Abstract
Chronically short (<7 h) and long (>9 h) sleep duration may increase cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk relative to the recommended sleep duration (7-9 h). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of short and long sleep duration on arterial stiffness, a marker of CVD risk, in adults. Eleven cross-sectional studies were reviewed with a total sample size of 100,050 participants (64.5% male). Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated and pooled using random effects models, and standardized mean differences (SMD) were calculated to determine effect size magnitude. Compared to the recommended sleep duration, both short (WMD = 20.6 cm/s, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 13.8-27.4 cm/s, SMD = 0.02) and long sleep duration (WMD = 33.6 cm/s, 95% CI: 20.0-47.2 cm/s, SMD = 0.79) were associated with higher (detrimental) pulse wave velocity (PWV). The associations between short sleep and higher PWV in adults with cardiometabolic disease, and long sleep and higher PWV in older adults, were also significant in sub-group analysis. These findings indicate short and long sleep duration may contribute to subclinical CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Altered sleep parameters, such as duration and quality, play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases, as well as in all-cause morbidity and mortality. It has been suggested that the specific mechanisms underlying this association could be through the influence of sleep parameters on vascular markers, such as arterial stiffness (AS), although this remains unclear. Thus, in this meta-analysis, we aimed to assess the association between sleep duration and sleep quality with AS in adults. METHODS PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to July 30, 2021. The DerSimonian and Laird method was used to compute pooled effect size estimates and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of the association of sleep duration and sleep quality with AS. The Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies from the United States National Institute of Health National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Finally, 14 studies (8 cross-sectional studies and baseline data from 6 prospective longitudinal studies) involving 97,837 individuals between 18 and 92 years of age were included. Our results showed that increased sleep duration, as continuous values, does not influence AS (effect size [ES]: 0.00; 95% CIs: -0.15, 0.15) in the general population. However, when sleep duration was longer than 8 hours (ES: 0.21; 95% CIs: 0.06, 0.36), according to sleep categories, a significant increase in pulse wave velocity was shown. Poor sleep quality was associated with increased AS (ES: 0.13; 95% CIs: 0.04, 0.21) in the general population. The overall risk of bias for studies examining sleep duration was fair in 77.8% of the included studies and the overall risk of bias for studies examining sleep quality was fair in 55.6%. CONCLUSIONS Our findings showed that both long sleep duration and poor sleep quality were associated with AS in adults. These findings underscore the influence of sleep on vascular health markers, specifically AS, as a possible pathway to explain the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with sleep disorders.

Effects of sleep deprivation on endothelial function in adult humans: a systematic review. GeroScience 2021; 43:137-158. Abstract
Sleep deprivation is highly prevalent and is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Age-related alterations in sleep and chronobiology may exaggerate CVD susceptibility in older individuals. The mechanisms responsible for the association between sleep deprivation and CVD are not fully understood, but endothelial dysfunction may play a central role. Our objective was to conduct a systematic literature review to evaluate the evidence on the effects of sleep deprivation on endothelial function (EF). This review adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and was pre-registered with PROSPERO (#CRD42020192485, 07/24/2020). We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library for articles published through May 1, 2020. Eligibility criteria included publication in English and use of well-established EF methodologies in adult humans. Two investigators independently performed the literature search, study selection, data extraction, risk-of-bias assessment, and qualitative data synthesis. Out of 3571 articles identified, 24 articles were included in the systematic review. Main findings include the following: (1) shorter sleep duration is associated with lower macrovascular EF; (2) not sleeping 7-9 h/night is linked with impaired microvascular EF; (3) sleep restriction impairs micro- and macrovascular EF; (4) acute total sleep deprivation impairs micro- and macrovascular EF but data on macrovascular EF are less consistent; and (5) shift work impairs macrovascular EF. In conclusion, sleep deprivation impairs EF, which may explain the link between insufficient sleep and CVD. Future investigations should fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms and develop strategies to combat the adverse endothelial effects of sleep deprivation across the lifespan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing public health concern worldwide. With the progression of urbanization, light pollution is becoming an inevitable risk factor for NAFLD. However, the role of light pollution on NAFLD is insufficiently understood, and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The present study explored effects of constant light exposure on NAFLD and elucidated its related mechanisms. METHODS Thirty-two male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups (n = 8 each): (i) rats on a normal diet exposed to standard light-dark cycle (ND-LD); (ii) rats on a normal diet exposed to constant light (ND-LL); (iii) rats on a high-fat diet exposed to standard light-dark cycle (HFD-LD); and (iv) and rats on a high-fat diet exposed to constant light (HFD-LL). After 12 weeks of treatment, rats were sacrificed and pathophysiological assessments were performed. Targeted lipidomics was used to measure sphingolipids, including ceramides, glucosylceramides, and lactosylceramides, sphingomyelins, and sphingosine-1-phosphates in plasma and liver tissues. RESULTS In normal chow rats, constant light exposure led to glucose abnormalities and dyslipidemia. In high-fat-fed rats, constant light exposure exacerbated glucose abnormalities, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation and aggravated steatohepatitis. Compared with HFD-LD rats, HFD-LL had decreased plasma sphingosine-1-phosphate and elevated liver concentrations of total ceramide and specific ceramide species (ceramide d18:0/24:0, ceramide d18:1/22:0, ceramide d18:1/24:0, and ceramide d18:1/24:1), which were associated with increased hepatocyte apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS Constant light exposure causes dysregulation of sphingolipids and promotes steatohepatitis in high-fat-fed rats.

