGO's have been widely used in the removal of heavy metals, radionuclides and organic dyes from the aqueous environment, and are currently attracting much attention. This paper provides insights into preparation strategies and approaches of MGO's utilization for the removal of pollutants for sustainable water purification. It also reviews the preparation of magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposites and primary characterization instruments required for the evaluation of structural, chemical and physical functionalities of synthesized magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposites. Finally, we summarized some research challenges to accelerate the synthesized MGO's as adsorbents for the treatment of water pollutants such as toxic and radioactive metal ions and organic and agricultural pollutants.

Abstract
Uranium is a hazardous and radioactive element. Effective removal of uranium from wastewater stream requires advanced functional materials and reliable technologies. Red mud is a type of low-cost adsorbent which is widely used in the adsorption process. In the present work, we successfully modified the raw red mud to gain a series of highly efficient sorbents for uranium removal. They are nitric acid dealkalized red mud (DRM), aluminum nitrate modified red mud (ARM), and ferric nitrate modified red mud (FRM). The adsorption efficiencies of uranium(VI) by DRM, ARM, and FRM were 74.50, 95.56, and 98.75% in their optimal immobilization regions, respectively. The chemisorption of uranium dominates the adsorption process of FRM, while as to physical adsorption dominates the adsorption process of ARM and DRM. Both DRM and ARM reached their maximum adsorption capacities at 10 min while that for FRM occurred at 30 min. FRM performed much stronger anti-interference ability to the influence of carbonate and calcium. The outstanding adsorption ability of these modified red muds is mainly due to the enhancement of ion exchange, co-precipitation, and electrostatic attraction by red mud's active components and functional groups.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic ion-exchangers were obtained by incorporation of zirconium hydrophosphate into gel-like strongly acidic polymer matrix by means of precipitation from the solution of zirconium oxychloride with phosphoric acid. The approach for purposeful control of a size of the incorporated particles has been developed based on Ostwald-Freundich equation. This equation has been adapted for precipitation in ion exchange materials. Both single nanoparticles (2-20 nm) and their aggregates were found in the polymer. Regulation of salt or acid concentration allows us to decrease size of the aggregates approximately in 10 times. Smaller particles are formed in the resin, which possess lower exchange capacity. Sorption of U(VI) cations from the solution containing also hydrochloride acid was studied. Exchange capacity of the composites is ≈2 times higher in comparison with the pristine resin. The organic-inorganic sorbents show higher sorption rate despite chemical interaction of sorbed ions with functional groups of the inorganic constituent: the models of reaction of pseudo-first or pseudo-second order can be applied. In general, decreasing in size of incorporated particles provides acceleration of ion exchange. The composites can be regenerated completely, this gives a possibility of their multiple use.

Abstract
For the removal of uranium(VI) (U(VI)) and thorium(IV) (Th(IV)), graphene oxide based inverse spinel nickel ferrite (GONF) nanocomposite and reduced graphene oxide based inverse spinel nickel ferrite (rGONF) nanocomposite were prepared by co-precipitation of GO with nickel and iron salts in one pot. The spectral characterization analyses revealed that GONF and rGONF have a porous surface morphology with an average particle size of 41.41nm and 32.16nm, respectively. The magnetic property measurement system (MPMS) studies confirmed the formation of ferromagnetic GONF and superparamagnetic rGONF. The adsorption kinetics studies found that the pseudo-second-order kinetics was well tune to the U(VI) and Th(IV) adsorption. The results of adsorption isotherms showed that the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) were due to the monolayer on homogeneous surface of the GONF and rGONF. The adsorptions of both U(VI) and Th(IV) were increased with increasing system temperature from 293 to 333±2K. The thermodynamic studies reveal that the U(VI) and Th(IV) adsorption onto GONF and rGONF was endothermic. GONF and rGONF, which could be separated by external magnetic field, were recycled and re-used for up to five cycles without any significant loss of adsorption capacity.

Abstract
Graphene is a new carbon-based material that is of interest in separation science. Graphene has extraordinary properties including nano size, high surface area, thermal and chemical stability, and excellent adsorption affinity to pollutants. Its adsorption mechanisms are through non-covalent interactions (π-π stacking, electrostatic interactions, and H-bonding) for organic compounds and covalent interactions for metal ions. These properties have led to graphene-based material becoming a desirable adsorbent in a popular sample preparation technique known as solid phase extraction (SPE). Numerous studies have been published on graphene applications in recent years, but few review papers have focused on its applications in analytical chemistry. This article focuses on recent preconcentration of trace elements, organic compounds, and biological species using SPE-based graphene, graphene oxide, and their modified forms. Solid phase microextraction and micro SPE (µSPE) methods based on graphene are discussed.

Abstract
Adsorption technology is widely considered as the most promising and robust method of purifying water at low cost and with high-efficiency. Carbon-based materials have been extensively explored for adsorption applications because of their good chemical stability, structural diversity, low density, and suitability for large scale production. Graphene--a single atomic layer of graphite--is the newest member in the family of carbon allotropes and has emerged as the "celeb" material of the 21st century. Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov, Geim and co-workers, graphene has attracted increased attention in a wide range of applications due to its unprecedented electrical, mechanical, thermal, optical and transport properties. Graphene's infinitely high surface-to-volume ratio has resulted in a large number of investigations to study its application as a potential adsorbent for water purification. More recently, other graphene related materials such as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and few-layered graphene oxide sheets, as well as nanocomposites of graphene materials have also emerged as a promising group of adsorbent for the removal of various environmental pollutants from waste effluents. In this review article, we present a synthesis of the current knowledge available on this broad and versatile family of graphene nanomaterials for removal of dyes, potentially toxic elements, phenolic compounds and other organic chemicals from aquatic systems. The challenges involved in the development of these novel nanoadsorbents for decontamination of wastewaters have also been examined to help identify future directions for this emerging field to continue to grow.
