Development and characterization of non-treated and chemically modified olive pomace biosorbents to remove Ce(III) ions from aqueous solutions

Cerium biosorption onto alginate/vermiculite-based particles functionalized with ionic imprinting: Kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamic, and reuse studies

Cerium is an essential element for several applications in industry, therefore, recovering it from secondary sources is a promising strategy from an economic and environmental perspective. For this purpose, biosorption is a low-cost and effective alternative. The present work evaluated the recovery of Ce³⁺ from aqueous solutions using alginate/vermiculite-based particles (ALEV) functionalized by ionic imprinting. From the kinetic assays, it was verified that the uptake of Ce³⁺ followed the pseudo-second-order model and was mainly controlled by external diffusion. The Langmuir model better described the equilibrium data, and a maximum biosorption capacity of 0.671 mmol/g at 45 °C was attained. The evaluation of the thermodynamic quantities revealed that the process occurs spontaneously and endothermically. The particles reuse and Ce³⁺ recovery were achieved using 0.1 mol/L HCl or 1.0 mol/L CaCl₂ solutions for up to four cycles of biosorption/desorption. The biosorbent was characterized before and posted Ce³⁺ biosorption to investigate the morphology, textural properties, crystallinity, thermal resistance, composition, and functional groups of the biosorbent.

Biosorption kinetics of cerium(III) and cobalt(II) from liquid wastes using individual bacterial species isolated from low-level liquid radioactive wastes

The existence of toxic heavy metals in the aquatic environment has emphasized a considerable exigency to develop several multifunctional biosorbents for their removal. Herein, three individual bacterial species of Cellulosimicrobium cellulans, Bacillus coagulans, and Microbacterium testaceum were successfully isolated from low-level liquid radioactive wastes. Their loading capacities towards cerium and cobalt metal ions were inclusivity inspected under variable operational parameters of pH, primary pollutant concentration, interaction time, temperature, stirring speed, and biosorbent dosage. By analyzing the influence of solution pH, concentration, temperature, biosorbent mass, and agitation speed on the biosorption kinetics, the biosorption process confirms pseudo-second-order kinetic, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich equation. Remarkably, the isolated Microbacterium testaceum exhibited high loading capacities reaching 68.1 mg g^-1, and 49.6 mg g^-1 towards Ce(III), and Co(II) ions, respectively, at the initial concentration of 2.8 mM, pH 4.5, and 25 °C. Overall, the isolated bacterial species can potentially be offered up as a promising scavenger for Ce(III) and Co(II) from liquid waste effluents.

Ion exchange capacity of synthetic zeolite L: a promising way for cerium recovery

The increasing rare earth elements' (REE) demand to meet the market request and the current political scenario show that it is essential to find good solutions to recover these elements from waste (both industrial and mining). Zeolites are microporous materials with high cation exchange capacity, up to now only little investigated for REE recycle. Here, we propose the use of NH4+-exchanged zeolite L for Ce recovery from a very diluted solution (0.002 M), mimicking the Ce3+ concentration of the liquors deriving from the leaching of spent catalysts. The aim of this work is twofold: (i) to investigate the exploitability of zeolite L as cation exchanger in the Ce recovery; and (ii) to determine the best working conditions. The investigated process consists of a coupled cation exchange: (1) in the first exchange the NH4+ cations - present in the zeolite porosities - are exchanged with the Ce3+ ions in the solution; and (2) in the second experiment, the Ce3+ trapped into the zeolite is recovered through a further exchange with NH4. The best working conditions for Ce3+ exchange of NH4-zeolite L are: batch system, liquid/solid ratio equal to 90 mL/g and 180 mL/g, 24 h of contact at 25 °C. The resulting Ce adsorption capacity (qt) is equal to ~25 mg/g and ~39 mg/g and the removal efficiency 100% and 77% for the two tested liquid/solid ratios, respectively. The kinetics was proved to be fast and consistent with industrial timing; no energy cost for temperature setting is required; and the acid pH (~4) of the solutions does not affect the zeolite structure stability and its exchange performance. It has been demonstrated that the zeolite framework is not affected by the exchange so that the same absorbent material can be employed many times.

Sorption of Ce(III) on magnetic/olive pomace nanocomposite: isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Used for various high-tech applications, cerium is an important rare earth element (REE), and its sorption on various solids also is important considering purification and environmental and radioactive waste disposal. In view of the industrial and environmental terms, it is important to remove Ce³⁺ ions from an aqueous solution. Magnetite and magnetic olive pomace nanocomposite were thus fabricated by a partial reduction co-precipitation approach. The structure and morphological properties of the prepared nano-material and nanocomposite were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and BET surface area analysis. The effects of parameters such as solution pH, contact time, initial Ce(III) concentration, and temperature on the sorption efficiency were studied. The maximum sorption capacities of the magnetite (MNP) and magnetic olive pomace nanocomposite (MOP) for Ce(III) ions were found to be 76.92 and 90.90 mgg^-1, respectively. The sorption data fitted well with Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the sorption was non-spontaneous and endothermic. This paper reports the preparation of MNP and novel MOP and their application as efficient, sustainable adsorbents alternative to commercial ones for adsorption of cerium ions from aqueous solution.