Abstract
The association between sleep conditions and arterial stiffness remains inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the relationship of sleep duration and quality with brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity (baPWV) in hypertensive patients. A total of 14,485 hypertensive adults were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Information about sleep duration and quality was obtained via questionnaire. A baPWV level ≥1800 cm/s was defined as indicative of arterial stiffness. Compared with participants with a sleep duration <8 h per day, participants with a sleep duration ≥8 h per day had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 13.7 cm/s; 95% CI: 3.9, 23.5) and a nonsignificantly higher prevalence of arterial stiffness (39.7% vs. 33.0%; OR, 1.08; 95% CI: 0.99-1.19). Similarly, compared with participants with good or medium sleep quality, participants with poor sleep quality had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 16.3 cm/s; 95% CI: 0.1, 32.6) and a nonsignificantly greater prevalence of arterial stiffness (36.6% vs. 35.3%; OR, 1.13; 95% CI: 0.97-1.32). When sleep duration and quality were examined jointly, participants with a sleep duration ≥8 h and/or poor sleep quality had a significantly higher baPWV level (β = 14.4 cm/s; 95% CI: 5.3, 23.4) and a greater prevalence of arterial stiffness (38.8% vs. 32.7%; OR, 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01-1.20) than those with a sleep duration <8 h and good/medium sleep quality. In summary, among hypertensive patients, a longer sleep duration (≥8 h per day) and poor sleep quality were associated with higher baPWV levels and a higher prevalence of arterial stiffness.

Abstract
Rosacea is a chronic facial skin disease involved in neurovascular dysregulation and neurogenic inflammation. Behavioral factors such as stress, anxiety, depression and sleep were identified to be associated with other inflammatory skin diseases. Few studies have reported sleep status in rosacea. Aiming to investigate the relationship between rosacea and sleep, a case-control survey was conducted, enrolling 608 rosacea patients and 608 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Sleep quality was assessed through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Diagnosis and severity grading of rosacea were evaluated under the standard guidelines of the National Rosacea Society. More rosacea patients (52.3%, n = 318) suffered poor sleep quality (PSQI, >5) than the healthy controls (24.0%, n = 146), displaying a much higher PSQI score (rosacea vs control, 6.20 vs 3.95). There was a strong association between sleep quality and rosacea (odds ratio [OR], 3.525; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.759-4.519). Moreover, the severity of rosacea was also associated with sleep quality (OR, 1.847; 95% CI, 1.332-2.570). Single nucleotide polymorphisms in hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A and adrenoceptor-β1 genes, which are associated with sleep behaviour, were detected and revealed to be associated with rosacea. Furthermore, the LL-37-induced rosacea-like phenotype and sleep-deprivation mice models were applied, revealing that sleep deprivation aggravated the rosacea-like phenotype in mice, with higher expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9, Toll-like receptor 2, cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide and vascular endothelial growth factor. In conclusion, rosacea patients presented poorer sleep quality, as well as a higher propability of genetic background with sleep disturbance. In addition, poor sleep might aggravate rosacea through regulating inflammatory factors, contributing to a vicious cycle in the progression of disease.

Abstract
The study aimed to examine the association between objective estimates of sleep duration and quality and aortic stiffness while accounting for the potential confounding effect of sleep-disordered breathing. Participants were part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Sleep study. Sleep duration and quality were assessed by 7-day wrist actigraphy, sleep-disordered breathing by home polysomnography, and aortic stiffness by magnetic resonance imaging-based aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), ascending and descending aorta distensibility. Aortic stiffness of participants with "normal" sleep duration (6-8 hours) were compared with those of "short" (<6 hours) and "long" sleep duration (>8 hours) adjusting for common cardiovascular risk factors and apnea-hypopnea index. The sample consisted of 908 participants (mean age 68.4 ± 9.1 years, 55.3% female). There was a significant linear trend of increased aPWV across short (n = 252), normal (n = 552), and long sleep durations (n = 104) (P for trend = .008). Multivariable analysis showed that people with short sleep duration had 0.94 m/s lower aPWV (95% CI: -1.54, -0.35), compared with those with normal sleep duration. In this ethnically diverse community cohort, habitual short sleep duration as estimated by actigraphy was associated with lower aortic stiffness.

Abstract
As women age and go through menopause, they suffer a higher incidence of sleep disorder, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In addition, evidences suggested that sleep disorder was an important pathological indicator for coronary heart disease. However, the relationship between different menopausal status, sleep disorder and cardiovascular diseases was unclear. Thus, we aim to assess the association between sleep disorder with arterial stiffness in females of 40–60 years free of cardiovascular diseases through self-administered Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Logistic regression revealed that sleep disorder (PSQI score ≥ 8) was an independent indicator for higher risk of elevated arterial stiffness (baPWV ≥ 1465.5 cm/s, upper tertile) beyond other established cardiovascular confounders in peri-postmenopause (OR 2.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.00–4.00, p < 0.001), but not in premenopause (OR 1.67, 95% CI 0.71–3.90, p = 0.223). Collectively, it clearly indicates that sleep disorder in menopausal women is of prominent value to predict arterial stiffness.
