Use of silver–bentonite in sorption of chloride and iodide ions

Fluorescent cellulose nanofibrils-based hydrogel incorporating MIL-125-NH2 for effective adsorption and detection of iodide ion

To remove iodine ion (I-) from wastewater, a novel hydrogel, the fluorescent cellulose nanofibrils-based hydrogel (FCNH), was synthesized to enable both detection and adsorption of I-. The FCNH comprised cellulose nanofibrils (CNs), silver nanoclusters (AgNCs), and MIL-125-NH2. It exhibited an excellent adsorption capacity for I-, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 373.7 mg/g, fitting both the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models. Additionally, FCNH displayed excellent regeneration properties, retaining 88.0 % of its initial adsorption capacity after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Functioning as a fluorescent sensor, the synthesized FCNH enabled the detection of I- through dynamic quenching, with linear ranges of 5 to 200 mg/L and 0.2 to 1.0 μg/L, and a determination limit of 0.11 μg/L. Analysis of the adsorption and detection mechanisms revealed that FCNH's outstanding performance arose from its 3D porous structure comprising CNs, AgNCs, and MIL-125-NH2. Economic analysis indicated that FCNH was inexpensive compared to commercially available activated carbon. Thus, FCNH demonstrated significant potential as an economical and reusable adsorbent for iodine ion removal.

Removal of chloride ion from drinking water using Ag NPs-Modified bentonite: Characterization and optimization of effective parameters by response surface methodology-central composite design

The presence of chloride ion as an environmental pollutant is having a devastating and irreversible effect on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. To ensure safe and clean drinking water, it is vital to remove this substance using non-toxic and eco-friendly methods. This study presents a novel and highly efficient Ag NPs-modified bentonite adsorbent for removing chloride ion, a common environmental pollutant, from drinking water using a facile approach. The surface chemical properties and morphology of the pristine Na-bentonite and Ag NPs-Modified bentonite were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and zeta potential (ζ). To achieve maximum chloride ion removal, the effects of experimental parameters, including adsorbent dosage (1-9 g/L), chloride ion concentration (100-900 mg/L), and reaction time (5-25 h), were examined using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The chloride ion removal of 90% was obtained at optimum conditions (adsorbent dosage: 7 g/L, chloride ion concentration: 500 mg/L, and reaction time: 20 h). The adsorption isotherm and kinetics results indicated that the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics were found suitable to chloride ion removal. Additionally, the regeneration and reusability of the Ag NPs-modified bentonite were further studied. In the regeneration and reusability study, the Ag NPs-modified bentonite has shown consistently ≥90% and ≥87% chloride ion removal even up to 2 repeated cycles, separately. Thus, the findings in this study provided convincing evidence for using Ag-NPs modified bentonite as a high-efficiency and promising adsorbent to remove chloride ion from drinking water.

Adsorption of Aqueous Iodide on Hexadecyl Pyridinium-Modified Bentonite Investigated Using an Iodine–Starch Complex

The sorption affinity of iodide on organo-bentonite, modified with hexadecyl pyridinium (HDPy), was investigated with the iodine–starch method coupled with UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. The iodine–starch complex method was optimized in terms of the reaction time and sample compositions, based on the UV/Vis absorbance. The batch sorption experiment for iodide on organo-bentonites, modified using two different loading amounts of HDPy, was conducted to analyze the influence of equilibrium time, liquid-to-solid ratio, and temperature, on the iodide sorption affinity. The experimental results regarding the removal capacity were further employed to derive the distribution coefficients of iodide on the organo-bentonites. The novelty of this work lies in the first application of the iodine–starch method coupled with UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy for analyzing the sorption behavior of iodide on modified bentonites. It is expected that the iodide-starch method can be complementarily employed for future research, with respect to the quantification of iodide.
