The Role of Gender in Worry and Efforts to Cope during Stressful Waiting Periods

More prevalent and more severe: gender differences of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents

Background

Adolescent depression has become a leading problem around the world, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic has remained prevalent and heavily influenced people's mental health. While gender difference has always been a topic in the field of psychiatry, there are cultural differences across the world that must be taken into account. The current study is examining gender differences in symptoms of Chinese adolescents with depression.

Methods

The sample was obtained from a total of 574 adolescent patients (172 males and 402 females) diagnosed with depression following the DSM-IV/ICD-10 diagnostic criteria; patients who also had other severe mental or physical illnesses were excluded. The ages of participants ranged from 10 to 19 years. Additionally, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to examine differences in symptoms between different gender and age groups. The LPA was used to examine whether females and males were having different patterns of symptoms.

Results

Our analysis showed that compared to males, females exhibited higher rates of depression and more severe depressive symptoms across age groups. Likewise, the analysis also revealed an earlier onset of depression among Chinese adolescents compared to that in Western countries in previous studies. Finally, the LPA showed that mild to moderate depression was predominant in male patients, while severe depression was predominant in female patients.

Conclusion

This study highlights the gender differences in the prevalence and severity of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The current study highlighted the importance of gender equality and developing gender-friendly interventions in maintaining the overall mental health of adolescents in China.

Expectant Fathers' perceptions towards high-risk pregnancy and experiences in this period: A study of hermeneutic phenomenology

BACKROUND

High-risk pregnancy affects maternal and infant health negatively and it may be the beginning of a process with traumatic outcomes for women and their spouses. Identifying the experiences and perceptions of expectant fathers in this process is important to develop support factors for women and their spouses.

OBJECTIVE

To identify expectant fathers' perceptions towards high-risk pregnancy and their experiences during the high-risk pregnancy period.

PARTICIPANTS

Fifteen expectant fathers whose spouses were admitted to the hospital due to high-risk pregnancy were interviewed for the study.

DESIGN

This study was conducted using an interpretive paradigm based on the Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology, which is a qualitative research method. Data were collected through in-depth telephonic interviews. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically.

FINDINGS

Four main themes were obtained: "Emotional burden", "Coping mechanisms", "Adaptation to fatherhood" and "High-risk pregnancy journey". The expectant fathers said that they had so many emotions during this process, could cope by praying and with support from their spouses, longed for their unborn child and had increased responsibilities due to paternity.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study indicated that men struggled emotionally, had very few coping strategies, questioned the high-risk pregnancy process, had several expectations and formed father-infant attachment during the high-risk pregnancy. Further studies are needed that review how midwives and nurses can support expectant fathers in this process and that provide opportunities for the improvement of clinical roles in this regard.

Repetitive Negative Thinking Processes Account for Gender Differences in Depression and Anxiety During Adolescence

Rumination and worry are vulnerability factors involved in the early development of depression and anxiety during adolescence, particularly in girls. Current views conceptualize rumination and worry as transdiagnostic forms of repetitive negative thinking (RNT). However, most of research has analyzed them separately, without considering gender differences. We analyzed common and specific roles of rumination and worry in accounting for depressive and anxiety symptom levels overall and as a function of gender in adolescents (N = 159). Rumination and worry items were loaded into separate RNT factors. Girls showed a higher use of rumination and worry and higher levels of depression and anxiety than boys. Structural equation modeling supported that both RNT factors accounted for gender differences in symptom levels: rumination was the strongest mediator for depression and worry the strongest mediator for anxiety. Our findings support both general and specific contributions of RNT to account for affective symptomatology during adolescence, particularly in girls.

Can Senior Travelers Save Japanese Hot Springs? A Psychographic Segmentation of Visitors and Their Intention to Visit Onsen Establishments during COVID-19

To develop tourism products and campaigns that will not just help Japanese hot springs survive but revive and sustain them in the future, it is imperative to understand the behavioral intentions of its visitors during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This study aims to investigate how the important market of senior Japanese visitors is characterized by their attitudes and feelings toward visiting hot springs during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, it explores whether external travel incentives can increase seniors’ intention to visit. A market research study was conducted on Japanese nationals, using 507 questionnaires. A factor analysis generated five attitude dimensions: (1) response efficacy, (2) perceived COVID-19 infectability, (3) self-efficacy, (4) crowding perception and feeling, and (5) perceived threat severity. Through k-means cluster analysis, the segmentation produced three distinct tourist segments: trusting seniors, concerned seniors, and indifferent seniors. Each segment is clearly described in terms of attitudes, considering distinct sociodemographic characteristics. Practical suggestions on managing and targeting these segments are also discussed.

Worry during the initial height of the COVID-19 crisis in an Italian sample

In the earliest months of 2020, the COVID-19 emergency reached a pandemic status of international concern. In this situation, people tended to think more about current difficulties and their negative consequences due to the fear of infection and changed daily life during quarantine. The aim of this study was to explore the severity of worry in relation to individual characteristics and emotions during COVID-19 outbreak in the Italian people. Socio-demographic questions and standardized self-report questionnaires were administered online. Results highlighted a moderate level of worry, anxiety and distress. People with higher perceptions of COVID-19 severity exhibited higher levels of worry in contrast to those who perceived a greater control over the possibility of infection. Multiple regression analysis indicated that coping styles, emotion regulation strategies and personality traits significantly contributed to explain the variance in worry scores. Findings supported that cognitive reappraisal, emotion-focused coping and extraversion were protective factors for worry, while expressive suppression, dysfunctional and problem-focused coping, and neuroticism were related to high worry. However, neuroticism and dysfunctional coping were particularly important predictors of worry. This paper also considers possible psychological interventions that might be implemented in order to deal with mental health issues emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic.
